Gemini and Scorpio compatibility starts with a gap you can count. The two signs sit five signs apart, an angle of 150 degrees. The old books link them by no ruler, no element and no aspect. Yet in one plain way, these two signs are twins.
We counted US births by exact date. In Gemini season and in Scorpio season, babies arrive at almost exactly the year’s average pace per day. No other signs come as close, in two separate birth files. So why are there more Gemini people than Scorpio people? The answer is the Sun’s speed, and nothing else.
This guide shows each step, so you can check it. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.
The short answer, in six lines
| Question | What we found. |
|---|---|
| How common is a Gemini and Scorpio couple? | About 1 random US couple in 71, or 1.40 percent. |
| Where does it rank among the 78 pairs? | 31st, just above an even split. |
| How fast are babies born in each season? | Both within 0.2 percent of the yearly average per day. |
| Why are there more Gemini people? | The Sun spends 1.43 more days in Gemini. |
| Did real marriages favor the pair? | By 0.15 percent, which is chance. |
| What angle do the signs make? | A quincunx of 150 degrees, which Ptolemy calls disjunct. |
How many US couples are Gemini and Scorpio?
Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Gemini season runs from about May 21 to June 20. Scorpio season runs from about October 23 to November 21. The exact hour shifts a little each year. Our guide to the 12 zodiac signs checks each border against the real sky.
The twelve signs are not the same size in births. Here are the two shares that matter here, from 62.2 million US births by exact date.
| Sign | Share of US births, 2000 to 2014 | Rank among the twelve signs. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo | 8.96 percent | First. |
| Gemini | 8.56 percent | Fourth. |
| Scorpio | 8.18 percent | Seventh. |
| Capricorn | 7.63 percent | Last. |
| If all signs were equal | 8.33 percent | No rank. |
A couple can be a Gemini woman with a Scorpio man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Gemini share times the Scorpio share. That gives 1.40 percent, or about 1 random US couple in 71. If all signs were equal, it would be 1 in 72.
There are 78 ways to pair the twelve signs. Gemini and Scorpio come 31st. The top of the list is made of summer pairs, led by Leo and Virgo at 1 in 62. This pair sits in the middle, a hair above an even split.
None of this comes from the stars. It comes from the calendar and from when US babies are born. A common pair is not a better pair. It is a pair you are more likely to meet.
Two seasons born at the same pace
Two things set the size of a sign in births. The first is how long the Sun stays in it. The second is how many babies are born on each of those days. We split the two apart for all twelve signs.
The pace of births is simple to state. Take the births in a sign’s season, and divide by the days in that season. Then compare the result with the average day of the whole year. Here is what the 2000 to 2014 file gives.
| Sign | Births per day, against the yearly average. |
|---|---|
| Virgo | 5.6 percent above. |
| Leo | 4.6 percent above. |
| Cancer | 2.7 percent above. |
| Libra | 2.4 percent above. |
| Scorpio | Level with it, within 0.03 percent. |
| Gemini | 0.2 percent below. |
| Sagittarius | 1.7 percent below. |
| Pisces | 1.9 percent below. |
| Aquarius | 2.1 percent below. |
| Taurus | 2.2 percent below. |
| Aries | 2.3 percent below. |
| Capricorn | 5.4 percent below. |
Gemini and Scorpio are the only two signs within 1 percent of the average. Every other sign is at least 1.7 percent off. We checked a second, older file from the National Center for Health Statistics, for 1994 to 2003. Gemini came out 0.1 percent above the average and Scorpio 0.9 percent below. Once again, they were the only two signs inside 1 percent.
In the 2000 to 2014 file, an average day brought about 11,350 US births. A Gemini day brought about 11,330. A Scorpio day brought about 11,350. For a birth count, that is a tie.
Why both seasons land on the average
US births follow a yearly wave. They are low in winter and spring. They climb through June, peak in September, and fall back in October and November. The wave crosses the yearly average twice. Gemini and Scorpio each sit on one of those two crossings.
| Month | Births per day, against the yearly average. |
|---|---|
| May | 1.6 percent below. |
| June | 1.1 percent above. |
| September | 5.7 percent above, the peak. |
| October | 0.5 percent above. |
| November | 1.9 percent below. |
Gemini takes the last eleven days of May and most of June. The low days and the high days cancel out. Scorpio takes the last nine days of October and most of November. Again the high and low days cancel out. One season sits on the way up, and one on the way down. The result is the same pace.
Our page on Virgo and Scorpio compatibility made a related point. There, Scorpio’s share of births matched its share of the year almost to the decimal. Here we add the other half. Gemini matches too, and no third sign does.
