Venus in astrology: the planet of love and its glyph over a natal chart wheel

Venus in Astrology: Beyond the Planet of Love

Venus is sold as the planet of love. That is true. It is not the whole story. The same planet rules what you find beautiful, what you agree to pay for, and what you call good taste. It governs money as much as romance. This page is about the planet itself, not about any one placement.

It also carries numbers almost nobody publishes. How far can Venus travel from the Sun? How many people are born with it moving backwards? What is the five-pointed figure it draws in the sky every eight years? We calculated all three. The method is written into the text, so you can check it.

What Does Venus Represent in Astrology?

Venus represents value. That single word covers everything else on the list.

Money is value you can count. Beauty is value you can see. Love is value you place in another person. Taste is value you place in objects. Fairness is value shared between two people. Venus sits behind all of them.

The old writers said as much. Ptolemy wrote his Tetrabiblos in the second century. He calls Venus warm and moist, and the planet that softens. Vettius Valens worked in the same years. His Anthologies tie Venus to desire, marriage, gold, jewels and friendship. Money and love sit side by side in his list. They were never two ideas.

In a birth chart, Venus answers a narrow question: what do you move towards? Not what you fear, and not what you fight for. Those belong to Saturn and Mars. Venus is the pull.

LoveAttraction, courtship, what draws you to one person and not another
MoneyWhat you buy, what you judge worth the price, comfort and luxury
ArtDesign, music, decoration, colour, personal style
Social lifeCharm, manners, tact, the wish to keep the peace

Venus, the Planet of Love — and the Lesser Benefic

Older astrology sorted the planets into helpful and harmful. Jupiter was the greater benefic. Venus was the lesser benefic, sometimes called the little fortune. The word benefic just means a planet the old texts counted on to help.

When the two benefics sit side by side in a birth chart, astrologers call it Venus conjunct Jupiter, a pairing found in about one birth in nineteen.

That ranking matters. It says Venus is good, and it says Venus is small. Jupiter widens. Venus sweetens. The English astrologer William Lilly kept the same order in Christian Astrology, his book of 1647. He gives Venus charge of pleasures, music, clothing, jewels and merry company.

Value is also a market question, and financial astrology applies that same logic of worth to prices and cycles.

So calling Venus the planet of love is not wrong. It is a narrowing. The old texts gave Venus a wider brief than romance. Readers who look only at their love life throw away half the meaning.

Venus belongs to the fast-moving group, and the personal planets shape the parts of a chart you notice day to day.

Venus Never Goes More Than 47 Degrees From the Sun

Here is a fact about Venus that changes how you read it. Venus orbits closer to the Sun than we do. From Earth, it can never appear far from the Sun in the sky. Astronomers call that gap the elongation. It is the gap, measured in degrees, between the Sun and the planet as seen from here.

We measured the largest gap Venus reached from 1600 to 2400. It is 47.28 degrees. Slightly more than a sign and a half.

This has a direct result. Your Venus sign is your Sun sign, or a neighbour of it, or the next one along. It can never be anything else. Venus in Capricorn with the Sun in Cancer cannot happen. Nobody has that chart.

The same limit ties Venus to the Moon: a birth with Moon conjunct Venus can only fall within about four and a half days of a new Moon.

People discovering their Venus sign ask the same question every time. How likely was that? We ran the numbers.

Read the bottom row again. It is not rare. It does not happen.

One sign shows what that rule does in practice: for a Libra Sun the five possible Venus signs are counted one by one, and the most common of them is not Libra.

The method: we checked the sky every six hours for 800 years, from 1600 to 2400, with no random draw. For each moment we worked out where the Sun and Venus stood, as seen from Earth, in the tropical zodiac. The tool was the Swiss Ephemeris. Then we compared their signs. A second library, astronomy-engine, checked every seven hours, gave the same shares to within 0.01 points. The same sweep gives the gap, conjunction and retrograde figures on this page.

One in four people has Venus in their Sun sign. Almost six in ten have it one sign away. Fewer than one in five have it two signs away. That last group is the smallest, and it is the widest spread anyone can have.

Why Venus Can Only Make One Aspect to Your Sun

An aspect is an angle between two planets that astrologers treat as a link. The main ones sit at 0, 60, 90, 120 and 180 degrees.

