Cancer Venus and Sagittarius Venus Compatibility: No Aspect, Yet Cancer Commands by Degree

Cancer Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility starts with an odd angle. The two signs sit five signs apart, a gap of 150 degrees called a quincunx. Ptolemy did not count that gap as an aspect at all. Yet one reading of his rules ties these two signs together in another way. Counted by exact degree, Cancer commands and Sagittarius obeys. Only one other quincunx in the zodiac carries that tie. Counted by whole signs, as his translator Frank Robbins lists the pairs, the tie goes to Cancer and Capricorn instead.

This page explains that rule in plain words and then checks the sky. You will see how common each Venus is, which Sun signs come with it, and in how many couples the old tie holds by exact degree. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.

Two Venus signs, one odd angle

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you, what you value and how you show care. It is not the Sun sign from your horoscope. This page is about a couple where one partner has Venus in Cancer and the other has Venus in Sagittarius.

Cancer is the fourth sign and Sagittarius the ninth. Count the short way round and you get five signs. That makes a quincunx. Ptolemy listed four aspects in the Tetrabiblos: the sextile, the square, the trine and the opposition. A quincunx is none of them. Later astrologers added it as a minor angle of strain.

The elements do not match either. Cancer is water, the element of feeling and memory. Sagittarius is fire, the element of drive and faith. Cancer is a cardinal sign, one that opens a season, here summer. Sagittarius is a mutable sign, one that closes a season, here autumn. Among the 78 Venus pairs, no other quincunx joins a cardinal water sign to a mutable fire sign.

A word on evidence

Before any chart talk, here is the evidence. The sociologist David Voas tested zodiac love signs in a 2007 paper called Ten Million Marriages. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from errors in the data.

Voas tested Sun signs, not Venus signs. We know of no test of that size for Venus. So the rest of this page gives two people words for how they love. It cannot tell them whether they will last.

Cancer commands, Sagittarius obeys, by degree

In Book I, chapter 14, Ptolemy sorts some signs into pairs. Draw a line through 0 degrees of Aries, the spring point, and 0 degrees of Libra, the autumn point. Signs at the same distance from that line form a pair. They rise over the horizon in equal spans of time. They also lie on equal parallels, the same distance north and south of the equator.

Cancer runs from 90 to 120 degrees after the spring point. Sagittarius runs from 90 to 120 degrees before it. So, degree for degree, they mirror each other. Ptolemy calls the sign on the summer side the one that commands. He calls the sign on the winter side the one that obeys. That makes Cancer the leader and Sagittarius the follower.

There is a simple way to picture it. The Sun in early Cancer gives the longest days of the year. The Sun in late Sagittarius gives the longest nights. At mirror points, the day in one sign lasts as long as the night in the other. That is the balance behind his rule.

In chapter 16, Ptolemy adds a last group. Signs one or five apart that share none of his ties he calls disjunct, meaning cut off. Our Cancer and Sagittarius pair is five apart. Read by degree, the command tie rescues it, and the couple is linked even with no aspect between them. Read by whole signs, nothing rescues it, and the pair is disjunct.

Quincunx pair Tie in Ptolemy, Book I, read by degree.
Cancer and Sagittarius Cancer commands, Sagittarius obeys.
Gemini and Capricorn Gemini commands, Capricorn obeys.
The other ten quincunxes No command tie of this kind.

By whole sign or by degree

Readers of Ptolemy do not agree on how strict this rule is. Both views are worth knowing.

The first view goes sign by sign. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs this way in his note 80, and there Cancer commands Capricorn, not Sagittarius. On that view, no couple on this page shares the tie.

The second view goes degree by degree. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), works with mirror points across the Aries and Libra line. He calls them contra-antiscia. Venus at 10 degrees of Cancer mirrors 20 degrees of Sagittarius, since the two add up to 30. On that view, only couples whose Venuses sit near those points share the tie.

Mirror across the spring point Share of these couples.
Whole signs, any degree None: Robbins’s note 80 pairs Cancer with Capricorn.
Exact mirror within 3 degrees 19.0 percent, about one in five.
Exact mirror within 1 degree 6.6 percent, about one in 15.

So “does our pair have the tie?” has two answers. By whole sign, no. By degree, yes for about one couple in five at a 3 degree orb. Your two Venus degrees settle which camp you fall in.

How common each Venus is

Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. That loop makes Venus stay longer in some signs than in others. Venus also repeats its path in an eight-year cycle, so a short window can skew the count. We used eight full centuries to smooth it out.

Venus sign Share of all time, 1600 to 2400 Rank out of twelve.
Venus in Cancer 8.62 percent First of the twelve.
Venus in Sagittarius 8.23 percent Ninth of the twelve.
Least common: Venus in Capricorn 8.04 percent Last of the twelve.

Cancer leads only by a hair. Neither Venus here is rare.

Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Cancer and the other Venus in Sagittarius? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.42 percent, or one couple in 71. That ranks 17th of the 78 Venus pairs.

The Sun signs behind each Venus

Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.

Venus sign Sun signs it allows, with their share.
Venus in Cancer Leo 29.7, Gemini 29.3, Cancer 24.1, Virgo 8.7 and Taurus 8.3 percent.
Venus in Sagittarius Scorpio 29.2, Capricorn 28.6, Sagittarius 23.5, Libra 9.5 and Aquarius 9.3 percent.

