Scorpio sign symbol, the eighth zodiac sign, ruled by Mars and Pluto

Scorpio Sign: The Printed Dates Miss October 23 in 43% of Years, New York Time

Google will tell you that the Scorpio sign runs from October 23 to November 21. Every big site prints that same pair of dates. I checked it against the real position of the Sun for 33,238 days in a row, from 1940 to 2030, reading the clock in Universal Time (UTC), the world clock set at Greenwich. In UTC, both of those dates are wrong close to half the time. On New York time the errors shrink, but October 23 is still wrong in 43 percent of years.

That is not a quibble. If you were born on October 23, the common table calls you a Scorpio. In 54 of the 91 years I checked, you were a Libra at noon UTC. That is 59 percent. More than half. At noon New York time, it is 39 years, or 43 percent.

If that is your birthday, our page on what the Libra sign really covers walks through the same count from the other side.

Of the twelve signs, Scorpio is the one this rounding damages most. This guide starts there, then gives you the traits, the ruling planets and the dates that hold up. Our wider guide to all twelve zodiac signs sets out the same method across the whole year. This page goes deep on one sign.

Scorpio dates: what the table says and what the sky says

The Sun does not move by the calendar. It crosses into a new sign at a clock moment, and that moment shifts from year to year. So a fixed border is a rounding, and the rounding lands badly here.

I ran the ingress moment for every year from 1940 to 2030. The ingress is the exact second the Sun crosses into a sign. Here is where the start of Scorpio actually fell, in UTC and on New York clocks.

Calendar date the Sun entered ScorpioYears out of 91, in UTCYears out of 91, in New York
October 224 years in UTC12 years in New York.
October 2375 years in UTC74 years in New York.
October 2412 years in UTC5 years in New York.

Three different calendar dates. In the twelve UTC years that start on October 24, the table names the wrong sign for everyone born on October 23. On New York time there are five such years. In most other years, the answer turns on the birth hour.

The far end behaves the same way. In UTC, the Sun left Scorpio on November 21 in 7 years, on November 22 in 77 years, and on November 23 in 7 years. On New York clocks the counts are 20, 70 and 1.

So the honest Scorpio range is this: the Sun enters on October 22, 23 or 24, and leaves on November 21, 22 or 23.

Born on October 23 or November 22? Read this part first

Two birth dates carry almost all of the damage. Here is how the common table performs on each, across those 91 years.

Birth date in questionSign the common table gives youSign you were really born under, most yearsShare of the 91 years the table gets it wrong, at noon
October 23ScorpioLibra54 years in UTC, or 59 percent. In New York, 39 years, or 43 percent.
November 22SagittariusScorpio44 years in UTC, or 48 percent. In New York, 24 years, or 26 percent.

Read those two rows together. In UTC, the table gives Scorpio a day that belongs to Libra in most years, and takes away a day that belongs to Scorpio in almost half of them. Both borders of this sign are a coin toss. On New York time the odds are better, but still poor.

No other sign has two edges this bad. I added up the error on each sign’s two borders. In UTC, Scorpio scores 98 wrong years. Libra is next at 74, then Gemini at 73. Cancer scores 61 and Leo only 37. On New York time Scorpio scores 63, and it still leads by a clear margin.

There is no such thing as being half Libra and half Scorpio. The Sun sat in one sign at the minute you were born. To settle it you need the hour and the place of your birth, and then the answer is exact.

What the Scorpio sign means, in one short block

Here is the frame the rest of this page builds on.

Element that the Scorpio sign belongs toWater, which the tradition ties to feeling and to privacy.
Modality, meaning how the sign handles changeFixed, which reads as holding a course rather than starting or ending one.
Position in the order of the zodiacEighth of twelve.
Stretch of sky the sign covers210 to 240 degrees of ecliptic longitude.
Ruling planets, old and modernMars in the old scheme, Pluto since 1930.
Season in the northern half of the worldThe middle of autumn.

Two of those rows have their own guides here: the water element and the fixed modality.

Scorpio has two ruling planets, and that is a date rather than a debate

A ruling planet is the body the tradition puts in charge of a sign. Scorpio is the sign where people get this wrong, because it has two, and they come from different centuries.

The old ruler is Mars. Claudius Ptolemy, writing the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD, gives Mars charge of both Aries and Scorpio. Vettius Valens works the same pairing through the case charts in his Anthology. William Lilly still prints it in Christian Astrology in 1647. For roughly eighteen centuries, Scorpio was a Mars sign and nothing else.