Venus stops at 47.28 degrees. So the square, the trine and the opposition are all out of reach. The sextile at 60 degrees is out of reach too, unless you allow a margin of error near 13 degrees, and no astrologer does. Only the conjunction remains.

Over those 800 years, with a standard margin of 6 degrees, the Sun and Venus form a conjunction 9.2 per cent of the time and nothing else at all. If a reading tells you your Sun squares your Venus, the reading is wrong.

Venus Retrograde: About Seven Charts in a Hundred

Planets sometimes look as though they are moving backwards against the stars. They are not. Earth is passing them, or they are passing Earth. Astrologers call that apparent reversal retrograde.

Mercury retrograde gets the headlines. Venus retrograde is rarer and lasts longer. Over 1600 to 2400, Venus is retrograde 7.21 per cent of the time. Seven people in a hundred are born with it.

The current cycle is easy to date. Venus turns retrograde on 3 October 2026 at 8 degrees and 29 minutes of Scorpio. It turns direct again on 14 November 2026 at 22 degrees and 52 minutes of Libra. That is 41.7 days, and it ends one whole sign behind where it started. The next one begins on 10 May 2028 at 19 degrees and 41 minutes of Gemini.

The 2026 retrograde also carries Venus back and forth over the degree that squares Pluto, which is why Venus square Pluto is exact three times in autumn 2026.

Note the gap between the two. Eighteen months. Venus does this far less than Mercury, which goes retrograde three times a year.

Old practice warns against starting Venus business in those weeks. A new romance, a big purchase, a new look. The reason is plain, not magic: the planet that rules the matter is going the wrong way.

The Pentagram of Venus: a 584-Day Cycle

This is the part of Venus that astronomers and astrologers agree on. It is also the odd part.

Now and then Venus passes straight between Earth and the Sun. Astronomers call that an inferior conjunction. We found every one of them from 2010 to 2033 and measured the gap between them. The average is 584.19 days. That is the synodic cycle of Venus: the time it takes to come back to the same spot against the Sun and Earth.

Now count five of them. Five cycles is 2 920 days. Eight years is 2 922 days. The two numbers are almost the same. That near-match gives the figure below.

Inferior conjunctionPosition
29 October 20105°30′ Scorpio
6 June 201215°45′ Gemini
11 January 201421°12′ Capricorn
15 August 201522°39′ Leo
25 March 20174°57′ Aries
26 October 20183°07′ Scorpio

The sixth line lands back in Scorpio, close to the first. Eight years have passed, and the pattern starts again. Five points, spread almost even around the zodiac, and they repeat every eight years.

Draw lines between those five points and you get a five-pointed star. People call it the pentagram of Venus, or the rose of Venus.

The fit is close but not exact. We measured the drift: each eight-year return falls about 2.4 degrees short of the previous one. So the star slowly rotates backwards through the zodiac. It takes roughly 1 200 years to come full circle. This is a real figure in the sky, not a pretty idea. It is why Venus has been tied to the number five since Babylon.

Where Venus Is Strong, and Where She Struggles

Old astrology grades each planet by sign. The grades are called dignities. Four of them matter.

DignityMeaningVenus is here
DomicileThe planet’s own sign. It acts freely, at home.Taurus and Libra
ExaltationA sign that honours the planet and lifts it.Pisces
DetrimentThe sign across from its own. Exiled, working against the grain.Aries and Scorpio
FallThe sign across from its exaltation. Weak, low-ranked.Virgo

Venus owns two signs, and they are not alike. Venus in Taurus is the earthy version: touch, ownership, comfort, slow pleasure. Venus in Libra is the airy version: conversation, fairness, elegance, the pleasure of company. One collects. The other bargains. The same planet, split in two directions. Our guide to Venus in Taurus and Venus in Libra together works through what happens when both turn up in one couple.

The two hard placements follow from Mars. Aries and Scorpio are Mars signs, and Mars is the planet the tradition set against Venus. Venus in a Mars sign wants what it wants in a blunt way. That is Venus in Aries. Our figures show it is not the most common Venus sign: from 1600 to 2400, Venus sits in Aries 8.29 per cent of the time, close to one chart in twelve.

