Virgo Venus and Capricorn Venus Compatibility: Venus in Her Fall Meets Venus in Her Rarest Sign

Virgo Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility joins two earth signs in a trine, the easiest link on the zodiac wheel. But this trine has a twist. One partner holds Venus in her fall, her lowest seat. The other holds Venus in Capricorn, the sign she visits least. That makes this one of the rarest trines among all the Venus pairs.

We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

Venus in her fall, Venus as a guest

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The fall and the detriment are its two weak places.

Partner Rank of Venus Ruler of the sign.
Virgo Venus Fall, her lowest seat. Mercury.
Capricorn Venus No major rank, a guest. Saturn.

Ptolemy set out these ranks in Book I of the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. He put the exaltation of Venus in Pisces and her fall, which he called her depression, in Virgo. His reason was about moisture. Venus is moist by nature, he wrote, so she gains power in Pisces, where the wet spring begins. Virgo stands for the dry autumn, so she sinks there. Our page on Venus in Virgo explains why a fall is not the same as a detriment.

In Capricorn, Venus holds no major rank. Astrologers call such a planet peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. She owns a few degrees there, her terms, but nothing more. So she loves in the manner of her host, Saturn: slow, loyal and built to last. Our page on Venus in Capricorn explains why minor ranks are not the same as weakness.

A weak rank is a label from old books. It is not a flaw in a person. In Virgo, Venus speaks with Mercury’s accent: careful and exact. In Capricorn, she speaks with Saturn’s: patient and serious. Both hosts favor order over display. That is one reason the tradition sees this pair as sober rather than showy.

An earth trine the old books praised

Virgo and Capricorn sit four signs apart. That makes a trine, an angle of 120 degrees. In chapter 13, Ptolemy calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is that both signs are of the same kind. Here both are feminine, the old term for the earth and water signs.

Chapter 18 adds a second tie. Ptolemy sorts the twelve signs into four triangles of three. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn form the earth triangle. He gave it to the Moon by night and to Venus by day. So in a day chart, Venus keeps a share in running both signs, even where her rank is low. A day chart is a birth with the Sun above the horizon.

The two signs differ in pace. Capricorn is what Ptolemy called a solstitial sign. The Sun turns there at the winter solstice, and a new season starts. Modern astrologers call it cardinal. Virgo is a bicorporeal, or mutable, sign. It closes summer and shares the weather of two seasons. Cardinal signs start things. Mutable signs adjust them. Among all 78 Venus pairs, this is the only earth trine that joins a cardinal sign and a mutable one.

Ptolemy had two other ways to link signs. In chapter 14, some signs “command” and others “obey.” In chapter 15, some signs “behold” each other. These chapters can be read two ways. Frank Robbins, in his notes 80 and 83, reads them by whole signs. William Lilly read them by exact degrees, using mirror points. Virgo and Capricorn get neither tie under either reading. So the trine is the whole bond here.

How common this pair is

Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of time, 1600 to 2400 Rank among twelve.
Venus in Virgo 8.41 percent Fifth of twelve.
Venus in Capricorn 8.04 percent Last of twelve, the rarest.
Even split 8.33 percent One sign in twelve.

On average, Venus keeps pace with the Sun. The Sun crosses the winter signs fastest, because Earth is closest to it in early January. So Capricorn gets the smallest share of Venus time. Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Virgo and the other Venus in Capricorn? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.35 percent, or about one couple in 74. That ranks 53rd of the 78 Venus pairs.

Among the twelve Venus pairs that form a trine, this one ranks eleventh. Only Scorpio and Pisces make a rarer trine. The contrast with the other earth trine that holds a Virgo Venus is sharp. Its sister page, Taurus Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility, covers the most common trine of all twelve.

Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus

Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Sun sign Share of Virgo Venus people Note.
Cancer 8.65 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Leo 29.85 percent The largest group.
Virgo 23.66 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Libra 28.93 percent Venus one sign behind.
Scorpio 8.91 percent Venus two signs behind.
Sun sign Share of Capricorn Venus people Note.
Scorpio 9.60 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Sagittarius 28.80 percent Venus one sign ahead.
Capricorn 23.21 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Aquarius 28.98 percent The largest group.
Pisces 9.41 percent Venus two signs behind.

In calendar terms, Virgo Venus people are born between about June 21 and November 21. Capricorn Venus people are born between about October 23 and March 20. The two windows overlap for a single month, the month of Scorpio.

One shared Sun sign, and it is Scorpio

Look at the two lists. Only one Sun sign appears in both: Scorpio. A Scorpio Sun can hold Venus in Virgo, at the far edge of its range. It can hold Venus in Capricorn, at the other edge. So these partners share a Sun sign only if both are Scorpio.

How rare is that? Multiply the two Scorpio shares, 8.91 percent and 9.60 percent. The result is 0.86 percent, about one couple in 117. In the other 116, the two Suns differ.

