Cancer and Pisces Compatibility: One Planet Is Strong in Both Signs

Cancer and Pisces compatibility has a secret that most pages skip. It sits in the oldest rulebook of Western astrology. When Claudius Ptolemy handed out the signs to the planets, he gave Pisces to Jupiter for one stated reason. Pisces forms a trine with Cancer, the home of the Moon. So this pair is not just two water signs that get along. The link between them was built into the map from the start.

There is a second half to the story. Jupiter rules Pisces, and Jupiter is also exalted in Cancer. Exalted means honored: the old books say a planet does its best work there. So one planet is strong in both signs of this couple. Among the three pairs of water signs, only Cancer and Pisces have that.

Sagittarius, Jupiter’s other home, shares the same Jupiter tie without the trine, as our page on Cancer and Sagittarius compatibility shows.

This page checks both claims in the old texts. Then it counts. About one Cancer in ten is born with Jupiter in Cancer. About one random US couple in 70 is a Cancer and a Pisces. Read all of it as a lens, not a forecast.

The short version

QuestionWhat we found.
How common is the pair in the US?About 1 random couple in 70, the 23rd most common of 66 mixed pairs.
What angle links the signs?A trine, four signs or 120 degrees apart.
How many couples form that angle closely?About 36 percent within 6 degrees.
Why did Ptolemy give Pisces to Jupiter?Because Pisces is in trine to Cancer, the Moon’s home.
Where is Jupiter exalted? In Cancer, the other sign of this pair.
How many Cancers have Jupiter in Cancer?9.87 percent, about one in ten.
Did real marriages favor this pair? No, the gap was 0.05 percent, which is noise.

First, what no one can promise

Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Sun sign predicts whether a couple will last. The biggest test we know of was run by David Voas, a British sociologist, in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales. It held the birth dates of about 10.3 million married couples.

His raw table showed too many couples with the same sign. He traced most of them to errors on the forms. Some had one birthday typed in for both spouses. Some had a missing date filled in as the 1st of the month. He removed those couples and the excess of same sign pairs. That fixed table is his Table 7.

We read the Cancer and Pisces cells in that table. Cancer wives with Pisces husbands came to 68,440 couples. Chance alone predicts 68,502. Pisces wives with Cancer husbands came to 68,721. Chance predicts 68,588. Add the two, and the pair sits 71 couples above chance, out of about 137,000. That is 0.05 percent. Voas notes that one cell can drift up to 450 couples from its expected count by chance alone. Both cells sit well inside that band.

His verdict covered all 144 cells: the signs had no effect on who married whom. The study ran again in the Skeptical Inquirer in March 2008. So this page gives the pair no score. It uses the old symbols as a way to talk about two styles of care.

How common is a Cancer and Pisces couple?

Your Sun sign is the slice of sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Cancer runs from about June 21 to July 22. Pisces runs from about February 19 to March 20. The exact hour shifts a little each year, as our guide to the zodiac signs shows.

The signs are not the same size in the birth count. We use one reference for all our pair pages. It holds 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014, counted day by day. In that count, 8.84 percent of babies are Cancer. Only 8.04 percent are Pisces.

Now pair two people at random. The couple can be a Cancer woman with a Pisces man, or the reverse. Both count. So the chance is two times 8.84 percent times 8.04 percent. That gives 1.42 percent, or about 1 couple in 70.

Leo and Virgo, the most common mixed pairAbout 1 in 62.
Cancer and PiscesAbout 1 in 70.
What an even split would give1 in 72.
Capricorn and Aquarius, the rarest mixed pairAbout 1 in 83.

So Cancer and Pisces rank 23rd of the 66 mixed pairs. Cancer does the lifting. The Sun spends 31.451 days in Cancer, the longest season of the year. Our Cancer sign page explains why: the Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun seems to crawl. Summer is a busy time for US births as well. Pisces season lasts 29.961 days and falls in a quieter part of the birth year.

