Nine Sagittarius people out of ten do not have Jupiter in Sagittarius. That one line undoes most of what gets written about this sign.
Every page tells you the Archer is ruled by Jupiter. That is true, and it is the start of the story rather than the end of it. Jupiter needs close to twelve years to walk the whole zodiac, and it sits in one sign for roughly a year at a time. So the odds that your ruler was home on the day you were born are about one in ten. I counted it over 67 full laps of Jupiter, from 1607 to 2402. The answer is 10.22 percent.
Compare that with Leo. The Sun rules Leo, and a Leo is a person born with the Sun in Leo. The ruler is home 100 percent of the time, a figure our guide to the Leo sign works through in full. The Archer sits at the other end of that scale. Your ruler is a traveller, and where it went is the part that describes you.
This page gives you the dates, the traits and four counts you can check for yourself. Our wider guide to all twelve zodiac signs runs the same method across the year.
The ruler of this sign is almost never at home
Start with the words. A ruling planet is the body the old writers put in charge of a sign. That sign is called the planet’s home, or its domicile. Mars runs Aries. Venus runs Taurus. Jupiter runs the Archer.
Venus never reaches this sign in a Taurus chart, a limit our page on Taurus and Sagittarius compatibility explains.
Now ask the plain question. If you were born with the Sun in this sign, was Jupiter in it too?
The answer is no nine times out of ten. Jupiter goes where it pleases. A birth chart is a house with twelve rooms, one room per area of life, and the planets are the furniture. Most of the time the landlord of the ninth room is out of town.
Here is the count. I took every moment with the Sun in this sign across 67 full laps of Jupiter, from 1607 to 2402, and read off where Jupiter stood.
| Sign that Jupiter stood in at birth | Share of Archer charts, 67 full laps of Jupiter, 1607 to 2402 |
|---|---|
| Scorpio | 10.42 percent of them. |
| Sagittarius, the home sign | 10.22 percent of them. |
| Libra | 10.02 percent of them. |
| Capricorn | 9.60 percent of them. |
| Virgo | 9.33 percent of them. |
| Aquarius | 8.55 percent of them. |
| Pisces | 8.00 percent of them. |
| Leo | 7.20 percent of them. |
| Cancer | 7.16 percent of them. |
| Taurus | 6.85 percent of them. |
| Gemini | 6.40 percent of them. |
| Aries | 6.25 percent of them. |
Read the top of the table closely. The home sign is not first. Scorpio edges it out, and Libra sits just behind, so the top three are level in practice.
Why I counted whole laps of Jupiter
Jupiter takes 11.86 years to circle the zodiac. A span of sixty years holds only five of those trips. That is a small number of laps, so a count on it picks up a quirk of the years chosen rather than a fact about the sky.
So I counted whole laps only. The span runs from Jupiter’s entry into Aries in 1607 to the same entry in 2402, which is 67 laps. A part lap at the end would tip the count toward the last signs Jupiter crossed.
The home sign comes second, at 10.22 percent. Scorpio leads at 10.42 and Libra follows at 10.02. The gaps are a fifth of a point. The headline holds either way: nine charts in ten have Jupiter somewhere else. Take the group, not the league table. Any page that prints a neat order for Jupiter across sixty years is reading noise.
The bottom of the table is worth your attention too. Aries, Gemini and Taurus sit lowest, between 6.2 and 6.9 percent. Part of the reason is speed. Jupiter’s path is an ellipse, and it runs fastest near its closest point to the Sun, which now lies in Aries. So it spends less of its life in Aries and Taurus than anywhere else.
Your Jupiter return, with real dates
Here is a use for all this. Astrologers speak of a Jupiter return, meaning the moment Jupiter comes back to the exact spot it held at your birth. It happens about every twelve years.
I measured the gap between visits across 1900 to 2100. The mean is 11.86 years. The shortest gap was 11.30 years and the longest 11.96. So the rule of thumb is sound, and the drift is real.
If your Jupiter is in the home sign, these are the dates it entered:
| Date Jupiter first entered this sign | How old an Archer born in that year would be now |
|---|---|
| 9 December 1994 | Around 31 years old. |
| 24 November 2006 | Around 19 years old. |
| 8 November 2018 | Around 7 years old. |
| 22 October 2030 | Not yet born. |
Notice the drift. Each entry lands earlier in the year than the last. Over four visits it slid from December to October. No table of fixed dates can hold that, which is why you need a real chart and not a chart of thumb rules. Our guide to Jupiter in a chart covers what the planet does once you find it.
