Leo Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility joins two fire signs four apart, the easy angle called a trine. Neither sign gives Venus a special rank. Both are houses of the rulers of fire: Leo of the Sun, Sagittarius of Jupiter. Here is the twist. Fire by Venus rarely means fire by Sun, and only one couple in 120 shares a Sun sign.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote about both signs. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
Two guests in the houses of fire
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The fall and the detriment are its two weak places.
| Partner | Rank of Venus | Ruler of the sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo Venus | No major rank. | The Sun. |
| Sagittarius Venus | No major rank. | Jupiter. |
So both partners hold Venus as a guest. Neither Venus is honored, and neither is weak. The hosts matter more here. In chapter 18 of Book I of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy gives the fire triangle, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, to two rulers. “The sun assumes first governance of it by day and Jupiter by night.” Leo is the Sun’s house. Sagittarius is Jupiter’s. Our page on Leo and Sagittarius compatibility by Sun sign builds its case on that link. Venus has no share in the rule of fire.
A Leo Venus loves out loud, with warmth, loyalty and a taste for the grand gesture. Our page on Venus in Leo covers that placement in full. A Sagittarius Venus loves through freedom, candor and shared adventure. Our page on Venus in Sagittarius covers that one.
The trine Ptolemy used to house Jupiter
In chapter 17, Ptolemy hands out the homes. Leo goes to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon. The other planets take the signs on either side, in order. Jupiter gets Sagittarius and Pisces, which stand “in triangular aspect to the luminaries, which is a harmonious and beneficent configuration.” Triangular aspect is his term for the trine.
So Sagittarius is the trine from Leo, just as Pisces is the trine from Cancer. The angle in this couple is the very one that made Sagittarius a house of Jupiter. Chapter 13 adds why a trine is easy. It joins signs of one kind. Leo and Sagittarius are both masculine, the old term for fire and air signs.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Leo | 8.46 percent | Fourth of twelve. |
| Venus in Sagittarius | 8.23 percent | Ninth of twelve. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Leo and the other Venus in Sagittarius? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.39 percent, or about one couple in 72. That ranks 33rd of the 78 Venus pairs, and sixth of the twelve trine pairs.
Leo commands Sagittarius, but only by whole signs
Chapter 14 names signs that “command” and “obey.” Ptolemy defines them as parts of the zodiac “disposed at an equal distance from the same equinoctial sign.” The equinox signs are Aries and Libra. Such parts rise over the horizon in equal time. The part on the summer side, where days are longer, commands. His text can be read two ways.
The first reading uses whole signs. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs in his note 80: “Taurus-Pisces, Gemini-Aquarius, Cancer-Capricorn, Leo-Sagittarius, Virgo-Scorpio.” The commanding sign comes first. Leo sits four signs after Aries, and Sagittarius four signs before it. So by whole signs, the Leo Venus commands and the Sagittarius Venus obeys.
The second reading uses exact degrees. Each degree is mirrored across the equinox axis, from 0 degrees Aries to 0 degrees Libra. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), called such mirror points contra-antiscia. On this reading, a degree of Leo mirrors a degree of Scorpio, not Sagittarius. We counted Leo and Sagittarius Venuses on mirror points. Even with a 3-degree margin, it was 0.50 percent of couples. That is only the edge where late Scorpio meets early Sagittarius.
| Reading of chapter 14 | Tie between Leo and Sagittarius | Source. |
|---|---|---|
| Whole signs | Leo commands, Sagittarius obeys. | Robbins, note 80. |
| Exact degrees | Almost none, 0.50 percent at 3 degrees. | Mirror points, as in Lilly. |
So this pair is the reverse of Leo and Scorpio. There, the tie holds by degree and fails by sign. Here, it holds by sign and fails by degree. Chapter 15 names a second tie, signs that “behold” each other across a solstice sign. By whole signs, Robbins’s note 83 pairs Leo with Gemini and Sagittarius with Aquarius. By degrees, Leo mirrors Taurus and Sagittarius mirrors Capricorn. Neither reading links Leo and Sagittarius that way.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.
| Sun sign | Share of Leo Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 8.37 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Cancer | 29.84 percent | The largest group. |
| Leo | 23.88 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Virgo | 29.16 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Libra | 8.76 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
| Sun sign | Share of Sagittarius Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra | 9.48 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Scorpio | 29.18 percent | The largest group. |
| Sagittarius | 23.50 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Capricorn | 28.58 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Aquarius | 9.27 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
One shared Sun, and it is Libra
Only one Sun sign shows up in both lists: Libra. A Libra Sun can carry Venus two signs behind, in Leo, or two signs ahead, in Sagittarius. Both are near the edge of her range. So these partners share a Sun sign only when both are Libra Suns. Multiply the two Libra shares and you get 0.83 percent, about one couple in 120.
Fire by Venus rarely means fire by Sun. Only one person in four with either Venus has a fire Sun. Both partners have fire Suns, a Leo and a Sagittarius, in 5.61 percent of couples. In 58 percent, neither partner has a fire Sun.
