Virgo and Capricorn compatibility is a classic earth match. Both signs belong to the earth group, and they sit four signs apart on the wheel. Most pages stop there. We went to the birth records instead, and found a stranger link.
Virgo holds the busiest birthdays in the United States. Capricorn holds the quietest. We read 62.2 million US births, day by day. The busiest date of the year is September 12, in Virgo season. The three quietest dates are December 25, January 1 and December 24, all in Capricorn season. Christmas gets about half the births of September 12.
So this pair joins the two ends of the US birth calendar. As a couple, it lands close to the middle: about 1 random US couple in 73. This page shows how we counted, then what the old books say. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.
The short answer, in six lines
| Question | What we found. |
|---|---|
| How common is a Virgo and Capricorn couple? | About 1 random US couple in 73, or 1.36 percent. |
| Is that more or less than chance? | Just under an even split, which gives 1 in 72. |
| Which sign has the most births per day? | Virgo, about 5.6 percent above the yearly average. |
| Which sign has the fewest births per day? | Capricorn, about 5.4 percent below it. |
| Did real marriages favor the pair? | No. The count came within 54 couples of chance. |
| How far apart are the signs? | Four signs, or 120 degrees, a link called a trine. |
How many couples are Virgo and Capricorn?
Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Virgo season runs from about August 23 to September 22. Capricorn season runs from about December 22 to January 19. The edge days move a little each year, which is why our zodiac signs guide checks each date against the real sky.
The twelve signs are not the same size in births. Two things set the count. The first is how long the Sun stays in each sign. The second is how many babies are born per day in that part of the year. Virgo wins on both counts. Capricorn loses on both.
| Source of the births | Share born Virgo | Share born Capricorn | Chance a random couple is Virgo and Capricorn. |
|---|---|---|---|
| US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million, by exact date | 8.94 percent | 7.63 percent | 1.36 percent, or 1 in 73. |
| US births 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million, by exact date | 8.89 percent | 7.60 percent | 1.35 percent, or 1 in 74. |
| If all twelve signs were equal | 8.33 percent | 8.33 percent | 1.39 percent, or 1 in 72. |
Why multiply by two? A couple can be a Virgo woman with a Capricorn man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Virgo share times the Capricorn share.
There are 78 ways to pair the twelve signs. Virgo and Capricorn come 38th, right in the middle of the list. Virgo is the second most common Sun sign in US births. Capricorn is the least common. The surplus on one side and the shortfall on the other almost cancel out.
The earth group shows the spread well. Taurus and Virgo make about 1 couple in 68. Virgo and Capricorn make 1 in 73. Taurus and Capricorn make 1 in 79. Same element, same angle, yet a gap of about 17 percent from top to bottom. None of it comes from the stars. It comes from the calendar and from when US babies are born.
The busiest birthdays meet the quietest
Here is the fact at the heart of this page. We took the daily US birth counts for 2000 to 2014. For each date of the year, we took the average over the 15 years. Then we ranked the 365 dates and noted the Sun sign of each one.
| Rank of the date | Date | Births per day, on average | Sun sign on that date. |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st, the busiest | September 12 | About 12,740 births | Virgo. |
| 2nd | September 19 | About 12,700 births | Virgo. |
| 3rd | September 20 | About 12,540 births | Virgo. |
| 363rd | December 24 | About 8,030 births | Capricorn. |
| 364th | January 1 | About 7,740 births | Capricorn. |
| 365th, the quietest | December 25 | About 6,440 births | Capricorn. |
The pattern goes deeper than the top three. Six of the ten busiest dates fall in Virgo season. Five of the six quietest dates fall in Capricorn season. The one outsider near the bottom is July 4, the subject of our page on Cancer and Sagittarius compatibility.
The picture holds for whole seasons, not just single days. A day in Virgo season has about 11,990 births on average. A day in Capricorn season has about 10,740. The yearly average is about 11,350. So Virgo sits 5.6 percent above the average and Capricorn 5.4 percent below it. No sign is higher than Virgo, and no sign is lower than Capricorn.
We checked this with a second file, from the National Center for Health Statistics, for 1994 to 2003. The order is the same. Virgo is first, at 5.0 percent above average. Capricorn is last, at 5.6 percent below. The busiest dates are again in mid September, and the quietest is again Christmas.
Why Capricorn season is so quiet
A baby’s birthday is not left fully to nature. Many births are planned. A doctor sets a date for a C-section, or for starting labor with medicine. Those planned births avoid holidays, when fewer staff are on duty. So the count drops on the holiday and rises on the days around it.
Capricorn season holds the biggest holiday week of the US year. Christmas and New Year both fall inside it. We set each holiday beside the other full days of that year’s Capricorn season. From 2000 to 2014, Christmas had about 41 percent fewer births than a usual Capricorn day. New Year’s Day had about 29 percent fewer. Christmas was the quietest date of the whole year in 14 of those 15 years.
Watch where the missing births go. The busiest days of late December are December 19 and 20, just before the holiday. Those two dates rank fourth and sixth for the whole year. The Sun is still in Sagittarius then, so some births that would have been Capricorn become Sagittarius instead. After Christmas, December 27 to 30 fill up again. In 4 of the 15 years, one of those four dates was the busiest day of the entire year.
