Gemini Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility is the story of two signs set straight across the zodiac wheel. Astrologers call that an opposition. It is the widest link two signs can form: a straight line through the center. This page puts numbers on the pair, then reads it through the oldest books.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to count these couples. You will find how common the pair is, which Sun signs sit behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote. Read it as a lens for love, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
What a Venus sign is, in one paragraph
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. It is a layer apart from your Sun sign, the sign most people know. Two people with the same Sun sign can have Venus in different signs. So a Venus match is a second question, asked on its own terms.
Two guests at opposite ends of one axis
The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a seat of honor. The detriment and the fall are its two weak places. Venus holds none of these major ranks in Gemini or in Sagittarius. Here, both Venuses are guests.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Host of the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Venus | No major rank | Mercury, the messenger. |
| Sagittarius Venus | No major rank | Jupiter, the planet of growth. |
So each Venus is a guest, and the two hosts face off too. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. When a planet sits in the sign across from its home, later authors such as William Lilly call it in detriment. Mercury in Sagittarius is in detriment. Jupiter in Gemini is in detriment. Each host is weak in the other’s house.
That gives the pair a clear tone. A Gemini Venus loves on Mercury’s terms: words, news, jokes and questions. Our page on Venus in Gemini shows why the flighty label is lazy. A Sagittarius Venus loves on Jupiter’s terms: trips, big ideas, honest talk and room to grow. Our page on Venus in Sagittarius covers that placement in full.
The same five degrees on both sides
Ptolemy also split each sign into five uneven bands called terms. Each band belongs to one planet. A planet in its own terms holds a small rank, far below a home. The Egyptian table in Book I, chapter 20, of the Tetrabiblos gives Venus a band in both of these signs.
| Sign | Terms of Venus | Width of the band. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 12 to 17 degrees | Five degrees. |
| Sagittarius | 12 to 17 degrees | Five degrees. |
The bands sit on the same degrees. That matters for this pair. If one Venus sits at 14 degrees Gemini, the exact opposite point is 14 degrees Sagittarius. That point lies inside the Venus band too. So when both Venuses sit in their own terms, the link is always within five degrees of exact. In the Egyptian table, no other pair of signs across from each other gives Venus the same five degrees. Gemini’s band runs from 72 to 77 degrees of the zodiac. Sagittarius runs from 252 to 257. The gap is 180 degrees, to the degree.
This is a small rank, and it is our reading of the table, not a rule from Ptolemy. Still, it is the one spot on this axis where Venus has a say on both sides.
What Ptolemy said about oppositions
In chapter 13, Ptolemy names four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition disharmonious. His stated reason is that those two join signs of opposite kinds. For the square, that works. For the opposition, it does not. The two ends of each opposition are of the same kind. Gemini and Sagittarius are both masculine, the old term for air and fire signs.
The two signs share more than gender. Both are mutable, the last sign of their season. Gemini closes spring. Sagittarius closes autumn. Mutable signs adapt. Among all 78 Venus pairs, this is the only opposition that joins an air sign and a fire sign between two mutable signs.
Chapters 14 and 15 add other ties. Some signs “command” and “obey.” Others “behold” each other, because the Sun makes days of equal length in both. We checked both lists. In Frank Robbins’s notes 80 and 83, Gemini is paired with Aquarius and with Leo, not with Sagittarius. By exact degrees, as Lilly read it, the mirror of Gemini is Capricorn or Cancer. So on either reading, this pair has one tie only: the axis itself.
How common the pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for about six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. It repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can tilt the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Gemini | 8.46 percent | Third of twelve. |
| Venus in Sagittarius | 8.23 percent | Ninth of twelve. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Sagittarius? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.39 percent, or about one couple in 72. That ranks 32nd of the 78 Venus pairs. Of the six Venus pairs that sit across from each other, this one ranks third.
Suns that never meet
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The two tables show the split.
| Sun sign | Share of Gemini Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8.31 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Taurus | 29.06 percent | Venus one sign ahead. |
| Gemini | 24.02 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Cancer | 29.96 percent | The largest group. |
| Leo | 8.65 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
| Sun sign | Share of Sagittarius Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra | 9.48 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Scorpio | 29.18 percent | The largest group. |
| Sagittarius | 23.50 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Capricorn | 28.58 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Aquarius | 9.27 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
The two lists share no sign at all. So a Gemini Venus and a Sagittarius Venus never have the same Sun sign. In calendar terms, Gemini Venus people are born from about March 20 to August 22. Sagittarius Venus people are born from about September 22 to February 18. The two windows never touch. A month sits empty on each side: the month of Virgo and the month of Pisces.
