Venus rules Taurus. In old astrology that is the top of the ladder. A planet sitting in the sign it rules is in its domicile — its own house, where it works with no friction. So Venus in Taurus should be the common, easy, safe seat.
Over the long run, it is also one of the most common seats Venus has.
I measured Venus across the 800 years from 1600 to 2400. It spends 8.59% of that time in Taurus. Only Cancer, at 8.62%, beats it. Aries gets 8.29% and Scorpio 8.11%. Those two are the signs of Venus in detriment: the signs facing the ones it rules, where the old texts put it at its weakest. So over 800 years, the best seat is a little more common than the worst ones.
People born from 1950 to 2010 got a very different mix. For them, Venus in Taurus was scarce: 7.16% of that window, against 10.23% for Aries.
That is not bad luck. It is geometry, and you can check it yourself. Here is how.
Taurus is Venus at home — what that means
Think of a birth chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers a slice of life. The planets are the furniture, and each one behaves better in some rooms than in others.
Greek and Roman astrologers built a small league table for this, called dignity: a score for how well placed a planet is. Ptolemy set it out in the Tetrabiblos, in the second century. A planet in its own sign is strong. A planet in the sign across the wheel is weak. Two other rungs sit in between: exaltation, a guest sign where the planet is honoured, and fall, the sign facing that one.
For Venus the table reads like this. Home: Taurus and Libra. Guest of honour: Pisces. Weakest: Aries and Scorpio. In the pit: Virgo.
Taurus is the earthy half of Venus. Libra is the airy half. William Lilly, writing in London in 1647, gave Venus in her own sign a plain reading: she keeps her promises, and she wants the thing she wants for a long time. Vettius Valens, some fifteen centuries earlier, tied Venus to desire, marriage and gold. Taurus is where that list turns solid — food you can taste, cloth you can feel, money you can count.
Robert Hand made the useful modern point: a strong planet is not a nice planet. Strength means the planet gets its way. Venus in Taurus gets its way about comfort. Whether that is charm or stubborn greed is the story of the chart, not the sign.
I measured 800 years. Here is the full table.
The method is simple, and worth stating so you can repeat it. I stepped through time every two hours, from 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400. At each step I asked an ephemeris — a table of planet positions — where Venus was. Then I sorted by sign. As a check, I timed each of Venus’s sign changes to the second and added up the stays. The two routes agree to within 0.002 points. I ran the same sweep, hour by hour, on 1950 to 2010. The engine was astronomy-engine, on the tropical zodiac, the one used across Western astrology.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600-2400 | Share of time, 1950-2010 | Dignity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancer | 8.62% | 7.83% | None. |
| Taurus | 8.59% | 7.16% | Home. |
| Gemini | 8.46% | 9.35% | None. |
| Leo | 8.46% | 8.36% | None. |
| Virgo | 8.41% | 9.16% | Fall. |
| Libra | 8.32% | 7.11% | Home. |
| Pisces | 8.32% | 7.04% | Exaltation. |
| Aries | 8.29% | 10.23% | Detriment. |
| Sagittarius | 8.23% | 6.80% | None. |
| Aquarius | 8.16% | 8.85% | None. |
| Scorpio | 8.11% | 10.07% | Detriment. |
| Capricorn | 8.04% | 8.03% | None. |
Read the two columns side by side. Over 800 years the spread is narrow. Every sign sits between 8.04% and 8.62%, and Taurus comes second. Both weak signs sit in the bottom half. The 1950-2010 column swings much wider, from 6.80% to 10.23%. There, both weak signs sit at the top. Three of the four signs at the bottom are ones where Venus is strong: both homes, plus the sign where it is honoured.
So Venus in Taurus is scarce only in the recent window. For births from 1950 to 2010, it is bottom four out of twelve, and 30% scarcer than Aries. Over 800 years, it is the second most common Venus sign.
Why Venus in Taurus was scarce from 1950 to 2010
Two facts explain the whole table.
Fact one: Venus never strays far from the Sun. Venus orbits inside our own orbit, so from Earth it looks pinned to the Sun. Across the years 2000 to 2054 the widest gap I measured was 47.23 degrees. That is a shade over a sign and a half. Venus is the bright evening star, then the bright morning star, and never a midnight object.
Fact two: Venus loops. Every 584 days Venus passes between us and the Sun. Near that pass it slows, appears to walk backwards for about six weeks, then goes forward again. Backwards motion is what astrologers call retrograde — the planet is not truly reversing, we are simply overtaking it on the inside track.
Five of those loops fit almost exactly into eight years. So the loops do not wander. They park over five zones of the zodiac and stay there for a century at a time. And in a loop zone Venus crawls. Where it crawls, it piles up days — and days are what turn into birth charts.