Every other planet is a guest in this Mars sign, and Jupiter in Scorpio is one case: it holds no major rank there.

Pluto was discovered in 1930. Astrologers handed Scorpio to it within a few years. That is the whole story. The modern rulership is younger than the telephone.

Neither reading is a fraud, and they do different jobs. The Mars reading is about drive, appetite and the willingness to go at something hard. The Pluto reading is about what gets stripped away and what survives it. Writers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo built the modern psychological version on that second idea.

My advice is simple. Read both. If you only want one, the older Mars rulership has eighteen centuries of written use behind it, and it is the one that connects to a real, fast-moving body in your chart.

Scorpio is one of the shortest seasons of the twelve

The twelve signs are equal slices of sky. They are not equal slices of time. Earth’s orbit is an ellipse, so our planet runs faster when it is closer to the Sun and slower when it is further away. The Sun then appears to cross some signs quickly and others slowly.

I measured the gap between each ingress and the next, for every year from 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window, by two separate routes, astronomy-engine and the Swiss Ephemeris. Here is where Scorpio lands.

Rank from shortest solar season to longestName of the zodiac signMean length of the season in daysShare of the whole year
1Capricorn29.4468.062 percent.
2Sagittarius29.5578.092 percent.
3Aquarius29.5928.102 percent.
4Scorpio29.8998.186 percent.
5Pisces29.9618.203 percent.
6Libra30.3898.320 percent.
7Aries30.4628.340 percent.
8Virgo30.9008.460 percent.
9Taurus30.9648.478 percent.
10Leo31.2928.567 percent.
11Gemini31.3308.578 percent.
12Cancer31.4518.611 percent.

Scorpio season runs 29.899 days on average. That is the fourth shortest of the twelve. It is a day and a half shorter than Cancer at the other end.

Two checks on that table. The twelve lengths add to 365.243 days, which is the tropical year to within a minute. And the two routes agree on every row to within a ten-thousandth of a day.

So there are fewer Scorpios in the world than there are Cancers. The gap is small, just over 5 percent, but it is real and it is not chance.

Where Mercury, Venus and Mars sit when the Sun is in Scorpio

This is the part no competing page prints, and it is the part you can check.

Mercury and Venus orbit closer to the Sun than we do. From Earth, neither one ever wanders far from it. Mercury stays inside a window of about 28 degrees on either side. Venus stays inside about 47 degrees. That is why you see Venus just after sunset or just before sunrise, and never at midnight.

Now do the arithmetic. The Sun crosses 30 degrees of Scorpio. Add Mercury’s narrow window to each end, and Mercury is locked into a short stretch of sky. Only three signs fall inside it. The other nine are not rare. They are impossible.

Here is how the Scorpio season splits, measured across every year from 1600 to 2400.

Sign that Mercury can occupy for a Scorpio SunPlain way to say itShare of Scorpio Suns, 1600 to 2400
Mercury in ScorpioMore than half of all Scorpios56.9 percent.
Mercury in SagittariusMore than one Scorpio in four27.1 percent.
Mercury in LibraAbout one Scorpio in six16.0 percent.
The nine other signs, added togetherNever, in any year0 percent.

Nine signs at a flat zero. Mercury in Aries for a Scorpio Sun does not exist. Neither does Mercury in Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Taurus or Gemini. The widest Sun to Mercury gap I found with the Sun in Scorpio, from 1600 to 2400, was 24.6 degrees, which is where the orbit says it should be.

Mercury is the body the tradition ties to how a person thinks and speaks. So a Scorpio has one of three thinking styles, and the date of birth alone narrows it. Mercury in Scorpio, for 57 in every 100, means the mind digs and withholds. Mercury in Sagittarius, for 27, means it reaches out and says more. Mercury in Libra, for 16, means it weighs both sides before it commits.

Venus does the same trick with a wider window. Five signs are possible and seven score zero.

Sign that Venus can occupy for a Scorpio SunPlain way to say itShare of Scorpio Suns, 1600 to 2400
Venus in SagittariusClose to three Scorpios in ten29.3 percent.
Venus in LibraClose to three Scorpios in ten28.8 percent.
Venus in ScorpioA little under one Scorpio in four23.3 percent.
Venus in CapricornAbout one Scorpio in eleven9.4 percent.
Venus in VirgoAbout one Scorpio in eleven9.2 percent.
The seven other signs, added togetherNever, in any year0 percent.

