Ask the web whether Venus in Capricorn is a good place for Venus, and you get views. Ask the old astrology books, and you get a quieter answer than you expect. That answer is more helpful than any view.
Venus is not exalted in Capricorn. Venus is not in fall there. Venus does not rule the sign, and Venus is not in exile there either. So Venus holds none of the four major ranks here. It does keep two minor ones. In a daytime chart, Venus rules the earth signs, Capricorn included: a rank called triplicity. And it owns a small slice of degrees in the sign, called its terms. Astrologers have a word for a planet with no rank at all: peregrine, from the Latin for wanderer. Venus in Capricorn is peregrine only in a night chart, and only outside its terms.
This page does three things the top results do not. It names the ranks, major and minor. It counts how many birth charts really hold this spot, using an 800-year scan we ran ourselves. And it gives you the exact dates Venus sits in Capricorn between 2026 and 2028.
What Venus in Capricorn means without a major rank
Start with the two words. Venus is the planet of desire. It shows what draws you, what you spend money on, and how you court someone. Capricorn is a sign of earth ruled by Saturn, the planet of limits, time and proof.
The old books sort planets into five ranks per sign. A planet rules a sign, is exalted in it, is in fall, is in exile, or holds nothing. Claudius Ptolemy laid out this scheme in the second century AD in his Tetrabiblos, the book that fixed Western practice for 1,400 years. Venus rules Taurus and Libra. Venus is exalted in Pisces. Venus falls in Virgo and goes into exile in Aries and Scorpio.
Capricorn appears on none of those lists. The same books also give smaller ranks. Ptolemy gives the earth signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn to Venus by day and to the Moon by night. William Lilly repeats this in 1647. He also gives Venus the first six degrees of Capricorn as its terms. So Capricorn is not blank space for Venus. It is a minor seat.
A minor seat is not bad news. No major rule is doing the work for you or against you. So most of the reading comes from one other place, and that place is Saturn.
Saturn is the landlord of this placement
Every sign has a ruling planet. When a planet sits in a sign it does not rule, tradition says it answers to the ruler of that sign. Astrologers call that ruler the dispositor, which simply means the planet in charge of the ground. Venus in Capricorn answers to Saturn.
Vettius Valens, a Greek astrologer writing around 160 AD in his Anthologies, treated Saturn as the planet of long labour and delayed reward. William Lilly, the English astrologer whose Christian Astrology came out in 1647, called Saturn cold, dry and slow to act. Put the planet of desire under that landlord and you get a plain result. Desire here is slow, and it wants proof.
That is why the shared portrait of this placement keeps circling the same words. Loyal. Wary. Not moved by flash. Those words are not a folk belief. They follow from Saturn holding the lease.
The modern reading adds a second layer. Liz Greene, the astrologer and analyst who reshaped the field from the 1970s onward, reads Saturn as the part of a chart that has been hurt and has built a defence. Read Venus in Capricorn through that lens and the caution is not coldness. It is a rule about who gets access, written after something went wrong.
Robert Hand, in Planets in Transit (1976), makes a point worth keeping. A Saturn setup does not block the thing. It prices it. Venus in Capricorn wants love as much as any Venus. It refuses to buy it cheap.
How common is Venus in Capricorn? We counted
No one in the top ten results gives a number. So we ran one.
Here is the method, so you can check it. We checked the sky once an hour from 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400, about seven million moments. A shorter window misleads, because Venus repeats its path only every eight years and drifts over centuries. For each moment we computed the position of Venus and of the Sun, with the astronomy-engine tool, which draws on the same modern planet models as the Swiss Ephemeris. We used the tropical zodiac, the standard in Western practice. Then we counted signs. As a second check, we timed every Venus sign change over the same 800 years and added up the days.
Venus sat in Capricorn 8.04 per 100 of the time. That is the lowest of the twelve signs. Cancer is the highest, at 8.62 per 100.
Compare that with the Sun. Over the same 800 years, the Sun sat in Capricorn 8.06 times per 100, also its lowest. The two figures sit almost on top of each other. Venus visits Capricorn at nearly the same rate as the Sun, even though Venus moves far faster.
