Gemini and Libra Compatibility: Bookends of the US Birth Peak

Gemini and Libra compatibility is the classic air match. The two signs sit four signs apart, so they form a trine, the angle the old books call easy. Most pages stop there. We went to the US birth records instead, and found a plain fact that belongs to this pair alone.

The five most common Sun signs in the United States come in one unbroken run. It starts with Gemini and ends with Libra. Between the two lies the whole of summer, from the June solstice to the September equinox. Gemini and Libra are the two bookends of the US birth peak.

This page shows how we counted, so you can check each step. Then it gives what the old books say. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

How many US couples are Gemini and Libra?

Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Gemini season runs from about May 21 to June 20. Libra season runs from about September 22 to October 22. The exact hour shifts a little each year. Our guide to the 12 zodiac signs checks each border against the real sky.

The twelve signs are not the same size in births. Here are the shares that matter, from 62.2 million US births by exact date.

Source of the birthsShare born GeminiShare born LibraChance a random couple is Gemini and Libra.
US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million8.56 percent8.52 percent1.46 percent, or 1 in 69.
US births 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million8.59 percent8.51 percent1.46 percent, or 1 in 68.
If all twelve signs were equal8.33 percent8.33 percent1.39 percent, or 1 in 72.

Why multiply by two? A couple can be a Gemini woman with a Libra man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Gemini share times the Libra share.

There are 78 ways to pair the twelve signs. Gemini and Libra come 16th. No pair of air signs does better. Gemini and Aquarius make about 1 couple in 74. Libra and Aquarius make 1 in 74 too. Two Geminis make 1 in 136.

Among the 12 trines, this one comes third. Taurus and Virgo lead at about 1 in 68. Aries and Leo come a hair ahead of Gemini and Libra. At the other end, Taurus and Capricorn make only 1 in 79.

None of this comes from the stars. It comes from the calendar and from when US babies are born. A common pair is not a better pair. It is a pair you are more likely to meet.

The five busiest signs run from Gemini to Libra

Rank the twelve signs by their share of US births. The top five are Leo, Virgo, Cancer, Gemini and Libra. Now put them back in zodiac order. They form one unbroken run: Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra. Gemini opens the run and Libra closes it.

We checked this in a second, older file from the National Center for Health Statistics, for 1994 to 2003. It gives the same top five, in the same order. So the run is not a quirk of one set of years.

Sign, in zodiac orderShare of US birthsRank among the twelveDays the Sun spends there.
Gemini8.56 percentFourth31.33 days.
Cancer8.84 percentThird31.45 days.
Leo8.96 percentFirst place31.30 days.
Virgo8.94 percentSecond30.90 days.
Libra8.52 percentFifth30.39 days.

Add the five together. From the first day of Gemini to the last day of Libra, the Sun spends about 155.4 days. That is 42.5 percent of the year. Yet those days hold 43.8 percent of all US births. The rest of the year, from Scorpio round to Taurus, holds the other 56.2 percent.

So every Gemini and Libra couple is made of two people born at the edges of the busy half of the year. One is born as the peak begins. The other is born as it fades. Our page on Virgo and Capricorn compatibility looks at the very top of that peak, day by day.

All of summer lies between them

Count forward from Gemini to Libra. You pass three signs on the way: Cancer, Leo and Virgo. The Sun enters Cancer at the June solstice, the longest day of the year. It enters Libra at the September equinox, when day and night are about equal. So the three signs between this pair are the whole of northern summer, no more and no less.

Only four trines frame a full season this way. Pisces and Cancer hold spring between them. Virgo and Capricorn hold autumn. Sagittarius and Aries hold winter. Gemini and Libra hold summer, and summer is the longest of the four.

Why is summer the longest? The Earth’s path round the Sun is not a perfect circle. In early July, the Earth is at its farthest point from the Sun. There it moves at its slowest. So the Sun seems to crawl through Cancer, Leo and Virgo.

SeasonSigns it coversLength, 2000 to 2014 average.
SpringAries, Taurus, Gemini92.76 days.
SummerCancer, Leo, Virgo93.65 days, the longest.
AutumnLibra, Scorpio, Sagittarius89.84 days.
WinterCapricorn, Aquarius, Pisces89.00 days, the shortest.

Summer beats winter by about four and a half days. It held first place in every year we tested, from 1600 to 2400. It was 93.47 days long in 1600. It will be close to 93.79 days in 2399. The gap grows slowly, because the point where the Earth is farthest from the Sun drifts a little each century.

