Taurus Venus and Cancer Venus Compatibility: No Other Venus Pair Is More Common

Taurus Venus and Cancer Venus compatibility is the most common Venus match there is. Pick two strangers at random, and about 1 couple in 67 has this pair. No other pair of Venus signs, out of 78, turns up more.

The two signs sit two steps apart, a friendly angle called a sextile. Venus is at home in Taurus, the sign it rules. In Cancer, Venus is a guest of the Moon. And the Moon, by old tradition, is exalted in Taurus.

This page explains why the pair is so common, what the old rules say about it, and which Sun signs these partners are born under. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

The pair at a glance

Question What we found.
How common is the pair? About 1 random couple in 67, rank 1 of the 78 Venus pairs.
How far apart are the signs? Two signs, a gap called a sextile.
Did Ptolemy link the two signs? Yes, he counted the sextile as a friendly aspect.
Where is each Venus strong? At home in Taurus, with no rank in Cancer.
Which Sun signs are most likely? One Gemini Sun and one Cancer Sun, in about 1 couple in 10.
Do the partners share a Sun sign? In about 1 couple in 8.

Why no Venus pair is more common

Venus does not spend the same time in every sign. Over 800 years, it spends 8.62 percent of the time in Cancer. That is the most of any sign. Taurus comes second, at 8.59 percent. Capricorn comes last, at 8.04 percent.

The odds for a pair of strangers multiply those shares. Two signs near the top give the highest result. So Taurus and Cancer, the top two, make the most common pair of different signs.

The main reason sits in Earth’s orbit. Earth moves slowest in early July, when it is farthest from the Sun. So from here, the Sun spends the most days in Gemini and Cancer. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. So it lingers near those signs too.

Venus pair How common.
Taurus and Cancer 1 couple in 67.5, the most common.
Gemini and Cancer 1 couple in 68.5, second.
Cancer and Leo 1 couple in 68.6, third.
Taurus and Gemini 1 couple in 68.8, fourth.
Scorpio and Capricorn 1 couple in 76.7, the rarest pair of different signs.
Capricorn and Capricorn 1 couple in 155, the rarest of all.

Keep the scale in mind. The gap between the most common and the rarest mixed pair is small. Same-sign pairs sit lower only because there is one way to form them, not two. So “most common” is a true rank, but not a big edge. It is also the most common of the 12 sextile pairs.

A Venus at home next to a guest of the Moon

Each sign has a ruling planet. Think of it as the landlord of the sign. A planet in a sign it rules is at home and acts in its own way. A planet in another sign is a guest and takes on the tone of its host.

Venus rules Taurus and Libra. So a Taurus Venus answers to no one. The old books tie it to comfort, touch, patience and things that last. Our page on Venus in Taurus tells that side in full.

The Moon rules Cancer. So a Cancer Venus loves in the manner of the Moon. It cares by feeding, sheltering and remembering. Read Venus in Cancer for that side.

Venus has no major rank in Cancer. It is not at home there, and not exalted, the word for a sign of special honor. It is not in exile or in fall, the two weak ranks, either. Astrologers call this state peregrine, a Latin word for a traveler. Venus does hold a few degrees of Cancer as its terms, a minor share of rule.

Here is the neat part. Ptolemy set the exaltations in Book I, chapter 19 of the Tetrabiblos. He put the Moon’s exaltation in Taurus. So the landlord of the Cancer Venus is honored in the sign of the Taurus Venus. Each partner’s Venus has a strong friend in the pair.

Question Taurus Venus Cancer Venus.
Who rules the sign? Venus itself The Moon.
What is the rank of Venus there? Home, full strength No major rank, a guest.
How does the landlord fare in the other sign? Venus is a guest in Cancer The Moon is exalted in Taurus.
What element? Earth Water.
What mode? Fixed, a sign that holds a season Cardinal, a sign that starts a season.
How much time does Venus spend there? 8.59 percent, second of twelve 8.62 percent, first of twelve.

A sextile, by the old rules

An aspect is an angle between two points on the wheel. Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 13, he counted four aspects. He called the trine and the sextile harmonious. He called the square and the opposition discordant.

Signs two steps apart form a sextile, an angle of 60 degrees. So Taurus and Cancer share a friendly aspect. That puts them in a different class from next-door signs, which Ptolemy left with no bond.

The elements agree. Taurus is earth, and Cancer is water. The old books pair these two elements, since both count as feminine, or receptive, signs. Earth gives water a shape, and water keeps earth alive.

The modes differ. Cancer is cardinal, which means it opens a season. It starts summer at the longest day. Taurus is fixed, which means it holds a season. It sits in the middle of spring. So one partner starts things, and the other keeps them going.

Ptolemy had two more ways to link signs, by mirror images across the spring point or the longest day. Taurus and Cancer get neither of those ties. Their bond is the sextile itself.

How close are the two Venus points?

A sign is 30 degrees wide. So a Taurus Venus and a Cancer Venus can sit anywhere from about 30 to 90 degrees apart. By sign, every such couple has a sextile. By degree, only some do.

Astrologers allow an orb, which is the miss they accept around an exact angle. Here is the share of couples whose two Venus points fall within each orb of an exact 60 degrees.

Allowed miss Share of couples.
Within 3 degrees 19.0 percent.
Within 6 degrees 36.1 percent.
Within 8 degrees 46.3 percent.
Within 10 degrees 55.7 percent.

So fewer than half of these couples have a true sextile at a common orb of 8 degrees. That share is close to the same for every pair of signs, so it is not special to this one.

