Scorpio Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility joins two water signs set four signs apart. That distance is a trine, the smoothest angle on the old list. Yet the two Moons do not start from the same place. In Scorpio, the Moon sits in its fall, one of its two hardest seats. In Pisces, it holds no rank at all.
There is a second tie, and it is the thread of this page. In the Tetrabiblos, the Greek astronomer Ptolemy says some pairs of signs “behold” each other. Read by whole signs, as his translator Frank Robbins sets out in his notes, Scorpio and Pisces make one of those pairs. Read by degree, as William Lilly did, they do not. We walk through both readings below.
A word before we start. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will fare. Take what follows as a way of looking, not a forecast.
Scorpio and Pisces Moons at a glance

| Kind of sign | Both are night signs, the Moon’s own kind. |
| Moon strength | In its fall in Scorpio, with no rank in Pisces. |
| Rulers | Mars for Scorpio, Jupiter for Pisces. |
| Do the signs behold each other? | Yes by whole sign, no by degree. |

What your Moon sign stands for
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in at the moment you were born. Astrologers read it as your inner weather: what soothes you, what scares you, and how you care for people.
Two Moons are compared by the count of signs between them. Scorpio and Pisces sit four signs apart, which makes a trine. Ptolemy lists the trine with the sextile as a friendly angle. Our moon sign compatibility guide goes through every distance, from the same sign to the opposite one.
Two water Moons, two speeds
A trine joins signs of the same element. Here that element is water, the element of feeling, memory and bonds. Only three pairs make a water trine. Cancer meets Scorpio, Cancer meets Pisces, and Scorpio meets Pisces. This is the one of the three that leaves out Cancer, the Moon’s own home.
The modes set the pace. Scorpio is fixed, which means it holds a course and keeps it. Pisces is mutable, which means it bends and takes the shape of what is around it. So one Moon grips and the other flows. In a calm week, that is a fine match. Scorpio gives the bond a spine, and Pisces keeps it soft.
In a hard week, the Scorpio Moon holds on to a hurt, and the Pisces Moon slips away from it. Each reads the other’s move as trouble.
The Moon’s fall in Scorpio, and no rank in Pisces
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is the sign it rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits across from the home, and the fall sits across from the exaltation. For the Moon, the home is Cancer and the exaltation is Taurus. So its exile is Capricorn, and its fall is Scorpio, the sign opposite Taurus.
A fall is not a curse. Think of a guest who shows up at the wrong party. The guest still talks and still cares, but has to work harder to be heard. A Scorpio Moon feels a great deal and shows a little. Trust comes late, and once given, it stays. Our page on the Moon in Scorpio looks at the fall in more depth.
Pisces is none of the four. A planet with no rank in a sign is called peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. It gets no extra help, and no harm. A Pisces Moon is a guest passing through: open, porous, and quick to pick up the mood of a room. Our page on the Moon in Pisces covers that sign alone.
So one partner starts from a hard seat and the other from a neutral one.
Mars and Jupiter, the two hosts
Each Moon answers to the ruler of its sign. In the old scheme, Mars rules Scorpio and Jupiter rules Pisces. Modern astrologers add Pluto for Scorpio and Neptune for Pisces, but the ranks below come from the older list.
Mars is the planet of heat, drive and defense. A Scorpio Moon hands its moods to Mars, so hurt turns into guard duty. Jupiter is the planet of faith, growth and mercy. A Pisces Moon hands its moods to Jupiter, so hurt turns into a wish to forgive and move on.
Neither host holds a major rank in the other’s sign. Mars has no title in Pisces, and Jupiter has no title in Scorpio. So the bond rests on the shared element and the trine.
A third planet stands in the middle. Venus is exalted in Pisces and in exile in Scorpio. The planet of love is honored in one sign and out of place in the other. Our page on Scorpio Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility follows that thread for the Venus pair.
Do Scorpio and Pisces behold each other?
In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy names signs that “behold” each other, or have “equal power”. The rule is about symmetry. Two signs behold each other when they sit at the same distance from a solstice, one on each side. The solstice signs are Cancer, where the Sun stands at midsummer, and Capricorn, where it stands at midwinter.
The trouble is where you draw the mirror line. There are two answers, and they give different pairs.
| Way of reading | Where the mirror line sits | What it says about Scorpio and Pisces. |
|---|---|---|
| By whole sign | Through the middle of Capricorn, which is left alone | Scorpio and Pisces behold each other. |
| By degree | At the exact point of the solstice, 0 degrees Capricorn | Scorpio mirrors Aquarius, and Pisces mirrors Libra. |
The whole-sign list comes from the notes of Robbins’s 1940 translation. His note 83 gives five pairs: Gemini and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Pisces and Scorpio, Aquarius and Sagittarius. Cancer and Capricorn have no partner. Count from Capricorn and you see why. Sagittarius and Aquarius are one step away, on each side. Scorpio and Pisces are two steps away, on each side.