Our page on Jupiter in Sagittarius gives every visit from 1910 to 2100 and the odds for each Sun sign.
Sagittarius dates: three start days, not one
Google, Britannica and the almanacs print the same pair of dates. November 22 to December 21. The Old Farmer’s Almanac prints November 23 instead. They cannot both be right, and neither is right every year.
The Sun does not care about a calendar. It crosses into this sign when it crosses, and that moment slides around. I checked every day from 1940 to 2030, which is 33,238 days in all.
Across those 91 years the Sun began this season on three different calendar days: November 21, November 22 and November 23. In Universal Time, only five signs of the twelve spread across three days that way. They are Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, the Archer and Aquarius. The other seven use two days.
Our guide to the Virgo sign measures the same three day spread at the other end of the summer, with 22, 23 and 24 August as the possible start dates.
Born on November 22? Read this part first
This is the worst day in the whole table, and it is not close.
Of the 91 years I checked, the common table calls a November 22 birth an Archer. It was wrong in 44 of them. That is 48 percent. Close to half the people born on that date are Scorpio, and a chart would tell them so.
| Birthday near the edge of this season | What the common table calls you | Number of years where that label is wrong, out of 91 |
|---|---|---|
| Born 21 November | Scorpio | Wrong in 0 years out of 91. |
| Born 22 November | Sagittarius | Wrong in 44 years out of 91. |
| Born 23 November | Sagittarius | Wrong in 0 years out of 91. |
| Born 21 December | Sagittarius | Wrong in 5 years out of 91. |
| Born 22 December | Capricorn | Wrong in 8 years out of 91. |
So the Almanac’s November 23 start is the safer of the two published tables, and it costs you the true Archers born on the 22nd. Neither table can work without a birth hour. Our guide to the Scorpio sign shows the same edge from the other side.
The border has a twist in the sky too: the Scorpion’s brightest stars now stand inside this sign, as our guide to Scorpio and Sagittarius compatibility shows.
The hour also decides whether the Sun was up at all, and our page on the Sun in Sagittarius shows that six US Archers in ten are born at night.
This season is the second shortest of the year
The twelve seasons of the Sun are not equal. Ours runs 29.557 days on average over 1600 to 2400. Only Capricorn is shorter, at 29.446 days. Cancer is the longest at 31.451 days.
The reason sits in the shape of the orbit. Earth swings closest to the Sun in early January, a point called perihelion. Near that point it moves fastest, so the Sun appears to race through the signs. Our guide to the Capricorn sign pins the perihelion between 1 and 5 January in all 91 years I checked, and the Archer’s season sits right next door to it.
| Rank among the twelve solar seasons | Name of the sign in question | Mean length of that season | Share of the year it takes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1, the shortest | Capricorn | 29.446 days | 8.062 percent of the year. |
| 2, second shortest | Sagittarius | 29.557 days | 8.092 percent of the year. |
| 3, third shortest | Aquarius | 29.592 days | 8.102 percent of the year. |
| 4, fourth shortest | Scorpio | 29.899 days | 8.186 percent of the year. |
| 12, the longest | Cancer | 31.451 days | 8.611 percent of the year. |
My twelve figures add up to 365.2427 days. The tropical year is 365.2422 days. The gap is under a minute, which tells me the count is sound.
There is a small human upshot. Fewer days means fewer births. An Archer is a touch rarer than a Cancer, by about 6 percent in relative terms. That is a real effect and a small one.
The Archer in one short block
| Question people ask about this sign | The short answer, with a note |
|---|---|
| Position in the zodiac order | Ninth of the twelve signs. |
| Dates printed by almanacs | 22 November to 21 December. |
| Dates the sky actually uses | Start slides across 21, 22 or 23 November. |
| Element it belongs to | Fire, with Aries and Leo. |
| Modality, meaning how it handles change | Mutable, with Gemini, Virgo and Pisces. |
| Ruling planet in the old scheme | Jupiter, by day. |
| Planet that struggles here | Mercury, which is in detriment. |
| Symbol used for the sign | The Archer, drawn as a centaur with a bow. |
| House it is linked with | The ninth house. |
One of the few signs Ptolemy would still recognise
Claudius Ptolemy laid out the scheme in the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. Vettius Valens worked the same rulerships through real charts in that same century. William Lilly still printed them in Christian Astrology in 1647.
In that scheme each of the five wandering planets holds two signs. One is the day house, or diurnal home. The other is the night house. Jupiter holds the Archer by day and Pisces by night.
So the two signs share a ruler yet sit in a square, a pair our page on Pisces and Sagittarius compatibility counts in US births.