What does the typical couple look like instead? We multiplied each partner’s Sun shares to rank the mixes. Four of them run almost level.

Mix of Sun signs Share of these couples Angle between the Suns.
Leo and Aquarius 8.65 percent An opposition.
Leo and Sagittarius 8.60 percent A fire trine.
Libra and Aquarius 8.38 percent An air trine.
Libra and Sagittarius 8.33 percent A sextile.

Notice the elements. The Venuses are both earth. Yet the likeliest Suns are fire and air: Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius. Across all these couples, one fire Sun with one air Sun is the most common mix, at 17 percent. Two earth Suns, a Virgo and a Capricorn, turn up in only 5.49 percent. So the quiet earth link sits, in most couples, under a brighter Sun story.

How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.

Angle between the two Suns Share of couples What it means.
Trine 25.0 percent Suns in easy step, like the Venuses.
Quincunx 24.3 percent Five signs apart, with no classic aspect.
Square 19.0 percent A tense right angle.
Opposition 12.9 percent The Suns face each other.
Sextile 12.7 percent A friendly link, two signs apart.
Semi-sextile 5.3 percent Next-door signs.
Same sign 0.9 percent Both Suns in Scorpio.

Only one couple in four has its Suns in a trine as well. Almost as many have Suns five signs apart, a link the old authors did not count at all.

Virgo and Capricorn by Sun sign: not the same couple

Many readers land here because they are a Virgo Sun and a Capricorn Sun. Our page on Virgo and Capricorn compatibility gives the numbers for that Sun pair. Does it make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Among Virgo Venus people, 23.66 percent have a Virgo Sun. Among Capricorn Venus people, 23.21 percent have a Capricorn Sun. Across all signs, Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments.

Turn it around. In 41.38 percent of Virgo Venus and Capricorn Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 60th of the 78 pairs. In 5.49 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.

The trine in real degrees

A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses four signs apart can be anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees apart. The true trine is 120. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.

Orb Couples with a true trine Reading.
3 degrees 18.99 percent About one in five.
6 degrees 35.96 percent About one in three.
8 degrees 46.17 percent Just under half.
10 degrees 55.49 percent Just over half.

These values are almost the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Virgo and at 0 degrees Capricorn. The gap is 91 degrees. By sign it is a trine. In the sky it is a square. At an 8 degree orb, 3.62 percent of these couples form another major aspect by degree instead.

How the tradition reads this couple

None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.

  • Shared ground. Both show love through deeds. A fixed bill, a kept promise and a plan that works all count as romance.
  • Pace. The Capricorn Venus starts the plan and wants it to last. The Virgo Venus adjusts the plan and wants it to work.
  • Tone. Both can be reserved. Warm words come slower than useful acts.
  • The sore spot. Two careful lovers can forget to play. Duty can crowd out delight.

A simple habit helps. Put one evening a week on the calendar with no task attached. Let the Capricorn partner protect the date. Let the Virgo partner choose one small pleasure for it. Each then gets to love in their own way, and the plan serves the romance.

The tradition reads the fall as Venus working harder for less. Read that way, the Virgo Venus earns affection through effort, and the Capricorn Venus returns it with patience. The trine gives them a shared tongue. In the earth signs, love is shown in things you can touch.

The same signs through other planets and pairs

The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility covers the same two signs from the Moon’s side. A Virgo Venus meets a fire sign at right angles in Virgo Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility.

A Capricorn Venus closes the earth triangle with a Taurus Venus, in Taurus Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.

What the evidence says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.

So a trine is not a promise, and a fall is not a warning. This page shows the sky behind the label.

How we measured

We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.

Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 11 to 19.

Frequently asked questions

Are Venus in Virgo and Venus in Capricorn compatible?

They form an earth trine, which Ptolemy called harmonious. Venus is in her fall in Virgo and has no major rank in Capricorn. At an 8 degree orb, 46.17 percent of these couples have a true trine. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

How common is a Virgo Venus and Capricorn Venus couple?

About one couple in 74, or 1.35 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 53rd of the 78 Venus pairs and eleventh of the 12 trine pairs.

Can a Virgo Venus and a Capricorn Venus share a Sun sign?

Only if both partners have the Sun in Scorpio. That happens in about one couple in 117.

Why is Venus in Capricorn the rarest Venus sign?

On average, Venus keeps pace with the Sun, and the Sun crosses the winter signs fastest. So she spends the least time in Capricorn. Over 1600 to 2400, she is there 8.04 percent of the time, against an even share of 8.33 percent.

Which Sun signs are most likely for this couple?

Four mixes run almost level: Leo with Aquarius, Leo with Sagittarius, Libra with Aquarius and Libra with Sagittarius. Each covers a little over 8 percent of these couples.
