Venus in Sagittarius has a bad name. Search the placement and the first result is a Reddit thread asking why this Venus is called the unfaithful one. The next wave of answers calls it lucky, giving, and free. Both camps argue from feeling. Neither counts anything.
So we counted. Using the same open orbital maths that powers every modern chart engine, we measured how much time Venus spends in each of the twelve signs from 1600 to 2400. Venus spends 8.23 % of that time in Sagittarius. That puts it ninth of twelve, just under the even share of 8.33 %. The shorter window from 1950 to 2010 tells a different story: there, Sagittarius came last. Both results are true, and one clean physical fact links them.
Venus in Sagittarius is ninth of twelve over 800 years
Here is the full ranking. Each number is the share of the time from 1600 to 2400 that Venus spent in that sign.
- Cancer — 8.62 %
- Taurus — 8.59 %
- Gemini — 8.46 %
- Leo — 8.46 %
- Virgo — 8.41 %
- Libra — 8.32 %
- Pisces — 8.32 %
- Aries — 8.29 %
- Sagittarius — 8.23 %
- Aquarius — 8.16 %
- Scorpio — 8.11 %
- Capricorn — 8.04 %
If each sign held an equal share, each would take 8.33 %. Over this long window, no sign strays far from that line. Cancer, the most common, gets 8.62 %. Capricorn, the rarest, gets 8.04 %. The gap between them is about two days in every year.
How the count was done
The method matters more than the number. A figure no one can repeat is worth nothing.
We tracked the position of Venus hour by hour across the whole 800 years. Each time it crossed a sign border, we pinned the crossing to the second by cutting the gap in half over and over. Astrologers call that crossing an ingress: the moment a planet leaves one sign and enters the next. There were 10,142 of them in the window. We then added up the exact time between crossings.
This is a count, not a sample. There is no margin of error to quote. We then checked it by a second route. A separate engine, the Swiss Ephemeris, read the place of Venus every two hours from 1600 to 2400. It also gave 8.23 % for Sagittarius. The two routes agree to the second decimal for all twelve signs.
Why a sixty-year window misleads
A short window gives a different answer. Counted only from 1950 to 2010, Venus spent 6.92 % of its time in Sagittarius. That was the smallest share of the twelve, just under Libra at 6.98 %. Aries led that window at 10.29 %.
That result belongs to those sixty years. We repeated the count over other spans. From 1930 to 2030, Pisces comes last and this sign sits second from bottom. From 1800 to 2100, Aquarius comes last and this sign sits ninth. Stretch the window to 800 years and the shares close in on 8.33 %, because the pattern behind the gap drifts round the zodiac.
The fair claim, then, is this. Among people born between 1950 and 2010, this Venus was the least common of the twelve, just behind Venus in Libra. About one birth in fourteen and a half carried it. Over 1600 to 2400, about one birth in twelve carries it, and the rarest Venus sign is Capricorn.
Why Sagittarius came last from 1950 to 2010: Venus has not turned back there since 1954
The reason is not mystical. It is speed.
Seen from Earth, planets sometimes appear to slide backwards through the zodiac. That is what retrograde means. Venus does it about once every nineteen months. When it happens, Venus slows to a crawl, reverses, then crawls forward again. It can spend four months in one sign instead of four weeks.
Those slow loops are not spread out evenly. Venus and Earth lock into a rhythm: five loops each eight years, at five spots in the zodiac. Those five spots drift backwards by about two and a half degrees each cycle. For long stretches of history, a given sign gets loop after loop. Then the pattern slides off it, and that sign gets none for a very long time.
We counted the turning points. Astrologers call a turning point a station: the moment a planet stops before changing direction. Between 1950 and 2010, Venus made 76 stations: 38 retrograde, when she stops and turns back, and 38 direct, when she stops and moves on. Aries got 14 of them, 7 of each kind. Scorpio got 13: 6 retrograde, 7 direct. Sagittarius got just one, a retrograde station on 25 October 1954. Libra got none at all. Over 1600 to 2400, the count evens out: Sagittarius gets 84 of Venus’s 1,001 stations.