A trine by sign, and a trine by degree

Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count from Pisces to Cancer: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer. That is four steps of 30 degrees, or 120 degrees. An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky. The 120 degree angle is called a trine. The old books treat it as the easiest link of all.

Scorpio closes the triangle as the third water sign. Our pages on Cancer and Scorpio, a trine with a knot inside and on Pisces and Scorpio cover the other two sides.

A trine by sign is not always a trine by degree. A sign is 30 degrees wide, so two Suns in these signs can sit anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees apart. A chart reader counts an aspect only when the angle is close. The room they allow is called the orb. For any two signs four apart, about 19 percent of couples fall within 3 degrees of a true trine. About 36 percent fall within 6 degrees, and about 56 percent within 10. The shape of the wheel sets those shares, not the signs. So only about one Cancer and Pisces couple in three has a close trine between the Suns.

Why Pisces belongs to Jupiter

Every sign has a ruler, a planet that owns it the way a host owns a house. Ptolemy set out the plan in the Tetrabiblos, around 150 AD. He wrote it in Alexandria, and it shaped astrology for the next 1,500 years.

His plan starts with the two lights. The Sun gets Leo and the Moon gets Cancer. These signs pass closest to the point straight overhead, and they are the warmest. Then the other planets get two signs each, one on each side. Saturn, the planet farthest out, gets the two signs across from the lights. Those are Capricorn and Aquarius.

Next comes Jupiter. Ptolemy gives it Sagittarius and Pisces, the “windy and fecund” pair next in line. Fecund is an old word for fertile. He adds the reason. These two signs are “in triangular aspect to the luminaries”, which he calls a harmonious and kind link. Frank Robbins, who translated the book in 1940, spells it out in a note. Sagittarius is in trine to Leo, the Sun’s house. Pisces is in trine to Cancer.

So the trine between Cancer and Pisces is not a side effect. In Ptolemy’s scheme, it is the reason Pisces went to Jupiter at all. Mars, by contrast, got signs in square to the lights, to match its harsh nature.

Why Jupiter is exalted in Cancer

Ptolemy then explains a second rank, the exaltation. He gives a reason from the sky and the weather. Jupiter, he says, brings the fertile north winds. It reaches its farthest point north in Cancer, and there it brings its own power to fullness. So Cancer became Jupiter’s exaltation. Capricorn, the sign across the wheel, became its fall, the place where it is weakest.

William Lilly kept the same table in Christian Astrology, in 1647. He lists Jupiter as ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces and exalted in Cancer. Our Pisces sign page traces how Jupiter held Pisces alone in every source until Neptune was found in 1846.

One planet strong in both signs

Put the two rules side by side. Jupiter owns Pisces. Jupiter is honored in Cancer. The same planet has high rank in both signs of the couple. Compare the three water pairs.

Water pairWhat the old tables say about their rulers.
Cancer and PiscesJupiter rules Pisces and is exalted in Cancer, strong on both sides.
Cancer and ScorpioThe Moon falls in Scorpio and Mars falls in Cancer, weak on both sides.
Pisces and ScorpioVenus is exalted in Pisces but in exile in Scorpio, split.

Exile, also called detriment, is the sign across from a planet’s home. The pattern is neat. Cancer and Scorpio share a double weakness. Pisces and Scorpio share a split. Cancer and Pisces share a double strength, carried by one planet. We checked this against Ptolemy and Lilly, counting only homes and exaltations.

The Moon is the other ruler here. It rules Cancer. In Pisces, Lilly gives it no major rank, neither strong nor weak. Ptolemy gives it a small share of the whole water triangle by night, next to Mars and Venus. So the Moon walks into Pisces as a welcome guest, while Jupiter walks into Cancer as an honored one.

How many real charts carry the tie?

A rule about signs is one thing. A birth chart holds more than the Sun. So we asked a plain question. Among people born with the Sun in Cancer, how many also have Jupiter in Cancer?