I counted every Venus retrograde turn between 1950 and 2050 and sorted them by sign:
- Aries: 12 turns
- Scorpio: 11 turns
- Virgo: 9 turns
- Aquarius: 8 turns
- Gemini: 7 turns
- Cancer and Capricorn: 5 each
- Leo: 4
- Taurus: 1
- Sagittarius: 1
- Libra and Pisces: none at all
Now lay that list beside the 1950-2010 column above. Aries and Scorpio hold the loops, and they hold the crowds. Libra and Pisces hold no loops, and they sit near the bottom. Taurus has had a single retrograde turn in a hundred years.
So the answer is dull and beautiful at once. In our era, Venus sprints through Taurus. It has no loop there to linger in.
The loops do not stay put forever, though. The pattern slips about 2.3 degrees every eight years. Over 800 years, each loop travels some 230 degrees, and together the five loops cross every sign. That is why the 800-year column is so flat. What is left is a small tilt from Earth’s own orbit. Venus stays close to the Sun, and the Sun moves slowest in early July. So Cancer comes top and Capricorn comes last. Strength and scarcity have nothing to do with each other.
Which Sun signs can have Venus in Taurus
The 47-degree leash decides this too. Your Sun sign fixes a narrow window for Venus. Out of the whole zodiac, only five Sun signs can carry Venus in Taurus at all.
| Sun sign | Odds of Venus in Taurus, 1600-2400 | Share of all Venus-in-Taurus time, 1600-2400 |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 29.96% | 29.92%. |
| Aries | 29.54% | 28.68%. |
| Taurus | 24.35% | 24.03%. |
| Pisces | 9.05% | 8.64%. |
| Cancer | 8.70% | 8.72%. |
If your Sun is in Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius, your Venus is not in Taurus. It cannot be. No chart is needed to rule it out.
The other surprise is in the first two rows. A Gemini or Aries Sun is more likely to hold Venus in Taurus than a Taurus Sun is. Air or fire on the outside, earth underneath: fast to want, slow to let go. If you have a Taurus Sun, the pairing doubles down instead, and the Taurus Sun reading and the Venus reading start to say the same things twice.
Venus sits in Taurus for about one Taurus Sun in four, a figure we measure in our guide to the Taurus sign.
When Venus is in Taurus: exact dates, 2026 to 2029
Venus crosses Taurus fast. Over the thirty-one passes between 2000 and 2030, the shortest took 24.3 days and the longest 30.0, for an average of 25.9 days. Compare that with a retrograde stay in Aries, which runs past four months.
Here are the exact crossings, computed to the hour in universal time:
| Enters Taurus | Leaves for Gemini | Days |
|---|---|---|
| 30 March 2026, 16:00 | 24 April 2026, 04:02 | 24.5 |
| 14 May 2027, 21:01 | 8 June 2027, 12:31 | 24.6 |
| 4 March 2028, 20:00 | 3 April 2028, 20:27 | 30.0 |
| 14 April 2029, 05:06 | 8 May 2029, 12:46 | 24.3 |
The 2026 window has already closed. The next one opens on 14 May 2027. The 2028 pass is the long one of the four, at a full thirty days, because Venus is slower there in its cycle.
These windows are the practical part. A Venus transit — the live planet crossing a point in your birth chart — is short and gentle. Twenty-five days is a season of shopping, not a life event. Buy the coat, book the table, repaint the room, say the thing you have been sitting on. Then it moves to Gemini and the mood turns chatty.
The Venus retrograde in Taurus that stopped happening
This one deserves its own heading, because it is the sort of fact that gets stated wrongly everywhere.
Venus turned retrograde in Taurus seven times in the twentieth century: 7 April 1905, 5 April 1913, 2 April 1921, 31 March 1929, 29 March 1937, 26 March 1945 and 24 March 1953.
Look at the dates. Eight years apart, and roughly two days earlier each time. That is the five-loop pattern drifting slowly backwards through the calendar. After 1953 it drifted out of Taurus altogether — into Aries, where it has stayed ever since.
I scanned every Venus retrograde turn from 1900 to 2050. There is not one more in Taurus after March 1953. So if you were born after that date, your Venus in Taurus is a direct, forward-moving Venus. Full stop. Anyone born with a retrograde Venus in Taurus is at least seventy-three years old.
The next retrograde spell in Taurus is a short one. Venus turns back in Gemini, re-enters Taurus on 10 June 2044, and turns forward there on 18 June (UTC). It leaves for Gemini again on 26 June.
