Taurus Venus and Sagittarius Venus Compatibility: A Quincunx That Echoes in the Sun Signs

Taurus Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility starts with an odd angle. The two signs sit five signs apart, a link called a quincunx. The old books give that gap no bond at all. Then the birth charts behind this couple repeat the pattern. The two Sun signs land five signs apart more than any other way, in 37 percent of these couples. We measured every hour from 1600 to 2400 to find that out.

This guide shows how common each Venus is, which Sun signs come with it, and how the tradition ranks Venus in each sign. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.

The pair in plain words

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you, what you value and how you show care. It is not the Sun sign you read in a horoscope. This page is about two people, one with Venus in Taurus and one with Venus in Sagittarius.

Taurus is the second sign and Sagittarius the ninth. Count the short way round and you get five signs, or 150 degrees. That angle is the quincunx, also called the inconjunct. Modern astrologers read it as a link that needs constant small fixes. Taurus is an earth sign, the element of the body, money and things you can touch. Sagittarius is a fire sign, the element of drive, faith and far goals.

The modes differ too. Taurus is fixed, which means it sits in the middle of a season, here spring. It holds on. Sagittarius is mutable, which means it closes a season, here autumn. It lets go and moves on. Among all 78 Venus pairs, no other one is a quincunx between a fixed earth sign and a mutable fire sign.

What the evidence says first

A fair warning comes before any chart talk. The largest test of zodiac love signs came from the sociologist David Voas. His 2007 paper, Ten Million Marriages, used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He compared the birth dates of more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from errors in the data.

Voas tested Sun signs only. No one has run a test like that for Venus signs, as far as we know. So what follows gives two people words for how they love. It cannot tell them whether they will last.

How common each Venus is

Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. That loop makes Venus stay longer in some signs than in others.

Venus repeats its path in an eight-year cycle, so a short window can skew the count. To smooth out those loops, we used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of all time, 1600 to 2400 Rank out of twelve.
Venus in Taurus 8.59 percent Second of the twelve.
Venus in Sagittarius 8.23 percent Ninth of the twelve.
Most common: Venus in Cancer 8.62 percent First of the twelve.
Least common: Venus in Capricorn 8.04 percent Last of the twelve.

The spread is small. Neither Venus here is rare, and both sit close to one in twelve. A short window can mislead. Our guide to Venus in Sagittarius shows that it came last of the twelve for births from 1950 to 2010. Over 800 years, it sits near the middle.

Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Taurus and the other Venus in Sagittarius? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.41 percent, or one couple in 71. That ranks 18th of the 78 pairs.

Five Sun signs each, and none in common

Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.

Venus sign Sun signs it allows, with their share.
Venus in Taurus Gemini 29.9, Aries 28.7, Taurus 24.0, Cancer 8.7 and Pisces 8.7 percent.
Venus in Sagittarius Scorpio 29.2, Capricorn 28.6, Sagittarius 23.5, Libra 9.5 and Aquarius 9.3 percent.

Read the two lists side by side. They do not touch. The Taurus Venus list runs from Pisces to Cancer, around spring. The Sagittarius Venus list runs from Libra to Aquarius, around autumn and winter. So the two partners in this couple never share a Sun sign. Not one couple in eight centuries of births can have it.

That rules out the Sun sign as common ground. It also rules out most of the close angles. Only 0.8 percent of these couples have Suns in next-door signs.

The quincunx comes back in the Sun signs

We sorted every couple by the angle between their two Suns. Each partner’s Sun was drawn from the shares in the table above.

Angle between the two Suns Share of these couples.
Quincunx, five signs apart 37.3 percent of couples.
Trine, four signs apart 24.3 percent of couples.
Opposition, six signs apart 19.3 percent of couples.
Square, three signs apart 13.3 percent of couples.
Sextile, two signs apart 5.1 percent of couples.
Next-door signs 0.8 percent of couples.
Same Sun sign None at all.

The quincunx leads by a wide margin. More than one couple in three has the same five-sign gap twice, once by Venus and once by Sun. That is the thesis of this page. The awkward angle is not a quirk of one planet. It shows up again in the part of the chart most people know.

Why does it happen? Venus stays near the Sun. So when two Venuses sit five signs apart, their Suns land near that same gap. The pull is loose, which is why trines and oppositions come next.

The likeliest Sun pair is a Gemini Sun with a Scorpio Sun, at 8.7 percent of these couples. Gemini and Scorpio are five signs apart, a quincunx again. Next come Gemini with Capricorn, at 8.6 percent, and Aries with Scorpio, at 8.4 percent. No single Sun pair reaches one couple in ten, so treat these as a lean, not a rule.

A Taurus and Sagittarius by Sun sign is not this couple

Many readers land here because they are a Taurus and a Sagittarius by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.

A Taurus Sun has Venus in Taurus 24.4 percent of the time. The rest have Venus in Aries, Gemini, Pisces or Cancer. A Sagittarius Sun has Venus in Sagittarius 23.9 percent of the time. Both must hold at once, which happens in about 5.8 percent of Taurus and Sagittarius Sun couples, or one in 17. The Sun pair is a separate reading, and our page on Taurus and Sagittarius by Sun sign covers it.