Ptolemy says Jupiter got this sign because it stands in a trine to Leo, the Sun’s home, a link we follow in our guide to Leo and Sagittarius compatibility.
Then the telescope arrived and the scheme was cut about. Pluto was found in 1930 and Scorpio was handed to it. Uranus took Aquarius. Neptune took Pisces, which means Jupiter lost half its old ground.
Jupiter kept this one. No writer has proposed a new ruler for the Archer, and no body past Saturn has been parked here. So an old passage on this sign and a new one point at the same planet. That is not true for a quarter of the zodiac.
Mercury is in exile here, and nothing is exalted
The old writers scored planets by sign. A planet in the sign opposite its home is in detriment, meaning it works against the grain. Mercury rules Gemini, which sits opposite. So Mercury is in detriment in the Archer.
That is the piece the traits lists skip. Mercury stands for the small, close, precise kind of thinking. Detail, lists, the fine print. In a sign built for the long view it has to work uphill. The blunt speech every page reports is this in plain sight: the answer arrives before the tact does.
The record here is short, and it pays to say how short.
| Score the tradition gives a planet placed here | Which body the old books name | Age and standing of that claim |
|---|---|---|
| Ruler, meaning the sign is its home | Jupiter, by day | Ancient, from Ptolemy on, never disputed. |
| Detriment, meaning it works against the grain | Mercury, which rules Gemini opposite | Ancient, and it follows from the rule of opposites. |
| Exaltation, meaning a planet at its strongest | None in the classical scheme | The old lists leave this sign empty. |
| Fall, meaning a planet at its weakest | None in the classical scheme | Empty as well, which is rare. |
| Modern ruler added since 1930 | None proposed | No writer has put a new body here. |
Two of those rows are blank, and that is the point. Four signs carry neither an exaltation nor a fall. This is one of them. No planet peaks here and none bottoms out.
Sagittarius traits, read from the structure
Now the traits, built from the parts rather than copied from a list.
Take the element first. Fire in the old reading means heat and drive aimed outward at the world. Our guide to the fire element works through what the three fire signs share.
Now the modality. Mutable signs close a season and hand it over. They bend. Fixed signs hold a line and cardinal signs start things. Our guide to the mutable modality sets out the three-way split.
Put fire and mutable together and you get drive that will not stay pointed at one thing. That is curiosity when it lands well. It is restlessness when it does not. Both readings describe the same wiring.
Then add Jupiter. In a chart Jupiter stands for growth, scope and the wish to know more. A sign run by that body puts the far horizon in the front seat. So the Sagittarius traits every page lists come from one place. This is the sign where the answer is assumed to be further out.
Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo both read the sign this way in their modern work: the search for meaning, rather than a taste for plane tickets. The old writers were blunter and called it the house of the god, the place of long journeys and of faith.
Which brings back the opening. If your Jupiter sits in Cancer, your search for meaning runs through family and home. If it sits in Virgo, it runs through craft and method. Same Sun, different chart, different person. The ninth house in a chart is where that search takes shape.
Jupiter in Cancer is exalted, a tie our page on Cancer and Sagittarius compatibility follows.
The planets an Archer is allowed to have
Some placements are ruled out by the sky itself. Mercury never strays far from the Sun, and neither does Venus. So a Sun in this sign locks the two of them into a short list.
I scanned 800 years of positions, from 1600 to 2400, every 72 minutes. Mercury never got further than 22.4 degrees from the Sun while the Sun was here. Venus never got further than 47.3 degrees.
| Where the inner planet can fall for an Archer | Share of charts holding Mercury there | Share of charts holding Venus there |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio, the sign before | 20.22 percent of them. | 28.46 percent of them. |
| Sagittarius, the same sign | 58.58 percent of them. | 23.89 percent of them. |
| Capricorn, the sign after | 21.19 percent of them. | 28.62 percent of them. |
| Libra, two signs before | Never, 0 percent of them. | 9.30 percent of them. |
| Aquarius, two signs after | Never, 0 percent of them. | 9.74 percent of them. |
| The seven remaining signs | Never, 0 percent of them. | Never, 0 percent of them. |
Mercury has three options. Venus has five. The other seven signs are shut, and no birth hour opens them.
The Venus shares need one warning. Venus repeats its pattern on an eight-year rhythm, so a short span of years does not sample it evenly. That is why I used 800 years. Capricorn and Scorpio come out level at the top, a sixth of a point apart. The home sign follows at 23.89 percent, close to one Archer in four. The set of five signs never moves, and neither do the seven zeroes.