Chris Brennan, in Hellenistic Astrology, makes the case that these cycles were the backbone of ancient practice long before anyone drew a psychological meaning from them. The pentagram Venus traces across the sky over eight years was known, and admired, well before Ptolemy wrote it down.
What Venus in Taurus does in a birth chart
Venus governs what you find lovely and what you find worth paying for. In Taurus it wants both to be real, and to last.
The plain reading: slow to warm, hard to shift once warm. Taste that runs to quality over novelty. A body-first sense of pleasure — food, scent, fabric, weight, warmth. A strong link between feeling safe and feeling loved, which is why money and affection can get tangled here.
Liz Greene reads Venus as the part of us that knows its own worth. In Taurus that self-worth attaches to solid things, and a shaky bank balance can read as a shaky heart. That is the placement’s soft spot, and naming it is more useful than praising the good taste.
Demetra George draws the other line worth drawing. Hellenistic astrologers judged Venus by condition and by the room it sits in, not by the sign alone. Venus in Taurus in the second room, the room of money, is one story. Venus in Taurus in the twelfth, the hidden room, is a very different one.
Venus in Taurus in a woman’s chart
Venus here describes how she draws people in, and what she will not trade away. The style is low-key and expensive-looking: few pieces, good ones, worn again and again. Warmth arrives on a slow schedule. Loyalty, once given, is close to immovable. The cost of that is a long tolerance for a situation that has stopped working.
Venus in Taurus in a man’s chart
The old texts read Venus in a man’s chart as a picture of what attracts him. Taurus points to steadiness, a calm voice, good food, a settled home. He courts slowly and openly, without games. He is also possessive, and the honest version of that word is jealous. Mars in Taurus in the same chart doubles the trait, and the two placements are easy to confuse.
Love, matches, and the fight this placement picks
Venus signs get along by element. Taurus is earth, so Virgo and Capricorn Venus feel like home, and the water signs — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — feed it well.
Our page on Taurus Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility counts how common that earth trine is.
The hard one is Venus in Scorpio, straight across the wheel. Both want to keep. One keeps by holding on, the other by going deep and testing. That pairing is either the long one or the loud one.
Air Venus signs — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius — move faster than Taurus can follow. The fight is never about love. It is about pace, and about whether a plan can change on Thursday.
Libra is the odd case, since Venus rules it too, as Taurus Venus and Libra Venus compatibility explains.
Fire moves faster still, and Aries Venus and Taurus Venus compatibility looks at the partner whose Venus sits next door, in exile.
Water slows the pace instead, and Taurus Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility looks at a partner whose Venus is exalted, two signs away.
Earth is the easy match, and Taurus Venus and Capricorn Venus compatibility shows why the likeliest Suns in that couple are air signs.
Two Taurus Venuses share one home, and Taurus Venus and Taurus Venus compatibility finds that most of their Suns fall in Aries or Gemini.
Two signs further on, Taurus Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility covers the most common Venus pair of all, about 1 couple in 67.
Is Venus in Taurus good or bad?
By the old scoring, it is the best Venus can do. Ptolemy’s table has no rung above home. If you want the counterpart question answered: the weakest seats for Venus are Aries and Scorpio, with Virgo the sign of its fall.
But strong does not mean easy, and the recent data points at why. Since 1953, Venus has moved through Taurus quickly and cleanly, with no loop, no reversal, no second pass. The placement inherits that quality. It does not double back. It does not review. It decides what it loves and then stays.
That is a gift for building a life. It is a problem for leaving one.
Questions people ask
How rare is Venus in Taurus?
Over the 800 years from 1600 to 2400, Venus is in Taurus 8.59% of the time. That ranks second of the twelve signs, just behind Cancer. For births from 1950 to 2010, it drops to 7.16%, in the bottom four.
Who is Venus in Taurus attracted to?
People who are calm, consistent and physically present. Sensory quality counts for a lot: voice, cooking, scent, touch. Drama and sudden changes of plan are the turn-off.
What is the love language of Venus in Taurus?
Touch and gifts, with steady time close behind. Words alone land lightest here.
What does Venus in Taurus mean in 2026?
Venus was in Taurus from 30 March to 24 April 2026. That window is closed. The next one runs 14 May to 8 June 2027.
Can a Leo have Venus in Taurus?
No. Venus never travels more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, which puts Taurus out of reach for a Leo Sun. Only Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and Pisces Suns can hold it.
Is Venus ever retrograde in Taurus?
Not since 1953. The last retrograde turn in Taurus came on 24 March 1953, after turns in 1905, 1913, 1921, 1929, 1937 and 1945. The next spell is brief: from 10 to 26 June 2044 (UTC), Venus backs in from Gemini and turns forward in Taurus.
