Pisces and Scorpio compatibility starts with a simple fact of the sky. The two signs sit four signs apart, in the same element, water. Astrologers call that link a trine, and they read it as the easiest bond two Sun signs can share.
This guide gives you that reading, and something most pages skip. We counted every US birth of 2024 to see how common a Pisces and Scorpio couple really is. The answer is about one couple in 76. We also checked the old books to see what they really say about this pair, and what they do not.
One thing first, stated plainly. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Sun signs predict which couples last. Read this match as a lens for talking about how two people love, not as a forecast.
Pisces and Scorpio compatibility in one minute
Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. Scorpio runs from about October 23 to November 21. Pisces runs from about February 19 to March 20. Both are water signs. In the old books, water is the element of feeling, memory and bonds.
Scorpio is a fixed sign, the steady middle of its season. It holds on. Pisces is a mutable sign, the last weeks of winter, when one season melts into the next. It adapts. So the pair shares one language of feeling but speaks it at two speeds.
That is the whole story in brief. The rest of this page shows the numbers, the rules behind the trine, and the limits of the method.
How rare is a Pisces and Scorpio couple? One in 76
Most compatibility pages assume each sign holds one birth in twelve. It sounds fair, since there are twelve signs. But babies are not born evenly across the year, and the signs are not all the same length.
So we used the real count. The US National Center for Health Statistics, part of the CDC, publishes a file with every US birth. The 2024 file holds 3,638,436 birth records. We turned each birth into a Sun sign using the exact minute the Sun entered each sign that year.
| Group | Share of US births in 2024 | What that means. |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio Suns | 8.17 percent | About one baby in 12.2. |
| Pisces Suns | 8.08 percent | About one baby in 12.4. |
| Leo Suns, the most common | 9.08 percent | About one baby in 11. |
| An even split, for comparison | 8.33 percent | One baby in 12 exactly. |
Both signs sit a little under an even share. Now take two people at random. The odds that one is a Pisces and the other a Scorpio are two times 8.17 percent times 8.08 percent. That gives 1.32 percent of couples, or about one in 76.
On an even split, the same sum gives one in 72. So the real pair is about 5 percent rarer than the usual math says. For contrast, a Leo and Virgo couple comes out at about one in 62, the most common mixed pair in the 2024 data.
This sum has a catch. It treats the two signs in a couple as unrelated. That is not a guess we made up. It is what the largest test of love signs found, as you will see below.
Births peak in summer, not in Scorpio season
Why are Pisces and Scorpio both below one in twelve? The answer is the birth calendar. We checked the idea that US births peak in the fall or winter. The 2024 data says no.
| Month of 2024 | Births per day, against the yearly norm | Which sign runs then. |
|---|---|---|
| January | 3.4 percent below norm | Capricorn, then Aquarius. |
| February | 1.5 percent below norm | Aquarius, then Pisces. |
| March | 3.1 percent below norm | Pisces, then Aries. |
| August | 6 percent above norm | Leo, then Virgo. |
| October | 2.2 percent above norm | Libra, then Scorpio. |
| November | 1.9 percent below norm | Scorpio, then Sagittarius. |
The US birth peak falls from July to September. August 2024 had the most births of any month, 326,595. That is why Leo and Virgo lead the list.
Scorpio season sits on the way down from that peak. Late October is still busy, and November is quieter. The two halves cancel out. Scorpio ends up with a share of births almost equal to its share of the calendar, about 8.2 percent.
Pisces falls in the late winter dip. February and March both run below the yearly norm. So Pisces gets a little less than its share of days, 8.08 percent of births against 8.2 percent of the year.
We checked this on two older data sets of daily US births, from 1994 to 2014. Scorpio came out between 8.11 and 8.18 percent. Pisces came out between 8.04 and 8.09 percent. The pair stayed near one couple in 76 each time. The method section at the end has the details.
Why astrologers call this pair a trine
In a chart, the zodiac is a circle of 360 degrees cut into twelve signs of 30 degrees. Astrologers name the link between two signs by how far apart they sit. That link is called an aspect.
| Signs apart | Name of the aspect | How the old books read it. |
|---|---|---|
| Two signs, or 60 degrees | Sextile | Friendly, a door that opens with a push. |
| Three signs, or 90 degrees | Square | Tension, two goals that pull apart. |
| Four signs, or 120 degrees | Trine | Harmony, the same element. |
| Five signs, or 150 degrees | Quincunx | No link at all in the old books. |
| Six signs, or 180 degrees | Opposition | Face to face, a mirror. |
Count from Scorpio: Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. That is four signs, so Pisces and Scorpio form a trine. The third water sign, Cancer, closes the triangle. Astrologers call such a group of three a triplicity.
