Cancer and Sagittarius Compatibility: The July 4 and Thanksgiving Pair

Cancer and Sagittarius compatibility gets a US twist that no other pair shares. Every Cancer season holds the Fourth of July. Every Sagittarius season holds Thanksgiving, or nearly all of it. One sign owns the summer cookout. The other owns the long trip home in late fall.

Those two days leave a mark in the birth count. We read 62.2 million US births, day by day. On July 4, about one baby in four that you would expect is missing. On Thanksgiving, about one in three is missing. Each holiday is the quietest birth date of its sign’s season.

A holiday can lift births too: our page on Gemini and Aquarius compatibility finds about 5 percent more babies on Valentine’s Day.

This page shows that count, then checks what the old books say about the pair. About one random US couple in 71 is a Cancer and a Sagittarius. Read all of it as a lens, not a forecast.

First, what no one can promise

Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Sun sign predicts whether a couple will last. The biggest test we know of was run by David Voas, a British sociologist, in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales. It held the birth dates of about 10.3 million married couples.

His raw count showed too many couples with the same sign. He traced most of them to errors on the forms. Some forms had one birthday typed in for both spouses. He removed those errors and built a clean table, his Table 7.

We read the Cancer and Sagittarius cells in that table. Cancer wives with Sagittarius husbands came to 62,806 couples. Chance alone predicts 62,863. Sagittarius wives with Cancer husbands came to 62,745. Chance predicts 63,028. Add the two, and the pair sits 340 couples below chance, out of about 125,500. That is 0.27 percent.

Voas notes that one cell can drift up to 450 couples from its expected count by chance alone. Both cells sit inside that band. His verdict covered all 144 cells: the signs had no effect on who married whom. The study ran again in the Skeptical Inquirer in March 2008. So this page gives the pair no score. It uses the old symbols as a way to talk about two styles of life.

How common is a Cancer and Sagittarius couple?

Your Sun sign is the slice of sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Cancer runs from about June 21 to July 22. Sagittarius runs from about November 22 to December 21. The exact hour shifts a little each year, as our guide to the zodiac signs shows.

The signs are not the same size in the birth count. We use one reference for all our pair pages. It holds 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014, counted day by day. In that count, 8.84 percent of babies are Cancer. Only 7.95 percent are Sagittarius.

Now pair two people at random. The couple can be a Cancer woman with a Sagittarius man, or the reverse. Both count. So the chance is two times 8.84 percent times 7.95 percent. That gives 1.41 percent, or about 1 couple in 71.

Pair of signsChance for a random US couple.
Leo and Virgo, the most common mixed pairAbout 1 in 62.
Cancer and PiscesAbout 1 in 70.
Cancer and SagittariusAbout 1 in 71.
What an even split would give1 in 72.
Capricorn and Aquarius, the rarest mixed pairAbout 1 in 83.

So Cancer and Sagittarius rank 29th of the 66 mixed pairs, close to the middle. Cancer pulls the pair up. The Sun spends more than 31 days in Cancer, the longest season of the year. Our Cancer sign page explains why. Sagittarius pulls it down. Its season is shorter, and it falls in a slow part of the birth year.

Two holidays, two gaps in the birth count

Here is the fact at the heart of this page. Each of these two signs holds one big US holiday. July 4 sits in the middle of Cancer season, every single year. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, so it falls between November 22 and 28. That puts it at the start of Sagittarius season.

We took the daily birth counts for 2000 to 2014. For each year, we set the holiday beside the other days of its sign’s season. Then we took the ratio and averaged it over the 15 years.

DayAverage US births that dayCompared with a usual day of the season.
A usual day of Cancer seasonAbout 11,660 birthsThe baseline for Cancer.
July 4About 8,820 birthsAbout 25 percent fewer.
A usual day of Sagittarius seasonAbout 11,150 birthsThe baseline for Sagittarius.
ThanksgivingAbout 7,350 birthsAbout 35 percent fewer.
Thanksgiving, set beside other Thursdays of the seasonAbout 7,350 birthsAbout 43 percent fewer.

The Thursday line matters. Thursday is a busy day for births, with about 12,850 on average. Thanksgiving is a Thursday, yet it has fewer births than the average Sunday, which has about 7,520. July 4 looks more like a Saturday, which has about 8,560.

In both seasons, the holiday is the quietest date on the calendar. For Cancer, July 4 is the lowest by far. The next lowest date is July 5, with about 10,740 births. For Sagittarius, the three lowest dates all fall in the week of November 22 to 28, where Thanksgiving lands.

Why do holidays have fewer births?

A baby’s birthday is not left fully to nature. Many births are planned. A doctor sets a date for a C-section or for starting labor with medicine. Those planned births avoid weekends and holidays, when fewer staff are on duty. So the count drops on those days, and rises on the days around them.

