Every book says the same thing about Mercury in Virgo. It is the best sign Mercury can hold. I wanted to know who actually gets it. So I ran the sky over eight hundred years, from 1600 to 2400, and counted.
The first surprise is the Sun. Only 49.6 percent of the people with Mercury in Virgo are Virgo Suns. Another 36.6 percent are Leo Suns. The last 13.8 percent are Libra Suns. So more than a third of the people reading this page are Leos.
The second surprise is time. The strongest sign is not where Mercury spends the most time. Mercury passes 8.45 percent of all time in Virgo. It spends more time in Sagittarius, a sign where the old books call it weak. This page gives those numbers, the dates up to 2030, and the method, so you can check my work.
One sign, two titles
Mercury is the planet of thought, speech and learning in a chart. Our page on Mercury in astrology covers its full role. Here, one old rule matters most. Each planet has signs where it is strong and signs where it is weak.
The old authors called these ranks dignities. A dignity is a rank of strength that a sign gives a planet. The top rank is the house, or home, a sign the planet rules. The second is the exaltation, a sign where the planet is honoured like a guest of state.
Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, gives Mercury two homes, Gemini and Virgo. In book 1, chapter 19, he adds that Mercury is exalted in Virgo. His reason is weather. Mercury is a dry planet, and Virgo falls in the dry season of early autumn.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, writes it out in one line. Mercury “hath Gemini and Virgo for his Houses, and is exalted in the 15 of Virgo.” He then gives the weak side. Mercury is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, and in fall in Pisces. Detriment is the sign facing a home. Fall is the sign facing the exaltation.
No other planet has this. The Sun, the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each have their home and their exaltation in different signs. Only Mercury holds both titles in one sign.
The mirror image is Mercury in Pisces, where the same planet holds both of its weak grades.
Lilly’s score for this Mercury
Lilly gave each dignity a number of points. A home is worth five. An exaltation is worth four. Two smaller ranks follow. A term is a short slice of a sign, from two to eight degrees wide, with its own ruler. A face is a ten degree slice with its own ruler. A term is worth two points, and a face is worth one.
Mercury in Virgo scores nine points at any degree, from home and exaltation alone. It rules the first term of Virgo, from 0 to 7 degrees, which lifts it to eleven. It rules the last face, from 20 to 30 degrees, which lifts it to ten. Only the fourth rank, triplicity, goes to other planets. Triplicity is the rule of the three signs of one element, here earth.
| Where Mercury sits in Virgo | Lilly’s points and share of its time there. |
| From 0 to 7 degrees | Eleven points, 22.9 percent of its Virgo time. |
| From 7 to 20 degrees | Nine points, 43.2 percent of its Virgo time. |
| From 20 to 30 degrees | Ten points, 33.9 percent of its Virgo time. |
No other sign gives Mercury this much. That is the reason the books praise it. But the score says nothing about how many people have it. That is a separate count.
Who is born with Mercury in Virgo
Seen from Earth, Mercury never strays far from the Sun. Astronomers call the angle between them the elongation. While Mercury was in Virgo, the widest gap I found was 27.4 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So the Sun can only be in Leo, Virgo or Libra.
Here is the exact band. With Mercury in Virgo, the Sun was never further back than 2 degrees 48 minutes of Leo. It was never further on than 18 degrees 4 minutes of Libra. In date terms, for births from 1900 to 2100, Mercury in Virgo only occurs between 25 July and 12 October, in UTC. On the US East Coast, the earliest case starts on the evening of 24 July.
Inside that band, the split is far from even. The table gives the share of all the time Mercury spends in Virgo that falls under each Sun sign. Time is the right measure here, since births are spread across the year.
| Sun sign at birth | Share of people with Mercury in Virgo. |
| Sun in Virgo | 49.6 percent of them. |
| Sun in Leo | 36.6 percent of them. |
| Sun in Libra | 13.8 percent of them. |
| Any other Sun sign | Zero percent, it cannot happen. |
Why so many Leos? In late summer, Mercury runs ahead of the Sun more than it trails it. So it reaches Virgo while the Sun is still in Leo. The same tilt means few Libras get it. By the time the Sun reaches Libra, Mercury has most of the time moved on.
