Libra Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility joins two Venus signs three signs apart. That distance makes a square, the tense right angle of astrology. Both signs are also cardinal, the signs that open a season. Libra opens autumn in the north, and Capricorn opens winter.
There is a second thread, and it runs through Saturn. Saturn rules Capricorn. In Libra, the old books give Saturn its exaltation, its seat of honor. So Saturn holds rank in both Venus signs of this couple. Among the Venus squares, Saturn plays that role only here.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. Read what follows as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Two Venus signs, two very different ranks
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The detriment and the fall are its weak places.
Libra is one of the two homes of Venus. Taurus is the other. So a Libra Venus sits in her own house, with full rule. Ptolemy and later William Lilly both count this as one of her strongest seats.
Capricorn gives Venus no major rank at all. It is not her home, her exaltation, her detriment or her fall. She keeps two minor ranks there. Ptolemy gave the earth signs to Venus by day and to the Moon by night. And by his table, Venus owns the first six degrees of Capricorn, a small band called her terms.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Who runs the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra Venus | Home, full rule. | Venus herself, with Saturn exalted. |
| Capricorn Venus | No major rank, two minor ones. | Saturn, with Mars exalted. |
A rank is a label from old books. It is not a grade for a person. Our page on Venus in Libra shows what full rule means in practice. Our page on Venus in Capricorn explains why minor ranks are not the same as weakness.
Saturn holds rank on both sides
Here is the thread that sets this pair apart. Ptolemy placed the exaltation of Saturn in Libra. His reason was about heat. The Sun is exalted in Aries, where days grow longer and warmer. Saturn is cold, so it rises where the Sun’s heat starts to fade. That point is Libra, at the start of autumn.
Ptolemy gave Saturn another share in Libra too. In chapter 18 of the first book, he sorts the signs into four triangles. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius form the air triangle. He gave it to Saturn by day and to Mercury by night. So in a day chart, a birth with the Sun above the horizon, Saturn gains one more rank in Libra.
Then there is Capricorn, which Saturn rules outright. A Capricorn Venus is a guest in Saturn’s house. Saturn is the host who sets the terms.
Put the two partners side by side. One Venus is at home, but shares her house with an honored Saturn. The other Venus lives in Saturn’s own house. So Saturn has a say in both. In the old logic, Saturn stands for time, limits and what lasts. A tradition-minded reader would say this couple courts under a clock.
We checked all twelve Venus squares. In four of them, one planet holds a major rank in both signs. Mercury does it for Gemini and Virgo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, and Mars for Aries and Capricorn. Saturn does it only here.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Libra | 8.32 percent | Sixth of twelve. |
| Venus in Capricorn | 8.04 percent | Twelfth, the rarest. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Libra and the other Venus in Capricorn? Two different signs can pair two ways, so we double the product of the shares. The answer is 1.34 percent, about one couple in 75. That ranks 59th of the 78 Venus pairs.
There are four squares between cardinal signs. Their ranks are far apart.
| Cardinal Venus square | One couple in | Rank among twelve squares. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer and Libra | About 70 couples. | Second. |
| Aries and Cancer | About 70 couples. | Third. |
| Libra and Capricorn | About 75 couples. | Tenth. |
| Aries and Capricorn | About 75 couples. | Eleventh. |
The gap is small in plain terms. Cancer is the most common Venus sign, and Capricorn the least. So squares that include Capricorn drop down the list.
A square by sign, and how close the two Venuses sit
Ptolemy lists four aspects in chapter 13: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. A square joins signs three apart, a quarter of the circle. Air and earth meet here. In the old scheme, air is hot and moist and earth is cold and dry, so the two share no quality.
But a sign spans 30 degrees. A Libra Venus and a Capricorn Venus can sit anywhere from 60 to 120 degrees apart. The margin allowed around an exact aspect is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples form a true square.
| Orb | Couples with a true square | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 19.00 percent | About one in five. |
| 6 degrees | 36.00 percent | About one in three. |
| 8 degrees | 46.21 percent | Just under half. |
| 10 degrees | 55.53 percent | Just over half. |
So at an 8 degree orb, more than half of these couples have the square by sign only. A few form a different aspect across a sign line. A Venus late in Libra and one early in Capricorn sit close to 60 degrees, a sextile. A Venus early in Libra and one late in Capricorn sit close to 120 degrees, a trine. At 8 degrees, that happens in 7.12 percent of couples.
Ptolemy’s other ties, read two ways
Ptolemy named other links between signs in chapters 14 to 16 of the first book. Two of them come in two readings, and sites mix them up. Here is how each reading treats this pair.
The first link is signs that “command” and “obey.” They sit at equal distance from the spring point, 0 degrees Aries. Read by whole signs, Aries and Libra sit on that axis and have no partner. Robbins, the translator, says so in his note 80. Read by degrees, a Libra degree mirrors a Virgo degree. Either way, Libra and Capricorn are not linked.
