Here is a fact about the Virgo sign that only one other sign shares, and Virgo holds the cleaner version of it. If the Sun was in Virgo when you were born, the planet that rules your sign has a near even chance of sitting in Virgo too. I checked the sky every 72 minutes from 1600 to 2400. Virgo scored 49.5 percent. That is a coin flip.
No other sign lands near the middle like this. Leo scores 100 percent, every time, with no exceptions. Sagittarius scores 10.2 percent. Virgo sits between them, and the reason is a hard fact about how Mercury moves. This page shows the counts, the real dates, and the parts of the Virgo sign that the usual trait list leaves out.
Mercury is at home for half of all Virgos, and that is a coin flip
Start with the frame this site uses. A birth chart is a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one part of life. The planets are the furniture. The sign on each room sets the style of that room.
A ruling planet is the body the old writers put in charge of a sign. That sign is the planet’s home, or domicile. Mercury runs Virgo. Mars runs Aries. Saturn runs Capricorn.
Now ask a plain question. If the Sun was in your sign at birth, is that sign’s ruler in the same sign? For a Capricorn, is Saturn in Capricorn? The answer is no most of the time. Saturn goes where it likes.
I checked the sky every 72 minutes from 1600 to 2400, a span of 800 years. Here is where each sign lands.
| Name of the zodiac sign in question | Planet that rules it in the old scheme | Share of people with that Sun sign whose ruler sits in the same sign |
|---|---|---|
| Leo | The Sun | 100.00 percent of them. |
| Virgo | Mercury | 49.50 percent of them. |
| Gemini | Mercury | 47.85 percent of them. |
| Taurus | Venus | 24.35 percent of them. |
| Libra | Venus | 23.52 percent of them. |
| Scorpio | Mars | 14.21 percent of them. |
| Aries | Mars | 12.27 percent of them. |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 10.22 percent of them. |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 10.15 percent of them. |
| Cancer | The Moon | 8.20 percent of them. |
The Jupiter and Saturn rows count whole laps only, so a part lap at the end of the window cannot tip them. Jupiter is measured over 67 full laps, from 1607 to 2402. Saturn is measured over 27 full laps, from 1613 to 2408.
Read the Virgo row against the two ends. Leo gets 100. Cancer gets 8.20. Virgo gets 49.50, the top score after Leo, and it sits near half.
That number is worth saying in plain words. Toss a coin. Heads, your Mercury is in Virgo. Tails, it is not. The odds are that close.
Two Virgos in love make two tosses, and our page on Virgo and Virgo compatibility counts how many couples land heads twice.
Our wider guide to all twelve zodiac signs runs this method across the year. This page stays on one sign and goes deeper.
Why the answer is a coin flip and not a lottery
The cause is orbital, not mystical. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. From Earth, it never appears far from the Sun in the sky.
Astronomers call that gap the elongation. I measured it. I scanned every 72 minutes from 1600 to 2400. While the Sun was in Virgo, Mercury never got more than 27.4 degrees away from it.
A sign is a 30 degree slice of the sky. Mercury’s whole range of motion is smaller than one sign. So Mercury is pinned to the Sun’s neighbourhood, and the Sun’s neighbourhood is Virgo for a month each year.
Compare that with Jupiter. Jupiter takes twelve years to circle the zodiac. It sits in Virgo for one year in twelve, whatever the Sun is doing. That is why the Sagittarius sign scores about 10 percent and Virgo scores about 49.
Our guide to the planet Mercury in a chart covers what that fast, close orbit does to the rest of a reading.
Nine signs your Mercury cannot be in, if your Sun is in Virgo
This is the part nobody writes down, and it is a hard fact. Because Mercury stays within 30 degrees of the Sun, a Virgo Sun allows Mercury only three signs. Nine signs score an absolute zero.
Here is the full split from the same 72 minute scan of 1600 to 2400.
| Sign that Mercury occupies at birth | Share of all Virgo Suns, 1600 to 2400 |
|---|---|
| Leo, the sign before Virgo | 14.06 percent of them. |
| Virgo, the Sun’s own sign | 49.50 percent of them. |
| Libra, the sign after Virgo | 36.44 percent of them. |
| Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer | 0 percent of them. |
| Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn | 0 percent of them. |
| Aquarius and Pisces | 0 percent of them. |
The three live figures add to 100 percent.
So a Virgo with Mercury in Aquarius does not exist. Neither does a Virgo with Mercury in Cancer. If a chart shows one, the chart is wrong.