Venus in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Aquarius and Pisces cannot happen for a Scorpio Sun. Venus is the body the tradition ties to how a person loves. So your Scorpio loves in one of five styles, and no others are on the menu.

One note on that Venus table. Venus repeats its pattern against Earth on an eight year beat, so a short run of years does not sample it evenly. A sixty year window even put Venus in Scorpio first. That is why I measured across eight centuries, which hold a hundred of those cycles. On that long window, Sagittarius and Libra lead at close to 29 percent each, and Scorpio comes third at 23.3 percent. Sagittarius and Libra sit half a point apart, so read them as level. The zero signs are the hard fact here, and no window moves them.

Mars is outside our orbit, so it is free to sit anywhere. All twelve signs turn up. Across 1600 to 2400, the common end is Libra at 15.0 percent and Scorpio at 14.2 percent. So about one Scorpio in seven has Mars, the old ruler, at home in its own sign. The rare end is Taurus at 2.5 percent, Aries at 2.8 percent and Gemini at 3.3 percent. A Scorpio with Mars in Taurus is a genuinely unusual chart.

Nearly one Scorpio in ten also has Scorpio rising

Your rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the slice of zodiac climbing over the horizon at the moment of your birth. It needs your birth hour. It moves one degree every four minutes.

People expect the answer here to be one in twelve, which is 8.3 percent. It is higher. Among US births with a Scorpio Sun, it comes out at 9.8 percent, so close to one in ten.

The reason has nothing to do with Scorpio being special. Signs do not all rise at the same speed from the latitudes where most people live. Scorpio is a slow riser in the northern half of the world, so it spends longer on the horizon and catches more births.

Now compare it with everyone. Scorpio rising accounts for 10.3 percent of all US births, whatever the Sun is doing. So a Scorpio Sun gives you no extra push toward a Scorpio ascendant. It makes one slightly less likely. Scorpio rising with a Scorpio Sun means a birth close to sunrise, and between 3 and 7 a.m. US births run about a quarter below the hourly average. With births spread evenly over the clock, the two figures match, at 10.4 against 10.4 percent.

I will be straight about the precision. Two separate calculations agree to within 0.1 point. The larger unknown is the hospital clock, which I took from a single year, 2024. Read it as close to one in ten and not as an exact number. Our guide to the ascendant and your rising sign covers what it changes in a reading.

Scorpio traits, read from the tradition rather than from a list of adjectives

Here is the picture this site uses. A birth chart is a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one area of life: money, work, love, home. The planets are the furniture. Wherever a planet sits, it furnishes that room.

The eighth room is the one the tradition hands to Scorpio. It covers what two people share rather than what one person owns: joint money, debts, inheritance, sex, and the endings that come whether you choose them or not. The eighth house has its own guide here.

That is the source of every Scorpio trait you have read. Work it forward and the list stops being a set of adjectives.

Scorpio trait as it is usually namedWhere the tradition gets it from
Private, hard to readWater plus a fixed modality. Feeling that holds its position rather than moving on.
Intense about one thing at a timeThe fixed modality again. Fixed signs hold a course. They do not scatter.
Drawn to what is hiddenThe eighth room. Shared money and shared bodies are the two things people hide most.
Willing to go at something hardMars, the old ruler. Appetite and the nerve to act on it.
Changed by a crisis rather than broken by onePluto, the modern ruler, read as what survives being stripped back.
Slow to trust, then fixed once givenFixed water. Slow to commit, slow to move after.
Holds a grudgeThe same fixity, pointed the wrong way. It is the cost of the loyalty.

Notice that the last two rows come from one cause. The loyalty and the grudge are the same trait seen from two sides. Any page that sells you one as a strength and the other as a flaw has not read the structure.

Two longer portraits sit alongside this page: the Scorpio man and the Scorpio woman.

Scorpio compatibility, without the scoreboard

The Sun sign answer is the weak one, so take it first and quickly. The tradition pairs Scorpio best with the other water signs, Cancer and Pisces, and with Capricorn and Virgo for steadiness. It flags Leo and Aquarius as the hard ones, because two fixed signs at right angles both dig in and neither moves.