The same count, seen from your Sun sign
Turn the question around. If you know your Sun sign, what are the odds your Mercury is in Virgo? I measured the share of time Mercury spends in each sign while the Sun sits in the sign named.
| Your Sun sign | Where your Mercury can be. |
| Sun in Leo | Cancer 16.2 percent, Leo 47.7 percent, Virgo 36.1 percent. |
| Sun in Virgo | Leo 14.1 percent, Virgo 49.5 percent, Libra 36.4 percent. |
| Sun in Libra | Virgo 14.0 percent, Libra 53.1 percent, Scorpio 32.8 percent. |
So a Virgo has Mercury at home about half the time. That matches the 49.50 percent on our Virgo sign page, which uses the same 800 years. A Leo has more than one chance in three. A Libra has about one in seven.
For a Virgo Sun, Mercury can fall back into Leo, but not far. Over the whole window, it never went below 11 degrees 21 minutes of Leo. That is the limit behind the Gemini and Virgo count.
With a Gemini partner, the rule is stricter: our page on Gemini and Virgo compatibility shows their two Mercury points never sit closer than about 16 degrees.
When both partners are Virgos, our page on Virgo and Virgo compatibility shows how common that couple is and how Mercury ties them.
Its strongest sign is not its most common
Here is the part the books leave out. Dignity is a rank of quality. It is not a rank of time. I measured the share of all time Mercury spends in each sign.
| Sign | Share of all time with Mercury there. |
| Sagittarius, its detriment | 9.09 percent, the most of any sign. |
| Scorpio | 9.03 percent of the time. |
| Virgo, its home and exaltation | 8.45 percent, sixth of twelve. |
| Pisces, its detriment and fall | 8.24 percent of the time. |
| Gemini, its other home | 7.57 percent, the least of any sign. |
So Mercury spends more time in its weak sign Sagittarius than in its strong sign Virgo. Its other home, Gemini, comes last of all twelve. The main reason is Mercury’s own path. Its orbit is the most stretched of all the planets. It moves slowest at its far point from the Sun, which lies toward Sagittarius. It moves fastest at its near point, which lies toward Gemini.
Even so, 8.45 percent is more than one part in twelve, which is 8.33 percent. So Mercury in Virgo is a little more common than an even share. It is just not the peak.
How long Mercury stays in Virgo
Mercury turns back three times in most years, and four times in some. The word for this is retrograde. It means Mercury seems to move backward against the stars, as it passes between the Earth and the Sun. These backward loops decide how long it stays in a sign. I found two kinds of year, with no overlap.
| Kind of year | How long the visit lasts. |
| No backward loop in the sign | From 15.6 to 20.1 days, with a median of 16.5 days. |
| A backward loop in the sign | From 55 to 69 days from first entry to last exit, median 67 days. |
| Days truly inside Virgo in those long years | From 18.5 to 68.7 days, median 52.9 days. |
| Share of years with a loop in the sign | 317 years out of 800, or 39.6 percent. |
The median is the middle value, with half the cases above it and half below. So in a year with no loop, Mercury crosses Virgo in about 16 days.
The long years matter more than their number suggests. They hold 66.8 percent of all the time Mercury spends in Virgo. So about two in three people with Mercury in Virgo were born in a loop year. Our page on Mercury in Libra found the same pattern next door, at 67.6 percent.
A loop year can play out in three ways. Mercury can turn back inside Virgo and turn forward again without leaving. That happened in 117 of the 800 years. It can back out into Leo and come in a second time. That happened 91 times. Or it can pass into Libra, turn back, and come in again from that side. That happened 109 times.
