Cancer Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility puts the Moon in its own home next to a Moon with no rank. Cancer is the sign the Moon rules. Pisces gives it no title at all. The two signs sit four signs apart, in a water trine, the smoothest angle on the old list.
One planet links them. Jupiter rules Pisces, and Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. So the planet that hosts the Pisces Moon is an honored guest in the Cancer Moon’s sign. This page explains that link, and what the trine does and does not promise.
Before anything else: astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will turn out. Use what follows as a lens, not a forecast.

A Moon sign, briefly
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied when you were born. Astrologers read it as the private self: the part that feels first and thinks second. It shows how you rest, what you need to feel safe, and how you care for those you love.
Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Cancer and Pisces are four signs apart, which is a trine. In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy names the trine and the sextile as the harmonious angles. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance.
The Moon at home
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is the sign it rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits across from the home, and the fall across from the exaltation. The Moon’s home is Cancer, and its exaltation is Taurus.
A planet at home works on its own terms. The Cancer Moon feels safe when it has a base: a house, a family, a set of people to feed and guard. It reads moods fast and remembers them. When hurt, it pulls back into its shell and waits to feel safe again. Our page on the Moon in Cancer looks at the home seat in detail.
The Pisces Moon has no rank in its sign. A planet like that is called peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. It gets no extra help, and no harm. The Pisces Moon takes in the feelings around it like a sponge. It gives care freely and finds limits hard to hold. Our page on the Moon in Pisces covers that sign alone.
So one partner starts from the Moon’s strongest seat, and the other from a neutral one. Neither starts from a hard place.
Jupiter, honored in the Moon’s house
Each Moon answers to the ruler of its sign. The Cancer Moon answers to the Moon itself, which is why the old books call this Moon strong. The Pisces Moon answers to Jupiter, the planet of faith, growth and mercy. Modern astrologers add Neptune as a ruler of Pisces.
In Ptolemy’s list of exaltations, Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. So the Pisces Moon’s host is an honored guest in the Cancer Moon’s home. Read as a symbol, the Pisces Moon’s hope and mercy find a warm welcome in the Cancer Moon’s world. The Cancer Moon, in turn, gains a partner who helps it believe that things will turn out all right.
The link runs one way. The Moon holds no major rank in Pisces. It sits there as a traveler, not as a guest of honor. Our page on Cancer and Pisces Sun sign compatibility explains how Jupiter’s two roles shape the pair when the Suns fall in these signs.
What the water trine brings
A trine joins signs of one element. Here that is water, the element of feeling and bonds. Three pairs make a water trine: Cancer with Scorpio, Cancer with Pisces, and Scorpio with Pisces. This is the only one that pairs a cardinal sign with a mutable one.
Cardinal signs start things and open a season. Cancer opens summer. Mutable signs close a season and adapt. Pisces closes winter. So the Cancer Moon takes the lead in making a home, and the Pisces Moon fills it with warmth. Both are night signs, which Ptolemy calls feminine. Both keep the deepest feelings indoors.
The risk is the flip side of the ease. Two water Moons can feel each other’s moods so well that no one says them out loud. The Cancer Moon guards, and the Pisces Moon absorbs. When both are low, the home fills up with feeling and runs short of plans.
What Ptolemy’s other ties say
Ptolemy names two quieter links besides the angles. Some signs “command and obey”, and some “behold” each other. Both rest on mirror images across the solstice or equinox points. Scholars read them two ways: by whole sign, as in the notes of Frank Robbins’s 1940 translation, and by degree, as William Lilly did.
Cancer and Pisces share neither link, on either reading. By whole sign, note 83 leaves Cancer with no partner to behold, and note 80 has Cancer command Capricorn, not Pisces. By degree, Cancer’s mirror images fall in Gemini and Sagittarius, and those of Pisces fall in Libra and Aries. So the trine is the pair’s whole classical tie. For a water pair that does behold each other by whole sign, see Scorpio Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility.
How close is the trine?
