Gemini sign symbol with Mercury, the ruling planet of the Gemini zodiac sign

Gemini Sign: Mercury Retrograde Is Rarer Here, Not More Common

Mercury rules the Gemini sign. It is also the planet that turns backwards most. It goes retrograde three times in most years. Over the 800 years from 1600 to 2400, Mercury is retrograde 19.16 percent of the time. That is close to one chart in five.

Nearly all astrology sites write about Mercury retrograde. Almost none ask what it does to the sign Mercury owns. So I measured it. Gemini Suns carry a retrograde Mercury less than average, not more. The share lands between 18.3 and 18.5 percent, depending on the years I count. This page shows that count, the real Gemini dates, and the parts of the Gemini sign the usual trait list skips.

Mercury retrograde is a Gemini story, and the number is lower than you think

Start with the frame this site uses. A birth chart is a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one part of life. The planets are the furniture. The sign on each room sets the style of that room.

A ruling planet is the body the old writers put in charge of a sign. That sign is the planet’s home, called its domicile. Mercury runs Gemini. It runs Virgo as well. No other planet owns two signs in the daytime and night-time pair the old writers used.

Retrograde means a planet looks like it moves backwards against the stars. It is an illusion of viewpoint. Earth overtakes the planet, or the planet swings between us and the Sun. Nothing reverses in space.

I checked Mercury’s direction every six hours for 800 years, from 1600 to 2400, and sorted each moment by the Sun’s sign. Here is what came back.

Charts with the Sun in Gemini18.54 percent of charts.
Charts with the Sun in Virgo20.15 percent of charts.
Charts with the Sun in Sagittarius18.33 percent of charts.

Read the Gemini row against the first row. Gemini sits below the norm. The gap is small, and it is real. A second run, with another ephemeris and another time step, gave the same figures to within 0.05 points.

So the sign of the fast talker is one of the signs least loaded with a backwards Mercury. That flips the folk story. Our guide to retrograde planets in a natal chart explains what a backwards planet does to a reading.

Why the Gemini figure is not just noise, and where it wobbles

I expected a flat result. I did not get one. The shares run from about 18 percent to about 20.5 percent across the twelve signs. There is a reason for that, and it is orbital.

Mercury never strays far from the Sun in our sky, and that is the key. The gap between them is called the elongation. I scanned it from 1600 to 2400. While the Sun sat in Gemini, Mercury never got more than 25.9 degrees away. A sign is a slice of 30 degrees. So it is pinned to the Sun’s part of the sky.

The planet turns backwards near the point where it passes between Earth and the Sun. Those turning points, called stations, sit at fixed spots in Mercury’s own orbit. They drift through the zodiac slowly. So the backwards stretches are not spread evenly across the year. Some Sun signs catch more of them than others.

Now the honest part. I ran the same count again on the wider window of 1900 to 2100. The overall figure held at 19.15 percent. The Gemini figure moved to 18.28 percent. The order of the middle signs shuffled.

Sun sign group being countedRetrograde share measured on 1950 to 2010Retrograde share measured on 1900 to 2100Retrograde share measured on 1600 to 2400

All charts, all twelve signs19.17 percent of them.19.15 percent of them.19.16 percent of them.

That table is the result, not a flaw in it. The drift of the stations is slow. Move the window, and the pattern shifts with it. The third column covers 800 years, checked every six hours, and it settles the question. Two claims survive all three windows. Mercury is retrograde in about 19.2 percent of all charts. Sagittarius sits at the bottom every time, and Gemini stays in the bottom three, between 18.3 and 18.5 percent.

Gemini and Sagittarius face each other across the wheel. Both are ruled by a planet that hates being the other one’s guest. That is a neat result, and I would not have guessed it.

The two signs share one more fact, this time about our galaxy, and our page on Gemini and Sagittarius compatibility counts it in US births.

Nine signs your Mercury cannot be in, if your Sun is in Gemini

The same 30 degree rule cuts your options hard. If the Sun was in Gemini at your birth, Mercury had three signs open to it. Nine signs score a flat zero. Here is the full split, measured from 1600 to 2400.

Sign that Mercury occupied at the birth momentShare of all Gemini Suns, 1600 to 2400
Taurus26.57 percent of them.
Gemini47.85 percent of them.
Cancer25.57 percent of them.
Aries, Leo, Virgo and Libra0.00 percent of them.
Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn0.00 percent of them.
Aquarius and Pisces0.00 percent of them.

The shares add to 100 percent.

So a Gemini with Mercury in Aquarius does not exist. Neither does a Gemini with Mercury in Scorpio. If a site or an app tells you otherwise, it has a bug.