The dates, year by year
Here are the recent and coming visits. Times are in UTC, the clock of Greenwich. New York time is four hours earlier in summer, so a time before 04:00 UTC falls on the day before in the US.
| Year | Mercury in Virgo, UTC. |
| In 2022 | Aug 4 06:57 to Aug 26 01:02, then Sep 23 12:04 to Oct 10 23:50. |
| In 2023 | Jul 28 21:30 to Oct 5 00:08, in one piece. |
| In 2024 | Jul 25 22:41 to Aug 15 00:11, then Sep 9 06:51 to Sep 26 08:09. |
| In 2025 | Sep 2 13:23 to Sep 18 10:06, a short year. |
| In 2026 | Aug 25 11:04 to Sep 10 16:21, a short year. |
| In 2027 | Aug 17 04:43 to Sep 3 11:36, a short year. |
| In 2028 | Aug 8 05:09 to Aug 27 13:07, a short year. |
| In 2029 | Jul 31 23:34 to Aug 27 02:23, then Sep 8 10:55 to Oct 8 12:39. |
| In 2030 | Jul 26 14:54 to Oct 1 10:49, in one piece. |
In US Eastern time, the 2026 visit runs from 7:04 a.m. on August 25 to 12:21 p.m. on September 10. The 2029 visit starts at 7:34 p.m. on July 31. Its first part ends at 10:23 p.m. on August 26, the evening before the UTC date.
Notice the rhythm. Loop years come in runs of two or three: 2016 and 2017, 2022 to 2024, 2029 and 2030. Then come four or five short years. The pattern repeats about every seven years. Mercury meets the Sun again every 116 days or so, and 22 of those cycles take 6.98 years.
In 2024, a birth between 15 August and 9 September falls in the gap. That person has Mercury in Leo, not Virgo, even though the dates sit between two Virgo visits. In 2022 and 2029 the gap sends Mercury into Libra instead. If you were born in one of those years, check the hour, not only the date.
Mercury retrograde in Virgo, 2026 to 2030
Of all the time Mercury spends in Virgo, 20.1 percent is spent moving backward. Over all signs, the figure is 19.2 percent. So a backward Mercury in Virgo is a shade more common than elsewhere, but only a shade. You can read what this means in a birth chart on our page on retrograde planets.
In 2026, 2027 and 2028, Mercury does not turn back in Virgo at all. The next two loops come in 2029 and 2030. A station is the moment Mercury seems to stand still before it changes direction.
| Event | Date and place, UTC. |
| 2029, turns back | Sep 2 12:14, at 1 degree 50 minutes of Libra. |
| 2029, back into Virgo | Sep 8 10:55, moving backward. |
| 2029, turns forward | Sep 25 02:02, at 17 degrees 27 minutes of Virgo. |
| 2030, turns back | Aug 16 01:23, at 14 degrees 29 minutes of Virgo. |
| 2030, turns forward | Sep 8 09:22, at 1 degree 7 minutes of Virgo. |
In US Eastern time, the 2029 forward turn falls at 10:02 p.m. on September 24. The 2030 backward turn falls at 9:23 p.m. on August 15. Both land a day before the UTC date.
The 2030 turn is worth a note. It stops at 14 degrees 29 minutes, inside the fifteenth degree of Virgo. That is the exact degree Lilly names for Mercury’s exaltation. Mercury does not favour that degree in general, though. Over 800 years, the fifteenth degree holds 3.34 percent of its Virgo time, against 3.33 percent for an even spread.
Reading Mercury in Virgo by Sun sign
Since the placement comes with three kinds of Sun, it reads three ways. The notes below follow the tradition and modern writers such as Robert Hand and Stephen Arroyo. They treat the Sun as the core self and Mercury as the way that self thinks and talks.
With the Sun in Virgo, mind and self point the same way. Both are ruled by Mercury, so the chart has one voice for work, for detail and for speech. The risk is a closed loop, where the mind checks the self and the self checks the mind, and no one else gets a say.
