Leo and Scorpio Compatibility: Only 1 Pair in 3 Is a True Square

Leo and Scorpio compatibility draws a lot of searches, and most pages answer with a score out of ten. We asked two plainer questions first. How many couples are Leo and Scorpio at all? And when the books call this pair a square, how many of them have a real square in the sky?

The first answer is about 1 random US couple in 68. The second one surprised us. With the usual margin of 6 degrees, only about 36 percent of Leo and Scorpio pairs have Suns in a true square. The rest sit too far off, and about 1 pair in 25 is closer to a sextile or a trine.

This guide shows how we got both numbers, so you can check them. It adds the largest real test of love signs ever run, and what Ptolemy and William Lilly wrote about these two signs. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

The short answer, in six lines

QuestionWhat we found.
How common is a Leo and Scorpio couple?About 1 random US couple in 68, or 1.47 percent.
What would an even split of signs give?1 couple in 72, or 1.39 percent.
Did real marriages favor or avoid the pair?Neither: about half a percent under chance, well inside the noise.
How far apart are the signs?Three signs, or 90 degrees, a link called a square.
How many pairs have a true square?About 36 percent with a 6 degree margin.
What tie did Ptolemy’s rule give them?Leo and Scorpio take the same time to rise.

How many couples are Leo and Scorpio?

Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Leo season runs from about July 22 to August 22. Scorpio season runs from about October 23 to November 21. The exact hour moves a little each year, which is why our zodiac signs guide checks each date against the real sky.

The twelve signs are not the same size in births. Two things decide the count. The first is the length of each season. The second is how many babies are born per day in that part of the year.

Leo wins on both. The Sun spends 31.292 days in Leo, near the long end of the list. It spends only 29.899 days in Scorpio, fourth from the short end. US births peak in late summer, right in Leo season. By late fall the daily count has dropped again.

Source of the birthsShare born LeoShare born ScorpioChance a random couple is Leo and Scorpio.
US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million, by exact date8.96 percent8.18 percent1.47 percent, or 1 in 68.
US births 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million, by exact date8.96 percent8.11 percent1.45 percent, or 1 in 69.
If all twelve signs were equal8.33 percent8.33 percent1.39 percent, or 1 in 72.

Why multiply by two? A couple can be a Leo woman with a Scorpio man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Leo share times the Scorpio share.

Leo is the most common Sun sign in US births. Scorpio sits in the middle, just under an even twelfth. The pair lands a touch above the even rate. That gap comes from the calendar and the birth rate, not from the stars.

What ten million marriages showed

A birth count tells you how common the pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. For that, the best test we know is a British one.

In 2007, the sociologist David Voas, then at the University of Manchester, looked at every married couple in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a simple thing. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict, and do others marry less?

His answer was no. The one clear excess was couples of the same sign. He traced it to form errors, such as one birthday typed in for both partners. Once he took those out, the table matched chance. His paper is titled “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer ran a version of it in March 2008.

We pulled the Leo and Scorpio cells from his tables. The expected count is what you get if people pick partners with no regard to sign.

Couples in the 2001 censusFoundExpected by chanceGap.
Leo husband, Scorpio wife, raw count64,310 couples64,982 couples1.0 percent fewer.
Scorpio husband, Leo wife, raw count64,637 couples64,885 couples0.4 percent fewer.
Both ways, after his fixes119,399 couples120,039 couples0.5 percent fewer.

So Leo and Scorpio marry a hair less than chance. Is that a sign effect? Voas says no, for the whole table. With 9.5 million couples spread over 144 cells, a cell can drift up to about 450 couples by chance alone. The Leo husband with Scorpio wife cell sits about 500 under. A few cells out of 144 will always land past the line. The largest gap in the whole table was barely 1 percent.

The fair reading is simple. Leo and Scorpio do not seek each other out, and they do not avoid each other either. What astrology can offer this pair is a set of symbols, a way to talk about two styles of strength. The rest of this guide uses it that way.

Three signs apart: how real is the square?

Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count forward from Leo: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio. That is three steps. Three signs of 30 degrees make 90 degrees, a quarter of the circle. Astrologers call this link a square.

Not every square rises at the same pace, and our page on Virgo and Sagittarius compatibility times one that rises almost like a trine.

Here is the catch. The square in sign books is a square between whole signs. A real aspect, in a chart, is an angle between two points. Most astrologers count it only when the angle is close to exact. The leeway is called the orb. A common orb for a square is 6 to 8 degrees.

A Leo Sun can sit anywhere from 0 to 30 degrees of Leo. The same goes for a Scorpio Sun. So the true angle between two such Suns runs from 60 degrees to 120 degrees. A Leo born on the last day of Leo and a Scorpio born on the first day of Scorpio are only 61 degrees apart. In degrees, that is a sextile, not a square.

So we measured it. We took the Sun’s place for every half hour of Leo and Scorpio season, weighted by real US births. Then we paired every Leo with every Scorpio.