Then we widened the search. Venus last turned retrograde in Sagittarius on 25 October 1954. It will not move backwards in this sign again until 9 January 2062 (UTC). That winter, Venus turns back in Capricorn and slides into late Sagittarius. It stations direct there on 16 January 2062, then moves forward again. That is a gap of 107 years with no slow loop in this sign.
This is the whole story of the short-window gap. In this era, Venus crosses Sagittarius at full walking pace and leaves. From 1950 to 2010, a passage ran about 25 days on average. The shortest lasted 3.4 days; the longest, 30.8 days. Compare that with Venus in Aries, which a slow loop can hold in place for months.
So the placement ran thin in those years for the plainest possible reason: Venus did not linger here. Until 2062, it is a sign Venus passes through, never a sign Venus camps in. Hold that thought — it says a lot about the sign itself.
Peregrine: Venus has no rank here, and Jupiter is the host
Old astrology grades each planet by the sign it lands in. Five grades exist. A planet in its own sign is at home. Across from its home it is in detriment, which means it works against the grain. One sign lifts it — exaltation — and the sign across from that lowers it, called fall. When none of these apply, the planet is peregrine. The word comes from the Latin for foreigner. The planet is a traveller with no title and no property in that sign.
Venus in Sagittarius is peregrine. Venus owns Taurus and Libra. It is in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, exalted in Pisces, in fall in Virgo. This sign is none of these. Venus lands there with no rank at all.
Paired with an exiled Venus in Aries, that guest forms a fire trine, as Aries Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility explains.
In 1647 the English astrologer William Lilly, writing in Christian Astrology, gave the rule plainly: a planet is peregrine when it stands in degrees of a sign where it has no essential dignity. By that rule, Venus is not peregrine from 8° to 14° of Sagittarius, which are her terms. The label sounds grim. It is half the picture.
The other half: whose house is this?
Each sign has a ruling planet, an owner who sets the house rules. This one belongs to Jupiter, the planet of growth, luck and reach. So Venus lands in a sign where it holds no rank, in the home of the most open-handed owner in the chart.
That mix is the whole story in one line. Venus has no rules of its own here, and the host has few. Jupiter does not narrow things down. Jupiter widens them.
Ptolemy, writing in Alexandria in the second century, set out the sign rulers in his Tetrabiblos. He paired Venus and Jupiter as the two benefics — the two planets Greek astrology counted as helpful. This placement puts one benefic inside the other’s house. Vettius Valens, a working astrologer of the same era whose Anthologies record real client charts, treats Jupiter’s signs as places of foreign travel, teaching and faith. Venus brings desire into that setting.
So the plain reading is this. Venus loses its own footing here and gains a rich host. It cannot lean on the polish of Libra or the steady hunger of Taurus. It borrows Jupiter’s hunger for more instead.
Two such guests of Jupiter make a rare couple, and Venus in Sagittarius and Venus in Sagittarius compatibility shows their Suns match only 1 time in 4.
A Pisces Venus shares that host from across a square, and Sagittarius Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility shows their likeliest Suns sit in Capricorn and Aquarius.
A Virgo Venus squares it from the other side, and Virgo Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility shows that their likeliest Suns are next-door Libra and Scorpio.
A Leo Venus forms a fire trine with it, and Leo Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility shows that Leo commands it only by whole sign.
A Libra Venus sits at a sextile, and Libra Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility shows that matching Suns are Scorpio two times in three.
A Cancer Venus sits five signs away with no aspect between them, yet, read by exact degree, Ptolemy’s rule lets Cancer command, as Cancer Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility shows.
What Venus in Sagittarius actually wants
Modern writers read the same sign through motive rather than rank.
Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols, describes Venus as the function that decides what we find beautiful and what we move toward. Put that job in Jupiter’s sign and the answer becomes: what opens the field. Not the best-made thing. The thing with the most road behind it.
Liz Greene, who brought depth psychology into astrology, would read the Jupiter setting as a hunger for meaning. This Venus does not fall for a person. It falls for what a person makes possible. That is the root of both the charm and the trouble.
