Taurus Venus and Scorpio Venus Compatibility: Opposite Venuses Whose Likeliest Suns Form an Air Trine

Taurus Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility sits on one straight line across the zodiac. Taurus is a sign Venus rules. Scorpio, directly opposite, is a sign of Mars, where the tradition says Venus is in exile. So this pair sets Venus at full strength across from Venus at her weakest. Both signs are fixed, the steady middle of a season.

We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to see what else comes with the pair. Two facts stand out. These partners never share a Sun sign. And their most likely Suns are not earth or water at all. They are Gemini and Libra, two air signs in an easy trine. This page gives the counts and the old rules behind them. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

Home and exile on the fixed axis

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Each planet has a home, or domicile, where it rules. The sign opposite a home is called its detriment, or exile. That later term comes from authors such as William Lilly, whose Christian Astrology came out in 1647.

Partner Rank of Venus Ruler of the sign.
Taurus Venus Home, or domicile. Venus herself.
Scorpio Venus Exile, or detriment. Mars.

Ptolemy, in Book I, chapter 17, of the Tetrabiblos, gave each planet its houses. Mars got Scorpio and Aries. Venus got Libra and Taurus. The two sets face each other across the wheel. Wherever Venus is at home, Mars is in exile, and the other way round.

A Taurus Venus loves through the senses and through time. It wants the same good things, again and again. Our page on Venus in Taurus covers this placement in full. A Scorpio Venus loves through depth and trust. It wants to know a partner all the way down. Our page on Venus in Scorpio explains why the books call it exile.

Lilly saw a planet in exile as one that works harder for less. That is a label from old books, not a flaw in a person. Here it means Venus speaks with Mars’s accent: intense, private and hard to sway.

Exile, but not without a seat

Ptolemy adds a second kind of rank in chapter 18. He sorts the twelve signs into four triangles of three, one for each element. Each triangle gets a ruler by day and one by night.

Triangle Ruler by day Ruler by night.
Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Venus The Moon.
Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Mars, with Venus Mars, with the Moon.

For the water triangle, Ptolemy names Mars as ruler because Scorpio is his house. Since the signs are feminine, he adds the Moon by night and Venus by day as co-rulers. So even in Scorpio, her place of exile, Venus keeps a share of rule in a day chart. A day chart means a birth with the Sun above the horizon.

Look at the night side. By night, the Moon helps run both triangles. The Moon has her own stake in this axis. In chapter 19, Ptolemy puts her exaltation in Taurus and her fall, which he calls her depression, in Scorpio. Our page on Taurus Moon and Scorpio Moon compatibility reads the same two signs through the Moon.

What Ptolemy says about the opposition

Taurus and Scorpio sit six signs apart. That makes an opposition, an angle of 180 degrees. In chapter 13, Ptolemy lists four aspects. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition disharmonious. So by the book, this is an angle of strain.

He names two more ties in chapters 14 and 15. Some signs “command” and “obey.” Some “behold” each other, because the Sun gives them days of equal length. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs in his notes 80 and 83. Taurus commands Pisces and beholds Virgo. Scorpio obeys Virgo and beholds Pisces. Neither tie joins Taurus to Scorpio.

Some scholars read these ties by exact degree instead, as Lilly did with his mirror points. We counted the couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points. For this pair, the count is zero. Both readings agree. The opposition is the only link.

How common this pair is

Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short run of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of time, 1600 to 2400 Rank among twelve.
Venus in Taurus 8.59 percent Second of twelve.
Venus in Scorpio 8.11 percent Eleventh of twelve.
Even split 8.33 percent One sign in twelve.

Over the long run, Scorpio is the second rarest sign for Venus, just ahead of Capricorn at 8.04 percent. Short spans of years give a different order. Our Venus in Scorpio page shows how the births of one recent span tilt the count.

Pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Taurus and the other Venus in Scorpio? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.39 percent, or about one couple in 72. That ranks 31st of the 78 Venus pairs.

Two birth windows with a gap on each side

Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Sun sign Share of Taurus Venus people Note.
Pisces 8.65 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Aries 28.68 percent Venus one sign ahead.
Taurus 24.03 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Gemini 29.92 percent The largest group.
Cancer 8.73 percent Venus two signs behind.
Sun sign Share of Scorpio Venus people Note.
Virgo 9.31 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Libra 29.72 percent The largest group.
Scorpio 23.48 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Sagittarius 28.39 percent Venus one sign behind.
Capricorn 9.11 percent Venus two signs behind.

The Taurus Venus list runs from Pisces to Cancer. The Scorpio Venus list runs from Virgo to Capricorn. No sign sits in both, so the partners never share a Sun sign.

