Cancer and Scorpio Compatibility: 1 Cancer in 7 Carries Mars in Fall

Cancer and Scorpio compatibility starts with a gentle picture. Both are water signs, and they sit four signs apart. Astrologers call that link a trine and read it as an easy bond. But the old rulebooks hide a knot inside this trine. Each sign is the place where the other sign’s ruling planet is at its weakest. The Moon rules Cancer and is weak in Scorpio. Mars rules Scorpio and is weak in Cancer.

This page follows that thread. I checked it in the old texts. I measured how many real charts carry it. And I counted how common a Cancer and Scorpio couple is in the US. The headline: about one Cancer in seven is born with Mars, the Scorpio ruler, standing in Cancer, its weakest sign.

Start with what no one can promise

Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Sun sign predicts whether a couple will last. The largest test I know of was run in 2007 by David Voas, a researcher at the University of Manchester. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales. It held the birth dates of 10.3 million married couples.

Voas found no sign pair that married more than chance would allow. He found no pair that stayed together longer either. His first count did show extra couples with the same sign. He traced them to form errors, such as one birthday copied into both boxes. His work later ran in the Skeptical Inquirer, in March 2008.

So this page gives no score to the match. It treats the pairing as a lens for two people, not a forecast. The lens can still help. It gives partners words for how each one works. It points to places where they can miss each other. The stars do not decide the outcome. The two people do.

How common is a Cancer and Scorpio couple in the US?

A sign is not one twelfth of the year. The Sun spends about 31.5 days in Cancer, the longest stay of the year, as our Cancer sign page shows. It spends about 29.9 days in Scorpio. US births are not flat through the year either. They peak in late summer.

So we counted real births. The reference file holds daily Social Security counts for 2000 to 2014, about 62.2 million US births. Each day was matched to the exact minute the Sun changed sign. A second file, from the National Center for Health Statistics for 1994 to 2003, gives the same picture.

Sun signShare of US births, 2000 to 2014Rank among the twelve signs.
Cancer8.84 percentThird, behind Leo and Virgo.
Scorpio8.18 percentSeventh of twelve.
An even split8.33 percentOne birth in twelve, for comparison.

Now pick two people at random. The chance that one is a Cancer and the other a Scorpio is two times 8.84 percent times 8.18 percent. That gives 1.45 percent, or about one couple in 69. An even split would give one in 72, so the real pair is a little more common than the usual math says. Cancer carries it, thanks to its long season in the busy summer months.

This sum treats the two signs in a couple as unrelated. That is not a guess. It is what Voas found in ten million marriages.

A trine by sign, and a trine by degree

The zodiac is a circle of 360 degrees, cut into twelve signs of 30 degrees. Count from Cancer: Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio. That is four signs, or 120 degrees. Astrologers call this angle a trine. Pisces closes the triangle as the third water sign. Our page on Pisces and Scorpio, the other water trine with Scorpio covers that side of the triangle.

A trine by sign is not always a trine by degree. A Cancer born on June 21 and a Scorpio born on November 21 have Suns about 150 degrees apart. Most astrologers count an aspect only when the angle is close to exact. The margin they allow is called the orb. A common modern orb for a trine is about 6 degrees.

Margin around 120 degreesShare of Cancer and Scorpio pairs inside it.
Within 1 degreeAbout 7 percent of pairs.
Within 3 degreesAbout 19 percent of pairs.
Within 6 degreesAbout 36 percent of pairs.
Within 10 degreesAbout 56 percent of pairs.

So only about one Cancer and Scorpio pair in three has Suns in a true trine at a 6 degree orb. The rest share the sign link but not the tight angle. These shares are the same for any two signs set a whole number of signs apart. They come from the geometry, not from Cancer or Scorpio.

Two rulers, one element

Every sign has a ruling planet, a kind of landlord for that slice of sky. In the old system, the Moon rules Cancer and Mars rules Scorpio. William Lilly still gives them these rulers in Christian Astrology, from 1647. Modern astrologers added Pluto as a second ruler of Scorpio after 1930. This page follows the old rulers, since the knot lives there.

The elements have rulers too. In the Tetrabiblos, from the second century, Claudius Ptolemy hands the water triangle to Mars. He says Mars earns it through his house, Scorpio. He then names two partners for Mars: the Moon by night and Venus by day. So the two rulers of this couple share the job of running water itself. Lilly, writing much later, gives the water signs to Mars by day and by night.

That is the first half of the story. The Moon and Mars are co-rulers of the same element. They work the same field.

