Virgo and Scorpio Compatibility: Only 1 Pair in 3 Has a True Sextile

Virgo and Scorpio compatibility is one of the most searched sign pairs in the US, and the usual answer is a list of traits. This page does something else. I counted real US births to see how many Virgo and Scorpio pairs chance produces. I measured the angle between their Suns. And I went back to the old texts to see what they really claim about this pair. The short version: the two signs sit two signs apart, which astrologers call a sextile. But only about one Virgo and Scorpio pair in three has Suns close enough to form that angle for real.

Start with what no one can promise

Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Sun sign predicts whether a couple will last. The largest test I know of was run by David Voas, a researcher at the University of Manchester, in 2007. He took the 2001 census of England and Wales and looked at the birth dates of 10.3 million married couples. He found no sign pair that married more than chance would allow. He found no pair that stayed married longer either.

So this page does not rate the match. It treats the pairing as a way of reading two people, a lens, not a forecast. The lens can still be useful. It gives two partners words for how each one works. It points to places where they can talk past each other. But the stars do not decide the outcome. The two people do.

Voas’s result has one more use here. If signs do not steer who marries whom, then a Virgo meets a Scorpio at the rate set by birth counts alone. That rate can be measured, so I measured it.

The odds that a Virgo and a Scorpio meet in the US

A sign is not one twelfth of the year, and it is not one twelfth of births. The Sun spends about 30.9 days in Virgo and about 29.9 days in Scorpio, a figure our Scorpio sign page sets out from the real ingress times. US births are not flat through the year either. They peak in late summer and early fall.

I took two public files of daily US births. The first holds Social Security counts for 2000 to 2014, about 62.2 million births. The second holds counts from the National Center for Health Statistics for 1994 to 2003, about 39.7 million births. For each day, I found the exact moment the Sun changed sign, in New York time. When the change fell inside a day, I split that day’s births by the hours on each side.

QuestionSocial Security file, 2000 to 2014Health Statistics file, 1994 to 2003
Share of US births with the Sun in Virgo.8.94 percent.8.89 percent.
Share of US births with the Sun in Scorpio.8.18 percent.8.11 percent.
Rank of Virgo among the twelve signs.Second, just behind Leo.Second, just behind Leo.
Rank of Scorpio among the twelve signs.Seventh of twelve.Seventh of twelve.
Chance that two people drawn at random are one Virgo and one Scorpio.1.46 percent, or 1 pair in 68.1.44 percent, or 1 pair in 69.

If all signs were equal, the pair would turn up once in 72 draws. Virgo lifts the odds. Its share of births beats its share of the calendar by about 5.6 percent, because it falls right in the US birth peak. Scorpio does not get that boost. Its share of births, 8.18 percent, matches its share of the year almost to the decimal.

Only one other sign matches that closely, and our page on how Gemini and Scorpio are born at the same pace sets it out.

What does 1 in 68 mean in real life? Put 68 random couples in a room. About one of them will be a Virgo with a Scorpio, in one order or the other. That is not rare, and it is not common. It is close to what chance gives any pair of signs.

Two signs apart: the sextile, and the share of pairs that truly have it

Count along the zodiac from Virgo. Libra is one step on. Scorpio is two steps on. Two signs apart means 60 degrees on the circle, and astrologers call that angle a sextile. They read it as a soft link. The two sides do not merge, but they help each other.

Here is the catch. A sign is a slice 30 degrees wide. A Virgo born on the first day of Virgo and a Scorpio born on the last day of Scorpio have Suns about 90 degrees apart. A late Virgo and an early Scorpio can be only about 30 degrees apart. The label says 60, but the real gap runs anywhere from 30 to 90 degrees.

Most astrologers only count an aspect when the angle is close to exact. The leeway is called the orb. A common modern allowance for a sextile is about 6 degrees. So I asked a plain question: for a Virgo and a Scorpio picked at random from US births, what share of pairs have Suns within a given orb of 60 degrees?

Orb allowed around 60 degreesShare of Virgo and Scorpio pairs with a true sextile
Within 3 degrees.19 percent of pairs.
Within 6 degrees.36 percent of pairs.
Within 8 degrees.46 percent of pairs.
Within 10 degrees.56 percent of pairs.

