Venus in Leo is never alone. The Sun is always close by, and that changes everything about how this placement works.
For a fire-sign Venus with the opposite problem — no rank at all instead of a proud one — see how Venus in Sagittarius borrows its confidence from Jupiter.
Here is the reason. Venus orbits closer to the Sun than Earth does. From where we stand, Venus can never wander far from the Sun in the sky. The limit is about 47 degrees of arc — roughly a sixth of the full circle of the zodiac. Astrologers call that gap the elongation: the angle between Venus and the Sun as we see them.
So when Venus sits in Leo, the Sun has to sit nearby too. It cannot be anywhere it likes. This is not a claim about your love life. It is geometry, and it can be measured.
We measured it. This article gives you the numbers, then explains what they mean for you.
How we got the numbers
We checked the sky every six hours from 1600 to 2400. That is 1,168,776 moments. For each one we worked out where Venus and the Sun stood, using the astronomy-engine library — the same class of maths that guides spacecraft. Then we ran the whole count again with a second tool, the Swiss Ephemeris, on a different grid. The two agree to within 0.02 points. We used the tropical zodiac, the standard system in Western astrology, where the signs are tied to the seasons rather than to the star patterns.
Then we counted. No opinions, no guesswork. You can run the same test and get the same result.
Venus sits in Leo 8.46 percent of the time
From 1600 to 2400, Venus spends 8.46 percent of the time in Leo. That is about 8.5 in every 100 people. It ranks fourth of the twelve signs, a hair behind Gemini.
Why not one in twelve, or 8.33 percent? Because Venus does not move at a steady pace. It speeds up and slows down along its path. It lingers in some signs and rushes through others. Over those 800 years, Cancer leads the table at 8.62 percent. Capricorn trails at 8.04 percent. A short span can tilt the count, because Venus runs in an eight-year loop. For people born from 1950 to 2010, Venus in Leo comes to 8.38 percent.
Leo sits in the upper half. Your placement is neither rare nor crowded. About one friend in twelve shares it.
Your Sun can only be in five signs
This is where the geometry bites. If Venus is in Leo, your Sun sign is not open to chance. It has to be within that 47-degree leash.
The neighbouring sign runs on the same leash: only five Sun signs can carry Venus in Cancer, and Leo is one of them.
Across all the time Venus spent in Leo from 1600 to 2400, the Sun sat in these signs:
- Cancer — 29.84 percent
- Virgo — 29.16 percent
- Leo — 23.87 percent
- Libra — 8.76 percent
- Gemini — 8.37 percent
Five signs. That is the whole list. Seven of the twelve signs are ruled out flat. If your Venus is in Leo and someone tells you their Sun is in Pisces, one of you has the wrong chart.
The leash has a sharp effect on couples. Pair a Leo Venus with a Capricorn Venus and the two lists of Sun signs never meet, as our look at Venus in Leo and Venus in Capricorn shows.
With an Aries Venus, the two lists touch at one sign only, Gemini, as our page on Venus in Aries and Venus in Leo compatibility shows.
With a Pisces Venus, the lists never meet at all, and Ptolemy gives the two signs no tie, as Leo Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility explains.
With a Taurus Venus, the lists meet on Gemini and Cancer, as Taurus Venus and Leo Venus compatibility shows for a square between signs that behold each other by exact degree, though not by whole sign.
With a Libra Venus, the lists meet on Leo, Virgo and Libra, as Leo Venus and Libra Venus compatibility shows.
With a Gemini Venus, the likeliest Sun on both sides is Cancer, as Gemini Venus and Leo Venus compatibility shows.
One sign past Leo, Venus drops into her fall, as Leo Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility explains.
With a Cancer Venus, the partners share a Sun sign in about one couple in five, as Cancer Venus and Leo Venus compatibility shows.
With an Aquarius Venus, straight across the zodiac, the lists never meet either, as Leo Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility shows.
Two Leo Venuses are another case, since Leo Venus and Leo Venus compatibility shows that most such couples have no Leo Sun at all.
The mean gap between Venus and the Sun, with Venus in Leo, is 27.98 degrees. The widest gap we found was 46.30 degrees, close to the hard ceiling.
Note the split. Fewer than one Venus-in-Leo person in four is also a Leo Sun. The bigger groups are Cancer and Virgo. That matters, and most articles skip it.
What the Sun sign does to your Leo Venus
Venus shows what you find lovely and how you court. The Sun shows your core drive. When the two sit in different signs, the styles pull apart.