The zeroes are the useful part. If a site tells you it has read your Venus in Leo as an Archer, close the tab. It cannot happen.
Sagittarius compatibility, without the scoreboard
The standard answer says fire and air. Aries, Leo, Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. There is a reason behind it, and it is not a score.
One of the air pairs is ruled by the two benefics, Venus and Jupiter, and our page on Libra and Sagittarius compatibility counts how many US couples it joins.
Signs of the same element sit 120 degrees apart. That angle is called a trine, and the old books read it as easy going. Signs two apart sit 60 degrees apart, a sextile, read as friendly.
Gemini sits opposite, at 180 degrees. Every list prints that pair as a clash. The old reading is subtler. Opposite signs share an axis and split one job between them: Gemini gathers the near facts, the Archer draws the wide conclusion. That is a working pair or a shouting match, and the rest of the chart decides which.
Here is the honest caveat. Sun sign matching uses one piece of information out of dozens. Two people with the same Sun can have Venus in different signs, and Venus is the piece that governs how someone loves. Use a real chart for anything that matters. Our pages on the Sagittarius man and the Sagittarius woman go further into how this plays out.
How I measured all of this
You should be able to check a number, so here is the method.
For the date work I stepped through every day from 1940 to 2030. That is 33,238 days. For each one I read the true longitude of the Sun, which is its position along the zodiac belt in degrees. Then I compared the sign the sky gave with the sign the printed table gives.
For the season lengths I timed every crossing from 1600 to 2400, by two separate routes, astronomy-engine and the Swiss Ephemeris. For the Mercury and Venus counts I checked the sky every 72 minutes from 1600 to 2400 and kept every moment with the Sun in this sign. For Jupiter I used the same step over 67 full laps, from 1607 to 2402. A second library, Swiss Ephemeris, timed each sign change to the second, and the two runs agree. I used the tropical zodiac, the one measured from the spring equinox and used across the West. Houses are whole sign houses, so each sign is one room.
All the shares add to 100 percent. Where signs sit less than a quarter of a point apart, read them as level rather than ranked.
One number surprises people. Mercury can stray about 28 degrees from the Sun, yet while the Sun sits in this sign it never got further than 22.4 degrees in 800 years. Mercury’s widest swings fall in other seasons. The sign count of three holds either way.
Frequently asked questions about the Sagittarius sign
What are the real Sagittarius dates?
Almanacs print 22 November to 21 December. The sky starts the season on 21, 22 or 23 November, depending on the year. It ends on 21 or 22 December. A birth hour settles it.
What is a Sagittarius personality like?
Fire gives outward drive. Mutable makes that drive move around. Jupiter aims it at scope and meaning. The result reads as open, direct and hungry for the wider view. The same wiring reads as restless when there is nothing large to aim at.
Is Sagittarius a water sign?
No. It is one of the three fire signs, with Aries and Leo. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
What planet rules the Sagittarius sign?
Jupiter, and Jupiter alone. It has held the sign since Ptolemy and no modern body has replaced it. In my counts only about one Archer in ten has Jupiter sitting in the sign at birth.
What is a Sagittarius weakness?
Bluntness and a short attention span for detail. The structural reason is Mercury in detriment, meaning the planet of fine detail is working in the sign opposite its home.
Who is a Sagittarius most compatible with?
The easy angles run to Aries, Leo, Libra and Aquarius. Gemini sits opposite and is the demanding pair rather than the bad one. Treat all of this as a starting point, and read two whole charts before you trust it.
Can a Sagittarius have Venus in Leo?
No. Venus never gets more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so a Sun in this sign puts Venus in Libra, Scorpio, the home sign, Capricorn or Aquarius. Leo is out of reach.
I was born on November 22. Am I a Scorpio or a Sagittarius?
It depends on your birth year and your birth hour. Across 1940 to 2030 the common table got that date wrong 44 years out of 91. Look up your own chart before you settle it.
What is the Sagittarius sign symbol?
The Archer, drawn as a centaur pulling a bow. The glyph is an arrow with a short line across the shaft. The image is older than Greek astrology and the Babylonians used a mounted archer for it.
When is my Jupiter return?
About every 11.86 years, so near ages 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60. The gap ran from 11.30 to 11.96 years in my scan of 1900 to 2100, so read your own chart rather than the round number.
Why is my Sagittarius friend nothing like the description?
Because the Sun is one piece of furniture in a twelve room house. Their Jupiter is somewhere else in nine cases out of ten, their Moon runs their inner life, and their rising sign shapes how they come across. A full chart settles it and a Sun sign never will.