Orb, or leeway, you allowShare of Leo and Scorpio pairs with a true square.
Within 1 degree6.6 percent, about 1 pair in 15.
Within 3 degrees19 percent, about 1 pair in 5.
Within 6 degrees36 percent, about 1 pair in 3.
Within 8 degrees46 percent, just under half.
Within 10 degrees55 percent, just over half.

At the other end, about 2 percent of pairs sit within 6 degrees of a sextile. Another 2 percent sit within 6 degrees of a trine, the 120 degree link. That is 1 pair in 25 whose Suns form a soft link in degrees, though the signs form a square.

This matches what we found for Virgo and Scorpio as a Sun sign pair, where only 36 percent had a true sextile. The share is almost the same for any two signs three apart or two apart. It comes from the shape of the problem, not from these two signs.

A quick test for your own pair

You can check your own couple in a minute. Look up the degree of each Sun. Any free chart site shows it. Then take the Scorpio degree, subtract the Leo degree, and add 90.

Leo SunScorpio SunTrue angle, and what it is.
10 degrees Leo12 degrees Scorpio92 degrees, a close square.
3 degrees Leo25 degrees Scorpio112 degrees, closer to a trine than to a square.
27 degrees Leo4 degrees Scorpio67 degrees, near a sextile.

There is a rule of thumb too. The Sun moves about one degree a day. So a square is close when both partners were born about the same number of days into their sign. A Leo born early in Leo and a Scorpio born early in Scorpio make a tight square. An early Leo with a late Scorpio does not.

Two fixed signs, fire and water

The old books sort each sign three ways. Here is how Leo and Scorpio line up.

Fixed is the one thing they share. The fixed signs fall in the middle of each season. Leo is high summer and Scorpio is deep fall. The old books read them as signs that hold a course once it is set. Two fixed signs in a square is the classic picture of a standoff: two people who both mean it.

Ptolemy explains why a square counts as a hard link. In his scheme, the signs switch between masculine and feminine all the way round. Signs three apart always have opposite genders. So he calls the square out of tune. The trine and sextile join signs of the same kind, and he calls those in tune.

What Ptolemy and Lilly said about Leo and Scorpio

The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. It is one of the first full textbooks of Western astrology. In Book 1, chapters 13 to 16, he lists the ways two signs can be linked. Many web pages get these wrong, so we read them in the Robbins translation.

Two of his links count here. Signs that “command and obey” are the same distance from the spring or fall equinox. His reason is that they take the same time to rise. Signs that “behold” each other are the same distance from a solstice. His reason is that their days are the same length.

Do Leo and Scorpio “see” each other?

No, not in Ptolemy’s sense. Behold pairs have days of the same length. A Leo day in New York runs close to 14 hours. A Scorpio day runs close to 10. The notes in the Robbins edition list the behold pairs, and Leo goes with Gemini, while Scorpio goes with Pisces. So the claim that Leo and Scorpio “see each other” does not hold up.

Do they rise in the same time?

Yes, and this is the real tie. We worked out how long each sign takes to cross the eastern horizon. In New York, Leo takes about 153 minutes and so does Scorpio. At the equator, both take about 120 minutes. The match holds at every latitude.

SignTime to rise in New YorkTime to rise at the equator.
LeoAbout 153 minutesAbout 120 minutes.
ScorpioAbout 153 minutesAbout 120 minutes.
SagittariusAbout 143 minutesAbout 129 minutes.

The reason is a mirror. Leo and Scorpio sit the same distance from the fall equinox point, one on each side. Our Leo sign guide found the same thing from the other end. It counts Leo rising in about 9.8 percent of charts, second only to Scorpio.

Taurus and Aquarius share the same kind of mirror across the spring equinox, a tie traced in our page on Taurus and Aquarius compatibility.

There is a twist. The Robbins notes pair whole signs, and list Leo with Sagittarius as the command pair. Take Ptolemy’s own reason, equal rising times, and the match for Leo is Scorpio instead. The table shows it. So Leo and Scorpio share the clock Ptolemy cared about, even if his editors paired the signs another way.

William Lilly kept the idea in Christian Astrology, in 1647. He lists Leo among the signs that command and Scorpio among those that obey. He times Leo on the rising line in London at 2 hours and 48 minutes, a long sign. Lilly also names the mirror point. He calls it the contrantiscion, and he says it works “of the nature of a Square or Opposition.” His own worked case takes Saturn at 20 degrees 35 minutes of Leo and puts its contrantiscion at 9 degrees 25 minutes of Scorpio.

So in the old texts, Leo and Scorpio are tied twice, and both ties carry tension. They form a square by sign. They also mirror each other across the fall equinox, and Lilly reads that mirror like a square too. Command and obey is a label for the sky, not a rule for who leads at home.

The rulers: the Sun and Mars

In the old books, each sign has a planet that rules it, as a host rules a home. The Sun rules Leo. Mars rules Scorpio, and Aries too. Modern writers add Pluto to Scorpio after 1930, but most readings still start from Mars.