At the far edge, the picture flips. Take a Venus at 2 degrees Taurus and one at 29 degrees Cancer. They sit 87 degrees apart. By degree, that is close to a square, a harsh angle, even though the signs form a sextile. That turns up within 8 degrees for 3.6 percent of couples.

A birth date is enough to find the Venus degree to within a degree or so. Venus never moves more than about a degree and a quarter in a day.

The Sun signs behind each Venus

Venus orbits inside the Earth’s path. From here, it never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. So your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one of the four signs closest to it.

We turned that around. Among people with Venus in a given sign, which Sun signs do they have? The table gives the share for each one.

Sun sign People with Venus in Taurus People with Venus in Cancer.
Pisces 8.7 percent None.
Aries 28.7 percent None.
Taurus 24.0 percent 8.3 percent.
Gemini 29.9 percent 29.3 percent.
Cancer 8.7 percent 24.1 percent.
Leo None 29.7 percent.
Virgo None 8.7 percent.

Gemini sits in the middle of both columns. It is the top Sun sign for a Taurus Venus, and a close second for a Cancer Venus. So the Gemini Sun is the hinge of this pair.

Most likely Sun pairs Share of these couples.
One Gemini Sun and one Cancer Sun 9.8 percent.
One Taurus Sun and one Gemini Sun 9.5 percent.
One Gemini Sun and one Leo Sun 8.9 percent.
Two Gemini Suns 8.8 percent.
One Aries Sun and one Leo Sun 8.5 percent.

The top mix covers only about 1 couple in 10. So it is a lean, not a rule. The first four rows all include a Gemini Sun, even though neither Venus is in Gemini.

When the two share a Sun sign

Both partners can be Taurus, Gemini or Cancer Suns. Taken together, 12.9 percent of these couples share a Sun sign. That is about 1 couple in 8. Two Gemini Suns make up most of it, at 8.8 percent. Two Cancer Suns come to 2.1 percent, and two Taurus Suns to 2.0 percent.

The spread of Sun gaps is wide. The Suns are one sign apart in 24.3 percent of these couples, and two signs apart in 25.3 percent. In a rare 0.8 percent, the Suns even sit opposite. That means a Pisces Sun with the Taurus Venus and a Virgo Sun with the Cancer Venus.

One more count. In 42.3 percent of these couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks second of the 78 pairs. Our Venus sign compatibility guide shows the other side of this link, from the Sun signs to the Venus signs.

How the tradition reads this pair

In the old books, Venus stands for what we find lovely and how we show care. The sign colors that style.

Where the pair flows

Both partners care through the home. The Taurus Venus shows love with food, touch, comfort and money well kept. The Cancer Venus shows love with shelter, memory and close attention to mood. Both value what lasts over what dazzles.

The rulers help. Venus and the Moon are both night planets in the old scheme, and both count as gentle, or benefic. The Moon is exalted in Taurus. So the two love styles share a root in comfort and safety.

Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo read a Venus through its element. Earth loves by building. Water loves by feeling. In the old picture, the two fit like a riverbank and a river.

Where it snags

The friction is about pace and mood. The Taurus Venus wants things to stay the same. The Cancer Venus rides the tides of feeling, as its ruler the Moon changes shape each night. What feels steady to one partner can feel flat to the other.

The modes add a second strain. Cancer starts things, and Taurus holds on. So one partner pushes for a change in the home, and the other digs in. A couple that names this split can plan change at a pace both can bear.

What the evidence says

No study has tested Venus pairs. The best test of love signs used the Sun. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors on the forms.

So read the Taurus and Cancer Venus match as a way to talk about comfort and care. It is not a verdict on a couple. Being the most common pair says nothing about how well it works. The odds on this page are odds about the sky, not about love.

How we measured it

All figures cover 1 January 1600 to 1 January 2400, in the tropical zodiac, seen from the center of the Earth. Every moment of birth counts the same. A long window matters, since Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle and a short span can skew the shares.

Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every change of sign for Venus and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then summed the time in each state exactly. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris, a separate set of planet math, with Venus and the Sun placed once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes. That gave just over 7 million moments. The two routes agree within 0.01 of a point on every Venus figure here, and both put this pair first.

The couple odds pair two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun mixes combine the Sun shares of each Venus sign. The degree shares use the true spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Real couples are born close in time, so treat these as odds for strangers.

Questions about Taurus and Cancer Venus

Are Taurus Venus and Cancer Venus compatible?

By the old rules, the signs form a sextile, which Ptolemy counted as a friendly aspect. Earth and water are also a classic match. Still, no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

What is the most common Venus sign pair?

Taurus and Cancer, at about 1 random couple in 67. Cancer and Taurus are the two signs where Venus spends the most time. The edge over other pairs is small, since the twelve Venus signs are close to equal.

Is Venus weak in Cancer?

No. Venus has no major rank in Cancer, so astrologers call it peregrine, a guest in the Moon’s sign. It is not in exile or in fall. It loves in the style of its host, through care and shelter.

What Sun signs do Taurus Venus and Cancer Venus partners have?

The likeliest mix is one Gemini Sun and one Cancer Sun, in about 1 couple in 10. The Gemini Sun is the hinge of the pair. The partners share a Sun sign in about 1 couple in 8.

Is a Taurus and Cancer Venus pair always a sextile?

By sign, yes. By degree, no. The two points sit within 8 degrees of an exact sextile in 46.3 percent of couples. At the far edge, they can come close to a square instead.