A Virgo’s Mercury can still meet an Aquarius partner’s Mercury by trine, and our page on Virgo and Aquarius compatibility counts the couples who have it.
Notice the lean. Libra collects 36.44 percent and Leo only 14.06 percent. Mercury spends more of a Virgo season ahead of the Sun than behind it, because of where its speedy stretch falls in that month.
That Leo slice is small but real, and our page on Leo and Virgo compatibility follows it into the most common Sun sign couple in the US.
The same Leo slice is the only place where a Virgo’s Mercury can meet a Cancer’s, and our page on how rarely Cancer and Virgo Mercury signs match counts those couples.
Virgo dates: the printed start day is not the only real one
Google’s AI Overview, Wikipedia and The Old Farmer’s Almanac all print the same pair. August 23 to September 22. That pair is a rounding, and the sky ignores it.
I checked every day from 1940 to 2030. That is 33,238 days across 91 years. Over those years, in Universal Time, the Sun entered Virgo on three different calendar days: August 22, August 23 and August 24. In New York time, it was always August 22 or August 23.
In Universal Time, only five signs of the twelve spread across three days like that. They are Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Aquarius. The other seven use two days.
Born on August 23? The printed table is wrong almost a third of the time
This is the weakest day in the Virgo range. Of the 91 years I checked, the common table labels an August 23 birth as Virgo. It was wrong in 28 of them.
That is 31 percent. Close to one in three people born on that date are still Leo, and a real chart says so. Our guide to the Leo sign shows the same edge from the other side.
Born on September 23? The table is wrong one year in five
The closing edge is softer but still real. The table calls September 23 a Libra birth, and that label failed in 20 years out of 91.
That is 22 percent. One person in five born on September 23 is a Virgo. Here is the whole edge, day by day.
| Birthday near the edge of the Virgo season | Label the common printed table gives you | Number of years where that label is wrong, out of 91 |
|---|---|---|
| Born 22 August | Leo | Wrong in 0 years out of 91. |
| Born 23 August | Virgo | Wrong in 28 years out of 91. |
| Born 24 August | Virgo | Wrong in 0 years out of 91. |
| Born 22 September | Virgo | Wrong in 1 year out of 91. |
| Born 23 September | Libra | Wrong in 20 years out of 91. |
| Born 24 September | Libra | Wrong in 0 years out of 91. |
No printed table can fix this. The Sun crosses the line at a clock time, not on a date. You need your birth hour, and nothing else will do.
A couple born on either side of September 23 is the subject of our guide to Virgo and Libra compatibility.
Virgo season runs 30.900 days, which puts it eighth of twelve
The twelve solar seasons are not equal in length. Virgo runs 30.900 days on average over 1600 to 2400, or 8.460 percent of the year.
That ranks eighth from the short end, so Virgo is on the long side. Capricorn is the shortest at 29.446 days. Cancer is the longest at 31.451 days.
The cause is the shape of Earth’s orbit. Earth swings closest to the Sun in early January, at a point called perihelion. Near that point Earth moves fastest, so the Sun appears to race through the winter signs and to dawdle through the summer ones.
My twelve figures add up to 365.2427 days. The tropical year is 365.2422 days. The gap is under a minute, which tells me the count is sound.
There is a small human upshot. More days means more births. A Virgo is a touch more common than a Capricorn, by about 5 percent in relative terms.
In real US births the gap is wider, about 117 Virgos for every 100 Capricorns, as our page on Virgo and Capricorn compatibility counts.
The Virgo sign in one short block
| Question people ask about the Virgo sign | The short answer, with a note where it is needed |
|---|---|
| Position in the zodiac order | Sixth of the twelve signs. |
| Dates printed by almanacs and search engines | 23 August to 22 September. |
| Dates the sky actually uses | Start slides across 22, 23 or 24 August. |
| Element it belongs to | Earth, with Taurus and Capricorn. |
| Modality, meaning how it handles change | Mutable, with Gemini, Sagittarius and Pisces. |
| Ruling planet in the old scheme | Mercury, by night. |
| Planet exalted here, meaning at its strongest | Mercury again, which is unique. |
| Planet in exile here, meaning far from home | Jupiter, which rules the opposite sign. |
| Planet in fall here, meaning at its weakest | Venus. |
| Symbol used for the sign | The Maiden, holding a sheaf of wheat. |
| House it matches in the standard order | The sixth, covering work and health. |
| Length of the season on average | 30.900 days. |
Two rows in that table deserve a section each, because both are unusual.