Here is what that means for a couple. Take a Gemini born with the Sun at 10 degrees of Gemini. Take a Libra born with the Sun at 10 degrees of Libra. On paper, they sit a third of the zodiac apart. On the calendar, they are born about 125 days apart, not the 122 days a third of the year would give. No other pair of signs has summer inside its trine.

Same share, two different reasons

Gemini and Libra end up with almost the same share of births: 8.56 and 8.52 percent. The two numbers look like twins. They are not built the same way.

Two things set the size of a sign in births. The first is how long the Sun stays in it. The second is how many babies are born on each of those days. We split the two apart.

SignDays the Sun spends thereBirths per day, against the year’s average.
Gemini31.33 days, a long stayAt the average, within 0.2 percent.
Libra30.39 days, a short stayAbout 2.4 percent above the average.

Gemini wins on time. The Sun lingers there as the Earth nears its far point. Libra wins on pace. Its babies are born at a brisk rate, just after the September peak. The two gains land on nearly the same number. The older file tells the same story: Gemini at the average pace, and Libra about 2.2 percent above it.

The busy pace of late summer has a plain cause. Count back nine months from September. You land in December, the month of year-end holidays. Nothing in the sky is needed to explain it.

What the trine means, and how exact it is

Count from Gemini to Libra and you move four signs. That makes an angle of 120 degrees. Astrologers call it a trine, from the Latin word for threefold. Ptolemy, in the second century, called the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason was simple. Both signs are of the same kind. Here, both are masculine signs in his terms, meaning active and daytime signs.

A trine by sign is not always a trine by degree. Two Suns can sit anywhere inside their 30-degree slices. A Gemini born at 1 degree and a Libra born at 29 degrees are still a Gemini and Libra couple. Yet their Suns stand 148 degrees apart, far from 120.

Astrologers allow a margin, called an orb, before they count an aspect as real. We have measured how many sign pairs fall inside a given orb. The answer is the same for every pair of signs four apart.

Orb allowedShare of Gemini and Libra couples with a true trine.
3 degreesAbout 19 percent.
6 degreesAbout 36 percent.
8 degreesAbout 46 percent.
10 degreesAbout 56 percent.

So with a common orb of 8 degrees, fewer than half of these couples have the trine in the strict sense. The rest share the element and the sign angle, but not the exact degree.

What Ptolemy and the old books say

Ptolemy grouped the twelve signs into four triangles, one per element. In his Tetrabiblos, the third triangle is drawn through Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. He calls it a triangle of three masculine signs. He gives it to Saturn by day and to Mercury by night. He adds that it has no relation to Mars.

He then places each sign of the triangle in the year. In his words, Gemini lies toward the summer tropic, and Libra toward the equinox. A tropic here means a solstice, a turning point of the Sun. So Ptolemy already saw this pair as the two doors of summer. Our count of days only puts numbers on his picture.

Point of traditionGeminiLibra.

ModeMutable, the end of a seasonCardinal, the start of a season.
Ruling planetMercuryVenus.
Planet exalted thereNone in PtolemySaturn.
Planet in fall thereNone in PtolemyThe Sun.

Two terms in that table need a word. A planet is exalted in a sign when the tradition says it is at its best there. It is in its fall in the opposite sign, where it is at its weakest. Ptolemy puts the Sun’s fall in Libra, since the days grow short from that point on. He gives Saturn its exaltation in Libra, as the Sun’s opposite in nature. Our page on the Libra sign looks at what the Sun’s fall means for Libra natives.

Note the link this makes. The two lords of the air triangle are Saturn and Mercury. Mercury rules Gemini. Saturn is exalted in Libra. So each sign of this pair hosts one of the two planets that run their shared element.

Ptolemy had two other ways to join signs. Some pairs command and obey, because they rise in equal times. Others behold each other, because their days have the same length. Gemini and Libra are in neither list, in any reading of his rules. Gemini beholds Leo. Libra beholds Aries. Under a looser label that William Lilly used, the six signs from Aries to Virgo command, and the six from Libra to Pisces obey. By that label, Gemini commands and Libra obeys. But that is true of any pair split across the two halves.

Whole sign houses give one more view. In this system, each sign of the chart is one house. Counted from Gemini, Libra is the fifth sign. Counted from Libra, Gemini is the ninth. Hellenistic writers such as Vettius Valens named the fifth place Good Fortune and the ninth place God. Both count among the good places of the chart.