The degree reading is the one Lilly used in Christian Astrology. He called these mirror points antiscia. A planet at 5 degrees Scorpio has its mirror at 25 degrees Aquarius, not in Pisces. By degree, a Scorpio Moon and a Pisces Moon only meet in the mirror when both sit in the first few degrees of their signs. With a 3 degree margin, that happens to about 1 couple in 200.
So which is right? Both readings have a long history, and this page does not pick one. By whole sign, the pair has a tie beyond the trine. By degree, the trine stands alone. Ptolemy’s other quiet tie, where one sign “commands” another, links neither Scorpio nor Pisces to the other, on either reading.
Is the trine exact?
A trine by sign is not always a trine by degree. Take a Scorpio Moon at 29 degrees and a Pisces Moon at 1 degree. They are four signs apart, but the true gap is 92 degrees. That is close to a square, a tense angle. Astrologers allow some slack around the exact angle, called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true trine. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These shares are the same for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Scorpio Moon and Pisces Moon couples have an exact trine. In about 3.6 percent, the Moons form a square across the sign line instead.
The trine least tied to the new moon
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign across from the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio Moon | 8.06 percent, Sun in Scorpio | 8.33 percent, Sun in Taurus. |
| Pisces Moon | 8.07 percent, Sun in Pisces | 8.32 percent, Sun in Virgo. |
The cause is the Sun’s speed. Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, so the Sun moves fastest across the winter signs. It crosses Scorpio and Pisces a little faster than average. That leaves fewer days for the Moon to join it there. It crosses Taurus and Virgo more slowly, which leaves more days for the Moon to face it from across the sky.
In a couple, the two leans add up. 15.48 percent of Scorpio Moon and Pisces Moon couples include at least one new moon birth. That is the lowest share of all twelve trine pairs. On the other side, 15.96 percent include at least one full moon birth, which puts the pair 16th of the 78.
If your Suns fall in these signs too, see our page on Pisces and Scorpio Sun sign compatibility.
How common is a Scorpio Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
The Moon gives each sign almost the same share of time. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent. So any pair of two different Moon signs turns up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair turns up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Make sure of both Moons first
The Moon is quick. It spends about 54.6 hours in a sign on average, and anywhere from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. As a result, the Moon changes sign during 43.92 percent of days. Someone born on one of those days has two possible Moon signs, and only the hour decides.
Many free charts fill a missing birth time with noon. That guess names the wrong Moon sign for 10.98 percent of people, about one in nine. For a couple, two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair 20.75 percent of the time, about one couple in five. Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moons settled by the dates alone. A Scorpio Moon born early in the day could be a Libra Moon. A Pisces Moon born late could be an Aries Moon.
How we got these numbers
Every figure on this page comes from two separate routes. The first used the Astronomy Engine code library. It found each time the Moon and the Sun changed sign between the years 1600 and 2400, to a tenth of a second. It then added up the hours. The noon test used a chart cast at 12:00 UTC on each day.
The second route used the Swiss Ephemeris, a separate set of star tables. It checked the Moon’s sign once an hour over the same eight centuries, on a grid offset by half an hour. That gives more than seven million checks. No random draws were used. The two routes agree within 0.04 points on every Moon figure here. All values use the tropical zodiac, as seen from Earth.
What the evidence says
The largest test of star-sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples in a 2007 paper, “Ten million marriages”. Sun signs had no effect on who married whom. A small excess of couples sharing a sign traced back to errors in the data. His test covered Sun signs only. Nothing of that size has been run on Moon signs.
So the fall is not a warning, and the trine is not a promise. They are symbols. A Scorpio Moon and a Pisces Moon both feel deeply and both need time alone to settle. The symbols show where that depth helps, and where it needs plain words.
Ways to work with the pattern
These habits follow the symbols. They are not rules.
- The Scorpio Moon names a hurt early, before it hardens into a test.
- The Pisces Moon stays in the room for hard talks, instead of drifting off.
- Both agree on a word that means “I need an hour”, so a retreat is not read as a verdict.
- Both keep small promises exactly, since the fixed Moon trusts what is kept and the mutable Moon feels safe with a clear frame.
Other pairs to compare
The other water trines are close cousins. The Moon’s fall meets its home in Cancer Moon and Scorpio Moon compatibility. The Moon’s home meets Pisces in Cancer Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility. For the Moon’s fall facing its exaltation, see Taurus Moon and Scorpio Moon compatibility. For two Moons in the same water sign, see Pisces Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility.
Frequently asked questions
Are a Scorpio Moon and a Pisces Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as a water trine, a smooth angle between two night signs. One Moon holds on and the other flows. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat this as a lens.
Why is the Moon weak in Scorpio?
Scorpio sits across from Taurus, where the Moon is exalted. The sign opposite an exaltation is a fall. In the old reading, a Moon in its fall feels a great deal but shows less of it.
Do Scorpio and Pisces behold each other in Ptolemy?
By whole sign, yes: Robbins’s note 83 lists Pisces and Scorpio as a pair. By degree, as Lilly read it, no: Scorpio mirrors Aquarius and Pisces mirrors Libra. This page gives both readings.
How common is a Scorpio Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Do I need a birth time to know my Moon sign?
On many days, yes. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine, and for about one couple in five.