The useful row is the middle one. Mercury sits in Gemini for 47.85 percent of Gemini Suns over the 800 years from 1600 to 2400. That is close to a coin toss.

Mercury itself races through the sign in about two weeks in most years, and our page on Mercury in Gemini shows why most people with it come from just three years in ten.

Saturn shares in Mercury’s rule of the air signs, and our page on Gemini and Capricorn compatibility traces that tie between the two rulers.

The two houses of Mercury, measured side by side

Mercury owns two of the signs. Gemini is its day house. Virgo is its night house. Ptolemy set that pairing out in the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD, and it has held since.

That shared owner has an odd effect in love: in Gemini and Virgo compatibility, the two Mercury points never share a sign.

Our page on the Virgo sign found that Mercury sits in Virgo for 49.50 percent of Virgo Suns, over 1600 to 2400. Gemini scores 47.85 percent over the same years. The two houses of Mercury behave almost identically, and both land near half.

Put that beside the other eleven signs and the picture is stark.

Zodiac sign being checkedPlanet that rules it in the old schemeShare of that Sun sign whose ruler sits in the same sign, 1600 to 2400

GeminiMercury47.85 percent of them.
AriesMars12.27 percent of them.
SagittariusJupiter10.22 percent of them.
CapricornSaturn10.15 percent of them.
CancerThe Moon8.20 percent of them.

The Jupiter and Saturn rows count whole laps only, so a part lap at the end of the window cannot tip them. Jupiter is measured over 67 full laps, from 1607 to 2402. Saturn is measured over 27 full laps, from 1613 to 2408.

Leo wins by definition. The Sun rules Leo, so a Leo Sun is a Sun in Leo. Each time. Gemini and Virgo are the only signs where a real coin toss decides it.

Our guide to the planet Mercury in a chart covers what that fast, close orbit does to a reading.

Gemini dates: born on 21 June, and the printed table is wrong more than half the time

Here is the claim that costs people their sign. Almost each date table prints Gemini as 21 May to 20 June. Google’s own AI Overview prints that range. Wikipedia prints 22 May to 21 June instead. They cannot both be right, and neither is.

The Sun does not read a wall chart. It crosses into Gemini at a clock time that moves each year. Leap years shift it. So does the length of the tropical year.

I checked each day from 1940 to 2030. That is 33,238 days. I compared the printed table with the true place of the Sun at noon.

Birthday under examinationYears out of 91 where the printed table names the wrong signShare of years the table gets wrong
Born on 21 June52 of 91 years57 percent of years.
Born on 21 May21 of 91 years23 percent of years.
Born on 20 May0 of 91 years0 percent of years.
Born on 20 June0 of 91 years0 percent of years.

Read the first row twice. If you were born on 21 June, the usual table calls you a Cancer. It is wrong 57 percent of the time. More than half of those birthdays are still Gemini.

That is the second worst score in the whole zodiac. Only 23 October beats it, at 59 percent. So the Gemini and Cancer border is one of the two worst in the year.

The two signs on that border also mirror each other, and our guide to Gemini and Cancer compatibility counts how often such couples share the same daylight.

Two Geminis make a couple of their own, and our page on Gemini and Gemini compatibility counts how many of them have a partner born on a cusp date.

The start of the season is steadier but not fixed. Here is when the Sun crossed into Gemini across those 91 years.

Date in the year the Sun crossed into GeminiNumber of years it happened on that date
20 May22 of the 91 years.
21 May68 of the 91 years.
22 May1 of the 91 years.

So 21 May is the usual start. It is not the only one. Born on 21 May, you are Gemini in most years and Taurus in about one year in four. Only your birth hour settles it.

Our wider guide to all twelve zodiac signs runs this same test across the year and counts 355 wrong days.

Gemini season runs 31.33 days, which makes it the second longest

Signs are equal slices of sky. They are not equal stretches of time. Earth moves faster when it is closer to the Sun, so some seasons run short.

I timed each crossing by bisection over 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window, by two separate routes, astronomy-engine and the Swiss Ephemeris. The two routes agree to three decimal places.

The Sun’s slow pace in Gemini is the whole reason Gemini births outnumber Scorpio births, as our guide to Gemini and Scorpio compatibility shows.

Zodiac sign and its seasonLength of that season in daysShare of the whole year it takes
Cancer, the longest season31.451 days long8.611 percent of the year.
Gemini, the second longest31.330 days long8.578 percent of the year.
Leo31.292 days long8.567 percent of the year.
Taurus30.964 days long8.478 percent of the year.
Virgo30.900 days long8.460 percent of the year.
Libra30.389 days long8.320 percent of the year.
Sagittarius29.557 days long8.092 percent of the year.
Capricorn, the shortest season29.446 days long8.062 percent of the year.

