Mercury is on a short leash. It never strays far from the Sun. We tracked both bodies across the 800 years from 1600 to 2400, and the widest gap between the two was 27.79 degrees. That is less than one zodiac sign. Every claim made about this planet starts from that one fact.
This guide covers what the planet stands for, how fast it moves, the signs it governs, and what the retrograde panic is really about. The figures here come from our own count. The method is set out near the end, so you can check it.
What does Mercury represent in astrology?
It stands for the working mind. Astrologers read it for how you take in facts, sort them, and hand them back out. That covers speech, writing, listening, learning, bargaining and the small daily errands of life.
The Roman god Mercury carried messages between the gods and the living. He was quick, clever and not always honest. Astrology kept that whole picture. The planet is not read as wisdom. It is read as speed and skill.
Vettius Valens, a Greek-speaking writer of the second century, listed this planet with trade, letters, numbers and youth. Fifteen centuries later the English astrologer William Lilly, in his 1647 book Christian Astrology, gave the same planet to merchants, clerks, messengers and thieves. The list has barely moved in two thousand years.
Modern authors shifted the stress. Liz Greene reads the planet as the part of the mind that builds a bridge between what you feel and what you can say. Robert Hand treats it as the function that gives shape to raw sense data. Demetra George goes back to the older Greek material and reads it as the guide who moves between worlds.
Here is the short version of what the older writers hand this planet.
| Area | What the planet covers |
|---|---|
| Mind | Reason, memory, curiosity, the way you learn. |
| Speech | Talking, writing, teaching, argument, humour. |
| Exchange | Trade, contracts, money as a language, the deal. |
| Movement | Short trips, errands, neighbours, brothers and sisters. |
| Craft | Hands, tools, code, repair, anything with a technique. |
Mercury planet astrology: size, speed and a 27.79-degree leash
Astrology reads a sky it can see. So the habits of the real planet shape the symbol.
Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system and the closest one to the Sun. It goes round the Sun in 88 days. From Earth it looks like a fast dot that keeps darting out on one side of the Sun, stopping, and darting back.
That darting has a hard limit. The angle between a planet and the Sun, as seen from Earth, is called its elongation. Across 1600 to 2400 the elongation never passed 27.79 degrees. The mean was 14.65 degrees. Venus, by contrast, reaches 47.28 degrees. This planet is held closer than any other body in the chart.
One result matters for chart reading. A zodiac sign is 30 degrees wide. So Mercury can only ever sit in your Sun sign, the sign just before it, or the sign just after. No other case exists.
For one worked case, see how the Sun signs split under Mercury in Capricorn.
A second result follows. Mercury and the Sun can form no aspect but a conjunction. An aspect is an angle between two planets. The smallest of the classic ones, the sextile, needs 60 degrees, and this planet cannot reach it.
That meeting is counted on the Sun conjunct Mercury page, and Mercury conjunct Venus covers the other pair that never squares off.
Speed on the ground varies a lot. Across 1600 to 2400, one stay in a sign lasted 24.6 days on average. The shortest stay was under half a day, a brief dip back over a sign line during a backwards loop. The quickest full crossing, from one edge of a sign to the other, took 13.8 days. The longest took 69 days, when the planet went backwards and had to cover the same ground three times.
How much those loops matter shows in Mercury in Libra: the loop years hold about two in three of the people born with it.
Your Mercury sign is rarely a surprise
This is the question people arrive with. You know your Sun sign. What are the odds that Mercury sits there too?
We measured it over the 800 years from 1600 to 2400.
| Where the planet sits | Share of charts |
|---|---|
| Same sign as the Sun | 51.17 % |
| The sign just after the Sun | 24.45 % |
| The sign just before the Sun | 24.37 % |
| Two signs away or more | 0 % |
Just over half of all people have this planet in their Sun sign. The rest split almost exactly down the middle between the two neighbour signs. Nothing else happens.
Venus behaves differently, and the contrast teaches a lot. Venus lands in the Sun sign in 23.6 percent of charts. It lands in the sign before in 29.2 percent, the sign after in 29.2 percent, and two signs away in 18 percent. Venus wanders. Mercury does not.
So a Sun in Taurus with Mercury in Aries is a real and common chart. A Sun in Taurus with Mercury in Capricorn is not a chart. It is an error in the data.
For one sign worked out in full, with dates and the length of each visit, see Mercury in Aquarius.
The planet also turns up in crowds. Take every moment from 1600 to 2400 when three or more of the seven classic bodies share one sign. Mercury is one of the group 76.2 percent of the time. Its closeness to the Sun makes it a natural member of any pile-up there.
The signs it governs, and the ones where it struggles
Old astrology gives each planet a home sign, a sign of honour, and two signs where it works badly. The Greek word for the whole system is dignity.
Mercury governs two signs. Astrologers call a home sign its domicile, meaning the sign it owns and runs on its own terms: Gemini and Virgo. In Gemini it gathers and scatters. In Virgo it sorts and refines. Both are jobs for the same tool, aimed opposite ways.
If Gemini or Virgo is your rising sign, Mercury is also your chart ruler, the planet that runs the whole chart, and it rules close to 1 US birth chart in 5.
Its exaltation is the sign where a planet is treated as an honoured guest, with more weight than it strictly owns. For this planet that is Virgo again. It is the only classical planet both at home and honoured in one sign. Some later authors moved the honour to Aquarius. Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, keeps it in Virgo.