The usual couple, and how its Suns line up
What does the usual couple look like? The most likely mix is a Cancer Sun and a Scorpio Sun. That covers 8.74 percent of these couples. Next come Cancer with Capricorn, at 8.56 percent, and Taurus with Scorpio, at 8.48 percent. No single mix reaches one couple in eleven. So treat the usual couple as a lean, not a rule.
Here is a twist. The Venuses face each other, but the Suns seldom do. We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.
| Angle between the two Suns | Share of couples | What it means. |
|---|---|---|
| Quincunx | 38.2 percent | Five signs apart, with no classic aspect. |
| Trine | 25.5 percent | An easy link, four signs apart. |
| Opposition | 24.3 percent | The Suns face each other too. |
| Square | 10.4 percent | A tense right angle. |
| Sextile | 1.6 percent | A friendly link, two signs apart. |
Only one couple in four has its Suns face to face as well. The quincunx leads, with nearly two couples in five. So the Venus story and the Sun story are two stories. A reader who knows only the Suns sees a different couple.
Many readers land here as a Gemini Sun and a Sagittarius Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Only in part. Among Gemini Venus people, 24.02 percent have a Gemini Sun. Among Sagittarius Venus people, 23.50 percent have a Sagittarius Sun. Turn it around. In 41.88 percent of these couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 5.64 percent, both do. Our page on Gemini and Sagittarius compatibility by Sun sign reads the Suns on their own.
The axis in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses six signs apart can be from 150 to 180 degrees apart, measured the short way round. The true opposition is 180. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign.
| Orb | Couples with a true opposition | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 19.02 percent | About one in five. |
| 6 degrees | 36.05 percent | About one in three. |
| 8 degrees | 46.30 percent | Just under half. |
| 10 degrees | 55.66 percent | Just over half. |
These values are almost the same for each Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. One detail is. For this pair, no couple slips into another major aspect by degree. The signs next to an opposition form quincunxes, not trines or squares. So the edge cases stay outside the classic set.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Shared ground. Both love through talk and new things. A long drive with a good argument counts as a date.
- Scale. The Gemini Venus wants many small facts. The Sagittarius Venus wants one big meaning.
- Pace. Both are mutable, so both adapt. The risk is that neither one holds the plan.
- The sore spot. Gemini hears a sermon when Sagittarius gets serious. Sagittarius hears small talk when Gemini gets playful.
The tradition reads this link as a mirror. Each partner holds what the other lacks. Gemini holds the near view: the street, the neighbor, the text sent at noon. Sagittarius holds the far view: the map, the creed, the trip next year. Modern astrologers link Gemini with the third house of lessons and short trips. They link Sagittarius with the ninth, of long trips and higher study. In a good week, the two roles swap.
A simple habit helps. Let the Gemini partner bring one new fact a day. Let the Sagittarius partner ask what it means. Then switch. The talk stays light and still goes somewhere.
The same signs through other planets and pairs
The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Gemini Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility reads these two signs through that layer. A Gemini Venus has other partners too. One sign further on, it meets the rarest Venus sign in Gemini Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility. One sign back, it meets a Venus in exile in Gemini and Scorpio Venus placements.
For another Venus pair across the wheel, see Taurus Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility, where Venus at home faces Venus in exile. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a face-off is not a warning, and a shared band of degrees is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 20.
Frequently asked questions
Are Venus in Gemini and Venus in Sagittarius compatible?
They form an opposition, which Ptolemy called disharmonious. The tradition reads it as a mirror: each partner holds what the other lacks. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Gemini Venus and Sagittarius Venus couple?
About one couple in 72, or 1.39 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 32nd of the 78 Venus pairs and third of the six pairs that sit across the wheel.
Can a Gemini Venus and a Sagittarius Venus share a Sun sign?
No. A Gemini Venus goes with Suns from Aries to Leo. A Sagittarius Venus goes with Suns from Libra to Aquarius. The two lists never overlap.
Does Venus have any rank in Gemini or Sagittarius?
No major rank in either sign. She holds only her terms, a small band from 12 to 17 degrees. The band sits on the same degrees in both signs, so the two bands stand exactly opposite.
Do the Suns of this couple oppose each other too?
In about one couple in four. The most common Sun link is a quincunx, five signs apart, in 38 percent of couples. The likeliest mix is a Cancer Sun with a Scorpio Sun.