In dates, Taurus Venus people are born between about February 19 and July 22. Scorpio Venus people are born between about August 23 and January 19. That leaves two gaps of about a month. One is the month of Leo. The other is the month of Aquarius. Nobody in this couple has a Leo Sun or an Aquarius Sun. Leo and Aquarius form the other fixed axis. So the Taurus and Scorpio line of the Venuses shuts out the Leo and Aquarius line of the Suns.

The likeliest Suns are air

Which Sun pair turns up most here? It is a Gemini Sun with the Taurus Venus and a Libra Sun with the Scorpio Venus. That covers 8.89 percent of these couples. No other Venus pair has this top Sun pair.

Here is the twist. The Venuses sit in earth and water, face to face. The top Suns sit in air, four signs apart, in a trine. So the most common form of this couple has a strained angle in the Venus layer and an easy one in the Sun layer. Next come Aries with Libra, at 8.52 percent, and Gemini with Sagittarius, at 8.49 percent. Both of those are Sun oppositions. Less than one couple in eleven fits the top mix, so treat it as a lean.

Angle between the two Suns Share of couples What it means.
Quincunx 38.2 percent Five signs apart, with no classic aspect.
Trine 25.5 percent An easy link, four signs apart.
Opposition 24.3 percent The Suns face each other, like the Venuses.
Square 10.5 percent A tense right angle.
Sextile 1.6 percent A friendly link, two signs apart.

Only one couple in four has its Suns opposite as well. For the other three, the Sun story differs from the Venus story. Read both.

Taurus and Scorpio by Sun sign: not the same couple

Many readers land here because they are a Taurus Sun and a Scorpio Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Among Taurus Venus people, 24.03 percent have a Taurus Sun. Among Scorpio Venus people, 23.48 percent have a Scorpio Sun. Across all signs, Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So for a Taurus Sun and a Scorpio Sun, a Venus in each partner’s own Sun sign fits roughly one couple in 18.

Turn it around. In 41.87 percent of Taurus Venus and Scorpio Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 25th of the 78 pairs. In 5.64 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.

The opposition in real degrees

A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses six signs apart can be anywhere from 150 to 210 degrees apart. The true opposition is 180. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.

Orb Couples with a true opposition Reading.
3 degrees 19.01 percent About one in five.
6 degrees 36.03 percent About one in three.
8 degrees 46.28 percent Just under half.
10 degrees 55.63 percent Just over half.

These values are almost the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. One detail is. Some pairs by sign turn into another aspect by degree. This one cannot. Between 150 and 210 degrees there is no other major aspect. So every couple in this pair has an opposition or nothing, never a hidden trine or square.

How the tradition reads this couple

None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.

  • Both hold on. Fixed signs keep what they choose. Loyalty comes easy to both.
  • Surface and depth. The Taurus Venus trusts what it can touch. The Scorpio Venus trusts what it has tested.
  • Calm and heat. Taurus wants peace at home. Scorpio wants the truth, even when it stings.
  • The sore spot. Both can dig in. A fight between two fixed signs can last.

An opposition is also a mirror. Each partner sees in the other the half they do not lead with. A practical habit helps. Let the Scorpio partner ask the hard question. Let the Taurus partner choose the quiet place to have the talk. Each then gets to love in their own way.

The same signs through other pairs

The other home-and-exile opposition is Libra and Aries, in Venus in Aries and Venus in Libra compatibility. A Scorpio Venus meets the other exiled Venus in Aries Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility.

A Taurus Venus meets a Venus in fall in Taurus Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility. It meets the other home of Venus in Taurus Venus and Libra Venus compatibility. With a Leo Venus, it forms a fixed square, in Taurus Venus and Leo Venus compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.

What the evidence says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.

So an opposition is not a warning, and a home rank is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.

How we measured

We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.

Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.

Frequently asked questions

Are Venus in Taurus and Venus in Scorpio compatible?

They form an opposition, which Ptolemy called disharmonious, and it puts Venus at home across from Venus in exile. At an 8 degree orb, 46.28 percent of these couples have a true opposition. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

How common is a Taurus Venus and Scorpio Venus couple?

About one couple in 72, or 1.39 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 31st of the 78 Venus pairs.

Can a Taurus Venus and a Scorpio Venus share a Sun sign?

No. A Taurus Venus goes with Suns from Pisces to Cancer. A Scorpio Venus goes with Suns from Virgo to Capricorn. The lists never meet, and neither includes Leo or Aquarius.

Which Sun signs are most likely in this couple?

A Gemini Sun with the Taurus Venus and a Libra Sun with the Scorpio Venus, in 8.89 percent of couples. Those two Suns form an air trine, while the Venuses stand opposite.

Is Venus weak in Scorpio?

The tradition calls it exile, since Scorpio faces Taurus, a home of Venus. Yet Ptolemy still makes Venus a co-ruler of the water triangle by day, so she keeps a seat there in day charts.