Mercury rules Virgo and is exalted in Virgo, which happens nowhere else
Ancient astrology gave each planet two kinds of strong seat. One is rulership, the planet’s home. The other is exaltation, a sign where the planet is treated as an honoured guest with extra power.
Ptolemy set out both lists in the Tetrabiblos, written around 150 AD. Vettius Valens used the same scheme in the same century. Across the whole grid, one planet holds both seats in one sign. That planet is Mercury, and the sign is Virgo.
Mars rules Aries and is exalted in Capricorn. Venus rules Taurus and is exalted in Pisces. Only Mercury keeps both in the same room. Our guide to exaltation and what it means in a chart walks through the full grid.
Mercury also rules Gemini, but it is not exalted there. So the two Mercury signs are not twins. William Lilly read Gemini as the sign of speech and exchange in Christian Astrology in 1647, and Virgo as the sign of craft, service and careful work.
That split matters when you read a chart. A Gemini Mercury talks. A Virgo Mercury edits.
Our page on Mercury in Virgo counts who is born with it, and more than a third of them are Leo Suns.
For the other home, our page on Mercury in Gemini gives the exact visits from 2026 to 2030 and shows it is Mercury’s fastest sign.
Venus is in fall here, and no modern planet ever claimed the sign
Fall is the opposite of exaltation. A planet in fall is the guest nobody made room for. Venus is in fall in Virgo, and that is the classical position, not a modern add on.
The logic is old and simple. Venus is exalted in Pisces, and Virgo sits directly opposite Pisces on the wheel. Whatever is highest in one sign is lowest in the sign across from it.
Read plainly, this says Virgo is a poor room for ease, indulgence and letting things slide. It says nothing about whether a Virgo is loved. Venus in Virgo asks for usefulness where it would rather ask for pleasure.
Now the modern half, stated honestly. When Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were found, astrologers handed each one a sign. Uranus went to Aquarius. Neptune went to Pisces. Pluto went to Scorpio.
Virgo received nothing. Some writers proposed Chiron, discovered in 1977, as a Virgo ruler. That proposal never won broad agreement, and most working astrologers leave Virgo with Mercury alone.
That is a real gap in the modern scheme, and it is worth saying rather than papering over.
Virgo traits, read from the structure rather than from a list
Most pages hand you the same six adjectives. Analytical. Practical. Critical. Organised. Modest. Anxious. Those words are not wrong, but they arrive with no reason attached.
The structure gives you the reason. Virgo is an earth sign, so its concern is what holds up in the physical world. Our guide to the earth element in a chart covers that whole family.
Virgo is also mutable, which means it belongs to the closing third of a season. Mutable signs hand one season over to the next, so they adjust rather than launch. Our guide to the mutable modality explains that timing.
Put those two together. Earth wants a solid result. Mutable wants to keep adjusting. A sign that wants a solid result and keeps adjusting is a sign that revises. That is where the perfectionist label comes from, and now it has a source.
Add Mercury on top, the planet of measuring and sorting, sitting in its own sign and exalted there. The result is a mind built for detail work rather than for grand statements.
The classical link to the sixth house completes the picture. That house covers daily work, routine and health. That house covers the tasks you repeat rather than the ones you announce.
Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo both read Virgo in modern terms as the drive to make something useful out of raw material. That reading fits the structure above, and it is kinder than the anxious pedant cliché.
A Virgo Sun does not make Virgo rising any more likely
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at your birth minute. It changes every two hours, so it needs your birth time.
The pace is not even, though, and our page on Virgo and Sagittarius compatibility times the stretch from Virgo to Sagittarius at over seven hours in New York.
A common belief says a Virgo Sun pulls the chart toward a Virgo ascendant. I tested it on US births, spread across the country by population and across the clock by the real hour of birth in the CDC’s 2024 national birth records.
Virgo rising shows up in 9.2 percent of Virgo Sun births. Across all US births it shows up in 10.4 percent. So a Virgo Sun does not pull the ascendant toward Virgo. It pushes it slightly away. Virgo rising with a Virgo Sun means a birth close to sunrise, and between 3 and 7 a.m. US births run about a quarter below the hourly average. With births spread evenly over the clock, the two figures match, at 10.3 against 10.3 percent.
So there is no pull. The two facts are independent, exactly as our Scorpio, Leo and Capricorn pages found for their own signs.
