Virgo Venus and Sagittarius Venus Compatibility: Square Venuses, Next-Door Suns

Virgo Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility looks like a clash on paper. The two signs sit three places apart on the zodiac wheel. That makes a square, the angle astrologers read as friction. Yet the Sun signs behind these two Venuses tell a softer story. The likeliest pair of Suns is Libra and Scorpio, two signs that sit side by side.

We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

Two Venuses, two very different ranks

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The fall and the detriment are its two weak places.

Partner Rank of Venus Ruler of the sign.
Virgo Venus Fall, her lowest seat. Mercury.
Sagittarius Venus No major rank, a guest. Jupiter.

Ptolemy set out these ranks in Book I of the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. He put the exaltation of Venus in Pisces and her fall, which he called her depression, in Virgo. His reason was about moisture. Venus is moist by nature, he wrote, so she gains power in Pisces, where the wet spring begins. Virgo stands for the dry autumn, so she sinks there. Our page on Venus in Virgo explains why a fall is not the same as a detriment.

In Sagittarius, Venus holds no major rank at all. Astrologers call such a planet peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. She owns a few degrees there, her terms, but nothing more. So she loves in the manner of her host, Jupiter: wide, frank and hungry for meaning. Our page on Venus in Sagittarius covers this placement in full.

A weak rank is a label from old books. It is not a flaw in a person. In Virgo, Venus speaks with Mercury’s accent: careful and exact. In Sagittarius, she speaks with Jupiter’s: broad and open. The two hosts do not share a style, and that sets the tone of the pair.

A square between two double signs

Virgo and Sagittarius sit three signs apart. That makes a square, an angle of 90 degrees. In chapter 13, Ptolemy calls the square disharmonious. His reason is simple. The two signs are of opposite kinds. Virgo is feminine, the old term for earth and water signs. Sagittarius is masculine, the old term for fire and air.

The pair shares one trait, though. In chapter 11, Ptolemy calls Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces the bicorporeal signs, meaning double-bodied. Modern astrologers call them mutable. Each one ends a season. So, he wrote, each shares the weather of two seasons at its end and its start. Virgo closes summer. Sagittarius closes autumn.

That shared trait makes this square unusual. It joins an earth sign and a fire sign, and both are mutable. Among all 78 Venus pairs, no other pair fits that exact profile. Two mutable signs adjust easily. The friction comes from what each one adjusts toward: the detail for Virgo, the horizon for Sagittarius.

Ptolemy had two other ways to link signs, in chapters 14 and 15. Signs can “command” and “obey,” or they can “behold” each other. These chapters can be read two ways. Frank Robbins, in his notes 80 and 83, reads them by whole signs. William Lilly read them by exact degrees, using mirror points. Virgo and Sagittarius get neither tie under either reading. So the square stands on its own.

How common this pair is

Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of time, 1600 to 2400 Rank among twelve.
Venus in Virgo 8.41 percent Fifth of twelve.
Venus in Sagittarius 8.23 percent Ninth of twelve.
Even split 8.33 percent One sign in twelve.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Virgo and the other Venus in Sagittarius? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.38 percent, or about one couple in 72. That ranks 36th of the 78 Venus pairs, right in the middle. Among the twelve Venus squares, it ranks seventh.

Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus

Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. Ptolemy knew this. In chapter 17 he notes that Venus is never more than two signs from the Sun. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Sun sign Share of Virgo Venus people Note.
Cancer 8.65 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Leo 29.85 percent The largest group.
Virgo 23.66 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Libra 28.93 percent Venus one sign behind.
Scorpio 8.91 percent Venus two signs behind.
Sun sign Share of Sagittarius Venus people Note.
Libra 9.48 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Scorpio 29.18 percent The largest group.
Sagittarius 23.50 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Capricorn 28.58 percent Venus one sign behind.
Aquarius 9.27 percent Venus two signs behind.

In calendar terms, Virgo Venus people are born between about June 21 and November 21. Sagittarius Venus people are born between about September 23 and February 18. The two windows overlap for two months, the months of Libra and Scorpio.

Square Venuses, next-door Suns

Look at the two lists again. Two Sun signs appear in both: Libra and Scorpio. So these partners can share a Sun sign in two ways. Both can be Libra Suns, in 2.74 percent of couples. Both can be Scorpio Suns, in 2.60 percent. Together, that is 5.34 percent, or about one couple in 19.

Most couples, though, have two different Suns. We multiplied each partner’s Sun shares to find the likeliest mix. The winner is one Libra Sun and one Scorpio Sun, at 9.29 percent of these couples. In nearly all of those, the Libra Sun holds the Virgo Venus and the Scorpio Sun holds the Sagittarius Venus. The reverse is rare, under one percent.