So how much of Capricorn’s shortfall comes from the holidays? We took out six dates: December 24, 25, 26 and 31, and January 1 and 2. Those six dates average about 8,710 births. The rest of Capricorn season averages about 11,260. Without the six dates, Capricorn sits less than 1 percent below the yearly average, instead of 5.4 percent. The holiday week does most of the work.
Why Virgo season is so busy
US births peak in late summer and early fall. The top weeks run through mid September. Count back 38 weeks, the usual time from conception to birth, and mid September points to the second half of December.
The busiest run of signs starts with Gemini and ends with Libra, as our page on Gemini and Libra compatibility shows.
That link to the winter holidays is the common reading among people who study birth dates. It is not proven for any one family, and other causes play a part, such as weather and work calendars. But the timing is plain in the data. The quiet week of Capricorn season and the busy weeks of Virgo season sit about nine months apart.
So the two signs meet twice on the calendar. Capricorn season is when births drop the most. On the usual count, it is near the time when many of the busiest Virgo birthdays begin.
117 Virgos for every 100 Capricorns
Put the two effects together. For every 100 Capricorns born in the US from 2000 to 2014, about 117 Virgos were born. The older file gives the same figure.
Part of that gap is the sky. The Earth moves fastest in early January, when it is closest to the Sun. So the Sun crosses Capricorn in about 29.4 days, the shortest stay of any sign. It spends about 30.9 days in Virgo. That alone gives Virgo about 5 percent more days, as our Virgo sign guide notes.
The rest is the birth rate. A Virgo day has about 12 percent more births than a Capricorn day. We split the gap between the two causes. About one third comes from the length of the seasons. About two thirds comes from births per day. Our Capricorn sign guide explains the short season in full.
A common pair is not a better pair. It is a pair you are more likely to meet. A Virgo in the US will meet more Leos and Virgos than Capricorns, for plain calendar reasons. That says nothing about how any couple gets on.
Four signs apart: the trine
Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count forward from Virgo: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn. That is four steps of 30 degrees, or 120 degrees. An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky that astrologers read as a link. The 120 degree angle is called a trine.
The trine is read as the easy aspect. The two signs share an element. The talk flows because both sides want the same kind of thing. For earth signs, that thing is what is real, useful and lasting.
A trine by sign is not always a trine by degree. A Virgo born early in the sign and a Capricorn born late sit much more than 120 degrees apart. Astrologers only count an aspect when the angle is close to exact. The leeway they allow is called the orb. Across all the sign pairs on this site, the result is the same. About 19 percent of couples sit within 3 degrees of the exact angle. About 36 percent sit within 6 degrees, 46 percent within 8, and 56 percent within 10.
So a true Sun trine is found in about half of Virgo and Capricorn couples, if you allow a wide orb. With a tight orb, it is closer to one in five. Only the birth dates settle it.
What Ptolemy wrote about this pair
The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. It is one of the first full textbooks of Western astrology. We read the parts on sign links in the Robbins translation, Book 1, chapters 13 to 19. Many web pages get these parts wrong, so we went to the source.
A harmonious aspect
In chapter 13, Ptolemy sorts the aspects in two groups. He calls the trine and the sextile “harmonious,” because they join “signs of the same kind.” The square and the opposition he calls “disharmonious.” Virgo and Capricorn are both feminine signs in his scheme, so their trine joins two of a kind.
The earth triangle
In chapter 18, he splits the zodiac into four triangles. A triangle here means three signs spaced four apart, the same group we now call an element. The second triangle is “drawn through Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.” He says it “is composed of three feminine signs.” He gives it to two rulers: “the moon governs it by night and Venus by day.”
He adds a detail worth noting. “Taurus lies toward the summer tropic, Virgo toward the equinox, and Capricorn toward the winter tropic.” So the earth triangle touches each season. Virgo closes the summer. Capricorn opens the winter.
Two exaltations, two falls
In chapter 19, Ptolemy lists the exaltations. An exaltation is a sign where a planet is said to act at its strongest, like an honored guest. Its opposite is the fall, where the planet is at its weakest.
| Sign | Ruler, or home planet | Exalted there | In fall there. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgo | Mercury | Mercury | Venus. |
| Capricorn | Saturn | Mars | Jupiter. |
Mercury is the one planet that both rules and is exalted in the same sign, and that sign is Virgo. Ptolemy says Mercury “is exalted, as it were, in Virgo,” because the planet is dry. He gives Mars its exaltation in Capricorn, where “he is farthest south.” In plain words, the old writers gave Virgo to the planet of skill and detail, and Capricorn to the planets of structure and drive.
One twist runs across the pair. Venus rules the earth triangle by day, yet Venus is in fall in Virgo. The day ruler of the group is weak in one of its own signs. Read it as a label for the sky. It says Virgo shows care through use and help more than through show.
What this pair is not
Ptolemy names two more ties between signs. Signs that “command and obey” sit the same distance from an equinox. Signs that “behold” each other sit the same distance from a solstice, so their days last the same length. Neither tie joins Virgo and Capricorn, whichever way you count.