With the common 6 degree orb, about one pair in three has a real Sun sextile. The other two pairs share the label, not the angle. About one pair in eight has Suns closer than 45 degrees. About one pair in eight has them wider than 75 degrees.

This matters for how you read your own match. If you want to use the sextile, look up both birth dates and find the real Sun degrees. A Virgo born on September 20 and a Scorpio born on October 25 have Suns only about 35 degrees apart. That is no sextile at all. A Virgo born on August 30 and a Scorpio born on October 29 sit close to 60 degrees apart. That pair has the angle the books describe.

What the old books say about this pair

The oldest full source is the Tetrabiblos, written by Ptolemy in Alexandria around 150 AD. I read it in the Robbins English version of 1940. Ptolemy sorts the signs in several ways, and Virgo and Scorpio meet in three of them.

Same gender, so a friendly angle

Ptolemy splits the signs into masculine and feminine, one after the other around the circle. Virgo and Scorpio are both feminine. He says the sextile and the trine are in harmony because they join signs of the same kind. The square and the opposition clash because they join signs of opposite kinds. So the friendly reading of this pair is old. It rests on a rule about gender, not on a study of couples.

One sign commands, the other obeys

In his chapter on commanding and obeying signs, Ptolemy pairs signs that sit the same distance from an equinox sign. The Robbins notes list the pairs. Virgo and Scorpio are one of them, Virgo on the side that commands and Scorpio on the side that obeys. Ptolemy gives a reason: such pairs rise in equal time and sit on equal circles of the sky.

Taurus and Pisces are the other sextile on the list, as our page on Taurus and Pisces compatibility shows.

I checked that reason. At the latitude of New York, Virgo takes about 151 minutes to cross the eastern horizon, and Scorpio about 153 minutes. That is close. At the equator the gap grows to 111 minutes against 119 minutes. The pairs that rise in exactly equal time are Virgo with Libra, and Leo with Scorpio. So Ptolemy’s label for this pair holds only roughly. Keep that in mind before you read command and obey as a rule for who leads.

Virgo and Libra, the pair that rises in exactly equal time, is the subject of our page on Virgo and Libra compatibility.

Earth and water share two rulers

Each element has planets that govern it. Ptolemy gives the earth signs to Venus by day and the Moon by night. He gives the water signs to Mars, with Venus by day and the Moon by night as partners. So Venus and the Moon rule in both elements. That is a real link between Virgo and Scorpio in the old system. It is also why this page sends you to look at both partners’ Venus and Moon, not only the Sun.

Mercury meets Mars

Each sign has a ruling planet. Virgo belongs to Mercury, the planet of thought and speech. Ptolemy makes Virgo both a home of Mercury and the sign where Mercury is exalted, a place of honor. Scorpio belongs to Mars, the planet of drive and defense. William Lilly still gives Scorpio to Mars in Christian Astrology in 1647. Modern astrologers added Pluto as a second ruler after 1930.

So in the old reading, this pair is a talk between a mind and a will. Mercury names, sorts and checks. Mars wants, guards and acts. Neither is better. They just move at different speeds and aim at different things.

The rulers do not sit in the same place for each sign, and that is a number our sign pages have measured. On our Virgo sign page, Mercury is in Virgo for 49.50 percent of Virgo Suns, over the years 1600 to 2400. Mars is in Scorpio for only 14.21 percent of Scorpio Suns, on the same window. So about half of Virgos carry their ruler at home. Only about one Scorpio in seven does. Most Scorpios have Mars in some other sign, and that sign will color how the drive shows up.

That is one more reason to read the full chart. A Scorpio with Mars in Virgo, for one, shares a lot of ground with a Virgo partner that the Sun signs alone do not show.

How the pair can play out day to day

Here the language turns from counts to tradition. What follows is how astrologers read the two signs. It is a set of images to test against your own life, not a set of facts.

What each partner brings

Virgo is a mutable earth sign. Earth means the concrete, the body and daily work. Mutable means it adapts and adjusts. A Virgo partner shows care through acts: a fixed tap, a plan, a meal ready on time. They notice what is off and want to fix it.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign. Water means feeling. Fixed means it holds on and does not bend fast. A Scorpio partner shows care through loyalty and depth. They keep their inner life private until trust is earned. Once it is earned, they commit in full.