Virgo rising runs above the flat 8.33 percent that twelve equal signs would give. That is not about Virgo Suns. It is about how fast Virgo climbs the eastern horizon at the latitudes where most people are born. Our guide to the ascendant and your rising sign explains that mechanism.
Virgo compatibility, without the scoreboard
Search results rank Taurus, Capricorn and Pisces as the Virgo matches, and rank the fire signs as the misses. That ranking compares two Suns and stops there.
Two Suns are two pieces of furniture in two houses of twelve rooms each. The rest of the furniture decides most of what happens.
The Sun to Sun reading is still worth something as a starting sketch. Earth with earth shares a working rhythm. Virgo with Pisces sits on an axis, which pairs opposite skills.
The honest version is this. A Sun match is one data point out of ten or more. Use it, and do not end there.
How I measured all of this, so you can check it
Every figure on this page came from the same toolkit, and the method is worth stating plainly.
For the dates, I walked every day from 1940 to 2030 and asked the ephemeris where the Sun really was. That is 33,238 days. I compared each day against the printed table and logged every mismatch.
For the season lengths, I timed every crossing from 1600 to 2400, by two separate routes, astronomy-engine and the Swiss Ephemeris. For the Mercury counts, I checked the sky every 72 minutes from 1600 to 2400. For the ascendant, I read the Sun and the horizon every ten minutes of the clock, on every day from 1940 to 2030. A second run with Swiss Ephemeris, on a regular spread of days, gave the same shares to within 0.1 point. I used the tropical zodiac and whole sign houses.
For the ascendant, I weighted US places by population, with their real time zones and daylight saving time. Each clock minute was weighted by how many babies were born at that minute in the CDC’s 2024 records, month by month and weekday by weekday.
I then ran two checks. My counts have to add up to the total, and my percentages have to add to 100. They do, in every table above.
I also reran the Mercury count with a second library, Swiss Ephemeris, timing each sign change to the second. Virgo came out at 49.50 percent again. The coin flip holds, the three allowed signs hold, and the nine zeros hold.
Mercury’s largest gap from the Sun changes with the Sun’s sign. Over 1600 to 2400, my dense scan gives 22.4 degrees for Sagittarius, the lowest. It gives 27.8 degrees for Aries, the highest, and 27.4 degrees for Virgo. So the real spread is 22.4 to 27.8 degrees.
Frequently asked questions about the Virgo sign
What are the Virgo dates?
Almanacs print 23 August to 22 September. The real start slides across 22, 23 or 24 August. A birth on 23 August is mislabelled in 31 percent of years.
What is the Virgo sign meaning in a chart?
Virgo is the sixth sign, an earth sign with a mutable rhythm, ruled by Mercury. In a chart it marks the room where you sort, refine and make things work.
What is a Virgo personality like?
Analytical, practical and hard to satisfy. The revising habit comes from the mix of an earth element with a mutable rhythm, not from a personality flaw.
What are the main Virgo traits?
Attention to detail, a service instinct, a taste for order and a running internal edit. Mercury’s rule and exaltation here push all four.
What is a Virgo weakness?
Over correction. A sign built to revise struggles to call anything finished, which reads as criticism from the outside and as worry from the inside.
What sign is a Virgo soulmate?
Popular lists name Taurus, Capricorn and Pisces. Those are Sun to Sun sketches. Your Moon, Venus and ascendant carry more weight in a real comparison.
Is Virgo an earth sign or a water sign?
Earth, with Taurus and Capricorn. The Maiden symbol leads some people to guess water, and that guess is wrong.
What planet rules the Virgo sign?
Mercury. Mercury also rules Gemini, and Virgo is the one sign where a planet both rules and is exalted.
Can a Virgo have Mercury in Aquarius?
No. A Virgo Sun allows Mercury three signs only: Leo, Virgo and Libra. The other nine are impossible.
I was born on 23 August. Am I a Leo or a Virgo?
You are one or the other, and only your birth hour settles it. Across 91 years, 28 of those birthdays landed in Leo and 63 in Virgo.
Are Virgos good with money?
The sign’s habits of tracking and revising suit budgeting. Your second house and your Venus placement describe your money life far better than your Sun sign does.
Does a Virgo Sun make Virgo rising more likely?
No. Among US births, Virgo rising appears in 9.2 percent of Virgo Sun charts, against 10.4 percent of all charts. A Virgo Sun with Virgo rising means a birth near sunrise, and fewer babies arrive in those early hours.