So why are there more Gemini people?
If both seasons bring the same births per day, the gap must come from the number of days. And it does. The Earth moves on an oval path. It is farthest from the Sun in early July, and it moves slowest there. From here, the Sun seems to crawl through the early summer signs.
We timed each Sun sign from 2000 to 2014, the years of the birth file. The Sun spent 31.33 days in Gemini, on average. It spent 29.90 days in Scorpio. That is 1.43 days more for Gemini. Put another way, the Sun moves about 0.96 degrees a day in Gemini, and about 1.00 degree a day in Scorpio.
| What we compared | Gemini | Scorpio. |
|---|---|---|
| Days the Sun spends in the sign | 31.33 days | 29.90 days. |
| Rank for length, of twelve | Second longest | Fourth shortest. |
| Births per day against the average | 0.2 percent below | Level with it. |
| US births in a typical year, 2000 to 2014 | About 355,000 people | About 339,000 people. |
Now do the sum. There are about 15,700 more Gemini births than Scorpio births each year. The 1.43 extra days, at 11,350 births a day, come to about 16,200. So the extra days explain the whole gap, and a little more. The birth pace explains none of it.
That is rare. For most pairs, both causes pull at once. Leo is big because the Sun is slow there and because summer births are high. Capricorn is small for the two reasons in reverse. Gemini and Scorpio are the clean case. Here the orbit of the Earth does all the work.
Our page on the Gemini sign lists the length of every season. Our page on the Scorpio sign shows why the printed start date of Scorpio fails in many years. Both use the site’s reference window, 1600 to 2400, and land within a hundredth of a day of our figures.
What ten million marriages showed
A birth count tells you how common a pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. For that, the best test we know is a British one.
In 2007, the sociologist David Voas looked at every married couple in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a plain question. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict?
His answer was no. The one clear excess was couples of the same sign. He traced it to form errors, such as one birthday typed in for both partners. Once he took those out, no sign pair stood out. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” was summed up in the Skeptical Inquirer in March 2008.
We ran the Gemini and Scorpio cells ourselves, from his corrected Table 7. The census held 126,888 Gemini and Scorpio couples. Chance alone would give about 126,700. The gap is 188 couples, or 0.15 percent. That is noise. Real marriages neither sought this pair nor avoided it.
A gap of five signs: the quincunx
Count from Gemini to Scorpio and you pass five signs. That makes an angle of 150 degrees. Modern astrologers call it a quincunx, from the Latin for five twelfths. Some call it an inconjunct, which means not joined.
Ptolemy used only four angles, which he called aspects. They were the sextile at 60 degrees, the square at 90, the trine at 120 and the opposition at 180. The quincunx is not one of them. In the Tetrabiblos, book one, he calls signs one or five signs apart disjunct and alien. He says a gap of five signs cuts the circle into unequal parts.
Ptolemy had two other ways to link signs. Some pairs command and obey, since they rise in equal time. Other pairs behold each other, since their days are the same length. Two readings exist. The translator Robbins lists them by whole sign. William Lilly and others read them degree by degree. Gemini and Scorpio fall in neither list, under either reading. By Ptolemy’s rules, this pair is disjunct all the way. Lilly also kept a looser label. He calls all six signs from Aries to Virgo commanding, and all six from Libra to Pisces obeying. On that label, Gemini commands and Scorpio obeys. But so does every pair that spans the two halves.
Gemini has one other quincunx, with Capricorn. That pair gets a small rescue. By degree, Gemini and Capricorn rise in equal time. Our page on Gemini and Capricorn compatibility covers it. Scorpio gets no such rescue from Gemini.
A sign-to-sign gap is not always a real angle in degrees. Take two Suns at random, one in each sign. Only about 1 couple in 5 is within 3 degrees of an exact 150. About 1 in 3 is within 6 degrees. The rest are five signs apart, but not at the true angle. A full chart tells you which case you are in.
Whole-sign houses add one more view. In that system, each sign of a chart is one house. From Gemini, Scorpio is the sixth sign. From Scorpio, Gemini is the eighth. The Hellenistic writers, such as Vettius Valens, counted the sixth and the eighth among the hard places. They tied the sixth to toil and illness, and the eighth to death and inheritance.
Mercury and Mars share nothing here
Each sign has a ruler, a planet said to own it. Mercury rules Gemini. Mars rules Scorpio in the old system. Modern astrologers add Pluto as a second ruler. The two old rulers have nothing in common in these signs.