The likeliest Suns are water and earth
Now combine two partners. We multiplied the Sun sign shares for each and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Cancer with a Scorpio counts once, whoever holds which Venus.
| Sun pair | Share of these couples | Elements of the Suns. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer and Scorpio | 8.71 percent | Water and water. |
| Cancer and Capricorn | 8.53 percent | Water and earth. |
| Virgo and Scorpio | 8.51 percent | Earth and water. |
| Virgo and Capricorn | 8.33 percent | Earth and earth. |
| Cancer and Sagittarius | 7.01 percent | Water and fire. |
The top four Sun pairs hold no fire at all. The likeliest couple is a Cancer Sun with the Leo Venus and a Scorpio Sun with the Sagittarius Venus. It covers fewer than one couple in eleven. So treat any “typical” couple as a lean, not a rule.
How do the two Suns line up? We grouped the Sun pairs by the angle between them.
| Angle between the two Suns | Share of couples | What it means. |
|---|---|---|
| Trine | 25.0 percent | Four signs apart, like the Venuses. |
| Quincunx | 24.1 percent | Five signs apart, with no classical aspect. |
| Square | 19.2 percent | A tense right angle. |
| Sextile | 12.8 percent | Two signs apart. |
| Opposition | 12.7 percent | Suns face to face. |
| Semi-sextile | 5.3 percent | Next-door signs. |
| Same sign | 0.8 percent | Both Libra. |
Only one couple in four repeats the trine in the Suns. Almost as many have Suns five signs apart, an angle Ptolemy did not count as an aspect. Read both layers.
Leo and Sagittarius by Sun sign: not the same couple
Many readers land here because they are a Leo Sun and a Sagittarius Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? In most cases, no. A Leo Sun has Venus in Leo about one time in four. A Sagittarius Sun has Venus in Sagittarius about one time in four as well. So only about one Leo and Sagittarius Sun couple in 18 holds this exact Venus pair.
Turn it around. In 41.76 percent of Leo Venus and Sagittarius Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 29th of the 78 pairs. In 5.61 percent of couples, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can settle it.
The trine in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses four signs apart can sit anywhere from 91 to 149 degrees apart. The exact trine is 120 degrees. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.
| Orb | Couples with a true trine | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 19.01 percent | About one in five. |
| 6 degrees | 36.03 percent | About one in three. |
| 8 degrees | 46.26 percent | Just under half. |
| 10 degrees | 55.61 percent | Just over half. |
These values are near the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. With an 8-degree orb, 3.46 percent of these couples form a square in degrees instead. Picture Venus at 29 degrees Leo and 0 degrees Sagittarius. The gap is 91 degrees. By sign, that is a trine. In the sky, it is a square.
How the tradition reads this couple
Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads this pair.
- Common ground. Both love with heat and open hands. Fun, praise and plans come easily.
- Stage and road. The Leo Venus wants a loyal audience. The Sagittarius Venus wants room to roam.
- Pace. Leo is fixed, a sign in the middle of a season, and stays put. Sagittarius is mutable, a sign that closes a season, and moves on.
- The soft spot. Sagittarius speaks blunt truths. Leo hears them as a lack of respect.
One simple habit helps. Plan one shared outing each month, chosen in turn. On the Leo turn, the outing includes a moment to shine. On the Sagittarius turn, it goes somewhere new. Each partner then says one thing they liked about the other’s pick.
The same signs, through other planets and pairs
The Moon shows emotional needs, a separate layer from Venus. Our page on Leo Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility reads the two signs through that layer. The fire trine from Leo to Aries is traced in Aries Venus and Leo Venus compatibility. The third fire pair is Aries Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatibility. For all 78 pairs at a glance, see our guide to Venus sign compatibility.
What the data says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test on that scale exists for Venus signs.
So a trine is not a promise, and a shared element is not a shared Sun. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each entry of Venus and the Sun into a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the times. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It logged the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid shifted half an hour from the first. That makes more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree to within 0.01 of a point.
The pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The degree and mirror figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 18.
Frequently asked questions
Are Leo Venus and Sagittarius Venus compatible?
They form a fire trine, which Ptolemy called harmonious. Venus has no major rank in either sign. With an 8-degree orb, 46.26 percent of these couples have a true trine. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
How common is a Leo Venus and Sagittarius Venus couple?
About one couple in 72, or 1.39 percent, over the years 1600 to 2400. That ranks 33rd of the 78 Venus pairs and sixth of the twelve trine pairs.
Can a Leo Venus and a Sagittarius Venus share a Sun sign?
Only if both partners are Libra Suns. That happens in about one couple in 120. The likeliest Suns are a Cancer and a Scorpio, with no fire Sun at all.
Does Leo command Sagittarius in Ptolemy?
By whole signs, yes. Robbins lists Leo and Sagittarius in his note 80, with Leo commanding. By exact degrees, no: Leo mirrors Scorpio across the equinox axis, and only 0.50 percent of these couples sit near a mirror point.
Who rules the fire signs in Ptolemy?
The Sun by day and Jupiter by night, in chapter 18. The Sun rules Leo and Jupiter rules Sagittarius, so both Venuses are guests of the two fire rulers. Venus has no share in that rule.