The two lists have no sign in common. So these two partners can never share a Sun sign. Every couple on this page has two different Suns.

The likeliest Sun pair is a Leo Sun with a Scorpio Sun, at 8.66 percent of these couples. Close behind come Gemini with Scorpio, at 8.56 percent, and Leo with Capricorn, at 8.48 percent. No single pair reaches one couple in ten. Treat these as a lean, not a rule.

We also sorted the couples by the angle between their two Suns. The quincunx leads, at 36.8 percent. So more than one couple in three repeats the Venus angle in the Suns. Next come the trine at 24.3 percent and the opposition at 18.9 percent. The square follows at 13.7 percent, then the sextile at 5.3 and next-door Suns at 0.8 percent.

A Cancer and Sagittarius by Sun sign is not this couple

Many readers land here because they are a Cancer and a Sagittarius by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.

A Cancer Sun has Venus in Cancer 24.1 percent of the time. A Sagittarius Sun has Venus in Sagittarius 23.9 percent of the time. Both must hold at once. That happens in about 5.8 percent of Cancer and Sagittarius Sun couples, or one in 17. The Sun pair is a different reading. Our page on Cancer and Sagittarius read through the Sun covers it.

Seen from the Venus side, 41.9 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If you do not know your birth time and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.

Venus in Cancer: a guest of the Moon

The old books rank each planet by the sign it stands in. That rank is called dignity. Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra, and exalted in Pisces. She is in exile in Aries and Scorpio, and falls in Virgo. Cancer holds none of those ranks for her.

Lilly calls a planet with no major rank peregrine, from the Latin word for a traveler. Such a planet takes the tone of its host. Cancer belongs to the Moon. So this Venus loves in the Moon’s way: care, memory, food, home and a safe base. The older table of Dorotheus of Sidon adds a small claim. It gives Venus the water signs in a daytime chart, Cancer included.

Liz Greene and other modern writers read this Venus as love that feeds and shelters. Our guide to Venus in Cancer covers it in full.

Venus in Sagittarius: a guest of Jupiter

Sagittarius belongs to Jupiter. Venus holds no major rank there either, so she is peregrine too. Her host is the great giver of the old books, a friendly host for her. This Venus loves in Jupiter’s way: open, frank, curious and eager to go further.

Stephen Arroyo and others read it as love that needs a shared horizon. A trip, a big idea or a belief held in common feeds it. Our guide to Venus in Sagittarius goes deeper.

So both partners love as guests. One lives in the Moon’s house and one in Jupiter’s. By Ptolemy’s rule, the Moon’s guest leads.

Is the quincunx exact in degrees?

Two Venuses five signs apart can sit anywhere from 120 to 180 degrees apart. The quincunx is exact at 150 degrees. The gap allowed around it is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign.

Orb allowed Couples with an exact quincunx.
Within 3 degrees 19.0 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36.1 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46.3 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 55.7 percent of couples.

These values are close to the same for every Venus pair, so they are not special to this one. The twist is at the edges. With an 8 degree orb, 7.0 percent of these couples form a true trine or a true opposition instead. Say one Venus sits at 29 degrees of Cancer and the other at 1 degree of Sagittarius. The gap is 122 degrees. By sign it is a quincunx. In the sky it is a trine.

How the tradition reads the pair

Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads this match.

  • Home and road. Cancer shows love by making a place to come back to. Sagittarius shows love by asking you along.
  • Lead and follow. By Ptolemy’s rule, Cancer sets the tone. In daily life, that can mean Cancer sets the rhythm of the home.
  • Feeling and faith. Water wants to be felt. Fire wants to be believed. Each partner can say which one they need that day.
  • Honesty. Sagittarius prizes the frank word. Cancer prizes the kind word. The same truth can be said both ways.

Use this reading as a way to talk about closeness and freedom. It is not a verdict on the couple.

How we measured it

We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.

Mirror shares use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs and Sun angles combine each partner’s Sun-sign shares from the table above. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 17.

For the other Venus quincunx that involves Sagittarius, see Taurus Venus and Sagittarius Venus. For a Cancer Venus facing Venus at home in Libra, see Cancer Venus and Libra Venus. The same two signs read through the Moon appear in Cancer Moon and Sagittarius Moon. Every pair is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility.

Questions about Cancer and Sagittarius Venus

Are Venus in Cancer and Venus in Sagittarius compatible?

By sign they form a quincunx, which is not one of Ptolemy’s aspects. Read by exact degree, his rule still links them: Cancer commands and Sagittarius obeys. Read by whole signs, it does not. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

Does the command tie apply to every couple?

No. By whole sign, it applies to no couple, since Robbins’s note 80 pairs Cancer with Capricorn. By exact degree, as Lilly reads mirror points, it holds within 3 degrees for 19 percent of these couples, and within 1 degree for 6.6 percent.

Can a Venus in Cancer and a Venus in Sagittarius share a Sun sign?

No. Venus in Cancer allows Taurus to Virgo Suns, and Venus in Sagittarius allows Libra to Aquarius Suns. The two lists never meet.

What Sun signs does this couple have most?

A Leo Sun with a Scorpio Sun, in 8.66 percent of these couples. Gemini with Scorpio and Leo with Capricorn come close behind.

How common is a Cancer Venus and Sagittarius Venus couple?

Over 1600 to 2400, about 1.42 percent of random couples, or one in 71. It ranks 17th of the 78 Venus pairs.
