Gemini Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility starts with an awkward angle. The two signs sit five places apart on the zodiac wheel. Astrologers call that a quincunx, a gap of 150 degrees. It is not one of the four classic aspects. Yet Ptolemy links these signs in a quieter way, and the link only shows up when you count degrees.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for love, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
What a Venus sign adds
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. It is a separate layer from your Sun sign. Two people with Gemini Suns can have Venus in three or four different signs. So this page is about a second question, not the one most horoscopes ask.
Two guests in the houses of Mercury and Saturn
The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a seat of honor. The detriment and the fall are its two weak places. Venus holds none of these major ranks in Gemini or in Capricorn. She is a guest in both.
The guest rooms differ, though. Ptolemy also gave planets two minor ranks. One is the terms, a small band of degrees inside a sign. The other is a share in running a triangle, a set of three signs of one element. Here is what Venus holds in each sign.
| Partner | Host of the sign | Minor ranks of Venus. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Venus | Mercury | Terms from 12 to 17 degrees, five degrees wide. |
| Capricorn Venus | Saturn | Terms from 14 to 22 degrees, and a share of the earth triangle by day. |
In Book I, chapter 18, Ptolemy gives the earth triangle of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn to Venus by day and the Moon by night. A day chart is a birth with the Sun above the horizon. So a Capricorn Venus born by day has a small say in her own sign. A Gemini Venus has none beyond her terms. Our page on Venus in Capricorn explains why those minor ranks are the point of that placement.
The hosts tell the rest. A Gemini Venus loves on Mercury’s terms: talk, wit, news and a quick reply. Our page on Venus in Gemini shows why the flighty label misreads it. A Capricorn Venus loves on Saturn’s terms: time, proof, duty and a plan that lasts. One Venus speaks fast. The other keeps score of what gets done.
By sign, no link at all
In chapter 13, Ptolemy names four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Signs five apart form none of them. In chapter 16, he calls signs one or five apart “disjunct,” or averse. He says signs five apart divide the circle into unequal parts. But there is a condition. A pair is only disjunct if it also lacks two other ties, from chapters 14 and 15.
Chapter 14 covers signs that “command” and “obey.” They sit at equal distance from an equinox sign and rise in equal times. Chapter 15 covers signs that “behold” each other, with days of equal length. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs by whole signs in his notes 80 and 83.
| Tie in Ptolemy | Mate of Gemini | Mate of Capricorn. |
|---|---|---|
| Command and obey, note 80 | Aquarius | Cancer. |
| Behold, note 83 | Leo | None, Capricorn is left without a mate. |
On that reading, Gemini and Capricorn share no tie. They are disjunct: no aspect, no command, no gaze.
By degree, a mirror across the equinox
The second reading uses exact degrees. Ptolemy’s reason for chapter 14 is that the two parts rise in equal times and lie on equal parallels. That is true of mirror points across the line from 0 degrees Aries to 0 degrees Libra. Later astrologers call such points contra-antiscia. William Lilly used mirror points by degree in Christian Astrology, in 1647.
Take a Venus at 10 degrees Gemini. It sits 70 degrees past the spring equinox point. The mirror point sits 70 degrees before it, at 20 degrees Capricorn. The two rise in equal times. On this reading, every degree of Gemini has a partner in Capricorn. The Gemini degree commands, because it lies in the summer half of the zodiac. The Capricorn degree obeys.
How many couples land on those mirror points? We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign.
| Margin around the mirror point | Couples whose Venuses mirror | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 1 degree | 6.56 percent | About one couple in 15. |
| 3 degrees | 19.00 percent | About one couple in 5. |
Six Venus pairs get this mirror link by degree. Only two of them are quincunxes: this one and Cancer with Sagittarius. For Gemini and Capricorn, it is the only classical tie of any kind. So the answer to “are they linked?” depends on the reading. By whole signs, no. By degree, yes, for about one couple in five within 3 degrees.
How common the pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for about six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. It repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can tilt the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Gemini | 8.46 percent | Third of twelve. |
| Venus in Capricorn | 8.04 percent | Last of twelve, the rarest. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Capricorn? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.36 percent, or about one couple in 73. That ranks 49th of the 78 Venus pairs. There are twelve Venus quincunxes, and this one ranks tenth.
Suns on either side of the spring equinox
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs.
| Sun sign | Share of Gemini Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8.31 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Taurus | 29.06 percent | Venus one sign ahead. |
| Gemini | 24.02 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Cancer | 29.96 percent | The largest group. |
| Leo | 8.65 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
| Sun sign | Share of Capricorn Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio | 9.60 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Sagittarius | 28.80 percent | Venus one sign ahead. |
| Capricorn | 23.21 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Aquarius | 28.98 percent | The largest group. |
| Pisces | 9.41 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
The two lists share no sign. So these partners never have the same Sun sign. In calendar terms, Capricorn Venus people are born from about October 23 to March 20. Gemini Venus people are born from about March 20 to August 22. One window ends on the spring equinox, and the other starts there. The equinox is the same line that makes the mirror link above.