Where they meet

Both signs like privacy. Both prefer a few close bonds to a wide social scene. Both take their commitments with weight. Virgo brings structure to Scorpio’s strong feelings. Scorpio brings depth to Virgo’s plans. In astrology books, this is the classic earth and water blend: water gives earth life, and earth gives water a shape.

Where they rub

Speed and style differ. Virgo wants to name a problem and solve it. Scorpio wants to feel a problem through before any fix. When Virgo offers a quick fix, Scorpio can hear a lack of care. When Scorpio goes quiet, Virgo can read it as a test with no clear rules.

Control is the other sore spot. Virgo controls details to feel safe. Scorpio guards feelings to feel safe. If both grip at once, the home can feel tense. A Virgo’s helpful notes can land as blame. A Scorpio’s need for time can look like a secret.

What helps, in the words of the tradition

The sextile is read as an open door, not a given. It asks for effort from both sides. In plain terms, that means a few simple habits:

  • Say the feeling first, then talk about the fix.
  • Give notes as a wish, not a verdict.
  • Agree on how much time alone each person needs.
  • Keep short check-ins so small things do not pile up.
  • Build something together, a project or a routine, that uses both skills.

These habits are not astrology. They are what helps most couples. The signs only give a name to the pattern.

Look past the Sun

A Sun sign is one point in a chart with ten planets and twelve houses. To read two people well, astrologers compare whole charts. That method is called synastry, and it looks at how each planet in one chart meets each planet in the other.

Three placements matter most for love in the traditional view. The Moon shows needs and moods. Venus shows what someone finds lovely and how they give affection. Mars shows desire and how someone pushes for what they want. Our page on Virgo and Scorpio Venus placements covers the same pair through Venus, where the mood is about pleasure rather than purpose.

Keep one fact from above in mind. Venus and the Moon govern both earth and water in Ptolemy’s scheme. So when you compare charts, those two planets are the natural next step after the Sun. The guide to the 12 zodiac signs has the real Sun dates for each sign, which you need to place a birth right near a sign change.

How I measured this

You can redo each number on this page.

For the Sun sign shares, I used two daily birth files published by FiveThirtyEight. One comes from the Social Security Administration and covers 2000 to 2014. The other comes from the National Center for Health Statistics and covers 1994 to 2003. I found each Sun sign change with astronomy-engine, an open source sky library, in the tropical zodiac. I spread each day’s births evenly over its 24 hours in New York time. When the Sun changed sign that day, I split the births by the hours before and after. Using Los Angeles time instead changes the Virgo and Scorpio pair rate by less than one part in ten thousand.

For the pair rate, I assumed partners’ birth dates are not linked, which is what Voas found. The chance of one Virgo and one Scorpio is then two times the Virgo share times the Scorpio share.

For the sextile, I took the Sun’s position at each hour of the Social Security years, weighted by births. I built the spread of Virgo Sun degrees and Scorpio Sun degrees, and combined them to get the spread of the gap. As a check, a simple formula that treats degrees as flat gives the same shares to within 0.1 point: 19, 36, 46 and 56 percent.

For rising times, I used the standard formula for the time a sign takes to cross the horizon at a given latitude. I then checked it a second way, by turning the sky in tiny steps and counting how long each sign stays on the eastern horizon. Both ways gave the same minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Are Virgo and Scorpio compatible?

Astrology reads the pair as a friendly one. The signs sit 60 degrees apart, both are feminine in Ptolemy’s scheme, and they share Venus and the Moon as element rulers. No study has shown that this or any sign pair lasts longer, so treat it as a lens, not a forecast.

How common is a Virgo and Scorpio couple?

In US birth data, about 1 random pair in 68 is one Virgo and one Scorpio. Virgo is the second most common Sun sign in the US, and Scorpio ranks seventh.

Is every Virgo and Scorpio pair a sextile?

By sign, yes. By degree, no. With a 6 degree orb, only about 36 percent of pairs have Suns in a real sextile. The rest range from about 30 to 90 degrees apart.

Who leads in a Virgo and Scorpio pair?

Ptolemy calls Virgo the commanding sign and Scorpio the obeying one. His reason, equal rising times, holds only roughly when measured. It describes a sky pattern, not who should lead a home.

What should a Virgo and Scorpio couple look at next?

Compare both Moons and both Venus signs. In the old scheme, Venus and the Moon rule both earth and water, so they are the natural link between these two signs.