Demetra George and Chris Brennan, who rebuilt the old Greek material for modern readers, both stress that peregrine is not a verdict. It marks a planet with no script — free to act, with no backing if things go wrong. A peregrine Venus makes it up as it goes.
Put together, the working portrait looks like this:
- Desire runs on possibility, not on security. A plan for next summer moves this Venus more than a promise about next decade.
- Honesty over smoothness. Venus in Libra edits itself to keep peace. This one says the awkward thing and means well by it.
- Giving without a budget. Jupiter gives. It seldom counts.
- Distance is attractive. A far country, a new tongue, a field of study she knows nothing of. The gap itself is the draw.
- A cage reads as danger. Not the commitment — the walls around it.
The unfaithful charge, answered
The busiest question online is whether this is the cheating sign. The honest answer has two parts.
The old texts never said that. No Greek or medieval source marks this Venus as false. Peregrine means unranked, not unfaithful. The label is modern folklore, built from the sign’s link to travel.
What the sky does say is quieter and more useful. Venus does not slow down in this sign between 1954 and 2062. It has no slow loop here in that span — no built-in pause, no forced second look. A Venus with no reverse gear moves forward by default. Read as character, that is unrest, not treachery. This Venus leaves when a bond stops going anywhere. It seldom leaves for a better offer.
Venus in Sagittarius in a woman’s chart and in a man’s chart
Two of the biggest searches here are for the Sagittarius Venus woman and the Sagittarius Venus man. The split is worth handling with care, because the logic behind it is old and it shows.
Old astrology read Venus two ways. In a woman’s chart it showed her own style of pleasure and taste. In a man’s chart it showed what he was drawn to. Modern work, after Greene and Hand, drops that split. Venus shows how anyone loves and what anyone values.
What holds up in both readings is the same core. A Venus here courts by widening your world. The gift is a plane ticket, a book, an introduction, a question nobody has asked you before. Flattery is not the tool. Zeal is.
The friction is also the same. This Venus states things at full volume and forgets that the volume landed. Warmth arrives fast and can look like a promise it never made.
Style, taste and money
Venus rules taste, so the sign shows in what people wear and buy. Jupiter’s house pushes toward colour, scale and mixture. Loose shapes over cut ones. Things with a story — brought back from a trip, handed down, found. The Venus in Sagittarius wardrobe reads as gathered, not bought in one go.
Money follows Jupiter’s logic too. This Venus spends on the trip over the thing, and on other people over itself. The old logic backs that up: the ruler of the sign is the planet that gives. Nothing here makes it count first.
Which Sun signs can have Venus in Sagittarius
Venus never strays far from the Sun. From Earth it stays within about 47 degrees of it, which is why we only ever see Venus near dawn or dusk. That hard limit means your Sun sign cuts down which Venus signs are open to you.
We counted hour by hour from 1950 to 2010. Among people born in those years with this Venus, the Sun sat in one of five signs:
- Capricorn — 29.1 % of them
- Scorpio — 28.2 %
- Sagittarius — 24.6 %
- Aquarius — 9.9 %
- Libra — 8.2 %
The other seven Sun signs cannot carry this Venus at all. If you were born under Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Pisces, your Venus sits in a different sign. That is maths, not dogma.
Sagittarius and Capricorn are next-door signs that mirror each other across midwinter by exact degree, though not by whole sign, as our guide to the Venus in Sagittarius and Venus in Capricorn couple explains.
Note what tops the list. For people born from 1950 to 2010, the most common home for this Venus is a Capricorn Sun. A careful, walled-in Sun; a roaming, open-handed Venus. That pair narrowly leads, and it explains much of the muddle people report about themselves. Over 1600 to 2400, Scorpio at 29.2 % edges ahead of Capricorn at 28.6 %.
That Capricorn Sun sits at the heart of the Venus in Sagittarius and Venus in Aquarius couple, where nearly half the pairs include one.
Earth is a harder match: the Venus in Taurus and Venus in Sagittarius couple never shares a Sun sign at all.
