Gemini Venus and Libra Venus compatibility looks easy on paper. The two signs form an air trine, the smoothest angle in the old books. Venus is at home in Libra and a guest in Gemini. But one number stands out when you count the Sun signs behind them. These partners share a Sun sign in fewer than one couple in 100, and only in Leo.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this couple. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a way to talk about love. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Venus at home, Venus as a guest
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in at your birth. Astrologers read it as your style of affection: what you find lovely, and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A domicile is a sign the planet rules, its home. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The fall and the detriment are its weak seats. With none of these ranks, a planet is peregrine, which means a guest.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Owner of the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Venus | Peregrine, a guest with no major rank. | Mercury. |
| Libra Venus | Domicile, her own house. | Venus herself. |
Ptolemy explains the houses in Book I of the Tetrabiblos. The Sun and the Moon take Leo and Cancer. Each planet then takes one sign on each side, in the order of their spheres. Mercury takes Gemini and Virgo. Venus takes the next pair out, Taurus and Libra. So a Gemini Venus stays with Mercury. A Libra Venus sleeps in her own bed.
Libra holds one more rank. Ptolemy put the exaltation of Saturn there, and the fall of the Sun. His reason was the season. Libra opens autumn, when days grow short and cold, which suits Saturn and weakens the Sun. Venus rules the sign all the same.
A Gemini Venus loves through talk, play and fresh ideas. Our page on Venus in Gemini covers this placement in full. A Libra Venus loves through balance, grace and fair terms. Our page on Venus in Libra explains why she is at full strength there. One partner courts with questions. The other courts with good form.
An air trine, and the only one of its kind
Gemini and Libra sit four signs apart. That makes a trine, an angle of 120 degrees. In chapter 13, Ptolemy calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is that both signs are of the same kind. Here both are masculine, the old term for the fire and air signs.
Chapter 18 adds a second tie. Ptolemy sorts the twelve signs into four triangles of three. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius form the air triangle. He gave it to Saturn by day and to Mercury by night. So a night birth puts Mercury, the owner of Gemini, in charge of the whole triangle.
The two signs differ in pace. Libra is cardinal, the sign that opens autumn. Gemini is mutable, the sign that closes spring. Cardinal signs start things. Mutable signs adjust them. Among all 78 Venus pairs, this is the only air trine that joins a cardinal sign and a mutable one.
Ptolemy lists other bonds too. Some signs command and obey, in chapter 14. Some behold each other, in chapter 15. Gemini and Libra have neither. By whole signs, the beholding tie pairs Gemini with Leo and Libra with Aries. By exact degrees, as William Lilly read it in 1647, no couple has its two Venuses on mirror points. So both readings agree. The trine is the link.
How common this couple is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. Seen from Earth, it speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for about six weeks. Astrologers call this retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Gemini | 8.46 percent | Third of twelve. |
| Venus in Libra | 8.32 percent | Sixth of twelve. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Libra sits right on the even share. Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Libra? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the shares. The result is 1.41 percent, about one couple in 71. That ranks 19th of the 78 Venus pairs. Among the twelve pairs that form a trine, it ranks third.
The Sun signs behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. The widest gap we found is 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign comes with only five Sun signs. The tables give the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.
| Sun sign | Share of Gemini Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8.31 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Taurus | 29.06 percent | Venus one sign ahead. |
| Gemini | 24.02 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Cancer | 29.96 percent | The largest group. |
| Leo | 8.65 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
| Sun sign | Share of Libra Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo | 8.99 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Virgo | 30.08 percent | The largest group. |
| Libra | 23.52 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Scorpio | 28.37 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Sagittarius | 9.05 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
In calendar terms, Gemini Venus people are born between about March 20 and August 22. Libra Venus people are born between about July 23 and December 21. The two windows overlap for a single month, the month of Leo.
A shared Sun only in Leo
Look at the two lists. Only one Sun sign appears in both: Leo. For a Gemini Venus, a Leo Sun sits at the far edge of the range. For a Libra Venus, it sits at the other edge. So the two partners share a Sun sign only if both are Leo.
How rare is that? Multiply the two Leo shares, 8.65 percent and 8.99 percent. The result is 0.78 percent, about one couple in 129. In the other 128, the two Suns differ. The trine between the Venuses is common. A matching Sun behind it is not.