Why the numbers match is worth a sentence. Venus never wanders more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, because Venus orbits inside the Earth’s orbit. Over a long stretch, Venus gets dragged around the zodiac at the Sun’s own pace. The two clocks land in the same place.
That also explains the low rank. The Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, so the Sun crosses Capricorn faster than any other sign, and Venus is dragged along. So Venus in Capricorn is the rarest Venus sign, but only by a hair. About one person in twelve has it.
Only five Sun signs can hold Venus in Capricorn
Here is the part the 47-degree rule makes strange, and the part no article we found states.
Because Venus stays close to the Sun, your Venus sign is never far from your Sun sign. Venus can sit at most two signs ahead of the Sun, or two behind. Seven Sun signs are locked out of this spot, and locked out for good.
From the same 800-year scan, here is who really has Venus in Capricorn. Each figure is the share of all people born with it:
- Aquarius Sun — 29.0 per 100. The largest group, by a hair.
- Sagittarius Sun — 28.8 per 100.
- Capricorn Sun — 23.2 per 100.
- Scorpio Sun — 9.6 per 100.
- Pisces Sun — 9.4 per 100.
- Every other Sun sign — zero. Not rare. Ruled out.
Read that list again, because it upends the usual portrait. Only 23.2 per 100 Capricorn Suns hold Venus in Capricorn. The single biggest group of people with this spot are Aquarius Suns, with Sagittarius Suns close behind.
That matters for how you read yourself. If you are an Aquarius Sun with Venus in Capricorn, you carry an open mind built on ideas and a private heart built on rules. Those two pull apart. That friction is the reading. It is not a clash to be explained away.
The same logic runs through the whole chart, which is why one spot never tells the story. Our guide to the planet Venus and its role in love sets out how the pieces fit together.
Venus in Capricorn woman, Venus in Capricorn man
Two of the most searched versions of this question split by gender. The chart does not. Venus works the same way in every chart. What differs is how the world reads the same trait.
A Venus in Capricorn woman is read as guarded. The same restraint in a man is read as steady. The chart is the same. The label changes.
What this spot does say, for anyone:
- Courtship is slow on purpose. Saturn tests before it commits. Speed reads as risk.
- Actions count, words do not. A ride to the airport lands harder than a kind word.
- Taste runs classic. Clean lines, good cloth, few pieces, kept for years. Alice Sparkly Kat put it well in 2022: this Venus finds beauty by cutting away, not by piling on.
- Money is part of love. Saturn treats a shared budget as a form of trust. Others find that cold. This Venus finds it honest.
- Status is the trap. Old texts warned that this Venus can marry for standing. That is the shadow side, not the rule.
Demetra George, who has spent decades restoring the Greek sources, makes a distinction worth borrowing. The Greek texts described states and outcomes. Modern work describes patterns you can act on. The status trap is a pattern, and you can see it coming.
When Venus is in Capricorn: exact dates for 2026 to 2028
Venus is also a transit, not just a birth position. When Venus enters Capricorn, the whole sky takes on that flavour for a few weeks. Astrologers call the moment a planet crosses from one sign into the next an ingress.
We ran these crossings with the same tool, then narrowed each one to the minute. All times are UTC.
- Venus entered Capricorn on 24 December 2025 and left on 17 January 2026. Stay: 23.8 days.
- Venus enters Capricorn on 3 February 2027 and leaves on 1 March 2027. Stay: 25.7 days.
- Venus enters Capricorn on 25 November 2027 and leaves on 19 December 2027. Stay: 24.3 days.
- Venus does not enter Capricorn at any point during 2028. The next crossing is 8 January 2029.
That gap is real and it surprises people. Venus works on a rhythm of about 19 months, so a given sign gets skipped some years. If you are waiting on a Venus in Capricorn season in 2028, it does not come.
Across the 85 passes we measured between 1950 and 2030, the shortest stay lasted 18.9 days and the longest 121 days. The plain passes cluster near 24 days.
These windows suit the work Saturn likes. Signing a lease with a partner. Setting a price. Ending something that has been dragging. Our page on Saturn in Capricorn covers what happens when the landlord comes home to his own sign.