A trine by sign is not always one by degree. A Cancer Moon at 1 degree and a Pisces Moon at 29 degrees are four signs apart. But the real gap is 148 degrees, far from 120. Astrologers allow some slack around the exact angle, called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true trine. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These shares are the same for all Moon pairs, since the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Cancer Moon and Pisces Moon couples have an exact trine. In about 3.6 percent, the Moons form a square across the sign line instead.
The new-moon lean of the Cancer Moon
A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For the exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer Moon | 8.48 percent, Sun in Cancer | 7.92 percent, Sun in Capricorn. |
| Pisces Moon | 8.07 percent, Sun in Pisces | 8.32 percent, Sun in Virgo. |
The Cancer Moon row is the extreme of the zodiac. No Moon sign has a higher share of new moon births, and none has a lower share of full moon births. The cause is the Sun’s speed. Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest then. It spends about 31.5 days in Cancer, the longest stay of any sign. That gives the Moon the most days to join it there. The Sun crosses Capricorn in under 29.5 days, which leaves the fewest days for the Moon to face it.
In a couple, the Cancer Moon tips the balance. 15.87 percent of Cancer Moon and Pisces Moon couples include at least one new moon birth, 23rd of the 78 pairs. Only 15.58 percent include at least one full moon birth, 56th of the 78.
How common is a Cancer Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
The Moon gives each sign nearly the same share of its time. Between 1600 and 2400, every sign holds from 8.331 to 8.336 percent. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A pair in the same sign comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps are smaller than the error of our method.
First, check both Moons
The Moon moves fast. It stays about 54.6 hours in a sign on average, and from 46.9 to 61.1 hours in all. As a result, it changes sign during 43.92 percent of days. For people born on those days, the hour of birth settles the Moon sign.
Free charts without a birth time use noon. That puts 10.98 percent of people in the wrong Moon sign, about one in nine. Across two noon charts, 20.75 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair, one couple in five. Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates. A Cancer Moon born early in the day could be a Gemini Moon. A Pisces Moon born early could be an Aquarius Moon.
Where the figures come from
We ran two routes with no shared code. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun between 1600 and 2400, each to a tenth of a second. Then it summed the hours in each sign. The noon test placed a chart at 12:00 UTC on every day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and its own tables. It noted the Moon’s sign each hour over the same eight hundred years, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes more than seven million data points. Neither route drew random numbers. The two agree within 0.04 points on each Moon figure here. We used the tropical zodiac, as seen from Earth.
What large studies show
The biggest check of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas examined 10.3 million married couples. His 2007 paper, “Ten million marriages”, found that Sun signs had no effect on who married whom. A small surplus of same-sign couples came from data entry errors. The study looked at Sun signs. No test of that scale covers Moon signs.
So the home seat is not a guarantee, and the trine is not a promise. They are symbols. A Cancer Moon and a Pisces Moon both lead with care. The symbols point to where that shared softness helps, and to where it needs a plan and a clear word.
Habits that suit the pattern
- The Cancer Moon says what it fears, instead of retreating and hoping to be found.
- The Pisces Moon names one limit a week, so care does not turn into self-erasure.
- Both set one practical goal for the home, so feeling has somewhere to go.
- Both check in with words, even when each thinks the other already knows.

Frequently asked questions
Are a Cancer Moon and a Pisces Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as a water trine, a smooth angle between two night signs. The Cancer Moon is at home. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat this as a lens.
Why is the Moon strong in Cancer?
Cancer is the sign the Moon rules, its home. In the old reading, a planet at home acts on its own terms. The Moon’s other strong seat is Taurus, where it is exalted.
What links Jupiter to this pair?
Jupiter rules Pisces and is exalted in Cancer. So the Pisces Moon’s ruler is an honored guest in the Cancer Moon’s sign. The Moon has no major rank in Pisces.
How common is a Cancer Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Why are Cancer Moons born near the new moon more than others?
The Sun moves slowest in early July and spends about 31.5 days in Cancer. That gives the Moon more time to share the sign. 8.48 percent of Cancer Moons have the Sun in Cancer too.