The crossed falls: each ruler is weak in the other sign

The old books also give each planet a sign of honor and a sign of weakness. The sign of honor is called the exaltation. There the planet acts like an honored guest. The sign straight across the wheel is called the fall. There the planet is at its lowest and works against the grain.

Ptolemy explains two of these rules in the same chapter. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, where she shows her first light in spring. So her fall is Scorpio, the sign across from Taurus. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, where he stands farthest south and runs hottest. So his fall is Cancer, the sign across from Capricorn.

Put the two rules side by side:

  • The Moon rules Cancer and falls in Scorpio.
  • Mars rules Scorpio and falls in Cancer.

Each sign is the weak spot of the other sign’s ruler. I found no other pair of signs where this happens. It is a real feature of the ancient table, not a modern add-on. One more piece fits the picture. Jupiter, the planet of growth, is exalted in Cancer. So Cancer honors the planet of plenty and humbles the planet of force.

Jupiter also rules Pisces, so our page on Cancer and Pisces compatibility follows one planet that is strong in both signs.

A fall is not a curse. It means a planet has to work in a style foreign to it. Mars wants to charge. Cancer wants to shelter. The Moon wants rest and comfort. Scorpio wants to dig until it finds the truth. That clash of styles is the thread of tension inside a soft trine.

How many real charts carry the thread?

The fall is a rule about signs. Your chart holds more than your Sun sign. So I asked a concrete question. Among people born with the Sun in Cancer, how many also have Mars in Cancer? And among Scorpio Suns, where does Mars sit?

I tracked the Sun and Mars every six hours from 1600 to 2400. That is 800 years and over one million moments. For each moment, I noted both signs. The shares below are conditional: they count only people with the given Sun sign.

Born with the Sun inMars in Cancer, its fallMars in Capricorn, its exaltationMars in Scorpio, its home.
Cancer15.14 percent2.21 percent5.06 percent of Cancers.
Scorpio5.45 percent10.14 percent14.21 percent of Scorpios.
Any Sun sign, all of the time9.40 percent7.21 percent8.74 percent of the time.

Three facts stand out.

First, about one Cancer in seven carries Mars in Cancer. That makes the fall the second most common Mars sign for Cancer Suns, just behind Leo at 15.33 percent. The thread is not only a link between two people. It sits inside many Cancer charts.

Second, a Cancer is almost seven times more likely to have Mars in its fall than in its exaltation. Our page on Mars in Cancer, the weakest Mars shows that over all of time, the fall beats the exaltation by 1.3 to 1. Among Cancer Suns, the gap grows to about 6.9 to 1. The two figures answer different questions, and both hold.

Third, Scorpios mostly escape it. Only about one Scorpio in eighteen has Mars in Cancer. A Scorpio is more likely to have Mars exalted in Capricorn, at about one in ten. Our Scorpio sign page lists the 14.21 percent of Scorpios whose Mars is at home.

Why the lopsided shape? Mars lingers near the Sun’s side of the sky. When Mars sits on the far side of the Sun, it moves in step with the Sun for months. So Mars lands in the Sun’s own sign or a neighbor sign far more than chance. Cancer is the Sun’s own sign for Cancers. Capricorn sits across the wheel from it, the one place Mars reaches least.

What the thread means in a reading

Here is how the tradition reads this pair. It is a way to name patterns, not a rule for any couple.

Cancer is a cardinal water sign. Cardinal signs open a season, so Cancer starts things. It starts a home, a meal, a circle of care. Its drive runs through the Moon, which rises and falls with moods. Stephen Arroyo, in his 1975 book on the four elements, calls water the element of feeling. Cancer feels first and acts to protect.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign. Fixed signs hold the middle of a season, so Scorpio holds on. Its drive runs through Mars, which wants a target. Scorpio feels just as much as Cancer, but it turns feeling into focus.

The crossed falls show where the two styles grind. Scorpio’s Mars energy can feel too sharp in Cancer’s world of shelter. A pointed question can land like an attack on the home. Cancer’s Moon energy can feel too shifting in Scorpio’s world of depth. A change of mood can look like a hidden motive.

Astrologers point to three spots where the pair can stall:

  • Cancer retreats into its shell, and Scorpio reads the silence as a secret.
  • Scorpio probes to find the truth, and Cancer hears the probe as blame.
  • Both remember hurts for a long time, so old wounds stay close to the surface.

The trine gives them the shared ground to work it out. Both value loyalty. Both prefer a small, close circle to a big crowd. Both read a room before anyone speaks. In the old picture, the Moon and Mars run the same element. They share a field, even if they plow it in different ways.

If a Cancer partner has Mars in Cancer, astrologers read the thread as doubled. That person carries the same pull between shelter and force inside their own chart. It can help them understand a Scorpio partner. It can also make the friction feel familiar.

