Leo and Sagittarius compatibility is one of the most searched fire sign matches. Most pages give it a high score and move on. We asked a different set of questions. How many US couples are Leo and Sagittarius at all? Did real marriages favor them? And what did the old books say about these two signs in particular?
The first answer is about 1 random US couple in 70. The second is no: in 10.3 million British marriages, the pair sat within a fifth of a percent of chance. The third answer is the one that sets this pair apart. The planet that rules Leo is the Sun. The planet that rules Sagittarius is Jupiter. In the oldest rule book we have, the Sun and Jupiter are also the two lords of the whole fire group, one by day and one by night. No other pair of fire signs has that.
This guide shows how we got each answer, so you can check it. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.
The short answer, in six lines
| Question | What we found. |
|---|---|
| How common is a Leo and Sagittarius couple? | About 1 random US couple in 70, or 1.42 percent. |
| What would an even split of signs give? | 1 couple in 72, or 1.39 percent. |
| Did real marriages favor the pair? | No: a fifth of a percent over chance, well inside the noise. |
| How far apart are the signs? | Four signs, or 120 degrees, a link called a trine. |
| Who rules the two signs? | The Sun rules Leo and Jupiter rules Sagittarius. |
| What makes that rare? | The same two planets rule the whole fire group in Ptolemy. |
How many couples are Leo and Sagittarius?
Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Leo season runs from about July 22 to August 22. Sagittarius season runs from about November 22 to December 21. The exact hour moves a little each year. Our zodiac signs guide checks each date against the real sky.
The twelve signs are not the same size in births. Two things set the count. The first is how long the Sun stays in the sign. The second is how many babies are born per day at that time of year.
Leo wins on both. The Sun stays about 31.3 days in Leo, since Earth moves slowest in early July. It stays only about 29.6 days in Sagittarius, since Earth moves fastest in early January. US births peak in late summer, right in Leo season. By late fall the daily count has dropped, and the holidays lower it more.
| Source of the births | Share born Leo | Share born Sagittarius | Chance a random couple is Leo and Sagittarius. |
|---|---|---|---|
| US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million, by exact date | 8.96 percent | 7.95 percent | 1.42 percent, or 1 in 70. |
| If all twelve signs were equal | 8.33 percent | 8.33 percent | 1.39 percent, or 1 in 72. |
Why multiply by two? A couple can be a Leo woman with a Sagittarius man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Leo share times the Sagittarius share.
Leo is the most common Sun sign in US births. Sagittarius is the third rarest, ahead of only Capricorn and Aquarius. The two effects nearly cancel. The pair lands a hair above the even rate, in 22nd place out of 78 possible pairs. That place comes from the calendar and the birth rate, not from the stars.
How the three fire pairs compare
Fire has three signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Each pair of them is a trine. Here is how common each pair is in US births.
| Fire pair | Share of random US couples | One couple in. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries and Leo | 1.46 percent | About 69. |
| Leo and Sagittarius | 1.42 percent | About 70. |
| Aries and Sagittarius | 1.30 percent | About 77. |
So Leo and Sagittarius sit in the middle. Leo lifts the count and Sagittarius pulls it down.
What ten million marriages showed
A birth count tells you how common the pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. For that, the best test we know is a British one.
In 2007, the sociologist David Voas, then at the University of Manchester, looked at the married couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a plain thing. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict? Do others marry less?
His answer was no. The one clear excess was couples of the same sign. He traced it to form errors, such as one birthday typed in for both partners. Once he took those out, the table matched chance. His paper is titled “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer ran a version of it in March 2008.
We pulled the Leo and Sagittarius cells from his cleaned table, Table 7. The expected count is what you would get if people chose partners with no regard to sign.
| Couples in the 2001 census, cleaned | Found | Expected by chance | Gap. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leo wife, Sagittarius husband | 61,110 couples | 61,107 couples | 3 couples over. |
| Sagittarius wife, Leo husband | 61,340 couples | 61,113 couples | 227 couples over. |
| Both ways together | 122,450 couples | 122,220 couples | 0.19 percent over. |
Is that small surplus a sign of fate? Voas gives the scale. With 9.5 million couples spread over 144 cells, a cell can drift by up to 450 couples by chance alone. Both Leo and Sagittarius cells stay well inside that band. One of them is off by three couples out of sixty thousand. The honest reading is simple. Leos and Sagittarians marry each other at the rate the calendar sets, no more and no less.
A trine: four signs apart
Count from Leo to Sagittarius and you pass Virgo, Libra and Scorpio. That makes four signs, or 120 degrees. Astrologers call this link a trine, from the Latin word for three. Three trines close a triangle around the circle.
Ptolemy, the Greek writer of the second century, set out the rules in his book, the Tetrabiblos. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition the reverse. He also groups the twelve signs into four triangles. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius form the first one. Later writers call these triangles the elements, and this one is fire.