The long stay: Venus retrograde in Capricorn
That 121-day figure needs explaining. Planets sometimes look as if they move backwards from where we stand on Earth. That is what retrograde means. It is a trick of viewing angle, not a real reversal, and Venus does it about once every 19 months.
When Venus turns retrograde inside Capricorn, it re-enters the sign, backs up, then goes forward again. The visit stretches from three weeks to four months.
We scanned every Venus retrograde from 1950 to 2030. Eight of them touched Capricorn, and they land in a clean eight-year rhythm:
- 5 January 1966
- 3 January 1974
- 31 December 1981
- 29 December 1989
- 26 December 1997
- 24 December 2005
- 21 December 2013
- 19 December 2021, running to 29 January 2022
The next one starts 16 December 2029 and ends 26 January 2030. Venus stays in Capricorn from 5 November 2029 to 6 March 2030, all 121 days of it.
Chris Brennan, whose Hellenistic Astrology (2017) traces these techniques to their Greek sources, points out that the ancients watched Venus rise and set before they watched it turn back. The retrograde matters because it repeats. Every eight years, the same stretch of sky gets covered three times.
Who Venus in Capricorn is drawn to
Desire shows in the Venus sign, not the Sun sign. That is the first correction to make.
The easy matches are the other earth signs, Taurus and Virgo, plus fellow Capricorn. Same language, same pace. The strong match is Cancer, the sign directly opposite. Opposites in a chart share a theme and split the work: Cancer holds the feeling, Capricorn holds the structure. Our guide to Cancer and Capricorn Venus matches works through that pairing.
Two Capricorn Venuses make the rarest of all 78 Venus pairs, as Capricorn Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility shows.
A Sagittarius Venus next door moves at a looser pace, as Sagittarius Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility shows.
The hard matches are Aries and Libra, where the pace clashes, and Gemini, where the seriousness reads as heaviness.
The Gemini case is a quincunx, and Gemini Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility shows how the two Venuses mirror each other by degree in about 1 couple in 5.
The Aries clash is a square between two cardinal signs, traced in Aries Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility.
The other cardinal square comes from Libra, where Venus is at home, as Libra Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility shows.
With a Virgo Venus, the earth trine joins the rarest Venus sign to Venus in her fall, as Virgo Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility shows.
A Scorpio Venus sits a sextile away, and Scorpio Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility shows that by day Venus shares rule of both signs.
None of this is a verdict. Two charts hold ten other bodies. A single Venus pairing settles nothing on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Is Venus in Capricorn good or bad?
Neither, in the strict sense. Venus holds no major dignity and no debility in Capricorn. It keeps two minor ranks: it rules the earth signs by day, and it owns the first six degrees of the sign as its terms. No major rule helps it, and none harms it. The reading comes mostly from Saturn, the ruler of the sign, not from a score.
How rare is Venus in Capricorn?
It is the rarest Venus sign, but only by a hair. From 1600 to 2400, Venus sat in Capricorn 8.04 per 100 of the time, against 8.62 for Cancer, the most frequent. That is close to one person in twelve.
Which Sun signs can have Venus in Capricorn?
Five, and only five: Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Venus never sits more than two signs from the Sun, so the other seven are ruled out. The largest group is Aquarius Sun, at 29.0 per 100 of all Venus in Capricorn people, just ahead of Sagittarius.
What is the worst Venus placement?
By the classical ranks, Venus is weakest in Virgo, where it is in fall, and in Aries and Scorpio, where it is in exile. Capricorn is on none of those lists.
When is Venus in Capricorn next?
3 February 2027 to 1 March 2027, then 25 November 2027 to 19 December 2027. There is no Venus in Capricorn period during 2028.
How do you know if a Venus in Capricorn person likes you?
Watch what they schedule, not what they say. A repeated, planned slot in their week is the signal. Saturn shows care through time given.
Reading the whole chart
Venus in Capricorn is one line in a much longer document. Its house, its aspects and the state of Saturn itself change the reading completely. A Venus in Capricorn sitting next to Jupiter reads nothing like one squared by Mars.
Astrovision builds that full reading from your exact birth time and place, and delivers it as a written guide and a personal audio episode. A planet with only minor ranks gets read in context, which is the only way it can be read honestly.