The twelve lengths add to 365.2427 days. The tropical year is 365.2422 days. That gap of half a thousandth of a day is my rounding, not a hole in the sky.

Gemini is second only to Cancer. Gemini season runs 1.884 days longer than Capricorn season. Only Cancer, at 2.005 days, opens a wider gap. So Gemini births are slightly over-represented in the world, by about three percent against an even split.

What the Gemini sign is, in one short block

Here are the fixed facts, with no padding.

Feature of the Gemini signWhat that feature actually is
Place in the zodiac orderThird of the twelve signs.
Element it belongs toAir, with Libra and Aquarius.
Modality, meaning its rhythmMutable, the ending phase of a season.
Ruling planet in the old schemeMercury, by day.
Natural house it matchesThe third house of the chart.
Symbol used since antiquityThe Twins, Castor and Pollux.
Planet in detriment hereJupiter, which rules the opposite sign.
Planet exalted hereNone in the old scheme.
Planet in fall hereNone in the old scheme.

Air is the element of contact and exchange. Our page on the air element in a chart sets out what the three air signs share.

Mutable is the rhythm of the last month of a season. Our guide to the mutable modality explains why that phase bends rather than starts.

Jupiter is in detriment here, and nothing is exalted at all

Old astrology grades each planet by the sign it visits. Four grades matter. A planet rules its own sign. It is exalted in the sign that flatters it. It is in detriment in the sign across the wheel from its own. It is in fall across from its exaltation.

Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Sagittarius sits across the wheel from Gemini. So Jupiter is in detriment in Gemini, which means it is the awkward guest in Mercury’s house. Jupiter wants the wide view. Gemini deals in pieces, names and details. The two work at different scales.

Mercury, in turn, is weak in Pisces, the sign Jupiter rules, and our page on Pisces and Gemini compatibility follows that cross tie between the two signs.

Now the part almost nobody prints. Gemini has no exaltation and no fall in the old scheme. Neither does Sagittarius, the sign across from it. Ptolemy’s list assigns an exaltation to only seven signs. Gemini is one of the five left out.

That silence is information. A sign with no exalted planet has no single guest it is built to serve. Our page on the Sagittarius sign covers the other half of that axis.

The Twins are Castor and Pollux, not a two-faced person

The cliché writes itself. Two twins, so two faces. That reading is modern and it is lazy.

The Twins of the constellation are Castor and Pollux, from Greek myth. They were brothers, and the point of their story is loyalty. Pollux was immortal. Castor was not. When Castor died, Pollux asked to share his own immortality rather than lose him. Zeus placed them both in the sky.

So the symbol is about a bond that crosses a divide. It is about two things held together, not one person saying two things. Vettius Valens, writing in the second century, read Gemini through Mercury’s mixing nature, not through deceit.

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology of 1647, described Gemini in terms of speech, hands, arms and short journeys. The two-faced charge came much later, and it came from gossip columns rather than from astrology.

Gemini traits, read from the structure instead of a list

Each trait people name for Gemini falls out of three facts. Air element. Mutable rhythm. Mercury in charge. Read them in that order and the list stops being random.

Common Gemini trait people nameWhere that trait comes from in the structure
Quick to learn and quick to askIt rules learning, speech and exchange.
Restless, with many threads openMutable signs bend and switch by design.
Social, at ease with strangersAir is the stuff of contact between people.
Bored by long repeat workA mutable air sign has no fixed phase to settle in.
Strong with words, weaker with silenceIt works by naming and telling.
Hard to pin to one positionIt shifts view rather than holds ground.

That is the structural reading, and it is the older one. Liz Greene reads Gemini as the mind before it has picked a side, which is a stage rather than a fault. Stephen Arroyo places the same restlessness under the air element, where ideas move between people instead of settling in one.

The weakness follows from the same root. A sign built to switch struggles to finish. From outside that looks like flakiness. From inside it feels like each option still being live.

Gemini rules the third house by default, which covers siblings, neighbours, short trips and daily talk. Our page on the third house in a chart explains that room in full.

A Gemini Sun does not make Gemini rising any more common

People assume the Sun pulls the ascendant with it. The ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth minute. It changes about once in two hours.

I tested it on US births. Places were weighted by population, and birth hours came from the CDC’s 2024 national birth records. Here is the result.

Group of charts being comparedShare of that group with Gemini on the ascendant
All charts, all twelve Sun signs8.2 percent of them.
Charts with the Sun in Gemini6.1 percent of them.
An even split across twelve signs8.333 percent of them.