Exaltation gives the opposite picture. Venus in Pisces is Venus at her most generous and least measured. Lilly ranked exaltation just under domicile, and that order has held for four hundred years.

Venus Has Her Joy in the Fifth House

There is an older layer underneath the dignities, and it points somewhere else.

Hellenistic astrologers held that each planet is more at ease in one particular house. They called it a joy. A planet in its joy behaves better and gives more. Venus has her joy in the fifth house: pleasure, children, art, games, being enjoyed by other people.

The scheme is not random. Chris Brennan, who has done more than anyone to bring the Hellenistic material back into use, treats the joys as the oldest layer of house meaning we still have. Demetra George reads them the same way. The two helpful planets, Venus and Jupiter, take the two good houses, the fifth and the eleventh.

Two other houses belong to Venus by rule. The second house is money and possessions, and it begins in Taurus in the natural order of the zodiac, which Venus rules. The seventh house is partnership, and it begins in Libra, which Venus also rules. Money on one side, marriage on the other. The same split we saw in Valens.

When two charts meet, our hub on Venus sign compatibility gives the odds for all 78 Venus pairs.

How to Read Venus in Your Own Chart

Three things, in order.

Start with the sign. It tells you the style: what you are drawn to, and how you go about it. Because of the 47-degree rule, you already know it sits within two signs of your Sun.

The same rule ties the house of Venus to your birth hour, which is why Venus in the 8th house turns up almost only in births after 10 a.m.

Then the house. The sign says how. The house says where. Venus in the second house puts value into money and things you own. Venus in the seventh puts it into one other person. Same planet, two lives.

Then the aspects, which are the angles Venus makes to other planets. Venus with Saturn is careful about affection. Venus with Mars is quick about it. Note that the Sun is left out of that list, apart from the conjunction.

When Venus and Mars sit together, astrologers call it Venus conjunct Mars, a pairing found in about one birth in fourteen.

Other Venus aspects have pages too: Venus sextile Mars, Venus trine Mars, Venus square Saturn, Mercury conjunct Venus, Sun conjunct Venus and Moon square Venus.

A useful check: look at where the sign Venus rules falls in your chart, not just at Venus itself. If Libra sits on your tenth house, your career carries a Venus flavour even if Venus is nowhere near it.

What Venus Does Not Tell You

Venus does not name a person. It does not fix an outcome. It shows a taste, and tastes change with use.

Liz Greene, whose work brought psychology into modern astrology, reads Venus as the part of us that gives things worth. She does not read it as a forecast of who arrives. Robert Hand, one of the most careful modern writers on method, is blunt about the gap between a symbol and a forecast. A symbol shows a shape. A forecast claims an event. Venus is a shape.

The short version: Venus tells you what you value, and leaves you to decide whether you still want to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Venus represent in astrology?

Venus represents value in all its forms: love, money, beauty, taste and fair exchange. In a birth chart it shows what you move towards and what you consider worth having. The old texts called it the lesser benefic, a helpful planet of modest reach.

Can my Venus sign be far from my Sun sign?

No. Venus never appears more than 47.28 degrees from the Sun. Your Venus sign is your Sun sign, or within two signs of it. Over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400, Venus is in the Sun sign 23.6 per cent of the time, one sign away 58.4 per cent and two signs away 18.0 per cent. Nothing wider can happen.

How rare is Venus retrograde in a birth chart?

It appears in 7.21 per cent of charts, so about seven people in a hundred. Venus goes retrograde for roughly six weeks every eighteen months. The next period runs from 3 October 2026 to 14 November 2026, lasting 41.7 days.

Why is Venus called the planet of love?

The name comes from the Roman goddess of love, and the link is older still. The planet is the brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon, which made it an easy symbol for beauty. The tradition gave it money and art as well, so love is one part of the brief, not the whole of it.

Which signs does Venus rule?

Taurus and Libra. Venus is exalted in Pisces, in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, and in fall in Virgo. Detriment means the sign across from its own. Fall means the sign across from its exaltation.

What is the pentagram of Venus?

Venus lines up between Earth and the Sun every 584.19 days on average. Five of those alignments take almost exactly eight years, and they fall at five points spread around the zodiac. Join those points and you draw a five-pointed star. Each eight-year return drifts back by about 2.4 degrees, so the star turns slowly.