Seen from the Venus side, 41.9 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. In the other 58.1 percent, neither partner does. Venus in Taurus: the planet at home

The old books rank each planet by the sign it stands in. The rank is called dignity. In the Tetrabiblos, written around 150 AD, Ptolemy gives Venus two homes: Taurus and Libra. A planet in its home, or domicile, works at full strength. It has its own tools at hand.

Venus holds lesser ranks in Taurus too. She rules the earth signs by day, a rank called triplicity. She also owns the first eight degrees of the sign, a small rank called the terms. Our guide to Venus in Taurus covers these ranks in full.

Modern writers such as Liz Greene read this Venus as love through the senses. It likes touch, good food, loyalty and time. It builds slowly and keeps what it builds.

Venus in Sagittarius: a guest of Jupiter

Sagittarius belongs to Jupiter. Venus does not rule it, is not exalted there and does not fall there. So she holds no major rank in this sign. She does own a small slice of it, from 12 to 17 degrees, by the terms. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), calls a planet with no major rank peregrine. The word comes from the Latin for a traveler. It means a guest who takes the tone of the host.

The host here is Jupiter, the planet of growth, faith and long roads. So this Venus loves through ideas, travel and shared plans. Stephen Arroyo and other modern writers read it as a need for room and plain honesty in love.

So the pair joins one Venus at full strength with one Venus on the road. One partner holds the keys to the house. The other is always half packed.

What Ptolemy says about signs five apart

In Book I, chapters 13 to 16, Ptolemy lists the ways two signs can relate. He names four aspects: the sextile, the square, the trine and the opposition. A quincunx is not on his list. He then adds signs that command and obey, and signs that behold each other. Taurus and Sagittarius fit neither group.

In chapter 16, he names what is left. Signs with none of these ties he calls disjunct, or alien. Later writers call this aversion, as if the two signs have turned their backs. Taurus and Sagittarius get no tie at all by his scheme, whether the ties are read by whole sign or by degree.

The quincunx as a named aspect belongs to later astrology, not to Ptolemy. So the old books and the new ones read this pair in different ways. The old ones see no bond. The new ones see a bond that needs work.

Is the quincunx exact in degrees?

Two Venuses five signs apart can be anywhere from 120 to 180 degrees apart. The quincunx is exact at 150 degrees. The allowed gap around it is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign, over eight centuries.

Orb allowed Couples with an exact quincunx.
Within 3 degrees 19.0 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36.1 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46.4 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 55.8 percent of couples.

These values are close to the same for every Venus pair, so they are not special to this one. The twist is at the edges. With an 8 degree orb, 7.0 percent of these couples form a trine or an opposition in degrees instead. Say Venus sits at 29 degrees of Taurus and at 1 degree of Sagittarius. The gap is 122 degrees. By sign it is a quincunx. In the sky it is a trine.

Reading the pair the old way

Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads this match.

  • Roots and roads. Taurus wants a home base. Sagittarius wants the next trip. Both are real needs.
  • Pace. Taurus decides slowly and sticks. Sagittarius decides fast and revises.
  • Money. Taurus saves for comfort. Sagittarius spends on the new. A shared plan helps both.
  • Honesty. Both value plain words. Taurus wants them kept. Sagittarius wants them said.
  • Small fixes. The quincunx asks for steady tweaks, not one big deal. That suits a couple who check in each week.

Take this reading as an invitation to talk about pace and space. It is not a verdict on the couple.

How we measured it

We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.

Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs and Sun angles combine each partner’s Sun-sign shares from the first table. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 17.

Other Venus pairs to compare

For the Taurus pair that shares an element, see Taurus Venus and Capricorn Venus. For a Sagittarius pair where the Suns meet in one sign only, see Aries Venus and Sagittarius Venus. The same two signs read through the Moon appear in Taurus Moon and Sagittarius Moon. Every pair is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility.

Questions about Taurus and Sagittarius Venus

Are Venus in Taurus and Venus in Sagittarius compatible?

By sign, they form a quincunx, an angle that modern astrologers read as a link that needs steady small fixes. Ptolemy gave these two signs no tie at all. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

Can a Venus in Taurus and a Venus in Sagittarius share a Sun sign?

No. Venus in Taurus comes with a Sun in Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. Venus in Sagittarius comes with a Sun in Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius. The two lists never overlap.

What Sun signs do these couples have most?

The likeliest pair is a Gemini Sun with a Scorpio Sun, at 8.7 percent of these couples. Across all Sun pairs, 37.3 percent of couples have their Suns five signs apart, the same quincunx as their Venuses.

Is Venus strong in Taurus or in Sagittarius?

Venus is at home in Taurus, her strongest seat. In Sagittarius she holds no major rank, which Lilly calls peregrine, a guest of Jupiter.

How common is a Taurus Venus and Sagittarius Venus couple?

Over 1600 to 2400, about 1.41 percent of random couples, or one in 71. It ranks 18th of the 78 Venus pairs.