Jupiter takes about 11.86 years to go round the zodiac once. We call one trip a lap. We read the Sun and Jupiter every six hours over 67 full laps of Jupiter, from 1607 to 2402. That is more than one million moments. For each moment we noted both signs. The shares below count only people with the given Sun sign.

Born with the Sun inJupiter in Cancer, its exaltationJupiter in Pisces, its homeJupiter in Capricorn, its fall.
Cancer9.87 percent7.30 percent6.94 percent of Cancers.
Pisces8.04 percent9.26 percent9.22 percent of Pisces.
Any sign, all of the time8.48 percent7.71 percent8.16 percent of the time.

Three facts stand out. First, about one Cancer in ten carries Jupiter exalted in their own sign. Over all of time, Jupiter spends only 8.48 percent of its lap in Cancer. Cancers get more than their share.

Second, a Cancer is more likely to have Jupiter exalted than in its fall. The ratio is about 1.4 to 1. Only Leo and Virgo beat Cancer as the Jupiter sign of a Cancer, at 10.22 and 9.98 percent.

Third, the Pisces side matches our Pisces sign page. It lists 9.26 percent of Pisces Suns with Jupiter at home, over the same 67 laps. So both partners in this couple carry Jupiter in their own sign more than one time in eleven.

Why does the Sun’s sign pull Jupiter toward it? Watch Jupiter from Earth. When Jupiter sits on the far side of the Sun, it moves forward, in step with the Sun. The gap between them closes slowly. When Jupiter faces the Sun across the sky, it seems to slip backward. The gap then changes fast. So Jupiter spends more time near the Sun than across from it. Across all twelve signs, the Sun and Jupiter share a sign 9.85 percent of the time. An even split would give 8.33 percent.

Which birthdays carry Jupiter in Cancer?

Jupiter visits Cancer for about a year, once per lap. Each lap, it arrives about 17 days earlier in the calendar. So the Cancer birthdays it covers shift from one visit to the next. All times below are New York time.

Jupiter’s stay in CancerCancer birthdays with Jupiter in Cancer.
July 12, 2001 to August 1, 2002Late Cancer season 2001, and all of Cancer season 2002.
June 25, 2013 to July 16, 2014Cancer 2013 from June 25, and Cancer 2014 up to July 16.
June 9, 2025 to June 30, 2026All of Cancer season 2025, and June 21 to 30, 2026.
Next stay, 2037 to 2038All of Cancer season 2037, and none in 2038.

Jupiter left Cancer at 1:56 a.m. on June 30, 2026. So every Cancer born in the summer of 2025 has Jupiter exalted. The next full set comes in 2037.

For Pisces, the home years run on the same twelve year beat. Jupiter was in Pisces for all of Pisces season in 1998, 2010 and 2022. The next one is 2034.

The Venus side: a door Cancer cannot open

Pisces has its own guest of honor. Venus is exalted in Pisces. Ptolemy says she gains power there, where the moist spring begins. Our Pisces sign page counts nearly one Pisces in four born with Venus in Pisces.

A Cancer can never have it. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. Pisces sits at least 90 degrees from any Cancer Sun. So Venus in Pisces never appears in a Cancer chart. In our run, the count was exactly zero. Jupiter crosses the line between these two signs. Venus stays on the Pisces side.

What the tie means in a reading

Here is how the tradition reads this pair. These are sign portraits, not facts about anyone you know.

Cancer is a cardinal water sign. Cardinal signs open a season, so Cancer starts things: a home, a meal, a circle of care. Its ruler is the Moon, which waxes and wanes each month. Stephen Arroyo, in his 1975 book on the four elements, calls water the element of feeling. Cancer feels first, then acts to protect.

Pisces is a mutable water sign. Mutable signs close a season, so Pisces lets go and blends. Its old ruler is Jupiter, the planet of growth, faith and wide horizons. Modern writers add Neptune as a second ruler, the planet of dreams and dissolving edges.