The typical couple, and how its Suns line up
The most likely mix is a Cancer Sun with the Gemini Venus and an Aquarius Sun with the Capricorn Venus. That covers 8.68 percent of these couples. Next come Cancer with Sagittarius, at 8.63 percent, and Taurus with Aquarius, at 8.42 percent. No single mix reaches one couple in eleven. So read the typical couple as a lean, not a rule.
| Angle between the two Suns | Share of couples | What it means. |
|---|---|---|
| Quincunx | 37.2 percent | Five signs apart, like the Venuses. |
| Trine | 24.3 percent | An easy link, four signs apart. |
| Opposition | 19.2 percent | The Suns face each other. |
| Square | 13.4 percent | A tense right angle. |
| Sextile | 5.1 percent | A friendly link, two signs apart. |
| Semi-sextile | 0.8 percent | Next-door signs. |
More than a third of these couples repeat the quincunx in their Suns. A quarter get an easy trine instead. Our page on Gemini and Capricorn compatibility by Sun sign reads the Suns on their own. Most couples reading that page are not this Venus pair. In 41.66 percent of Gemini Venus and Capricorn Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 5.58 percent, both do.
The quincunx in real degrees
Two Venuses five signs apart can be anywhere from 120 to 180 degrees apart. The true quincunx is 150. The margin allowed around it is called the orb.
| Orb | Couples with a true quincunx | Couples with a trine or opposition by degree. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 19.00 percent | 1.00 percent. |
| 6 degrees | 36.00 percent | 4.00 percent. |
| 8 degrees | 46.23 percent | 7.11 percent. |
| 10 degrees | 55.56 percent | 11.11 percent. |
The first column is almost the same for every Venus pair, so it is not a trait of this couple. The second column is the twist. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Gemini and at 0 degrees Capricorn. The gap is 179 degrees, one short of an opposition. At an 8 degree orb, about one couple in 14 has a classic aspect by degree, though not by sign.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- The pull. The Gemini Venus finds the Capricorn Venus calm and able. The Capricorn Venus finds the Gemini Venus quick and fun.
- The tempo. Gemini wants to try it now. Capricorn wants to know where it leads.
- The proof. Gemini shows love in words. Capricorn trusts love shown in time and deeds.
- The sore spot. Capricorn reads chatter as a lack of weight. Gemini reads caution as a lack of warmth.
A quincunx is read as a link that needs steady small fixes, not one big talk. The signs share no element, no mode and no gender. Air meets earth. Mutable meets cardinal. The tradition gives this pair no shared vocabulary, so each partner has to learn the other’s.
One plain habit helps. Let the Gemini partner put one promise in writing each week and keep it. Let the Capricorn partner say one feeling out loud each week, with no plan attached. Each learns to love in the other’s accent.
The same signs through other planets and pairs
The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Gemini Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility reads these two signs through that layer. One sign back from Capricorn, a Gemini Venus faces its opposite in Gemini and Sagittarius Venus placements. By distance, signs six apart share a mode and hold opposite ends of one axis.
A Capricorn Venus forms another quincunx with Leo, traced in Venus in Leo and Venus in Capricorn. Next door, it meets a Sagittarius Venus in Sagittarius Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a quincunx is not a warning, and a mirror point is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree and mirror figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 20.
Frequently asked questions
Are Venus in Gemini and Venus in Capricorn compatible?
They form a quincunx, five signs apart, which is not one of Ptolemy’s four aspects. The tradition reads it as a link that needs small, steady fixes. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Gemini Venus and Capricorn Venus couple?
About one couple in 73, or 1.36 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 49th of the 78 Venus pairs. Capricorn is the rarest Venus sign, at 8.04 percent of the time.
Can a Gemini Venus and a Capricorn Venus share a Sun sign?
No. A Capricorn Venus goes with Suns from Scorpio to Pisces. A Gemini Venus goes with Suns from Aries to Leo. The two ranges meet at the spring equinox and never overlap.
Does Gemini command Capricorn in Ptolemy?
It depends on the reading. By whole signs, as in Robbins’s note 80, Gemini pairs with Aquarius, so no. By exact degrees, each Gemini degree mirrors a Capricorn degree across the equinox line, so yes. About 19 percent of these couples have their Venuses within 3 degrees of those mirror points.
Is the quincunx exact for every couple?
No. It is within 8 degrees for 46 percent of couples and within 3 degrees for 19 percent. About 7 percent form a trine or an opposition by degree instead, at an 8 degree orb.
