Leo Venus and Aquarius Venus Compatibility: The Sun’s House Facing Saturn’s

Leo Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility pairs two people whose Venus signs sit straight across the zodiac. Leo is the home of the Sun. Aquarius is a home of Saturn. In the oldest rulebook of astrology, those two homes face each other on purpose, as heat faces cold.

We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs that sit behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote about both signs. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

The Sun’s house facing Saturn’s

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Each sign also has a ruler, the planet that “owns” it. Astrologers call that sign the planet’s house.

Ptolemy set out the houses in Book I, chapter 17, of the Tetrabiblos, written in the second century. He gave Leo to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon, because those signs bring the most heat. Then he gave Saturn the two signs across from them, Capricorn and Aquarius. His reason is plain. Saturn is the planet “in whose nature cold prevails, as opposed to heat.” He adds that the signs are “cold and wintry,” and that their “diametral aspect is not consistent with beneficence.” Diametral means straight across the circle.

So this pair repeats, in the Venus signs, the oldest standoff in the chart. One Venus stays in the house of the Sun. The other stays in a house of Saturn.

Partner Rank of Venus Host of the sign.
Leo Venus No rank, or peregrine. The Sun, who rules Leo.
Aquarius Venus No rank, or peregrine. Saturn, the old ruler of Aquarius.

The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A house is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. Detriment and fall are its two weak places. Venus has none of these four ranks in Leo or in Aquarius. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), called a planet with no rank “peregrine,” which means a traveler. So both Venuses are guests, and both hosts are strong. The Leo Venus lodges with the Sun. The Aquarius Venus lodges with Saturn. Modern authors add Uranus as a second ruler of Aquarius; this page keeps to Ptolemy’s scheme.

A Leo Venus loves with warmth, loyalty and a wish to be seen. Our page on Venus in Leo explains why the Sun is never far from that Venus. An Aquarius Venus loves through friendship, ideas and room to breathe. Our page on Venus in Aquarius shows how the old and new rulers each read that sign.

How common this pair is

Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of time, 1600 to 2400 Rank among twelve.
Venus in Leo 8.46 percent Fourth of twelve.
Venus in Aquarius 8.16 percent Tenth of twelve.
Even split 8.33 percent One sign in twelve.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Leo and the other Venus in Aquarius? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.38 percent, or about one couple in 72. That ranks 40th of the 78 Venus pairs.

Six Venus pairs sit in opposite signs. They are close in size, as the table shows.

Opposite Venus signs How common Note.
Virgo and Pisces 1 couple in 71.5 The most common of the six.
Taurus and Scorpio 1 couple in 71.8 The other fixed pair.
Gemini and Sagittarius 1 couple in 71.8 Tied with Taurus and Scorpio.
Cancer and Capricorn 1 couple in 72.1 The Moon’s house faces Saturn’s.
Aries and Libra 1 couple in 72.5 Tied for last.
Leo and Aquarius 1 couple in 72.5 Tied for last.

So Leo and Aquarius share last place with Aries and Libra. The gap is tiny, and we would not build a claim on it.

An opposition by sign, and how close it gets

An aspect is an angle between two points in a chart. Leo and Aquarius sit six signs apart, so by sign they form an opposition, an angle of 180 degrees. Ptolemy counts the opposition as one of his four aspects, next to the trine, the square and the sextile. He calls it “disharmonious,” since it joins signs of opposite kinds.

But a sign spans 30 degrees. A Venus at 1 degree Leo and a Venus at 29 degrees Aquarius are in opposite signs, yet only 152 degrees apart. Most astrologers only count an aspect when the angle falls within a margin, called an orb. We measured how many couples meet each orb.

Orb around 180 degrees Share of couples Reading.
3 degrees 18.98 percent About one couple in five.
6 degrees 35.95 percent About one couple in three.
8 degrees 46.14 percent Just under half.
10 degrees 55.45 percent Just over half.

These shares are almost the same for every Venus pair. They come from the geometry of two 30-degree signs, not from Leo or Aquarius. Our page on Leo and Aquarius compatibility finds the same “just under half” for the two Sun signs. No other aspect forms across the sign line for this pair. So the rule is simple. Either the Venuses oppose, closely or loosely, or they form no aspect at all.

Linked by the aspect alone

In chapters 14 to 16, Ptolemy lists other ties between signs. We checked each one.

Chapter 14 names signs that “command” and “obey.” They lie at equal distance from the same equinox, so they rise over the horizon in equal time. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs in his note 80. Leo commands Sagittarius. Gemini commands Aquarius. So Leo and Aquarius each have a partner here, but not each other.

Chapter 15 names signs that “behold” each other, or have “equal power.” They lie at equal distance from the same solstice, so the days are just as long when the Sun is in either one. This chapter can be read two ways.

The first reading uses whole signs. Robbins lists the pairs in his note 83: Gemini and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Pisces and Scorpio, and Aquarius and Sagittarius. Leo pairs with Gemini. Aquarius pairs with Sagittarius. Again, not with each other.

The second reading uses exact degrees. Each degree is mirrored across the solstice point at 0 degrees Cancer. Lilly called such mirror points antiscia. By this reading, Leo mirrors Taurus, and Aquarius mirrors Scorpio. We counted the couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points. The count is zero at any margin up to 3 degrees.

Chapter 16 names “disjunct” signs, which share no tie at all. They sit one or five signs apart. Leo and Aquarius sit six apart, so they are not disjunct. The opposition keeps them in sight of each other. That is the whole of their bond in Ptolemy’s scheme: one aspect, and it is the one he calls disharmonious.

Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus

Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Sun sign Share of Leo Venus people Note.
Gemini 8.37 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Cancer 29.84 percent The largest group.
Leo 23.88 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Virgo 29.16 percent Venus one sign behind.
Libra 8.76 percent Venus two signs behind.
Sun sign Share of Aquarius Venus people Note.
Sagittarius 9.66 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Capricorn 28.48 percent Venus one sign ahead.
Aquarius 23.09 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Pisces 29.46 percent The largest group.
Aries 9.31 percent Venus two signs behind.

The two lists have no Sun sign in common. So a Leo Venus and an Aquarius Venus never share a Sun sign. Our pivot page on Venus sign compatibility explains the rule behind this for all twelve signs.

The likeliest couple is a Cancer Sun with a Pisces Sun. It covers 8.79 percent of these couples, about one in eleven. That is a trend, not a rule. The next three are close behind: Virgo with Pisces at 8.59 percent, Cancer with Capricorn at 8.50 percent, and Virgo with Capricorn at 8.30 percent. The same Cancer and Pisces couple leads another pair too, as Gemini Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility shows.

Here is a twist. The Venuses oppose, but the Suns rarely do. We sorted all couples by the angle between their two Sun signs.

Angle between the two Sun signs Share of couples Example.
Quincunx, five signs apart 38.02 percent Virgo Sun with Aquarius Sun.
Trine, four signs apart 25.58 percent Cancer Sun with Pisces Sun.
Opposition, six signs apart 24.23 percent Cancer Sun with Capricorn Sun.
Square, three signs apart 10.56 percent Virgo Sun with Sagittarius Sun.
Sextile, two signs apart 1.63 percent Gemini Sun with Aries Sun.

So only one couple in four has opposite Sun signs as well. A true Leo Sun with an Aquarius Sun is rarer still: 5.51 percent, about one couple in 18.

A Leo Venus and an Aquarius Venus in daily life

Astrologers read the two signs as a matched set. Both are fixed signs, the signs in the middle of each season. Fixed signs hold their shape. A Leo Venus stays loyal to a person. An Aquarius Venus stays loyal to a principle. Both can be stubborn, and each thinks the other is the stubborn one.

Leo is fire and Aquarius is air. Stephen Arroyo, in Astrology, Psychology and the Four Elements (1975), describes air as the element that fans fire. Many modern authors call fire and air a good match for that reason. Leo brings heat and a big heart. Aquarius brings light, space and a fresh angle.

The axis between them is personal love versus the group. Leo sits on the side of the heart and the self. Aquarius sits on the side of friends, causes and the wider world. A Leo Venus wants to hear, “I chose you, out of everyone.” An Aquarius Venus wants to hear, “You are free, and I still stay.”

Here is how the two love styles line up.

Theme Leo Venus Aquarius Venus.
Feels loved when Praised, seen and chosen first. Trusted, given space and treated as an equal.
Shows love by Big gestures, gifts and warm attention. Loyal friendship, honest talk and shared ideas.
Needs to hear That the bond is special. That the bond is free.
Can misread the other as Cold or distant. Needy or showy.

Where the friction sits, and how couples use it

Opposite signs share a theme and pull it in two directions. Astrologers call this polarity. For this pair the theme is how special love should feel. That can be a gift. Each partner shows the other the half of the story they forget.

Some couples in this pair find these questions useful.

  • What does “exclusive” mean to each of us, in plain words?
  • Which friends and causes stay part of our life, and how much time do they get?
  • How do we each like to be praised: in public, in private, or in writing?
  • When one of us needs space, how do we say it so the other does not feel dropped?
  • Which of our habits are fixed, and which can bend?

These are good questions for any couple. The Venus signs just give you a shared language to start the talk.

What the evidence says

No study has found that sign pairs predict love. The largest test we know of is by the sociologist David Voas. In 2007 he looked at 10.3 million married couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. Venus signs have never been tested at that scale. So read this page as a lens and a talking point, never as a verdict on your bond.

How we measured

We found each entry of Venus and the Sun into every sign from 1600 to 2400, to within a second, with the astronomy-engine code library. Then we added up the time Venus spent in each sign, and in each sign with each Sun sign. A second route, the Swiss Ephemeris, sampled every hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes. The two routes agree to within 0.01 point. The orb shares come from the true spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of 0.1 degree.

Frequently asked questions

Are Leo Venus and Aquarius Venus compatible?

By tradition they are opposite signs, so they attract and challenge each other. Fire and air are read as a good mix. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do, so treat this as a lens, not a verdict.

How rare is a Leo Venus and Aquarius Venus couple?

About one couple in 72, or 1.38 percent, measured from 1600 to 2400. It ranks 40th of the 78 Venus pairs and ties with Aries and Libra as the least common of the six opposite pairs.

Can a Leo Venus and an Aquarius Venus have the same Sun sign?

No. A Leo Venus goes with a Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra Sun. An Aquarius Venus goes with a Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces or Aries Sun. The two lists never overlap.

What did Ptolemy say about Leo and Aquarius?

In Tetrabiblos I.17 he gave Leo to the Sun and Aquarius to Saturn, and said Saturn’s signs face the houses of the lights because cold opposes heat. By his other rules, Leo and Aquarius neither command, obey nor behold each other. The opposition is their only tie.

Is the Venus opposition always exact in this pair?

No. Signs span 30 degrees, so the angle between the two Venuses varies. The opposition falls within 8 degrees in 46.14 percent of couples, and within 3 degrees in about one couple in five.
