Leo and Aquarius Compatibility: Opposite Signs, but Only 46% Truly Opposite

Leo and Aquarius compatibility starts with a simple fact: these two signs sit opposite each other on the zodiac wheel. Books call them a polarity, two ends of one line. So we put that line to the test. We checked how many Leo and Aquarius couples there are, and how many of them are truly opposite in the sky.

The first answer comes from 62 million US births. Pair two people born in the US at random, and they come out Leo and Aquarius about 1 time in 70. The second answer is the one no one prints. Opposite signs do not make opposite Suns. At the 8 degree margin most astrologers use, only 46 percent of Leo and Aquarius couples have Suns in a true opposition.

This guide gives you both numbers, the largest real test of love signs ever run, and what the old books say about this pair. Then it turns to daily life. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

The quick answer, in six lines

QuestionWhat we found.
How common is a Leo and Aquarius couple?About 1 random US couple in 70, or 1.42 percent.
What would an even split give?1 couple in 72, or 1.39 percent.
Did real marriages favor or avoid the pair?Neither: 140,875 couples found, against 141,210 expected by chance.
How far apart are the signs?Six signs, or 180 degrees, a link called an opposition.
How many couples have a true opposition?36 percent at a 6 degree margin, 46 percent at 8 degrees.
What ties the rulers?Ptolemy gave Saturn the sign opposite the Sun on purpose.

How common is a Leo and Aquarius couple?

Most pages on this pair start with a score, such as 70 percent. Nobody says how those scores are made, and you cannot check them. So we began with a count you can check: how many people are born under each sign.

Your Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. The Sun takes about a month to cross one. Leo season runs from about July 22 or 23 to August 22 or 23. Aquarius season runs from about January 19, 20 or 21 to February 18 or 19. The hour moves a little from year to year. That is why our guide to the zodiac signs and their dates checks each date against the real sky.

We then counted births. Two US data sets gave the same picture.

Source of the birthsShare born LeoShare born AquariusChance a random couple is Leo and Aquarius.
US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million, by exact date8.96 percent7.93 percent1.42 percent, or 1 in 70.
US births 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million, by exact date8.96 percent7.93 percent1.42 percent, or 1 in 70.
If all twelve signs were equal8.33 percent8.33 percent1.39 percent, or 1 in 72.

Why multiply by two? A couple can be a Leo woman with an Aquarius man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Leo share times the Aquarius share.

For scale, the most common mixed pair in the US data is Leo and Virgo, about 1 couple in 62. The Leo and Pisces pairing comes out at 1 in 69. Leo and Aquarius sit just below it, at 1 in 70.

Why there are more Leos than Aquarians

Leo is the most common Sun sign in US births. Aquarius is one of the rarest. For every 100 Aquarians born, about 113 Leos are born. Two plain facts explain the gap, and neither one is about character.

First, the seasons differ in length. The Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, and it moves fastest then. So the Sun seems to hurry through the winter signs. Aquarius lasts 29.59 days on average. In July the Earth is far from the Sun and slow, so Leo lasts 31.29 days. That is close to two extra days.

Second, the US has more births per day in late summer. In the 2000 to 2014 count, a Leo day saw about 5 percent more births than the average day. An Aquarius day saw about 2 percent fewer. The peak follows when couples conceive, which is in late fall.

Put the long season and the busy days together, and Leo tops the count. Aquarius loses on both. Our guide to the Leo sign and its season ranks all twelve seasons by length, with Leo tenth from the shortest. Aquarius is third.

What ten million marriages showed

A birth count tells you how common the pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. For that, the best test we know is a British one.

In 2007, the sociologist David Voas, then at the University of Manchester, looked at every married couple living together in England and Wales in the 2001 census. That was more than ten million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a simple thing. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict, and do others marry less?

His answer was no. The raw table did show a small excess of couples with the same sign. But once he fixed census errors, such as one birthday typed in for both spouses, the pairs matched chance. He called it the largest test of astrology ever done. His paper is titled “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.”

We pulled the Leo and Aquarius cells from his first table. This is the raw count, before his fixes.

Couple in the 2001 censusFoundExpected by chanceGap.
Leo husband, Aquarius wife70,323 couples70,653 couples0.5 percent fewer.
Aquarius husband, Leo wife70,552 couples70,557 couplesAlmost exact, 5 couples fewer.
Both together140,875 couples141,210 couples0.2 percent fewer.

The expected count is the number of Leo husbands times the number of Aquarius wives, divided by all couples. It is what you get if people pick partners with no regard to sign. The real count lands within a quarter of one percent of it. Leo and Aquarius do not seek each other out, and they do not avoid each other either.

So what is left for astrology to offer? Not a verdict. It offers a set of symbols, a way to talk about two styles of warmth. The rest of this guide uses it that way.

Six signs apart: the shape of the pair

Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count forward from Leo: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius. That is six steps. Count the other way and it is six steps too. Six signs of 30 degrees make 180 degrees, half the circle.

Astrologers call this link an opposition. Each sign has one opposite, so the twelve signs form six pairs, or six axes. Leo and Aquarius make one of them.

Opposite signs are unlike in one way and alike in two. Here is how that works for this pair.

Trait on the usual listsLeoAquarius.
ElementFire, hot and dry in the old theoryAir, hot and moist in the old theory.
ModeFixed, a sign that holdsFixed, a sign that holds.
Gender in the old booksMasculine, of the dayMasculine, of the day.
RulerThe SunSaturn in the old books, Uranus in modern ones.
Season in the northHigh summerDeep winter.

Fire and air share heat in the old theory, so the two elements get on. Both signs are fixed, which Ptolemy called solid. He meant that the season has settled in by the time the Sun gets there. Both are masculine, the old word for the active signs. The big split is the ruler and the season: the brightest body against the coldest, July against January.