Mix of Sun signs Share of these couples Angle between the Suns.
Libra and Scorpio 9.29 percent Next-door signs.
Leo and Scorpio 8.71 percent A square.
Leo and Capricorn 8.53 percent Five signs apart.
Libra and Capricorn 8.27 percent A square.

So the two Venuses stand at right angles, while the likeliest Suns stand shoulder to shoulder. The four top mixes run close, though. None reaches one couple in ten. Treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.

How do the two Suns line up across all these couples? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.

Angle between the two Suns Share of couples What it means.
Square 24.2 percent The Suns echo the Venus square.
Sextile 19.1 percent A friendly link, two signs apart.
Trine 19.0 percent Suns in easy step.
Semi-sextile 13.6 percent Next-door signs.
Quincunx 13.6 percent Five signs apart, with no classic aspect.
Same sign 5.3 percent Both Libra or both Scorpio.
Opposition 5.2 percent The Suns face each other.

About one couple in four has square Suns as well as square Venuses. In the other three, the Sun story differs from the Venus story. Read both before you draw a conclusion.

Virgo and Sagittarius by Sun sign: not the same couple

Many readers land here because they are a Virgo Sun and a Sagittarius Sun. Our page on Virgo and Sagittarius compatibility gives the numbers for that Sun pair. Does it make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Among Virgo Venus people, 23.66 percent have a Virgo Sun. Among Sagittarius Venus people, 23.50 percent have a Sagittarius Sun. Across all signs, Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments.

Turn it around. In 41.6 percent of Virgo Venus and Sagittarius Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 43rd of the 78 pairs. In 5.56 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.

The square in real degrees

A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses three signs apart can be anywhere from 60 to 120 degrees apart. The true square is 90. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.

Orb Couples with a true square Reading.
3 degrees 19.00 percent About one in five.
6 degrees 36.01 percent About one in three.
8 degrees 46.25 percent Just under half.
10 degrees 55.59 percent Just over half.

These values are almost the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. Picture Venus at 0 degrees Virgo and at 29 degrees Sagittarius. The gap is 119 degrees. By sign it is a square. In the sky it is a trine. At the other edge, 29 degrees Virgo and 0 degrees Sagittarius sit 61 degrees apart, close to a sextile. At an 8 degree orb, 7.09 percent of these couples form a trine or a sextile by degree instead. That is almost twice the rate of an earth trine such as Virgo and Capricorn.

How the tradition reads this couple

None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.

  • Shared ground. Both signs are mutable, so both can bend. Neither needs a fixed routine to feel loved.
  • Scale. The Virgo Venus notices the small thing that is off. The Sagittarius Venus sees the big picture and skips the small print.
  • Honesty. Both value the truth. Virgo tells it with care and detail. Sagittarius tells it fast and blunt.
  • The sore spot. Critique can feel like a cage to the Sagittarius partner. Broad promises can feel empty to the Virgo partner.

A simple habit helps. Before a trip or a big plan, let the Sagittarius partner name the dream in one sentence. Then let the Virgo partner name the three steps that make it real. Each partner gets to love in their own way, and the square turns into a plan.

Ptolemy’s two hosts add one more layer. Mercury rules Virgo, and Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Each ruler is weak in the other’s sign. So each partner’s Venus answers to a ruler who struggles in the other’s home. The tradition would say the two must learn each other’s language, not borrow it.

The same signs through other planets and pairs

The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Virgo Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility covers the same two signs from the Moon’s side. A Virgo Venus has other partners too. With a Capricorn Venus, it forms an earth trine, in Virgo Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility. With a Pisces Venus, it faces the sign where Venus is exalted, in Virgo Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility.

A Sagittarius Venus forms the other mutable square with a Pisces Venus, in Sagittarius Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.

What the evidence says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.

So a square is not a warning, and a fall is not a flaw. This page shows the sky behind the label.

How we measured

We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.

Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 11 to 19.

Frequently asked questions

Are Venus in Virgo and Venus in Sagittarius compatible?

They form a square, which Ptolemy called disharmonious because the signs are of opposite kinds. Both are mutable, so both adjust. At an 8 degree orb, 46.25 percent of these couples have a true square. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

How common is a Virgo Venus and Sagittarius Venus couple?

About one couple in 72, or 1.38 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 36th of the 78 Venus pairs and seventh of the 12 Venus squares.

Can a Virgo Venus and a Sagittarius Venus share a Sun sign?

Yes, in two ways: both Libra Suns or both Scorpio Suns. Together that happens in about one couple in 19.

What Sun signs are most likely for this couple?

The likeliest mix is one Libra Sun and one Scorpio Sun, at 9.29 percent of these couples. Leo with Scorpio and Leo with Capricorn come close behind.

Is Venus weak in Sagittarius?

No. Venus has no major rank in Sagittarius, so astrologers call her peregrine, a guest in Jupiter’s sign. Her weak places are Virgo, her fall, and Scorpio and Aries, her detriment.