Ptolemy also grouped the signs by element into four triangles. Each triangle has its own rulers. The air triangle, with Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, goes to Saturn by day and Mercury by night. Ptolemy says it has “no relation to Mars.” The water triangle, with Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, goes to Mars, with Venus and the Moon as helpers. So the two triangles share no ruler at all.
There is one more rank in the old books. A planet is exalted in one sign, where it is said to be honored. Ptolemy gives no exaltation to Gemini and none to Scorpio. Scorpio is the Moon’s fall, the sign where the Moon is weakest. Gemini holds no fall at all.
| Old rank | Gemini | Scorpio. |
|---|---|---|
| Ruler of the sign | Mercury | Mars. |
| Rulers of the element | Saturn by day, Mercury by night | Mars, with Venus and the Moon. |
| Planet exalted there | None in Ptolemy | None in Ptolemy. |
| Planet in fall there | None | The Moon. |
| Element and mode | Air, mutable | Water, fixed. |
The two inner planets cannot bridge the gap either. Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. Venus never strays more than about 47. So a Gemini has Mercury in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. A Scorpio has it in Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. The two lists never meet. The same holds for Venus. A Gemini and a Scorpio can never share a Mercury sign or a Venus sign.
What each partner brings, as symbols
With the counts set out, here is the symbol. These are the meanings the tradition gives each sign. Any real person will fit some and not others.
Gemini brings range and talk. Mercury rules words, trade and quick links between ideas. A Gemini partner names things, asks why, and moves on. The sign is mutable, which means it sits at the end of a season and bends to change. Air is the element of thought and contact.
Scorpio brings depth and hold. Mars rules drive and defense. A Scorpio partner guards what is private and stays with a thing to the end. The sign is fixed, which means it sits in the middle of a season and keeps its shape. Water is the element of feeling and memory.
Modern writers such as Stephen Arroyo and Liz Greene read air as the mind and water as the heart. On that view, this pair is the mind meeting the heart with no shared rule book. One talks to find out what it feels. The other feels first and speaks later, or not at all.
The quincunx gives a word for that. It is an angle of adjustment, not of clash. A square pushes two signs into a fight. A quincunx asks two signs to translate. Neither is the right way to love. They just start from different places.
Where a real chart says more
A Sun sign is one point in a chart of ten planets and twelve houses. Two people with these Suns can still share a lot elsewhere. Their Moons can be in the same sign. Their Mars can be in trine. One person’s rising sign can sit on the other’s Sun.
Venus is the planet most read for love. As shown above, a Gemini and a Scorpio never share a Venus sign. But their two Venus signs can still form a helpful angle. Our page on Gemini and Scorpio Venus placements looks at that side of the pair.
Astrologers compare two charts point by point. The method is called synastry. It looks at every angle between one person’s planets and the other’s. If you know only the Sun signs, treat this page as a starting map.
How we measured
You can redo every number on this page.
Birth shares. We used US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security file compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. We checked them against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003. Each birth day was placed on the sky with the real hour the Sun enters each sign, in US Central time. The chance for two different signs is two times the product of their shares. The older file gives 1 in 72 for this pair.
Births per day. For each sign, we divided its share of births by its share of the calendar time in the same years. A value of one means the average pace. We did this for both files.
Days in each sign. Route one used the Sun’s entry times stored with the birth data. Route two found each entry again with the astronomy-engine code, by halving the time step fifty times. Both gave 31.33 days for Gemini and 29.90 days for Scorpio over 2000 to 2014. Over the long window from 1600 to 2400, route two gave the same two values.
Marriages. The census counts come from Table 7 of the Voas paper, built from census table C0792. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total. The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date. The figures are a close guide, not a census of couples.
Questions people ask
Are Gemini and Scorpio compatible?
No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Gemini and Scorpio couples within 0.15 percent of chance. As a symbol, the pair is air meeting water, with no shared ruler.
How common is a Gemini and Scorpio couple?
About 1 random US couple in 71, or 1.40 percent, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. That ranks 31st of all 78 sign pairs. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.
Why are there more Gemini people than Scorpio people?
Because the Sun spends 1.43 more days in Gemini. Births per day are the same in both seasons, within 0.2 percent of the yearly average. So the extra days explain the whole gap.
What aspect do Gemini and Scorpio form?
They are five signs apart, 150 degrees. Modern astrologers call it a quincunx or inconjunct. Ptolemy counts no aspect there and calls such signs disjunct.
Can a Gemini and a Scorpio share a Venus sign?
No. Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun. A Gemini has Venus between Aries and Leo. A Scorpio has it between Virgo and Capricorn. The same is true of Mercury.
