Old astrology books call Venus in Scorpio her worst seat. The sign is her detriment — the term for a sign opposite one a planet rules, where its usual habits stop working. Venus rules Taurus. Scorpio sits across from Taurus. So the books mark it down.
We ran the numbers over eight centuries, from 1600 to 2400. Venus spends less time in Scorpio than in ten of the other eleven signs. Only Capricorn is rarer. But for people born from 1950 to 2010, the order flips. For them, Scorpio ranks second, behind Aries, Venus’s other place of detriment.
That is the puzzle this article solves. For most adults alive today, the sign the tradition calls a bad fit is one Venus visited far more than usual. The cause is not luck. It is a loop in the sky that repeats every eight years. From 1962 to 2042, it parks Venus in Scorpio for weeks at a stretch.
What Venus in Scorpio means, in plain words
A birth chart is a map of the sky at your birth. Think of it as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers a slice of life. The planets are the furniture. Venus is the piece that shows how you love, what you find lovely, and what you are willing to pay for it.
Scorpio is a water sign ruled by Mars in the old system and by Pluto in the modern one. Its keynote is depth. It wants what is hidden. It wants proof.
Put Venus there and you get a taste for the deep end. This Venus does not warm up over months of small talk. It reads the room, picks one person, and goes all in. It asks few questions out loud and draws firm conclusions anyway.
The cost is plain. A love built on proof needs proof again tomorrow. Jealousy is the shadow of that need. So is the long memory for a slight.
Why the tradition calls it exile
The idea starts with Claudius Ptolemy, the Greek writer whose Tetrabiblos (around 150 AD) set the frame for Western astrology. Ptolemy gave each of the five planets two homes. Venus keeps Taurus and Libra. He gave no name to the signs across from them, Scorpio and Aries. Later writers called those seats her detriment, or exile.
Paired with a Leo Venus, that exile meets a fixed square, and Leo Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility shows that Leo commands it only by degree.
Vettius Valens, an astrologer of the same era, read a planet in that state as a guest in a house with rules it did not write. The guest still acts. It just acts on terms set by someone else.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, printed in London in 1647, still counted detriment among the weaknesses of a planet. A planet there is not helpless. It is simply on its own.
That is the honest reading. Venus in Scorpio is not broken. She is working in a sign that rewards a set of moves she does not favour. Libra Venus asks what keeps the peace. Scorpio asks what is true under the peace. Those are different jobs.
The measurement: how common is Venus in Scorpio?
Here is the method, so you can repeat it. We used astronomy-engine, a free, open code library for planet positions. We stepped through every hour from 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400. That is 7,012,656 readings. For each one we noted the sign Venus was in. We used the tropical zodiac, the one nearly all Western astrologers use.
We then checked it a second way. We found the exact moment of each of the 10,142 times Venus changed sign in those 800 years. Then we added up the time between them. Both routes agree to within a thousandth of a point.
We also ran the same hourly scan on 1950 to 2010 alone. Those are the birth years of most adults today. Here are both results, ranked by the long window.
| Rank, 1600-2400 | Sign | Share of the time, 1600-2400 | Share of the time, 1950-2010 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cancer | 8.62 percent | 7.85 percent. |
| 2 | Taurus | 8.59 percent | 7.17 percent. |
| 3 | Gemini | 8.46 percent | 9.39 percent. |
| 4 | Leo | 8.46 percent | 8.38 percent. |
| 5 | Virgo | 8.41 percent | 9.19 percent. |
| 6 | Libra | 8.32 percent | 6.98 percent. |
| 7 | Pisces | 8.32 percent | 7.04 percent. |
| 8 | Aries | 8.29 percent | 10.29 percent. |
| 9 | Sagittarius | 8.23 percent | 6.92 percent. |
| 10 | Aquarius | 8.16 percent | 8.89 percent. |
| 11 | Scorpio | 8.11 percent | 9.82 percent. |
| 12 | Capricorn | 8.04 percent | 8.08 percent. |
Read the long column first. Over 1600 to 2400, Venus spreads her time almost evenly. Every sign gets between 8.04 and 8.62 percent. Scorpio ranks eleventh at 8.11. Only Capricorn is lower. Her two homes sit near the top: Taurus second, Libra sixth.
Now read the short column. From 1950 to 2010, Scorpio jumps to second at 9.82, behind Aries. Venus’s two seats of exile, Aries and Scorpio, hold the top two ranks. Libra falls to eleventh. Taurus sits ninth.
For couples born in that span, it made one pair unusually common, as Aries Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility shows.
Over the full 800 years, a Scorpio Venus paired with a Pisces Venus makes the rarest of the twelve Venus trines, as Scorpio Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility shows.
In days: over 1600 to 2400, Venus spends about 29.6 days a year in Scorpio and 30.4 in Libra. From 1950 to 2010, the figures were 35.9 days in Scorpio and 25.5 in Libra. That is ten extra days a year in the sign the books call her worst.
So for this generation, the doctrine and the clock point opposite ways. Something in the orbit is doing this.