He also names signs that are “disjunct,” or turned away from each other. Those are one sign apart, or five. Virgo and Capricorn are four apart. So in his terms, they see each other, and the link is a friendly one.
What ten million marriages show
If the trine made couples, you would see more of them. The largest test we know of was run by David Voas, a British researcher, in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, which held the birth dates of about 10.3 million married couples. The Skeptical Inquirer reported his result in March 2008.
His raw count showed too many couples with the same sign. He traced most of them to errors on the forms, such as one birthday written in for both spouses. He took out those errors and built a clean table, his Table 7.
We read the Virgo and Capricorn cells in that table. It holds 127,678 couples made of one Virgo and one Capricorn. Chance alone predicts 127,624. The gap is 54 couples, or 0.04 percent. Of the 66 mixed sign pairs, only three came closer to chance. The trine gave these couples no lift at all.
That fits Voas’s own verdict. Once the errors were gone, no pair strayed far from chance. The largest gap in the whole table was barely 1 percent. Our page on Leo and Capricorn compatibility reads the same table for another Capricorn pair.
What the symbols say, as a lens
With the numbers set aside, here is how astrologers read the two signs. This is a picture, not a forecast.
Virgo is a mutable earth sign. Mutable means it comes at the end of a season, when things shift and blend. Virgo closes the summer and gets the harvest in. Its ruler Mercury is the planet of skill, speech and fine detail. William Lilly, writing Christian Astrology in 1647, gave Virgo to careful work and service.
Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign. Cardinal means it opens a season. Capricorn opens the winter, when the days are shortest. Its ruler Saturn is the planet of time, rules and patience. Liz Greene has written at length on Saturn as the teacher who builds slowly.
Put them side by side, and the roles are clear. Capricorn sets the plan and the long view. Virgo checks the parts and makes them work. Both value what is useful over what is showy. Stephen Arroyo, in his book on the four elements, reads earth as the element of the senses and of practical life.
The picture has a soft spot too. Two earth signs can let the work crowd out the talk. A Virgo who fixes and a Capricorn who plans can both forget to say the warm thing out loud. The trine makes things easy, and easy can turn into quiet. Some couples like that quiet. Others need to add the words on purpose.
Beyond the Sun sign
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Astrologers who compare two charts, a method called synastry, look at all of them. Three matter most for love.
The Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. The Venus sign shows what they find lovely and how they show care. Mars shows how they chase what they want and how they argue. For this pair, Venus is worth a look, since it rules the earth triangle by day. Reading the same two signs through Venus changes the picture, as Virgo and Capricorn Venus placements shows.
Voas saw the reply that the Sun sign is too thin a test. He answers that the Sun sign is the part of astrology most people use. Any real effect, however small, would still show up in ten million couples. If you know both birth dates and times, the full chart is where the detail lives. If you only know the Sun signs, treat this page as a starting map, not the ground.
How we measured
You can redo every number on this page.
For birth shares, we used US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security file published by the site FiveThirtyEight. We checked them against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million births. We placed each birth day on the sky using the real minute the Sun enters each sign, in US Central time. A day on the cusp was split by the share of hours on each side. The chance for a pair of two signs is two times the product of their shares. This assumes that partners’ birth dates are not linked, which is what Voas found.
For the busiest and quietest dates, we averaged each calendar date over the 15 years and ranked all 365. We left out February 29. Each date takes the sign the Sun held for all or most of that day.
For births per day by sign, we divided the births of each sign by the days the Sun spent there. For the holidays, we set Christmas and New Year’s Day beside every other full day of the same Capricorn season, took the ratio for each year, then averaged it. We ran every step on both files. The two files agree on the order of the signs and on the top and bottom dates.
The marriage counts come from Table 7 of the Voas paper, built from census table C0792. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total. The Ptolemy quotes come from the Robbins translation of the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 19. The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date, and many couples form across borders. The US figures are a close guide, not a census of couples.
Questions people ask
Are Virgo and Capricorn compatible?
No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Virgo and Capricorn couples within 54 couples of chance. As a symbol, the pair joins two earth signs in a trine, which the old books call harmonious.
What percentage of couples are Virgo and Capricorn?
About 1.36 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 73, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. That ranks 38th of the 78 sign pairs. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.
Why are there more Virgos than Capricorns?
Two reasons. The Sun spends about 30.9 days in Virgo and only 29.4 in Capricorn. And a Virgo day has about 12 percent more US births than a Capricorn day, mostly because planned births avoid the Christmas and New Year week. In all, about 117 Virgos are born for every 100 Capricorns.
What aspect do Virgo and Capricorn form?
By sign, a trine of 120 degrees. By degree, the angle is within 6 degrees of exact in about 36 percent of couples, and within 10 degrees in about 56 percent. Ptolemy puts both signs in the earth triangle, ruled by Venus by day and the Moon by night.
What should a Virgo and Capricorn couple compare next?
The Moon, Venus and Mars signs of both partners. Start with Venus, since it rules the earth triangle by day and is in fall in Virgo.