On the Cancer side, our page on Cancer and Pisces compatibility shows why Jupiter is strong in both of those signs.
In the second century, the Greek writer Claudius Ptolemy explained the trine in his book, the Tetrabiblos. Signs in trine share the same gender in his scheme. Scorpio and Pisces are both feminine, or night, signs. For Ptolemy that sameness is the source of their harmony.
A trine is not the same as a match made in heaven. Ptolemy wrote about how planets relate inside one chart. Matching two people by Sun sign came much later. It grew in the 20th century, through newspaper columns and books such as Love Signs by Linda Goodman, from 1978.
Two rulers each: Mars and Jupiter, Pluto and Neptune
Every sign has a ruling planet, a kind of landlord for that part of the sky. Before the telescope, astrologers knew seven planets, counting the Sun and Moon. The Sun and Moon took one sign each. The five others took two signs each.
In that old system, Scorpio belongs to Mars and Pisces belongs to Jupiter. You will find this in Ptolemy and again in the work of William Lilly, the English astrologer who wrote Christian Astrology in 1647.
Then new planets turned up. Neptune was found in 1846, and later astrologers gave it Pisces. Pluto was found in 1930, and in the decades after, it was given Scorpio. These are the modern rulers. Many astrologers today read both, the old ruler first and the new one as a second voice. Our guide to why two astrologies disagree about who rules Scorpio covers that debate in full.
What does this mean for the pair? In the old reading, Scorpio carries the drive of Mars: focus, will and a sharp edge. Pisces carries the reach of Jupiter: faith, room and a wide heart. In the modern reading, Pluto adds depth and change to Scorpio, and Neptune adds dreams and blur to Pisces.
There is one more link. The water triplicity has its own rulers. In the Greek system of Dorotheus, Venus rules water by day and Mars by night. Lilly gives the water signs to Mars, day and night alike. So Mars, the Scorpio ruler, has a voice in Pisces too, as a ruler of its element.
The old books add two notes about honor. Venus is exalted in Pisces, which means she is at her best there, like an honored guest. The Moon is in her fall in Scorpio, which means she is at her weakest there. These notes describe the signs, not the people born in them.
Do Pisces and Scorpio see each other?
You will read that Pisces and Scorpio are signs that see each other. The answer depends on how you count, whole signs or exact degrees.
Ptolemy does list signs that behold each other. They are pairs that sit at the same distance from the same solstice point. When the Sun stands in either one, days have the same length. Later astrologers call the matching points antiscia, a Greek word for shadows.
We tested this with the Sun’s height above or below the sky’s equator, which sets day length. At 15 degrees Scorpio the Sun sits 16.3 degrees south. At 15 degrees Pisces it sits only 5.9 degrees south. Those days are not the same length.
So degree by degree, the shadow partner of Scorpio is Aquarius, also at 16.3 degrees south, and the shadow partner of Pisces is Libra, at 5.9 degrees south. William Lilly’s table of antiscia, in 1647, pairs the signs the same way. Counted in whole signs, the older habit, the answer changes: the notes to the Robbins translation of Ptolemy list Pisces and Scorpio as a pair that sees each other. Both readings are in the books. Pisces and Scorpio surely share an element and a trine.
The mirror across the spring point, which Lilly calls a contra-antiscion, ties Pisces to Aries instead, as our page on Pisces and Aries compatibility explains.
What ten million marriages showed
In 2007, David Voas of the University of Manchester tested love signs on a huge scale. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales. It listed the birth dates of 10,317,649 married couples.
If Sun signs shaped who marries whom, some pairs would show up more than chance predicts. Water and water should beat water and fire. Voas found no such pattern. His conclusion was plain: a person’s sign has no effect on the odds of marrying, and staying married to, someone of any other sign.
His first count did show extra same sign couples. He traced them to form errors, such as one birthday written down for both people. Once he took those out, the pattern was what chance alone would give. His paper later ran in the Skeptical Inquirer in 2008.
This is why our one in 76 figure works. We could treat the two signs as unrelated because the best data says they are. It is also why this page treats the trine as a language, not a promise.
Of the 12 trine pairs, the rarest in US births is an earth pair, as our page on Taurus and Capricorn compatibility shows.