Air sits straight across the wheel: the Gemini Venus and Sagittarius Venus couple forms an opposition, and its Suns never match either.
Water sits right next door, and Scorpio Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility shows why Ptolemy saw no tie between the two signs.
When Venus is in Sagittarius: exact dates, 2026 to 2029
We all get these passages, whatever our birth chart. When Venus crosses this sign, its themes turn up in daily life: a hunger for travel, loose spending, plain speech.
The first thing to say about 2026 is a surprise. Venus does not enter Sagittarius at all during 2026. Venus takes about 19 months to loop the zodiac from where we stand, so it skips whole years in a given sign. The last passage ran from 30 November to 24 December 2025. The next one waits until 2027.
All times are UTC.
- 7 January to 3 February 2027 — 27.2 days
- 1 November to 25 November 2027 — 24.2 days
- 15 December 2028 to 8 January 2029 — 24.0 days
- 7 October to 5 November 2029 — 29.4 days
None of these holds a slow loop, since the next one here comes in January 2062. Each passage listed is a straight, brisk crossing.
The 2027 window in January is the one to note. Venus crosses the sign while the Sun is in Capricorn — the most common set-up of all, and the same pair that leads the birth data above.
Reading it in your own chart
A sign tells you the flavour. The house tells you the room it plays out in. Think of the chart as a house with twelve rooms, each one covering an area of life, with the planets as the furniture inside.
Set this Venus in the fifth room, the room of play and romance, and its openness goes into courtship and creative work. In the second room, the room of money and values, the same openness shows up as loose spending. In the ninth room, which the sign matches by nature, it doubles down: study, faith, far places.
Two more things change the reading. Where is Jupiter? Since Jupiter hosts this Venus, the state of Jupiter colours it. Jupiter in its own sign makes for a strong, well-stocked host. And what aspects does Venus make? A peregrine planet has no rank of its own, so it takes its cues from what it touches.
Frequently asked questions
Is Venus in Sagittarius rare?
Not by much. Over 1600 to 2400, Venus spends 8.23 % of its time in Sagittarius. That is ninth of twelve, close to the even share of 8.33 %. The rarest is Capricorn at 8.04 %. In the short span from 1950 to 2010, Sagittarius came last at 6.92 %, because Venus made no slow loop there.
Is Venus good in Sagittarius?
It is peregrine, which means it holds none of the five old grades — not at home, not in detriment, not exalted, not in fall. William Lilly defined a peregrine planet as one with no essential dignity where it stands. The host is the counterweight: the sign belongs to Jupiter, the most open-handed planet in the old scheme. Unranked, but well received.
Is Venus in Sagittarius lucky?
The luck story comes from Jupiter, which rules the sign and which Ptolemy classed as a benefic — a helpful planet. Nothing here promises an outcome. It widens the range of what a person will try, which makes for more chances and more misses.
What is Venus in Sagittarius attracted to?
Range. Distance, learning, humour, plans. Someone from far off, or someone whose work this Venus knows nothing of. The pull is toward what widens the world, not toward what makes it safe.
Does Venus go retrograde in Sagittarius?
Rarely. Venus last turned retrograde in Sagittarius on 25 October 1954. The next backward run in this sign starts on 9 January 2062, when Venus slides back from Capricorn. That is a gap of 107 years. This is why the sign came last from 1950 to 2010: no slow loop, no lingering.
Which Sun signs can have Venus in Sagittarius?
Five only: Capricorn, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Libra. Venus never sits more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so the other seven are ruled out by maths.
Is Venus in Sagittarius unfaithful?
No old source says so. Peregrine means unranked, not false. What we can measure is different: Venus has no slow pause in this sign from 1954 to 2062, so it has no built-in reverse gear. That reads as unrest when a bond stalls, not as a taste for cheating.
Your Venus is one line of a much longer chart
Venus in Sagittarius holds 8.23 % of Venus’s time over 1600 to 2400, about one birth in twelve. It ran thin from 1950 to 2010 for a reason you can check on any ephemeris: Venus has not paused there since 1954, and will not until 2062. Unranked, hosted by Jupiter, and always on the move.