The second link is signs that “behold” each other, or have equal power. When the Sun is in either sign, the days have the same length. Robbins lists these pairs by whole sign in his note 83: Gemini and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Pisces and Scorpio, Aquarius and Sagittarius. Cancer and Capricorn are left out. They are the two turning points themselves.
The degree reading works differently. It mirrors each degree across 0 degrees Cancer, the longest day. Lilly calls these mirror points antiscia. On that reading, Libra mirrors Pisces and Capricorn mirrors Sagittarius. So neither reading links Libra with Capricorn, and no couple here forms an antiscion at a 3 degree orb.
The third link is aversion. Signs one or five apart cannot see each other at all. Libra and Capricorn are three apart, so they do see each other. For this pair, the square is the only classical tie.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign goes with only five Sun signs.
| Sun sign | Share of Libra Venus people | Share of Capricorn Venus people. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo | 8.99 percent | None. |
| Virgo | 30.08 percent | None. |
| Libra | 23.52 percent | None. |
| Scorpio | 28.37 percent | 9.60 percent. |
| Sagittarius | 9.05 percent | 28.80 percent. |
| Capricorn | None | 23.21 percent. |
| Aquarius | None | 28.98 percent. |
| Pisces | None | 9.41 percent. |
In calendar terms, Libra Venus people are born between about July 23 and December 21. Capricorn Venus people are born between about October 23 and March 20. The two windows overlap only in the Scorpio and Sagittarius weeks.
Now combine two partners. We multiplied the Sun sign shares and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Scorpio with a Sagittarius counts once.
| Sun pair | Share of these couples | Rank. |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio and Sagittarius | 9.04 percent | First. |
| Virgo and Aquarius | 8.72 percent | Second. |
| Virgo and Sagittarius | 8.66 percent | Third. |
| Scorpio and Aquarius | 8.22 percent | Fourth. |
| Libra and Capricorn | 5.46 percent | Out of the top eight. |
No Sun pair stands out. The top one covers about one couple in eleven, so read it as a slight lean, not a rule. The likeliest face of this pair is a Scorpio and a Sagittarius, born in late autumn. Both Suns sit in the weeks where the two Venus windows overlap.
The two Suns form a square in 24.06 percent of couples, about one in four. They share one sign in only 5.33 percent, about one couple in 19. That shared Sun can only be Scorpio or Sagittarius.
A Libra Sun and a Capricorn Sun are a different couple
Many readers land here because one partner is a Libra Sun and the other a Capricorn Sun. That Sun pair has its own page, Libra and Capricorn compatibility by Sun sign. It counts how common the couple is in US births.
The Venus pair is a separate thing. Among Libra Venus and Capricorn Venus couples, only 5.46 percent pair a Libra Sun with a Capricorn Sun. In 41.27 percent, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 66th of the 78 pairs.

How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- The Libra side. Venus at home wants ease, grace and fair shares. Love is shown through tact and pleasant company.
- The Capricorn side. Venus in Saturn’s house wants proof over time. Love is shown through plans kept and help that lasts.
- The square. Both are cardinal, so both like to start things. Friction comes when both want to set the pace.
- The Saturn thread. Each side answers to Saturn in some way. Patience is part of the deal from day one.
A simple habit helps. Let the Libra partner name what would make a week feel kind. Let the Capricorn partner name one thing to build together this month. Write both down, and check them at month’s end.
The tradition sees a square as work, not doom. Read that way, this couple trades charm for structure and gets both back. The Libra side brings the warmth. The Capricorn side makes it last.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a square is not a warning, and a shared ruler is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.
Frequently asked questions
Are Libra Venus and Capricorn Venus compatible?
By sign they form a square, a tense aspect between two cardinal signs. At an 8 degree orb, 46.21 percent of these couples have a true square. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Libra Venus and Capricorn Venus couple?
About one couple in 75, or 1.34 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 59th of the 78 Venus pairs and tenth of the 12 squares.
Why does Saturn matter for this pair?
Saturn rules Capricorn, and Ptolemy placed its exaltation in Libra. So Saturn holds a major rank in both Venus signs. Among the twelve Venus squares, Saturn plays this role only here.
What Sun signs do Libra Venus and Capricorn Venus partners have?
The likeliest mix is a Scorpio and a Sagittarius, in 9.04 percent of these couples. A Libra Sun with a Capricorn Sun makes up only 5.46 percent.
Do Libra and Capricorn “behold” each other in Ptolemy?
No. By whole signs, Libra beholds Aries and Capricorn has no partner. By degrees, Libra mirrors Pisces and Capricorn mirrors Sagittarius.