Now add the Jupiter tie. In old terms, Pisces is Jupiter’s home and Cancer is where Jupiter is treated as royalty. A reader would say the two signs share one host who likes both rooms. Cancer gives Jupiter a warm house to grow in. Pisces gives it open water to wander.

The Moon and Jupiter make a soft team. The Moon asks for comfort and routine. Jupiter asks for meaning and room to grow. Put plainly, Cancer builds the nest and Pisces keeps the window open.

Two water signs share a language of feeling. The snags come from too much of the same thing. Here are four from the sign books, each with a small step.

Where it snagsWhat Cancer feelsWhat Pisces feelsA small step that helps.
PlansUneasy when dates stay vagueHemmed in by a fixed planFix two dates a month and leave the rest open.
MoodsPulled under by the other’s low dayBlamed for a mood it did not chooseName whose feeling it is before you help.
ConflictRetreats into its shellDrifts away in silenceSet a time to come back to the talk.
Money and homeWants a safe store for laterGives freely to friends in needKeep one shared pot and one free pot each.

None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with a soft style can use them. That is the honest point. The signs give a name to a pattern. The fix lives in plain talk.

The rest of the chart counts for more

A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Comparing two whole charts is called synastry. Robert Hand’s 1975 book, Planets in Composite, goes further and blends two charts into one. For love, three points carry more weight than the Sun.

The Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. Our page on Pisces and Cancer as Moon signs reads this pair at that level. Venus shows what a person finds lovely, and our page on Cancer and Pisces Venus placements covers it. Mars shows how each one chases what they want. For this pair, add Jupiter. Check which sign it sits in for each partner, and whether it touches the other’s Sun or Moon.

So a Cancer Sun can have a Gemini Moon. A Pisces Sun can have Venus in Aries. Each of those says more than the Sun pair does. If you know both birth dates and times, the full comparison is where the detail lives.

How we measured

For the birth shares, we used daily US Social Security birth counts for 2000 to 2014, published by FiveThirtyEight. We matched each day to the exact minute the Sun changed sign, in Central time. A second file, from the National Center for Health Statistics for 1994 to 2003, gives the same picture.

For Jupiter, we used the astronomy-engine library. We read the Sun and Jupiter every six hours over 67 full laps of Jupiter. Each lap runs from one entry into Aries to the next, from May 9, 1607 to March 3, 2402, in UTC. Full laps matter: a part lap at the end would tip the count toward one sign. As a second route, we ran a separate grid every seven hours, offset by two and a half hours. Both grids agree within 0.01 point.

We found Jupiter’s entry and exit dates by halving the time step until it fell under one second. We checked four of them against JPL Horizons, the NASA ephemeris service. They agree within about six minutes.

For the old rules, we read Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 17 to 19, in the Robbins translation. For the census, we read Tables 1 and 7 in the paper by David Voas.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cancer and Pisces compatible?

Astrology reads them as a trine, its easiest link, between two water signs. Jupiter rules Pisces and is exalted in Cancer, so one planet is strong in both. No study has shown that this or any sign pair lasts longer, so treat it as a lens, not a forecast.

How common is a Cancer and Pisces couple?

In US birth data from 2000 to 2014, about 1 random couple in 70 is one Cancer and one Pisces. That ranks 23rd of the 66 mixed sign pairs.

Why is Jupiter important for Cancer and Pisces?

Jupiter is the old ruler of Pisces and is exalted in Cancer. Ptolemy gave Pisces to Jupiter because Pisces forms a trine with Cancer, the Moon’s home.

How many Cancers have Jupiter in Cancer?

About 9.87 percent, or one Cancer in ten, over 67 full laps of Jupiter from 1607 to 2402. Every Cancer born in the summer of 2025 has it.

Is every Cancer and Pisces pair a real trine?

By sign, yes. By degree, no. With a 6 degree orb, only about 36 percent of couples have Suns in a true trine.