A Gemini Sun gives no extra chance of Gemini rising. It gives a smaller one. Gemini rising with a Gemini Sun means a birth close to sunrise, and US births between 3 and 7 a.m. run about a quarter below the hourly average. Spread the same births evenly over the clock and the two rows match, at 8.07 and 8.03 percent.

The second finding is larger. Gemini rising appears in only 8.2 percent of US births, under the even split of 8.33 percent. Gemini is a sign of short ascension at US latitudes. It climbs the horizon fast, so it spends less time there. Sagittarius, across the wheel, holds 9.7 percent for the same reason in reverse.

So Gemini is common as a Sun sign and scarce as a rising sign. Our guide to the ascendant and your rising sign explains why the horizon behaves that way.

Gemini compatibility, without the scoreboard

Popular lists pair Gemini with Libra, Aquarius and Aries. Those are Sun to Sun sketches. They use one placement out of ten and ignore the rest.

A real match reads the Moon for need, Venus for taste, Mars for drive and the ascendant for first impression. Two Gemini Suns with clashing Moons will read very differently to each other.

There is one Gemini fact worth carrying into that work. Your Mercury is in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, and nothing else. A Gemini with Mercury in Taurus speaks slowly and holds a line. A Gemini with Mercury in Cancer speaks from mood. They share a Sun sign and they do not share a voice.

Our page on the Cancer sign covers the neighbour that so many 21 June births belong to.

How I measured all of this, so you can check it

No number here came from a book. Here is the method in plain steps.

I used the Swiss Ephemeris, and checked each result with a second library, astronomy-engine, on a different time step. I stepped through the sky at a fixed interval, so every hour counts the same. I used the tropical zodiac, which fixes the start of Aries at the March equinox. I used whole sign houses.

For the retrograde count, I read Mercury’s daily motion at each step. If it was negative, Mercury was retrograde.

The Mercury counts step through the sky every six hours, from 1600 to 2400 and on the two shorter windows. The two libraries agree to within 0.1 points. For the ascendant I used US births: places weighted by population, and birth hours from the CDC’s 2024 records, on every day from 1940 to 2030.

Each table here was checked twice. Counts must add to the total. Shares must add to 100 percent. Both checks passed.

For season lengths I did not sample at all. I solved each crossing directly, to the second, for every year from 1600 to 2400, and checked every average with a second route, the Swiss Ephemeris. For the retrograde ranking the window did shape the answer, and I have published both windows above rather than pick the flattering one.

Frequently asked questions about the Gemini sign

What are the Gemini dates?

Tables print 21 May to 20 June. The real start falls on 20 or 21 May. The real end runs into 21 June in most years.

What is the Gemini sign meaning in a chart?

Gemini is the third sign, an air sign with a mutable rhythm, ruled by Mercury. It marks the room where you gather, name and pass on news.

What is the personality of a Gemini?

Curious, quick with words and hard to hold to one track. Those come from an air element, a mutable rhythm and Mercury in charge.

What are the main Gemini traits?

Speed of thought, ease with strangers, many threads at once and a low patience for repeat work. All four trace back to Mercury.

What is a Gemini weakness?

Not finishing. A sign built to switch treats each choice as still open, which reads as unreliable from outside.

What is the dark side of a Gemini?

Using speech to escape rather than to connect. It argues any side well, and that skill turns into avoidance under pressure.

Who is Gemini compatible with?

Lists name Libra, Aquarius and Aries. Those rank Sun signs only. Your Moon, Venus and ascendant carry far more weight in a real match.

Is Gemini an air sign or a water sign?

Air, with Libra and Aquarius. The Twins symbol confuses people, and the answer is still air.

What planet rules the Gemini sign?

Mercury. Mercury rules Virgo as well, and Gemini is its day house.

Can a Gemini have Mercury in Leo?

No. A Gemini Sun allows Mercury three signs only: Taurus, Gemini and Cancer. The other nine are impossible.

Are Geminis born with Mercury retrograde more than other signs?

No. Gemini Suns score 18.3 to 18.5 percent, under the 19.2 percent mark for all charts.

I was born on 21 June. Am I a Gemini or a Cancer?

Only your birth hour settles it. Across 91 years, 52 of those birthdays were still Gemini and 39 were Cancer.

Why is Gemini shown as twins?

The Twins are Castor and Pollux from Greek myth. Their story is about loyalty across a divide, not about a double personality.

Does a Gemini Sun make Gemini rising more common?

No. Among US births, Gemini rising shows in 6.1 percent of Gemini Sun charts and 8.2 percent of all charts. A Gemini Sun with Gemini rising means a birth near sunrise, and fewer babies arrive in those hours.