A Virgo Sun with a Leo Venus is a close second. Here a careful, useful, detail-loving core carries a warm and showy heart. These people plan the grand gesture down to the last stitch. They rehearse the toast. Their love is theatrical, but the stage crew is very good.
A Cancer Sun with a Leo Venus is the largest group of all, just ahead of Virgo. A private, home-centred core carries a heart that wants applause. They guard their inner life closely, then throw a party for the person they love. The mix reads as shy warmth that suddenly blazes.
Only the Leo Sun group gets the pure version, and it is not the majority. That is the honest picture.
Venus in Leo is peregrine
Classical astrology sorts each planet by sign. A planet is at home in some signs, weak in others. Venus rules Taurus and Libra. It is weak in Aries and Scorpio, and lifted in Pisces.
In Leo, Venus gets none of these labels. Astrologers call that state peregrine: a planet in a sign where it holds no rank of its own, like a guest in someone else’s house.
The English astrologer William Lilly set this out plainly in Christian Astrology, printed in 1647. A peregrine planet, he wrote, is a wanderer with no estate to draw on. It has to borrow.
Borrow from whom? From the ruler of the sign. Leo belongs to the Sun. So a Leo Venus takes its cue from the Sun in your chart — its sign, its house, its condition. This is not decoration. It is the practical rule, and it explains why two Leo Venus people can feel so different.
If you want the ground floor first, our guide to the Leo sign and its traits covers what Leo itself asks for.
About one Leo Venus in eight is burned by the Sun
Here is the number nobody publishes.
Classical astrologers watched how close a planet sat to the Sun. Too close, and they called it combust — burned. Lilly put the boundary at 8.5 degrees. Inside that ring, he held, the planet loses its own voice. The Sun drowns it out, the way a lamp vanishes at noon.
We measured how much of the time Venus spends in Leo falls inside that ring, from 1600 to 2400.
13.30 percent. That is about one Leo Venus in eight. Those people are combust.
Think about what that means. Your Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, and about one time in eight it also sits in the Sun’s glare. Peregrine and burned at once. The tradition would call that a hard spot for Venus.
What does it feel like? The classical reading is a private one. Combust Venus keeps its wants hidden inside the person’s sense of self. Wanting and being get tangled. People with this placement describe loving hard and showing little, or pouring their whole identity into one person. Robert Hand, in Planets in Transit, treats such Sun-Venus contacts as moments when charm and ego stop being separate things.
Test it yourself. Find your Venus degree and your Sun degree. Subtract. If the gap is under 8.5 degrees, you are in this group.
Cazimi: about one Leo Venus in 240
There is a rarer case still. When a planet sits within 17 minutes of arc of the exact centre of the Sun — that is 17 sixtieths of one degree, a hair’s width — the tradition flips the verdict. Instead of burned, the planet is cazimi: in the heart of the Sun. Arabic and medieval astrologers treated it as the strongest position a planet can hold.
From 1600 to 2400, Venus in Leo is cazimi 0.42 percent of the time. That is about one Leo Venus in 240.
The image is old and it is worth keeping. A burned planet stands too near the throne and gets scorched. A cazimi planet is seated on the throne, in the king’s own lap. Same closeness, opposite reading. The line between them is under nine degrees wide.
Venus turns backward in Leo once every eight years
From Earth, Venus sometimes appears to slide backward against the stars. It is not really reversing. Our two orbits pass each other, and the view shifts, the way a slower car seems to drift back when you overtake it. Astrologers call this retrograde.
From 1600 to 2400, Venus is retrograde for 7.40 percent of its time in Leo.
The pattern is strict. Venus retrogrades in Leo in 2015, 2023, 2031 and 2039 — one visit every eight years, in the second half of July. Venus and Earth lock into an eight-year rhythm, so the events repeat almost on the same date. If you were born in one of those windows, your Venus is both peregrine and retrograde. Our guide to retrograde planets in the natal chart explains how to read that.
When Venus visits Leo next
Venus crosses Leo for about 25 days at a stretch. Here are the exact windows we calculated, in universal time:
- 13 June 2026 to 9 July 2026 — 26.3 days
- 27 July 2027 to 20 August 2027 — 24.3 days
- 5 September 2028 to 2 October 2028 — 26.5 days
- 26 June 2029 to 21 July 2029 — 24.9 days
These are transits, not birth placements. A transit is where a planet sits today, as opposed to where it stood at your birth. During a Venus-in-Leo window, everyone feels a nudge toward warmth, display and generosity — not just Leo Venus people.