What each sign stands for in the tradition

With the numbers set out, here is the symbol. These are the meanings the tradition gives each sign. A real person will match some of them and not others.

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, calls both signs hot, moist, daytime air signs. He also calls both of them human signs. Gemini is the sign of the twins, ruled by Mercury, the planet of speech, trade and quick thought. Modern writers link it to curiosity, talk and a taste for many threads at once. It closes spring, so the tradition reads it as a sign of change and of ends that open onto something new. Our page on the Gemini sign goes further.

Libra is the sign of the scales, ruled by Venus, the planet of pleasure, beauty and bonds. It opens autumn at the point where day and night weigh the same. So the tradition links it to balance, fair terms and partners. Modern writers stress its link to the other person, the one across the table.

Read as a symbol, the pair joins the planet of words to the planet of bonds, inside one element. One sign ends a season, the other begins one. Many writers read that as talk that leads to an agreement. It is a way of seeing, not a test result.

Did real marriages favor Gemini and Libra?

The largest test of love signs used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at the birthdays of 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. He first saw an excess of couples of the same sign. It came from errors in how birth dates were written down.

We checked this pair in his corrected table, Table 7. It held 135,215 Gemini and Libra couples. Chance alone predicts about 134,866. The gap is 0.26 percent, the size of noise in a table this large. The stars did not push these couples together, and they did not keep them apart.

Where a full chart says more

A Sun sign is one point in a chart of ten planets and twelve houses. Two people with these Suns can share a lot elsewhere. Their Moons can sit in one sign. Their Mars can form a trine. One person’s rising sign can fall on the other’s Sun.

Venus is the planet most read for love. It never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. So a Gemini has Venus somewhere from Aries to Leo. A Libra has Venus somewhere from Leo to Sagittarius. The two ranges touch in one sign only, Leo. So a Gemini and a Libra can share a Venus sign, but only a late Gemini and an early Libra, and only in Leo. Our page on Gemini and Libra Venus placements looks at that side of the pair.

Mercury stays within about 28 degrees of the Sun. A Gemini has Mercury in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. A Libra has it in Virgo, Libra or Scorpio. Those lists never meet. Gemini has a harder match on the far side of the wheel. Read our measured take on Gemini and Capricorn compatibility, where the two signs sit five signs apart, at a quincunx.

How we measured

Shares of births. We used US births for each date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security file compiled by FiveThirtyEight. We checked them against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003. Each birth date was placed in the sky with the real hour the Sun entered each sign, in US Central time. The chance for two different signs is two times the product of their shares.

Days in each sign and each season. We found each entry of the Sun into a sign with the astronomy-engine code, halving the time step fifty times. That gave 31.33 days for Gemini and 30.39 days for Libra, on 2000 to 2014, the years of the birth file. Over the site’s reference window, 1600 to 2400, those two round the same, and Leo’s 31.30 days becomes 31.29. For the seasons, we ran two routes. The first used the code’s own solstice and equinox tool. The second found the same moments from the Sun’s position, step by step. Both gave 93.65 days of summer on 2000 to 2014, and both gave 93.47 days in 1600 and 93.79 days in 2399.

Marriages. We read the Gemini and Libra cells of Table 7 in the Voas paper, both ways round. The expected count is each row total times each column total, divided by the grand total of 9.5 million couples in that table.

Frequently asked questions

Are Gemini and Libra compatible?

No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Gemini and Libra couples within 0.26 percent of chance. As a symbol, the pair is a trine inside the air group, joining Mercury and Venus.

How common is a Gemini and Libra couple?

About 1 random US couple in 69, or 1.46 percent, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. That ranks 16th of all 78 sign pairs, and first among pairs of air signs. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.

Why are Gemini and Libra both so common?

They are the two ends of the busiest run of signs in US births. The top five signs run from Gemini to Libra without a gap. Gemini is large because the Sun stays there 31.33 days. Libra is large because babies are born about 2.4 percent faster than average in its season.

What lies between Gemini and Libra on the zodiac?

Cancer, Leo and Virgo, which make up the whole of northern summer. That stretch lasts about 93.65 days, the longest season. So a Gemini and a Libra born at the same degree of their signs are born about 125 days apart.

Can a Gemini and a Libra share a Venus sign?

Yes, but only in Leo. Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun. A Gemini has Venus from Aries to Leo, and a Libra from Leo to Sagittarius. They can never share a Mercury sign.