How astrologers describe the bond
Here is the reading the tradition offers, for readers who use astrology as a lens. It is a way to name patterns, not a rule for any real couple.
Stephen Arroyo, in his 1975 book Astrology, Psychology, and the Four Elements, calls water the element of feeling. Water signs take in the mood of a room before anyone speaks. Two water Suns share that radar. Each one feels understood without long talks.
The fixed and mutable split shapes the rest. Scorpio wants to know where things stand and to hold that ground. Pisces wants to keep things open and to flow around a block. In a calm season, this looks like a rock and a stream that fit. Under stress, it looks like a grip on one side and a slip away on the other.
Astrologers point to three places where the pair gets stuck:
- Scorpio wants the full truth, and Pisces wants a soft way to say it.
- Scorpio keeps score of old hurts, and Pisces lets them go, or seems to.
- Both feel a lot and say a little, so small hurts can sit unspoken.
None of this comes from the Sun alone. A full chart holds ten planets and more. The Sun sign is only the first layer.
Check your dates before you check the match
A Sun sign depends on the minute the Sun crossed into it, and that minute moves each year. If you were born near a sign change, the usual date table can be wrong for you.
| Year | Sun enters Pisces, New York time | Sun enters Scorpio, New York time. |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | February 18 at 11:13 p.m. | October 22 at 6:14 p.m. |
| 2025 | February 18 at 5:06 a.m. | October 22 at 11:51 p.m. |
| 2026 | February 18 at 10:51 a.m. | October 23 at 5:38 a.m. |
| 2027 | February 18 at 4:33 p.m. | October 23 at 11:32 a.m. |
So a baby born on February 18, 2026 after 10:51 a.m. in New York is a Pisces, even though most tables start Pisces on the 19th. Out west the times run three hours earlier. For the full list by year, see our Pisces sign guide and our Scorpio sign guide. For all twelve signs at once, start with our guide to the zodiac signs and their real dates.
Beyond the Sun: the Moon and Venus
Identity is one layer and emotional reflex another. The Moon shows how you react and what makes you feel safe. Venus shows what you find lovely and how you court. A Pisces Sun can have a Moon in Aries, and a Scorpio Sun can have Venus in Libra.
That is why we treat each layer on its own page. Read Pisces and Scorpio read through the Moon for the emotional layer. Read Pisces and Scorpio through Venus for the layer of taste and romance.
Questions people ask about Pisces and Scorpio
Are Pisces and Scorpio soulmates?
Astrology cannot tell you that. The tradition calls this pair a trine, its easiest link between two signs. But a census of over ten million couples found no effect of Sun signs on who marries or stays married.
What is the Pisces and Scorpio compatibility percentage?
Scores like 85 or 92 percent are made up by each website. The one real percentage we can measure is how common the pair is. In US births of 2024, 1.32 percent of random couples would be a Pisces and a Scorpio.
Is a Pisces man and Scorpio woman different from a Scorpio man and Pisces woman?
Not in the Sun sign rules. The old books do not change the trine by gender. The real differences come from the rest of each chart, such as the Moon, Venus and Mars.
Who rules Pisces and Scorpio?
In the old system, Jupiter rules Pisces and Mars rules Scorpio. In the modern system, Neptune rules Pisces and Pluto rules Scorpio. Many astrologers read both.
Why is it called a trine?
The two signs sit four signs, or 120 degrees, apart. That is one third of the circle. Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer form a triangle of water signs.
How we counted
Route one used the 2024 US birth file from the CDC. For privacy, the public file gives the month, the day of the week and the clock time of each birth, but not the date. So we spread each birth evenly over the dates in that month that fall on the same weekday. We then read the local time in the four main US time zones, weighted by their share of the population. We turned each moment into a Sun sign with the exact entry times of 2024.
Route two used real daily counts. One set covers 1994 to 2003 from the CDC. The other covers 2000 to 2014 from the Social Security Administration. Both were published by the news site FiveThirtyEight. There we used each true date and the entry times of each year.
We found the entry times with the open source Astronomy Engine library. We checked them with a second method, the solar formula in Jean Meeus’s textbook Astronomical Algorithms. The two agree within about ten minutes. The three birth routes agree within a tenth of a point for both signs.
Limits: our time zone mix is an estimate. Holidays move births in route one, which cannot see single dates. Since the three routes agree, neither limit moves Scorpio or Pisces by more than a tenth of a point.