Notice how the dates drift. Venus does not return to Leo on a yearly clock. It skips whole years. That drift comes from the same eight-year cycle that governs the retrograde.
How a Leo Venus actually loves
Now the numbers can carry some meaning.
Venus in Leo courts out loud. It gives compliments in public. It plans the date instead of asking what you feel like. It buys the ridiculous gift. Praise is not vanity here — it is the currency. Withhold it and the warmth cools fast.
The gift of this placement is generosity that costs the giver something. Leo Venus people give time, attention and pride. They defend their partner in front of others. They remember what you said you wanted in March.
The cost is the need for a witness. Love that goes unseen barely counts. That is the peregrine problem in daily form: the placement has no ground of its own, so it looks to the Sun — to being recognised — for proof that it exists.
Demetra George, who has spent decades restoring ancient astrology for modern readers, makes the point that a planet’s dignity describes its working conditions, not its worth. A peregrine Venus is not a broken Venus. It is a Venus that has to build its own footing.
The practical move is simple. Praise your partner first, without waiting your turn. It breaks the loop.
Venus in Leo at work and with money
Venus governs taste and value, so it shows in what you buy and what you make.
Leo Venus spends on things that can be seen. Clothes, hosting, gifts, a good table. Small quiet luxuries hold less appeal than one bold piece. Budgets fail here when generosity outruns income.
At work, this Venus shines in any role with an audience: teaching, selling, design, performance, leading a team. It struggles in roles where credit is shared and nobody is named.
The Virgo Sun group — close to 30 percent of Leo Venus people — has an advantage here. The Virgo drive for craft gives the Leo heart something solid to show off. That pairing produces careful work with a bold finish.
Where the tradition disagrees with itself
Two schools read this placement differently, and it helps to know which one you are hearing.
Ptolemy, writing in Alexandria in the second century, treated planets as causes of physical effects. His Tetrabiblos reads Venus by dignity, aspect and sect, with little interest in feelings. Vettius Valens, working around the same era, built his Anthologies from case charts and outcomes, and he is blunt about combustion weakening a planet’s business.
Liz Greene, the modern astrologer who brought depth psychology into the field, reads the same placement inward. For her a burned Venus is not a broken love life. It is a love life fused with identity, where the person cannot tell wanting from being.
Chris Brennan, who has done the most to bring Hellenistic technique back into circulation, argues both readings come from the same source and got split by history, not by evidence.
You are allowed to use both. The classical rule tells you the mechanics. The psychological reading tells you what it feels like from inside.
How to check your own chart
Four steps, and you will know more than most readings give you.
- Find your Venus sign and its exact degree.
- Find your Sun sign and its exact degree.
- Subtract the two positions. Under 8.5 degrees means combust. Under 17 minutes of arc means cazimi.
- Check whether your Venus is marked with an R for retrograde.
The Sun sign is the key you keep coming back to, because a peregrine Venus borrows from it. Our guide to the Sun in Leo is the place to start if that is your pairing.
Common questions
Is Venus in Leo a good placement?
It is a neutral one by rank. Venus in Leo is peregrine, which means it holds no dignity and no weakness in that sign. Its strength comes from the Sun’s condition in your chart, not from Leo itself.
What Sun signs go with Venus in Leo?
Only five: Virgo, Cancer, Leo, Libra and Gemini. Venus never sits more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so the other seven signs are impossible. From 1600 to 2400, Cancer leads at 29.84 percent, just ahead of Virgo at 29.16 percent.
How rare is Venus in Leo?
Venus spends 8.46 percent of the time in Leo, measured from 1600 to 2400. That ranks fourth of the twelve signs, close to the even share of 8.33 percent. Cancer is the most common Venus sign, at 8.62 percent.
What does combust Venus in Leo mean?
Combust means Venus sits within 8.5 degrees of the Sun, a boundary William Lilly set in 1647. The tradition holds that the Sun overwhelms the planet’s own voice. From 1600 to 2400, Venus in Leo is combust 13.30 percent of the time, about one in eight.
When is Venus in Leo in 2026?
From 13 June 2026 to 9 July 2026, a stretch of 26.3 days.
Who is Venus in Leo compatible with?
Fire and air Venus signs match its pace best: Aries, Sagittarius, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. What matters more is whether the other person gives praise freely. A Leo Venus starved of recognition cools, whatever the sign.
The one thing to keep
Venus in Leo is a guest in the Sun’s house, standing close enough to feel the heat. About one in eight stands inside the flame. Read your Sun first, and the rest of this placement opens up.