The cause: Venus turns around in Scorpio
Now the part almost nobody publishes.
Planets sometimes look as if they move backwards against the stars. That is what retrograde means. Nothing reverses in space. Earth and the other planet are on separate tracks at separate speeds, and for a few weeks we overtake the view. A car on the next lane seems to slide back when you pass it.
A station is the moment a planet stops and turns. Venus stations retrograde roughly every nineteen months. Around each station she crawls. She can hold the same few degrees for weeks.
We counted every Venus station from 1 January 1950 to 1 January 2010, the same birth years as above. There are 76. Half are retrograde stations, when Venus stops and turns back. Half are direct stations, when she stops and moves forward again. Here is where they fall.
| Sign | Venus stations, 1950-2010 |
|---|---|
| Aries | 14: 7 retrograde, 7 direct. |
| Scorpio | 13: 6 retrograde, 7 direct. |
| Aquarius | 10: 8 retrograde, 2 direct. |
| Gemini | 9: 2 retrograde, 7 direct. |
| Virgo | 9: 8 retrograde, 1 direct. |
| Leo | 7: all direct. |
| Capricorn | 6: all direct. |
| Cancer | 5: all retrograde. |
| Taurus | 1: retrograde. |
| Sagittarius | 1: retrograde. |
| Pisces | 1: direct. |
| Libra | None. |
Aries and Scorpio hold 27 of the 76 stations. That is more than a third, shared by two signs out of twelve. Libra, a sign Venus rules, holds none at all.
The link is now clear. In this era, the two signs where Venus turns around are the two signs where she lingers. They are also the two signs the old books call her exile. That match belongs to our era, not to the sky for good. Over 1600 to 2400, Scorpio gets 37 of Venus’s 500 retrograde stations and 38 of her 501 direct ones, fewer than its even share. The doctrine came from a chain of thought about opposites, not from the clock.
Here are the eleven retrograde stations in Scorpio from 1962 to 2042, with dates in UTC:
23 October 1962 · 20 October 1970 · 18 October 1978 · 15 October 1986 · 13 October 1994 · 10 October 2002 · 8 October 2010 · 5 October 2018 · 3 October 2026 · 30 September 2034 · 28 September 2042.
Look at the gaps: eight years each time, and the date creeps back by two or three days. That is Venus’s famous eight-year rhythm. Five Venus cycles fit almost exactly into eight Earth years, so the pattern repeats in the same patch of sky. It also explains why the stations drift slowly out of Scorpio. By the 2100s this list will run dry, and another sign will take the load.
If you want the mechanics of a planet turning backwards, and what it means in a birth chart, we cover it in our guide to retrograde planets in the natal chart.
How long a visit lasts
Across 1950 to 2050, Venus made 106 separate stays in Scorpio. The average stay ran 32.2 days. The shortest ran 23.9 days. The longest ran 122.1 days.
That spread is the whole story. A plain pass takes about 24 days. A pass with a station in it takes four or five times as long.
The record holder started on 7 September 1978 and ended on 7 January 1979. Venus sat in Scorpio for four months. Anyone born in that window has a Scorpio Venus, and so does a large slice of everyone born in the months either side.
Exact dates: 2026 to 2029
All dates in this section are in UTC. Venus entered Scorpio on 10 September 2026. She turns retrograde there on 3 October 2026, at 8.5 degrees of the sign. Then she backs out into Libra on 25 October and turns forward again on 14 November, at 22.9 degrees of Libra. She re-enters Scorpio on 4 December 2026 and leaves for good on 7 January 2027.
| Window | Dates | Length |
|---|---|---|
| First pass | 10 Sep – 25 Oct 2026 | 45.0 days |
| Second pass | 4 Dec 2026 – 7 Jan 2027 | 34.0 days |
| Ordinary pass | 8 Oct – 1 Nov 2027 | 24.1 days |
| Ordinary pass | 21 Nov – 15 Dec 2028 | 24.1 days |
| Ordinary pass | 10 Sep – 7 Oct 2029 | 26.7 days |
Add the two 2026 windows: 79 days. Compare that with the 24 days of 2027. A single retrograde loop more than triples the count.
Multiply that by eleven loops from 1962 to 2042 and you have the whole answer. Venus in Scorpio was common for births from 1950 to 2010 because Venus kept stopping there.
Which Sun signs can have it
Venus never strays far from the Sun. From Earth she stays within about 47 degrees of it. Since 47 degrees is a little over a sign and a half, your Venus sits in your Sun sign or in one of the two signs on either side.
So only five Sun signs can carry a Scorpio Venus: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn. The other seven cannot, at any birth date.
Our hourly scan of 1600 to 2400 gives the split. Of everyone born with Venus in Scorpio, 29.7 out of every hundred are Libra Suns, 28.4 are Sagittarius Suns, 23.5 are Scorpio Suns, 9.3 are Virgo Suns and 9.1 are Capricorn Suns.