With the Sun in Leo, the self wants to shine and to lead. Mercury in Virgo adds a mind that edits before it speaks. This pair makes good directors, teachers and critics. You feel big and you speak with care. People can miss the warmth under the precise words.
Where this sign pushes one way, Mercury in Leo answers with warmth and pride.
With the Sun in Libra, the self seeks balance and fair terms. Mercury in Virgo gives it a sharp eye for what is wrong in a deal. You want peace, and your mind keeps noting the flaws. The two can pull apart, or they can make a fair judge.
The same sorting instinct shapes love when Venus, not Mercury, lands in the sign: Venus in Virgo is in fall, and that rule explains the critical streak.
What the tradition says it does
Vettius Valens, in the Anthologies, links Mercury to writing, numbers, trade and all skilled work. In its own sign, the tradition reads those gifts as free to act. Chris Brennan and Demetra George explain this for modern readers. A planet in its own home can act on its own terms. It does not need the help of a host planet.
That is the strength. The known weakness is the other side of it. A mind that sorts well can sort too much. Psychological astrologers in the line of Liz Greene read the Virgo love of order as a way to hold worry at bay. Mercury here can turn its fine eye on the self and find nothing good enough.
Modern authors read the chart as a whole. No single factor speaks alone. The house, the aspects and the Sun’s sign all change the picture. Use the dignity and the Sun sign split as a first step, not the last word.
The method, so you can redo it
A number no one can check is worth nothing. Here is how I got these.
I used the astronomy-engine library. For each moment, I took the apparent place of Mercury and the Sun, seen from the centre of the Earth. I turned each into a tropical longitude, measured along the path of the Sun from the spring equinox of that date.
For the main count, I stepped through time every six hours from 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400. Each time Mercury or the Sun changed sign, or Mercury changed direction, I narrowed the moment by halving the step until it was exact to a fraction of a second. Then I added up the exact time in each pair of signs. That gave 26,511 events.
For the check, I used a second route with no search at all. I sampled every hour over the same 800 years, 7,012,656 points, with a separate routine for the Sun. The shares matched to within 0.01 percent. I then checked every date from 2026 to 2030 against JPL Horizons, the NASA ephemeris service. Every sign change matched to within four minutes. Every station matched to within five minutes.
Why 800 years? Short windows can drift. Over 1950 to 2010, Virgo Suns make up 49.1 percent of Mercury in Virgo, against 49.6 percent over 800 years. The gap is small here, but for other planets it is large, so I use the long window by default.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mercury exalted in Virgo?
Yes. Ptolemy and Lilly both place Mercury’s exaltation in Virgo, with Lilly naming the fifteenth degree. Virgo is also one of Mercury’s two homes, the only case where a planet holds both titles in one sign.
Can a Leo have Mercury in Virgo?
Yes. Over 800 years, 36.6 percent of people with Mercury in Virgo have a Leo Sun. Seen from the other side, 36.1 percent of Leo Suns have Mercury in Virgo.
How common is Mercury in Virgo?
Mercury spends 8.45 percent of all time in Virgo, sixth of the twelve signs. It spends the most time in Sagittarius, at 9.09 percent, and the least in Gemini, at 7.57 percent.
How long is Mercury in Virgo each year?
About 16 to 20 days in a year with no retrograde there. In a year with a backward loop, the visit runs 55 to 69 days from first entry to last exit.
When is Mercury next in Virgo?
The 2026 visit ended on 10 September. The next one runs from 17 August 2027 at 04:43 UTC to 3 September 2027 at 11:36 UTC.
When is the next Mercury retrograde in Virgo?
In 2029. Mercury turns back on 2 September 2029 in early Libra, returns to Virgo on 8 September, and turns forward on 25 September at 17 degrees of Virgo, all in UTC. The next one follows in August 2030.
What are the weaknesses of Mercury in Virgo?
The tradition names the same gift turned too far: a mind that finds fault faster than it finds worth. It shows most when the critical eye turns on the self.