Is every Leo and Sagittarius pair a true trine?
By sign, yes. By degree, no. A Leo Sun at 0 degrees and a Sagittarius Sun at 29 degrees sit 149 degrees apart. A Leo Sun at 29 degrees and a Sagittarius Sun at 0 degrees sit 91 degrees apart. The trine is exact at 120 degrees, right in the middle.
Modern astrologers allow a margin, called an orb, around the exact angle. Across our sign pairs, the shares are the same each time. About 19 percent of pairs fall within 3 degrees of the exact angle. About 36 percent fall within 6 degrees. About 46 percent fall within 8 degrees, and about 56 percent within 10 degrees. So a bit under half of Leo and Sagittarius couples have Suns in a true trine at the usual orb. The rest share the sign link, not the degree link.
Why Jupiter got Sagittarius
This is where the pair stands out. Ptolemy explains why each planet rules the signs it rules. His answer puts Leo at the center of the plan.
He starts with the two lights. Cancer and Leo are the signs nearest the top of the sky for a Greek reader, and so the warmest. He gives Leo to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon. Then he hands out the other signs in order, one pair for each planet.
Saturn, the cold and far planet, gets the two signs opposite the lights: Capricorn and Aquarius. Jupiter, the mild planet just below Saturn, gets the next two: Sagittarius and Pisces. Ptolemy gives the reason in plain words. These signs stand in a trine to the lights, and a trine is “a harmonious and beneficent configuration.” The note by his translator, F. E. Robbins, spells it out. Sagittarius is in a trine to Leo, the Sun’s house.
So in Ptolemy’s scheme, Sagittarius went to Jupiter because it looks at Leo with a friendly angle. Few sign pairs have their link written into the very reason one of them has its ruler. Mars shows the contrast. Ptolemy gives Mars the signs that stand in a square to the lights, which he calls inharmonious. Scorpio squares Leo, and Aries squares Cancer.
The day lord and the night lord of fire
The second part of the story comes a few pages later. Ptolemy gives each of the four triangles to two planets. One rules it by day and one by night. Astrologers call these the triplicity rulers.
For fire, he writes this. The triangle holds the houses of the Sun, Mars and Jupiter. It went to the Sun and Jupiter, “since Mars is not of the solar sect.” The Sun rules it by day, and Jupiter by night. A sect is a team. The day team is led by the Sun, with Jupiter and Saturn on its side. The night team is led by the Moon, with Venus and Mars.
Put the two rules side by side and you see the point.
| Fire pair | Rulers of the two signs | Are both rulers lords of fire? |
|---|---|---|
| Aries and Leo | Mars and the Sun | No, Mars is left out. |
| Aries and Sagittarius | Mars and Jupiter | No, Mars is left out. |
| Leo and Sagittarius | The Sun and Jupiter | Yes, both of them. |
Leo and Sagittarius is the only fire pair ruled by the two lords of fire. Both rulers are also on the same team, the day team. In the old books, that means the two rulers work on the same shift and share the same aims.
Later writers mostly keep this plan. Dorotheus and Vettius Valens add a third, helping ruler to each triangle. For fire, that helper is Saturn. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, lists the Sun by day and Jupiter by night for fire. The Hellenistic scholar Chris Brennan walks through these tables in his book on the tradition.
Every Leo has its ruler at home; few Sagittarians do
A planet is said to be at home when it sits in the sign it rules. For a Leo, that is automatic. The Sun rules Leo, and a Leo is by definition born with the Sun in Leo. Our Leo sign guide puts it simply: Leo is the one sign whose ruler is always home.
For a Sagittarius, it is rare. Jupiter takes about twelve years to go round the sky. It sits in Sagittarius for about one year in twelve. Our Sagittarius sign guide measured the share over whole Jupiter cycles: about 10.22 percent of Sagittarians have Jupiter in their own sign.
So the pair is lopsided in one plain way. The Leo partner always carries a ruler at full strength. The Sagittarius partner does so only about one time in ten. For the other nine, it helps to know where Jupiter was at birth. A birth chart will show it.
Does Leo command Sagittarius?
Ptolemy has one more label that touches this pair. He calls some signs “commanding” and others “obeying.” He says the two signs of such a pair sit the same distance from an equinox sign. He also says they rise in equal time. Signs on the summer side command, because there the Sun makes the day longer than the night.
Robbins lists the pairs in his note. The list counts whole signs from Aries and Libra, and it reads: Taurus and Pisces, Gemini and Aquarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Sagittarius, Virgo and Scorpio. By this reading, Leo commands and Sagittarius obeys.
Gemini commands Aquarius by the same list, and our page on Gemini and Aquarius compatibility tests it against real rising times.