Turn it the other way and it reads better. Over 1600 to 2400, about 29 in every 100 Libra Suns have Venus in Scorpio. So do about 28 in 100 Sagittarius Suns and 23 in 100 Scorpio Suns. For Virgo and Capricorn Suns the figure drops to about one in eleven. For those born from 1950 to 2010, the first three figures rise to about one in three.
That matters for Libra Suns. Over the long window, more than one Libra in four has a Venus that acts nothing like the Libra script. For Libras born from 1950 to 2010, it is one in three. If the light, easy, peace-first portrait never fit you, this is a likely reason.
What it looks like in a life
Robert Hand, in Planets in Transit, reads this Venus as one that will not spend itself on the shallow end. Liz Greene, who brought depth psychology into astrology, reads Scorpio placements as a demand for contact that survives the truth. Both point at the same thing from different sides.
In practice, three habits show up.
The slow yes. This Venus takes a long time to commit and then commits hard. The delay is not coldness. It is testing.
The private ledger. Scorpio Venus keeps a quiet account of who gave what. Kindness is logged. So is a broken promise. The account is rarely read aloud.
The taste for the real. In art, in clothes, in a home, this Venus picks the piece with a history over the piece that is merely pretty. Dark colours, worn textures, one strong object rather than ten light ones.
Demetra George, who has done much to bring old Greek texts back into use, warns against reading detriment as a verdict. The term describes a job, not a sentence. Chris Brennan makes the same point in Hellenistic Astrology: the old writers rated conditions, and a planet in a hard condition still delivers, at a price it names itself.
The price here is simple. Depth costs time and it costs risk. Venus in Scorpio pays both and expects the same back.
Paired with a Taurus Venus, it sits straight across from Venus at home, as our page on Taurus Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility shows.
With a Gemini Venus, Ptolemy saw no tie at all, as Gemini Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility explains.
With a Libra Venus next door, Venus steps from home into exile, and Libra Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility finds no tie by either reading of Ptolemy.
With a Cancer Venus, the water trine comes with Suns that match in only one couple in 124, as Cancer Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility shows.
Next door, Scorpio Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility joins this exile to a Venus with no major rank, in two signs Ptolemy called averted.
Two Scorpio Venuses make the second-rarest of the 78 Venus pairs, about one couple in 152, as Scorpio Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility shows.
With a Virgo Venus, a sextile joins a fall to an exile, and Virgo Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility shows that Venus still shares rule by day in both signs.
Where it sits in your chart matters more than the sign
The sign says how you love. The room says where. A Scorpio Venus in the room of money reads very differently from one in the room of shared life.
The eighth room is the classic pairing, since it covers shared money, deep bonds and what people hand over to each other. Our guide to Venus in the eighth house works through that overlap.
It also helps to read the opposite case. Venus in the sign she rules is the cleanest form of the same planet, and holding the two side by side sharpens both. See our guide to Venus in Libra.
Frequently asked questions
Is Venus in Scorpio a bad placement?
No. It is a hard one. The tradition calls it detriment because Scorpio is opposite Taurus, a sign Venus rules. Ptolemy set out her homes around 150 AD; the name detriment comes later, from writers such as William Lilly in 1647. It describes a planet working outside its own rules, not a planet failing.
Why does Venus struggle in Scorpio?
Venus wants ease, balance and pleasure. Scorpio wants proof, depth and control. Neither goal is wrong. They just pull against each other, so the person carrying both has to choose, over and over.
How rare is Venus in Scorpio?
Fairly rare. Our hourly scan of 1600 to 2400 puts Venus in Scorpio 8.11 out of every hundred hours. That ranks eleventh of the twelve signs, ahead of only Capricorn. Births from 1950 to 2010 are different. For them, the figure is 9.82 out of every hundred hours, second behind Aries.
How many times does Venus go retrograde in Scorpio?
From 1950 to 2010, Venus stopped in Scorpio 13 times: 6 retrograde stations and 7 direct ones, out of 76 in all. Only Aries had more, with 14. Libra had none. Over 1600 to 2400, Scorpio gets 37 of Venus’s 500 retrograde stations.
When is Venus in Scorpio next?
Venus is in Scorpio from 10 September to 25 October 2026, then again from 4 December 2026 to 7 January 2027. After that: 8 October to 1 November 2027, and 21 November to 15 December 2028.
What Sun signs can have Venus in Scorpio?
Five: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn. Venus never moves more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so she stays within one sign and a half of it.
What is Venus in Scorpio attracted to?
Depth and honesty over charm. This Venus notices what a person hides, and finds the hidden part more interesting than the polished one. Small talk is a hurdle, not a bridge.
Read your own chart, not the label
The label says exile. Over eight centuries, the clock says second-rarest. For births from 1950 to 2010, it said second place. The reason is a loop in the sky that turns Venus around in this sign eleven times from 1962 to 2042.
What that loop did in your own chart depends on the degree, the room and the aspects around it. An Astrovision reading works those out from your birth date, time and place, and gives you the result as a written guide and a spoken one you can listen to.