Its detriment is the sign facing its home, where it works without its own tools: Sagittarius and Pisces. Its fall, the sign facing its exaltation, is Pisces as well. The old writers read this planet in Pisces as a mind that thinks in pictures rather than lists. That is a working style, not a flaw.
| Term | Sign | What the word means |
|---|---|---|
| Domicile | Gemini, Virgo | At home, and setting the rules. |
| Exaltation | Virgo | Honoured guest, given extra weight. |
| Detriment | Sagittarius, Pisces | Facing its home, short of its own tools. |
| Fall | Pisces | Facing its place of honour, least backed. |
To watch the two home signs at work, read them side by side. Mercury in Gemini and Mercury in Virgo use the same kit for very different ends.
Retrograde, counted rather than feared
Retrograde is the one word here that escaped into daily speech. Its meaning is plain. From Earth, a planet sometimes appears to slow, stop, and move backwards against the stars for a few weeks. Nothing about the planet changes. We are on a faster inner track and we overtake it, the way a train seems to slide back when yours pulls away.
The moment it appears to stop is called a station. There are two in each cycle. One at the start, when the planet turns back. One at the end, when it turns forward again.
Here is what we measured over the years 1600 to 2400.
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Retrograde spells per year | 3.15 |
| Mean length of one spell | 22.2 days |
| Shortest and longest logged | 19.8 and 24.2 days |
| Share of all time spent backwards, 1600 to 2400 | 19.16 % |
| Share of people born with it backwards, 1600 to 2400 | 19.16 % |
Read the last line again. Close to one person in five was born with Mercury retrograde. For Mars the figure is 9.46 percent. A chart feature shared by a fifth of humanity is not a curse. It is a common setting.
The coming windows are fixed and public. The planet turns back on 24 October 2026 at 20 degrees 59 minutes of Scorpio, and turns forward on 13 November 2026 at 5 degrees 2 minutes. Three more follow: 9 February to 3 March 2027, 10 June to 4 July 2027, and 7 October to 28 October 2027. These dates are the same in UTC and in New York time.
What the old writers say about these windows is modest. Greek and medieval astrologers read a backwards planet as one working indirectly, going over old ground, better suited to revision than to launch. That is a reading habit with a long history. It is not a forecast, and no measured effect on contracts, travel or devices has ever been shown. The word carries far more weight in the culture than the tradition ever gave it.
Reading the planet in your own chart
Three things locate it for you: its sign, its house, and whether it sits ahead of the Sun or behind it.
The sign describes the style of thought. The house describes where that thinking gets spent. Picture the chart as a house with twelve rooms, each room covering an area of life, with the planets as furniture. Mercury in the room of work is a mind pointed at work.
Two rooms belong to it by tradition. The third house covers brothers and sisters, short trips, and daily exchange. The sixth house covers work, routine and health. Our guide to the third house sets out what that room asks of you.
The last piece is place relative to the Sun. When the planet rises before the Sun, older writers called it the morning star and read it as quicker to speak. When it follows the Sun, they called it the evening star and read it as slower and more weighed. Chris Brennan has argued that this split carried more force in Greek practice than the sign did.
In early summer the evening side wins, as the count for Mercury in Cancer shows.
How these numbers were made
A figure you cannot check is worth nothing, so here is the method.
We stepped through every two hours from 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400, in Universal Time. At each step we computed the longitude of the Sun, Mercury and Venus with the astronomy-engine library, in the tropical zodiac, and logged the sign of each. No random draw is involved, so anyone can repeat it exactly.
The counts and lengths of the backwards spells came from a second pass over the same 800 years. It times every change of direction and every change of sign by halving the gap again and again. The 27.79-degree figure is the widest Sun-Mercury gap the two-hour sweep found.
The share of time spent backwards adds up those timed spells, from each station, the moment the planet stops and turns, to the next. Daily positions from NASA’s JPL Horizons service give the same 19.16 percent. A second, separate model of the planets, the Swiss Ephemeris, run in three-hour steps, gives the same figures throughout.
These are figures about the sky, not about people. They tell you how common a placement is. They say nothing about what anyone born with it will do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Mercury sit far from my Sun sign?
No. It sits in your Sun sign, the one before, or the one after. Our sweep of 1600 to 2400 found no other case. The 27.79-degree ceiling on the gap to the Sun explains why.
How many people are born with Mercury retrograde?
19.16 percent over the 800 years from 1600 to 2400. That is roughly one person in five. Venus and Mars run backwards less often, but the slow planets from Jupiter outward do so more.
How long does Mercury retrograde last?
22.2 days on average across 1600 to 2400, in a range from 19.8 to 24.2 days. It happens 3.15 times a year. Over 1600 to 2400, the planet runs backwards 19.16 percent of the time.
Which signs does Mercury rule?
Gemini and Virgo. It is honoured in Virgo too, which makes it the only classical planet at home and honoured in one and the same sign.
We measured both houses of Mercury: the Gemini sign holds Mercury in Gemini for 47.85 percent of Gemini Suns, against 49.50 percent for Virgo, over 1600 to 2400.
What is the difference between Mercury and the Sun in a chart?
The Sun is read as who you are. The other is read as how you handle and pass on what reaches you. They sit within 27.79 degrees of each other and can form no aspect but a conjunction.
Does Mercury retrograde cause trouble with travel and devices?
No measured effect has ever been shown. The old writers read a backwards planet as suited to review rather than to starting fresh. That is a reading habit with a long history, and nothing more.