We tested Ptolemy’s own reason. Do Leo and Sagittarius take the same time to rise? A sign rises when it crosses the eastern horizon. We worked out the rising time for each sign at four US latitudes.
| City | Time for Leo to rise | Time for Sagittarius to rise. |
|---|---|---|
| Miami | 138 minutes | 136 minutes. |
| Los Angeles | 145 minutes | 139 minutes. |
| New York | 153 minutes | 142 minutes. |
| Seattle | 163 minutes | 147 minutes. |
They do not match. The gap grows as you go north. The signs that rise in truly equal time mirror each other across the equinox point, degree by degree. Leo pairs with Scorpio that way, as our page on Leo and Scorpio compatibility shows. Sagittarius pairs with Cancer.
So there are two readings. Count whole signs, as Robbins and the Roman poet Manilius do, and Leo commands Sagittarius. Take Ptolemy’s reason, equal rising time, and the tie goes to other signs. Either way, it is a label for the sky. It is not a rule for who leads at home.
One more old label does not apply. Ptolemy says some signs “behold” each other, because the Sun makes days of the same length in both. Leo pairs with Gemini on that list, and Sagittarius with Aquarius. Leo and Sagittarius do not behold each other.
Our page on Sagittarius and Aquarius compatibility shows why that pair is the rarest one without Capricorn.
What the pair means as a symbol
With the numbers set out, here is what astrologers read into the pair. Treat it as a way to talk, not a rule.
Both signs are fire. In the old texts, fire is hot and dry. Stephen Arroyo, in his book on the four elements, links fire to spirit, drive and a need to act on belief. Liz Greene links fire to hunches and to a sense of what could be. Both partners, on this reading, move toward life rather than wait for it.
The two signs differ in mode. Leo is a fixed sign, one that falls in the middle of a season. Fixed signs are read as steady and loyal, and slow to change course. Sagittarius is a mutable sign, one that falls at the end of a season. Mutable signs are read as flexible, restless and keen to move on.
The rulers add a layer. The Sun is the center: it stands for the self, pride and the wish to be seen. Jupiter is growth: it stands for faith, travel, teaching and wide views. Robert Hand calls Jupiter the planet of expansion. In Ptolemy’s plan, Jupiter’s sign was chosen for its good angle to the Sun’s sign. Astrologers read that as a ruler who lends room and hope to a partner who wants to shine.
The same symbols name the friction points. A fixed sign can want a steady base while a mutable one wants the next road. A Sun ruler can want the spotlight while a Jupiter ruler wants the big picture. These are themes to talk about, not verdicts on a couple.
Look past the Sun signs
A Sun sign is one point in a chart. The Moon, Venus and Mars signs add a lot about daily life and love. Your Moon sign, the sign the Moon was in at birth, speaks to moods and needs. We cover Leo and Sagittarius as Moon signs in a separate guide. Venus, the planet of love and taste, has its own page on Leo and Sagittarius Venus placements.
For this pair, one more planet is worth a look: Jupiter. It rules Sagittarius and shares the rule of fire with the Sun. Where Jupiter sits in each chart, by sign and by house, is part of the story the Sun signs leave out.
How we measured
You can redo every number on this page.
For birth shares, we used US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security file compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. We checked the pattern against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003. We placed each birth day on the sky using the real hour the Sun enters each sign, in US Central time. A day on the cusp was split by the share of hours on each side. The pair chance is two times the Leo share times the Sagittarius share. The rank compares all 78 pairs, the same sign pairs included.
The marriage counts come from Table 7 of the Voas paper, his cleaned version of census table C0792. Rows are wives and columns are husbands. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total.
Rising times use two routes. Route one uses the standard formula for the rising arc of each sign, with an Earth tilt of 23.44 degrees. Route two sweeps the sidereal clock in two million steps and counts how long each sign sits on the eastern horizon. The two routes agree to the tenth of a minute. The quotes from Ptolemy come from the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 18, in the Robbins translation, with his notes 80, 83 and 89.
The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date, and many couples meet across borders. The US figures are a close guide, not a census of couples.
Questions people ask
Are Leo and Sagittarius compatible?
No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Leo and Sagittarius couples within 0.2 percent of chance. As a symbol, the pair joins two fire signs in a trine, ruled by the Sun and Jupiter.
What percentage of couples are Leo and Sagittarius?
About 1.42 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 70, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. That ranks 22nd of 78 sign pairs. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.
Why is Leo and Sagittarius special among fire pairs?
Ptolemy gave the fire triangle to the Sun by day and Jupiter by night. The Sun rules Leo and Jupiter rules Sagittarius. So this is the only fire pair whose two rulers are both lords of fire.
Is every Leo and Sagittarius pair a true trine?
By sign, yes. By degree, no. The two Suns can sit from 91 to 149 degrees apart. With an 8 degree orb, about 46 percent of pairs have a true trine.
Does Leo command Sagittarius?
In the whole sign list from Robbins’s notes to Ptolemy, yes. But Ptolemy’s own test, equal rising time, fails for this pair. In New York, Leo takes about 153 minutes to rise and Sagittarius about 142.