The gap has grown. We ran the same test on a second file, from the National Center for Health Statistics, for 1994 to 2003. In those years, July 4 had about 20 percent fewer births than a usual Cancer day. Thanksgiving had about 29 percent fewer than a usual Sagittarius day. By 2000 to 2014, the gaps had grown to 25 and 35 percent.

Christmas Day shows the same effect even more strongly. It was the lowest birth day of the year in 14 of those 15 years. But Christmas falls in Capricorn season, so it belongs to another page.

That page is our guide to Virgo and Capricorn compatibility, where Christmas sits beside the busiest birthdays of the year.

Is Thanksgiving always a Sagittarius day?

Almost always in full, and always in part. The Sun enters Sagittarius on November 21, 22 or 23, depending on the year. Thanksgiving can fall as early as November 22. So in some years, the Sun changes sign on the holiday itself.

Thanksgiving has been the fourth Thursday of November since 1942. We checked every one from 1942 to 2100, in New York time. Of those 159 holidays, 147 fall fully in Sagittarius. The other 12 start in Scorpio and turn to Sagittarius during the day. None stays in Scorpio from start to end.

Recent ThanksgivingWhen the Sun entered Sagittarius, New York time.
November 22, 20011:00 a.m. on the holiday, so the first hour was Scorpio.
November 22, 200711:50 a.m. on the holiday, so the morning was Scorpio.
November 22, 20184:00 a.m. on the holiday, so the early hours were Scorpio.
November 22, 20357:03 a.m. on the holiday, the next split Thanksgiving.

July 4 has no such doubt. The Sun enters Cancer around June 21 and leaves around July 22. July 4 sits deep inside, every year.

Home and the road: what the holidays say in sign language

The data stop here. What follows is symbol, not proof. Still, the match is neat, and it helps to explain how the old books read this pair.

Cancer is the sign of home, family and the table. Its ruler is the Moon, which waxes and wanes each month. July 4 is a home holiday. People gather in the yard, feed a crowd and watch the sky light up. That is Cancer’s style of care: feed people and keep them close.

Sagittarius is the sign of the road, the long trip and the big view. Its ruler is Jupiter, the planet of growth and faith. Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest travel weeks of the US year. Millions of people cross the country to reach one table. That is the Sagittarius part: the journey, the story told on arrival, the wide circle of guests.

Put the two holidays side by side, and you have the pair in one line. Cancer builds the table. Sagittarius makes the trip to reach it. A Cancer and Sagittarius couple can use that picture. One partner keeps the base warm. The other brings the world back to it.

Five signs apart: a quincunx

Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count from Cancer to Sagittarius: Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius. That is five steps of 30 degrees, or 150 degrees. An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky. The 150 degree angle is called a quincunx, or an inconjunct.

It is not one of the four classic aspects. The old books count only the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Modern astrologers added the quincunx and read it as an awkward link. The two signs share no element and no mode. Cancer is water and cardinal, meaning it opens a season. Sagittarius is fire and mutable, meaning it closes one. Our page on Gemini and Capricorn, a quincunx, not a square reads the same angle in another pair.

A quincunx by sign is not always a quincunx by degree. A sign is 30 degrees wide, so two Suns in these signs can sit anywhere from 120 to 180 degrees apart. A chart reader counts an aspect only when the angle is close. The room they allow is called the orb. For any two signs five apart, about 19 percent of couples fall within 3 degrees of 150. About 36 percent fall within 6 degrees, and about 56 percent within 10. The shape of the wheel sets those shares, not the signs.

What Ptolemy said: two ways to read the pair

Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria, around 150 AD. It shaped astrology for the next 1,500 years. In Book 1, he lists the ties that link two signs. Then, in chapter 16, he names the signs with no tie at all. He calls them disjunct, or alien. They are one or five signs apart, with none of the other ties. Cancer and Sagittarius are five signs apart, so the question is real.

The first reading: by whole signs, the pair is disjunct

Frank Robbins translated the book in 1940. His notes list the pairs that command and obey. Cancer pairs with Capricorn there, and Sagittarius with Leo. His notes also list the pairs that behold each other. Sagittarius pairs with Aquarius there, and Cancer is left without a mate. So by whole signs, Cancer and Sagittarius share no tie. In Ptolemy’s terms, they are disjunct. Modern writers such as Chris Brennan call this state aversion: two signs that cannot see each other.

The second reading: by degree, the pair rises in equal time

Ptolemy gives a reason for the command and obey tie. The two signs sit the same distance from an equinox point. So they take the same time to rise over the horizon. Measure that degree by degree, from the start of Aries, and the mirror of Cancer is Sagittarius. The mirror of 10 degrees Cancer is 20 degrees Sagittarius. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, calls this mirror point a contra-antiscion.

We checked the rising times with the standard formula. In New York, Cancer takes about 2 hours 22 minutes to rise. Sagittarius takes the same 2 hours 22 minutes, to the second. By this reading, Cancer is the side that commands, since its days are longer than its nights. Sagittarius is the side that obeys. Take that as a label for the sky, not a rule for who leads at home. We give both readings because the text supports both.