Now the stronger answer, and this is where my counts earn their place. For any Scorpio you meet, Venus sits in one of five signs and Mercury in one of three. That is fifteen combinations in total. Those two placements do far more work in a real relationship than the Sun does, and both come from the birth date alone.

A Scorpio with Venus in Sagittarius wants room and honesty. A Scorpio with Venus in Capricorn wants proof and a plan. Same Sun sign. Different person to live with. Sun sign compatibility lists cannot see that difference, which is why they keep contradicting each other.

How I measured all of this

Here is the method, so you can check it rather than trust me.

For the dates, I used an ephemeris. An ephemeris is a table of where each body in the sky sits at a given moment, worked out from the laws of motion. I asked it for the Sun’s position once a day for every day from 1940 to 2030. That is 33,238 days. I then compared each answer to the printed table and counted the days where the two disagree.

For the exact ingress moments, I narrowed each crossing down to the second by halving the interval over and over.

For the planet counts, I did not draw charts at random. I stepped through time every three hours, from 1600 to 2400, and read the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars at each step. I kept the moments with the Sun in Scorpio and counted where each planet sat. A second, separate ephemeris, stepping every two hours, gave the same shares to within a tenth of a point. I used the tropical zodiac, the one Western astrology uses, which ties the signs to the equinox rather than to the star patterns.

For the rising sign, I used US births. Places were weighted by population, with their real time zones and daylight saving time, because the ascendant depends on place and clock. Birth hours came from the CDC’s 2024 national birth records, month by month and weekday by weekday. I read the Sun and the horizon every ten minutes of the clock, on every day from 1940 to 2030. A second run with Swiss Ephemeris, on a regular spread of days, gave the same shares to within 0.1 point.

Every set of percentages in this article adds to 100. The planet shares use eight centuries on purpose. A sixty year window moved the order of the top three Venus signs, and the long window settles it.

One last point of honesty. Astrology is not a science, and I will not dress it as one. What I have measured here is the astronomy underneath it, which is exact. What the tradition reads into those positions is a symbolic language with a long written record, and that is a different kind of claim.

Frequently asked questions about the Scorpio sign

What are the real Scorpio dates?

The Sun enters Scorpio on October 22, 23 or 24 depending on the year, and leaves on November 21, 22 or 23. The fixed range of October 23 to November 21 that most sites print is a rounding. At noon on October 23, it names the wrong sign in 59 percent of years in UTC, and in 43 percent at noon New York time.

What is the Scorpio sign personality?

Fixed water. Private, slow to trust, and hard to move once committed. The tradition reads Scorpio through the eighth house, which covers shared money, shared bodies and endings. That is where the reputation for depth and secrecy comes from.

What planet rules Scorpio?

Two of them, from two different eras. Mars has ruled Scorpio since Ptolemy set it down around 150 AD. Pluto was added after its discovery in 1930. Both readings are in use, and they answer different questions.

Is Scorpio a water sign or a fire sign?

Water. The confusion comes from the intensity people associate with Scorpio, which reads like fire. The element is water, and the heat comes from Mars, its ruling planet, rather than from the element.

Who is a Scorpio most compatible with?

By Sun sign alone, the tradition points to Cancer, Pisces, Capricorn and Virgo, and flags Leo and Aquarius as difficult. The better answer comes from Venus, which for a Scorpio Sun can only be in Scorpio, Sagittarius, Libra, Capricorn or Virgo. That placement shapes how they love far more than the Sun does.

Can a Scorpio have Venus in Taurus?

No. It is impossible, not rare. Venus never sits more than about 47 degrees from the Sun as seen from Earth, and Taurus is far outside that window from Scorpio. The same rules out Venus in Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Aquarius and Pisces.

I was born on November 22. Am I a Scorpio or a Sagittarius?

You need your birth hour to know. Across the 91 years I checked, someone born at noon UTC on November 22 was still a Scorpio in 44 of them, or 48 percent. At noon New York time, it is 24 years, or 26 percent. The common table calls you a Sagittarius, and gets it wrong in one year out of four to one out of two.

Our guide to the Sagittarius sign counts that same November 22 edge from the other side.

Why is my Scorpio friend nothing like the description?

Because the Sun is one body out of ten that a full reading uses. Knowing the Sun sign tells you which room holds one chair. It says nothing about the other nine pieces of furniture, and nothing about which room the front door opens into. That last one is the rising sign, and it needs the birth hour.