One sign back, our page on Libra and Scorpio compatibility sets Mars beside Venus, each weak in the other’s sign.

Here the two signs are far apart. Every Leo has the Sun in Leo, so every Leo has its ruler at home. For Scorpio, the share is only 14.21 percent, over the years 1600 to 2400. Our Scorpio sign guide gives the full count. Most Scorpios have Mars in some other sign, and that sign colors how their drive shows.

There is one bridge. Mars rules Aries, a fire sign that shares an element with Leo. So the Scorpio ruler already holds a key to the fire family. In a full reading, astrologers look at where each partner’s ruler sits. If the Scorpio partner’s Mars falls in a fire sign, the old books would see a real bond with Leo.

What the square looks like in daily life

These are sign portraits, not facts about any person you know. They describe two styles, drawn from the sign books.

Leo, as a fixed fire sign, likes warmth that shows. Praise out loud. Plans with a clear lead. Loyalty that is stated, then kept. Leo wants to be seen, and wants the partner to be proud of it.

Scorpio, as a fixed water sign, likes warmth that runs deep. Trust earned slowly. Feelings kept close until it is safe. Loyalty that is proved, not said. Scorpio wants to know the partner, all the way down.

Both are loyal, and both hold on. That is the strength of the pair. Once they commit, neither one drifts. The same trait makes a fight hard to end. Neither sign likes to give ground first.

Where it snagsWhat Leo feelsWhat Scorpio feelsA small step that helps.
PraiseUnseen when thanks stays privatePut on show when thanks is publicAgree on one public thank you and one private one each week.
PrivacyShut out by a closed doorExposed when news is shared too soonDecide together what stays inside the house.
TrustHurt when testedUnsafe until testedSay what proof would help, out loud, once.
ConflictStung in its prideStung in its trustTake a set break, then come back at a set time.

None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with strong wills can use them. That is the honest point: the sign gives a name to a pattern, and the fix lives in plain talk.

Fixed signs hold their ground, and a square between two of them brings the standoff to matters of pride. Identity is one layer and emotional reflex another, and the Moon-sign comparison of Leo and Scorpio works the pair at that second layer.

The rest of the chart counts for more

A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Astrologers who compare two charts, a method called synastry, look at all of them. Three matter most for love.

The Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. The Venus sign shows what they find lovely and how they show care. Mars shows how they chase what they want and how they argue. For this pair, Mars counts twice, since it rules Scorpio.

Reading the same two signs through Venus changes what looked like a strength, as Leo and Scorpio Venus placements shows. In that setup, signs three apart move at one tempo toward two goals.

Voas saw this reply coming. He answers that the Sun sign is the part of astrology most people use. Any real effect, however small, would still show up in ten million couples. If you know both birth dates and times, the full chart is where the detail lives. If you only know the Sun signs, treat this page as a starting map, not the ground.

How we measured

You can redo every number on this page.

For birth shares, we used US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security file compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. We checked them against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003. We placed each birth day on the sky using the real hour the Sun enters each sign, in US Central time. A day on the cusp was split by the share of hours on each side.

For the square, route one used the astronomy-engine code. It placed the Sun every 30 minutes of each Leo and Scorpio day from 2000 to 2014. Each slot got the births of that day, split evenly over the day. We paired every Leo slot with every Scorpio slot and summed the shares by angle. Route two used different code, the solar formula from Jean Meeus. It placed the Sun every 3 hours from 1600 to 2400, with no birth weights. Both routes gave the same shares to within 0.2 points. A plain formula that treats every degree as equal gives the same too: 1 minus the square of 24 over 30 is 36 percent.

The marriage counts come from Tables 1 and 7 of the Voas paper, which reproduce census table C0694. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total.

Rising times use the standard spherical formula with an Earth tilt of 23.44 degrees. The New York line uses latitude 40.7 degrees north. The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date, and many couples meet across borders. The US figures are a close guide, not a census of couples.

Questions people ask

Are Leo and Scorpio compatible?

No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Leo and Scorpio couples within half a percent of chance. As a symbol, the pair joins two fixed signs in a square: loyal, strong willed, and slow to back down.

What percentage of couples are Leo and Scorpio?

About 1.47 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 68, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.

Is every Leo and Scorpio pair a square?

By sign, yes. By degree, no. With a 6 degree orb, only about 36 percent of pairs have Suns in a true square. About 1 pair in 25 is closer to a sextile or a trine.

Do Leo and Scorpio rise in the same time?

Yes. They mirror each other across the fall equinox point, so they take the same time to cross the horizon at any latitude, about 153 minutes in New York. That is the reason Ptolemy gives for his command and obey pairs.

What should a Leo and Scorpio couple compare next?

The Moon, Venus and Mars signs of both partners. Mars matters twice here, since it rules Scorpio in the old books.