What the old books do not say about this pair

Ptolemy lists other kinds of links between signs. Some signs “command” and others “obey.” Some signs “behold” each other. In his notes to the Tetrabiblos, the translator Frank Robbins gives the pairs.

Cancer and Scorpio are in neither list. In Robbins’s list, Cancer commands Capricorn. And Cancer has no partner at all among the signs that behold each other. Robbins says Cancer and Capricorn are left “without mates.”

Our page on Cancer and Capricorn compatibility looks at that odd pair, the two signs of the solstices.

So the whole old case for this couple rests on three links. They share an element. They sit in a trine. And their rulers share the water triangle. The crossed falls sit on top of those links. That is a small point, but it is the true one.

Matching two people by Sun sign is itself a later idea. Ptolemy wrote about how planets relate inside one chart. Sun sign matching grew in the 20th century, through columns and books such as Linda Goodman’s Love Signs, from 1978.

Check your dates before you check the match

A Sun sign depends on the minute the Sun entered it. That minute moves each year. If you were born near a sign change, a printed date table can be wrong for you.

YearSun enters Cancer, New York timeSun enters Scorpio, New York time.
2026June 21 at 4:25 a.m.October 23 at 5:38 a.m.
2027June 21 at 10:10 a.m.October 23 at 11:32 a.m.
2028June 20 at 4:01 p.m.October 22 at 5:13 p.m.

So a baby born in New York on June 20, 2028 after 4:01 p.m. is a Cancer. On the West Coast, the clock reads three hours earlier. For every sign and year, see our guide to the 12 zodiac signs and their real dates.

Look past the Sun

A Sun sign is one point in a chart with ten planets and twelve houses. To read two people well, astrologers compare whole charts. That method is called synastry.

For this pair, the next step is clear. Find each partner’s Moon and Mars. Those are the two rulers in the knot. A Scorpio with the Moon in Cancer, or a Cancer with Mars in Scorpio, shifts the picture.

Then look at Venus, the planet of taste and affection. Astrologers check Venus before they speak about romance, and Cancer and Scorpio Venus placements does that for this combination.

How I measured this

You can redo each number on this page.

For the birth shares, I used the site’s reference file. It holds daily Social Security birth counts for 2000 to 2014, published by FiveThirtyEight. I found each Sun sign change with astronomy-engine, an open source sky library, in the tropical zodiac. I spread each day’s births over its 24 hours in New York time. When the Sun changed sign that day, I split the births by the hours on each side. The Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003 gives Cancer and Scorpio within 0.1 point of the same shares.

For the pair rate, I assumed that partners’ birth dates are not linked, which is what Voas found. The chance of one Cancer and one Scorpio is then two times the Cancer share times the Scorpio share.

For the trine, I took the Sun’s position at each hour of the Social Security years, weighted by births. I built the spread of Cancer degrees and Scorpio degrees and combined them. As a check, a simple formula that treats degrees as flat gives the same shares within 0.3 point.

For Mars, I read the Sun and Mars every six hours from 1600 to 2400. As a second route, I ran a separate grid every seven hours, offset by two and a half hours. Both grids agree within 0.02 point. I also checked fifteen Mars positions, one every 50 years, against JPL Horizons, the NASA ephemeris service. They agree within 0.01 degree. The same run gives Mars in Scorpio for 14.21 percent of Scorpio Suns, matching our Scorpio sign page.

For the sign entry times, I checked astronomy-engine against the solar formula in Jean Meeus’s book Astronomical Algorithms. The two agree within about six minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cancer and Scorpio compatible?

Astrology reads them as a trine, one of its easiest links. They share water, and their rulers share the water triangle in Ptolemy’s scheme. No study has shown that this or any sign pair lasts longer, so treat it as a lens, not a forecast.

How common is a Cancer and Scorpio couple?

In US birth data from 2000 to 2014, about 1 random pair in 69 is one Cancer and one Scorpio. Cancer ranks third among Sun signs, and Scorpio ranks seventh.

What is the tension between Cancer and Scorpio?

In the old tables, each sign is the fall of the other sign’s ruler. The Moon rules Cancer and falls in Scorpio. Mars rules Scorpio and falls in Cancer. Astrologers read this as a clash between shelter and force.

Is every Cancer and Scorpio pair a real trine?

By sign, yes. By degree, no. With a 6 degree orb, only about 36 percent of pairs have Suns in a true trine.

How many Cancers have Mars in Cancer?

About 15 percent, or one Cancer in seven, over 1600 to 2400. Only about 2 percent have Mars exalted in Capricorn.
