Gemini Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility is a study in distance. The two signs sit five places apart, an angle astrologers call a quincunx. Ptolemy gave them no bond of any kind. And their birthdays fall in two windows of the year that meet in late August but never overlap. No couple of this kind can share a Sun sign.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this couple. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a way to talk about love. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
A guest of Mercury and an exile in the house of Mars
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in at your birth. Astrologers read it as your style of affection: what you find lovely, and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A domicile is a sign the planet rules, its home. The detriment, or exile, is the sign across from it. The exaltation and the fall form a second pair. With no rank at all, a planet is peregrine, which means a guest.

Ptolemy explains the houses in Book I of the Tetrabiblos. The Sun and the Moon take Leo and Cancer. Each planet then takes one sign on each side, in the order of their spheres. Mercury takes Gemini and Virgo. Venus takes Taurus and Libra. Mars takes Aries and Scorpio. So Scorpio faces Taurus, a house of Venus, across the wheel. The word detriment came later, from authors such as William Lilly.
Exile is not the whole story. In chapter 18, Ptolemy sorts the signs into four triangles of three. He gives the water triangle, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, to Mars, with Venus sharing it by day and the Moon by night. So in a day chart, even an exiled Venus keeps a share in the sign’s triangle.

Signs Ptolemy called alien
Ptolemy listed four ways two signs can be linked. The first is an aspect: a sextile, square, trine or opposition, in chapter 13. The second is command and obedience, in chapter 14. The third is beholding, in chapter 15, for signs where the Sun makes days of equal length. Chapter 16 names the leftovers. Signs with none of these ties are, in the Robbins translation, disjunct and alien. Later authors call this aversion: the signs cannot see each other.
Gemini and Scorpio fail every test. They sit five signs apart, which is not one of the old aspects. By whole signs, as in the notes of Frank Robbins, Gemini commands Aquarius and beholds Leo, while Scorpio obeys Virgo and beholds Pisces. Lilly read these ties by exact degree, using mirror points called antiscia and contra-antiscia. No couple has its two Venuses on mirror points either. So both readings agree.
It is alien in this strict sense on both readings. It is also the only quincunx that joins a mutable air sign and a fixed water sign.
Modern astrologers do read the quincunx, the angle of 150 degrees. They see it as a link that needs steady small fixes, like two gears of different sizes. Ptolemy did not list it. Both views are honest readings of the same gap.
How common this couple is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. Seen from Earth, it speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for about six weeks. Astrologers call this retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Scorpio is the second rarest Venus sign. Only Capricorn is rarer. Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Scorpio? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the shares. The result is 1.37 percent, about one couple in 73. That ranks 42nd of the 78 Venus pairs, and eighth of the twelve quincunx pairs.
Birthday windows that meet end to end
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. The widest gap we found is 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign comes with only five Sun signs. The tables give the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

The two lists share no sign. The Gemini list stops at Leo. The Scorpio list starts at Virgo. So the partners in this couple never share a Sun sign.
Put that on a calendar. Gemini Venus people are born between about March 20 and August 22. Scorpio Venus people are born between about August 23 and January 19. The two windows touch in late August and do not overlap. Nobody born between about January 20 and March 19 can belong to this couple at all. Those are the months of Aquarius and Pisces.
The Suns that pair up instead
What does the typical couple look like? The likeliest mix is a Cancer Sun with the Gemini Venus and a Libra Sun with the Scorpio Venus. That covers 8.90 percent of these couples. Next come Taurus with Libra, at 8.64 percent, and Cancer with Sagittarius, at 8.51 percent. No single mix reaches one couple in eleven. Treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.

More than one couple in three repeats the quincunx in its Suns. Yet one in four has its Suns in an easy trine, such as Cancer with Scorpio. An aspect by Venus says little about the aspect by Sun.
A Gemini Sun and a Scorpio Sun are another couple
Many readers are a Gemini Sun and a Scorpio Sun. That rarely makes them this Venus pair. Among Gemini Venus people, 24.02 percent have a Gemini Sun. Among Scorpio Venus people, 23.48 percent have a Scorpio Sun. Across all signs, Venus shares the sign of the Sun in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So for a Gemini Sun and a Scorpio Sun, a Venus in each partner’s own Sun sign fits roughly one couple in 18. The Sun layer has its own page, Gemini and Scorpio as Sun signs, with other figures.
Turn it around. In 41.86 percent of Gemini Venus and Scorpio Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 26th of the 78 pairs. In 5.64 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. When Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
The quincunx in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses five signs apart can sit anywhere from 120 to 180 degrees apart. The exact quincunx is 150. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to count how many couples come close.

These values barely change from one Venus pair to the next. The edges tell more. At an 8 degree orb, 7.12 percent of these couples form a major aspect by degree. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Gemini and at 0 degrees Scorpio. The gap is 121 degrees, a trine in the sky. Now picture Venus at 0 degrees Gemini and 29 degrees Scorpio. The gap is 179 degrees, an opposition. So a few of these “alien” couples do see each other, once you count by degree.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how astrologers read the pair.
- Light and deep. The Gemini Venus keeps love light and moving. The Scorpio Venus wants it private and total.
- Words and silence. Gemini shows care by talking. Scorpio shows care by keeping a secret safe.
- Many friends, one bond. Gemini likes a wide circle. Scorpio watches who stands close.
- The sore spot. A casual joke can land as a breach of trust. A long silence can feel like a locked door.
A plain habit helps. Let the Scorpio partner say one feeling out loud each week, in plain words. Let the Gemini partner keep one topic just between the two of them. Each then learns a little of the other’s language.
In the old view, a planet in exile acts in a way foreign to its nature. Read that way, the Scorpio Venus loves with Mars’s intensity. The Gemini Venus loves with Mercury’s wit. Neither follows Venus’s own rules. That gives them one odd thing in common.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So “alien” is a label from a book, not a verdict on a couple. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every moment Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That makes more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Calendar dates are rounded, since the Sun changes sign a day earlier or later in some years. All values use the tropical zodiac. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.