Taurus rises in only about 1 hour 26 minutes, a gap our page on Taurus and Sagittarius compatibility measures.

Jupiter: the planet both signs honor

Every sign has a ruler, a planet that owns it the way a host owns a house. Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Jupiter is also exalted in Cancer. Exalted means honored: the old books say a planet does its best work there. Ptolemy gives the reason. Jupiter brings the fertile north winds, and it reaches its farthest point north in Cancer. Lilly keeps the same table.

So the same planet holds high rank in both signs of this couple. The other ruler gives nothing back. The Moon rules Cancer, but in Sagittarius it has no major rank, neither strong nor weak. The tie runs one way. Jupiter feels at home on both sides. The Moon walks into Sagittarius as a plain visitor.

Two of our pages put numbers on this tie. Our Sagittarius sign page finds Jupiter at home for 10.22 percent of Sagittarius Suns. Our page on Cancer and Pisces, where one planet is strong in both signs finds Jupiter in Cancer for 9.87 percent of Cancer Suns. Both counts use 67 full laps of Jupiter, from 1607 to 2402. So about one partner in ten, on each side, carries Jupiter in their own sign.

Jupiter was last in Cancer from June 9, 2025 to June 30, 2026. So every Cancer born in the summer of 2025 has Jupiter exalted. A reader would say such a Cancer has a little Sagittarius built in.

Where the pair snags

The quincunx is read as a link between two people who speak different languages. Water feels first. Fire acts first. Here are four snags from the sign books, each with a small step.

Where it snagsWhat Cancer feelsWhat Sagittarius feelsA small step that helps.
PlansSafe with a known routineHemmed in by a fixed weekKeep one fixed night and one open weekend each month.
Honest wordsHurt by a blunt remarkBlamed for simply telling the truthSay the kind part first, then the true part.
Time apartWorried by silence on a tripTied down by constant check-insAgree on one call a day, at a set time.
Money and homeWants a safe store for laterWants a fund for the next tripKeep one shared pot and one travel pot.

None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with these styles can use them. That is the honest point. The signs give a name to a pattern. The fix lives in plain talk.

The rest of the chart counts for more

A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Comparing two whole charts is called synastry. Robert Hand’s 1975 book, Planets in Composite, goes further and blends two charts into one. Stephen Arroyo, in his 1975 book on the four elements, reads water as the element of feeling and fire as the element of spirit and energy. For love, three points carry more weight than the Sun.

The Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. Venus shows what a person finds lovely, and our page on Cancer and Sagittarius Venus placements reads the pair at that level. Mars shows how each one chases what they want. For this pair, add Jupiter. Check which sign it sits in for each partner, and whether it touches the other’s Sun or Moon.

So a Cancer Sun can have an Aries Moon. A Sagittarius Sun can have Venus in Scorpio. Each of those says more than the Sun pair does. If you know both birth dates and times, the full comparison is where the detail lives.

How we measured

For the birth shares, we used daily US Social Security birth counts for 2000 to 2014, published by FiveThirtyEight. We matched each day to the exact minute the Sun changed sign, in Central time. A second file, from the National Center for Health Statistics for 1994 to 2003, gives the same picture.

For the holidays, we used the same two files. For each year, we set July 4 beside every other full day of that year’s Cancer season. We set Thanksgiving beside every other full day of that year’s Sagittarius season. We took the ratio for each year, then the average over all years. A second test set each holiday beside the same weekday in its season.

For the Sun’s entry into Sagittarius, we used the astronomy-engine library. We found each entry by halving the time step until it fell under one second. A separate table of Sun entries, made for our other pair pages, agrees within ten seconds. For the old rules, we read Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 19, in the Robbins translation. For the census, we read Tables 1 and 7 in the paper by David Voas.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cancer and Sagittarius compatible?

Astrology reads them as a quincunx, an awkward link between water and fire. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and is exalted in Cancer, so one planet is strong in both. No study has shown that this or any sign pair lasts longer, so treat it as a lens, not a forecast.

How common is a Cancer and Sagittarius couple?

In US birth data from 2000 to 2014, about 1 random couple in 71 is one Cancer and one Sagittarius. That ranks 29th of the 66 mixed sign pairs.

Why are fewer babies born on July 4 and Thanksgiving?

Many births are planned, and planned births avoid holidays. From 2000 to 2014, July 4 had about 25 percent fewer births than a usual Cancer day. Thanksgiving had about 35 percent fewer than a usual Sagittarius day.

Is Thanksgiving always in Sagittarius season?

Every Thanksgiving from 1942 to 2100 is a Sagittarius day, fully or in part. In 147 of 159 years, the whole day is Sagittarius, in New York time.

Do Cancer and Sagittarius see each other in traditional astrology?

By whole signs, no: Ptolemy’s scheme makes them disjunct. By degree, each Cancer point has a mirror in Sagittarius that rises in the same time, about 2 hours 22 minutes in New York.