What does the typical couple look like instead? The likeliest mix is a Cancer Sun with the Gemini Venus and a Virgo Sun with the Libra Venus. That covers 9.01 percent of these couples. Next come Taurus with Virgo, at 8.74 percent, and Cancer with Scorpio, at 8.50 percent. No single mix reaches one couple in ten. Treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.
We also grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.
| Angle between the two Suns | Share of couples | What it means. |
|---|---|---|
| Trine | 25.17 percent | Suns in easy step, like the Venuses. |
| Quincunx | 23.85 percent | Five signs apart, with no classic aspect. |
| Square | 19.34 percent | A tense right angle. |
| Sextile | 13.21 percent | A friendly link, two signs apart. |
| Opposition | 12.37 percent | The Suns face each other. |
| Semi-sextile | 5.30 percent | Next-door signs. |
| Same sign | 0.78 percent | Both Suns in Leo. |
Only one couple in four has its Suns in a trine as well. For the rest, the easy Venus link sits on top of a different Sun story. Read both.
A Gemini Sun and a Libra Sun are another matter
Many readers are a Gemini Sun and a Libra Sun. That rarely makes them this Venus pair. Among Gemini Venus people, 24.02 percent have a Gemini Sun. Among Libra Venus people, 23.52 percent have a Libra Sun. Across all signs, Venus shares the sign of the Sun in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So for a Gemini Sun and a Libra Sun, a Venus in each partner’s own Sun sign fits roughly one couple in 18. The Sun layer has its own page, Gemini and Libra read through the Sun, with other figures.
Turn it around. In 41.89 percent of Gemini Venus and Libra Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 20th of the 78 pairs. In 5.65 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. When Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
The trine in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses four signs apart can sit anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees apart. The exact trine is 120. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to count how many couples come close.
| Orb | Couples with a true trine | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 19.00 percent | About one in five. |
| 6 degrees | 36.00 percent | Just over one in three. |
| 8 degrees | 46.21 percent | Just under half. |
| 10 degrees | 55.54 percent | Just over half. |
These values barely change from one Venus pair to the next. The edges tell more. At an 8 degree orb, 3.65 percent of these couples form a square by degree instead. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Gemini and at 0 degrees Libra. The gap is 91 degrees. By sign it is a trine. In the sky it is a square.
The other edge gives nothing. Venus at 0 degrees Gemini and 29 degrees Libra sit 149 degrees apart. That is a quincunx, which is not one of the major aspects. So a trine by sign slips into another major aspect about half as much as a square by sign does.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how astrologers read the pair.
- Easy talk. Both are air signs, so both show love through words, humor and good company.
- Fair and curious. The Libra Venus wants things to be fair and pleasant. The Gemini Venus wants them to be interesting.
- Start and shift. Libra opens a plan. Gemini keeps changing it. Both enjoy the process.
- The sore spot. Neither likes a hard talk. Each can wait for the other to raise it.
A simple habit helps. Once a week, let the Gemini partner ask one direct question and wait for the answer. Let the Libra partner give it plainly, even if it spoils the mood. Air signs keep the peace well. They need practice at a fair fight.
In the old view, a planet in its own house acts freely and a guest follows the host’s rules. Read that way, the Libra Venus sets the tone of the romance. The Gemini Venus brings the news and the jokes. Each has a clear role.
The same signs through other planets and pairs
The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Gemini Moon and Libra Moon compatibility reads these two signs through that layer. A Gemini Venus meets the third air sign in Gemini Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility. It meets a Mercury partner at a square in Gemini Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility. Next door, a fire sign waits in Gemini and Leo Venus placements.
A Libra Venus meets the other home of Venus in Taurus Venus and Libra Venus compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a trine is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we counted
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every moment Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That makes more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.
Frequently asked questions
Are Venus in Gemini and Venus in Libra compatible?
By sign they form an air trine, which Ptolemy called harmonious. Venus is at home in Libra and a guest in Gemini. At an 8 degree orb, 46.21 percent of these couples have a true trine. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Gemini Venus and Libra Venus couple?
About one couple in 71, or 1.41 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 19th of the 78 Venus pairs and third of the 12 trine pairs.
Can a Gemini Venus and a Libra Venus share a Sun sign?
Only if both partners have the Sun in Leo. That happens in about one couple in 129.
Is Venus strong in Libra?
Yes. Libra is one of her two houses, with Taurus. In Gemini she holds no major rank and is a guest of Mercury.
Which Sun signs are most likely in this couple?
A Cancer Sun with the Gemini Venus and a Virgo Sun with the Libra Venus, in 9.01 percent of these couples.