Opposite by sign, but not always by degree

Here is the part most guides skip. A sign is a 30 degree slice. Two people can be six signs apart without being 180 degrees apart.

Take a Leo born on July 24, with the Sun near the start of Leo. Pair that Leo with an Aquarius born on February 17, near the end of Aquarius. The gap between their Suns is about 207 degrees. The signs are opposite. The Suns are 27 degrees away from a true opposition.

Astrologers only count an aspect when two points sit close to the exact angle. The allowed margin is called the orb. For an opposition, most modern books use an orb of 6 to 10 degrees. So we measured how many Leo and Aquarius couples fall inside each orb.

Orb, the allowed margin around 180 degreesShare of Leo and Aquarius couples inside it.
1 degree, a near exact opposition6.6 percent, about 1 couple in 15.
3 degrees19.0 percent, about 1 couple in 5.
6 degrees36.0 percent, about 1 couple in 3.
8 degrees, the most common choice46.2 percent, just under half.
10 degrees, a wide margin55.6 percent, just over half.

So at the usual 8 degrees, most Leo and Aquarius couples are not a true Sun opposition. They are opposite signs with Suns that miss the exact line. The sign link still holds. The degree link holds in fewer than half.

Why these numbers? Leo births spread almost evenly over the 30 degrees of Leo. The same holds for Aquarius. When two even spreads meet, the gap forms a tent shape, highest at 180 degrees and falling off to each side. Real births match the even case to within a tenth of a point.

Find your opposite birthday

If you are a Leo, you can find the Aquarius birthdays that face yours. The table below uses noon in US Central time. Dates can shift by a day from year to year.

Leo birthdayExact opposite Aquarius birthdayAquarius birthdays within 8 degrees.
July 23January 20January 20 to January 28.
July 27January 24January 20 to February 1.
August 1January 29January 21 to February 6.
August 6February 3January 26 to February 10.
August 11February 7January 30 to February 15.
August 16February 12February 4 to February 18.
August 22February 18February 10 to February 18.

Notice the Leos at the edges. A Leo born on July 23 or August 22 has a short list. About half of the 8 degree window falls outside Aquarius, in Capricorn or Pisces. A mid-August Leo has the full window of about 16 days.

There is one more quirk. The exact opposite point is not half a year away. From a Leo birthday, the Sun takes about 180.6 days to reach the opposite degree. The trip back takes about 184.6 days. The fast leg is the one through winter, when the Earth is near the Sun. So your opposite birthday lands about two days short of six months.

What Ptolemy said: the Sun’s house faces Saturn’s

The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. It is one of the founding textbooks of Western astrology. In Book 1 he sets out how the signs relate and who rules each one.

First, the rulers. Ptolemy gave the Sun and Moon the two signs closest to our zenith, the point straight overhead. Leo went to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon. Then he gave Saturn the two signs opposite them, Capricorn and Aquarius. His reason is plain. Saturn is cold, as opposed to heat, and farthest from the lights. These are cold, wintry signs. And the opposite link, he says, is not a kind one.

So the Leo and Aquarius axis was built on purpose. It sets the brightest light against the most distant planet. In the Loeb edition this is chapter 17 of Book 1.

William Lilly, the English astrologer, kept the scheme in his Christian Astrology of 1647. In his table, each planet is weak in the sign opposite its home. The Sun is in detriment, which means out of place, in Aquarius. Saturn is in detriment in Leo. Each ruler is a guest in the other’s house.

The Sun’s other weak sign is Libra, where it is in fall, and our page on Libra and Aquarius compatibility follows the pair that joins both.

Second, the links between signs. Ptolemy counts four aspects: opposition, trine, square and sextile. He calls the trine and sextile harmonious and the square and opposition not. His stated reason is that the tense links join a masculine sign to a feminine one. That fits the square. It does not fit this opposition, since Leo and Aquarius are both masculine in his own list. Even the old books were not always tidy.

What Leo and Aquarius are not matters too. Ptolemy says two signs “behold” each other when they sit at the same distance from Cancer or Capricorn. Such signs have days of the same length. Leo and Aquarius do not qualify. Nor do they “command” and “obey,” a link for signs the same distance from Aries or Libra. Their mirror signs differ as well. The mirror of Leo across the solstice line is Taurus. The mirror of Aquarius is Scorpio.

So the whole bond is the opposition itself. It is a clear bond, and a visible one. In the old picture, opposite signs look straight at each other across the wheel.

Heart and head in daily life

Here is how the two styles look side by side. These are sign portraits, not facts about any person you know.

Leo, as a fixed fire sign, likes warmth that shows. Praise out loud. Plans with a clear lead. Loyalty that is stated, then kept. Leo wants to be seen, one person at a time, and wants to see the partner shine too.

Aquarius, as a fixed air sign, likes warmth that thinks. A good debate. A shared cause. A friend group that feels like a team. Aquarius cares about people as a whole, and shows love through ideas and fair play.

Put them together and you get the classic axis of the one and the many. Leo speaks for the heart of one person. Aquarius speaks for the group. Sign books cast this pair as a public team, where one brings the glow and the other brings the plan.

Both signs are fixed, and that cuts two ways. Once they commit, they stay. Once they dig in, they stay dug in. The pair shares staying power and shares the risk of a standoff.

The Sun sets the direction, and the Moon sets the daily weather. For that side of the pair, see how Leo and Aquarius Moons compare in our Moon guide.

Where the friction shows up

With the same mode and a friendly element pair, the snags are about focus, not values. Here are four common ones from the sign books, with a small step for each.

Where it snagsWhat Leo feelsWhat Aquarius feelsA small step that helps.
AttentionUnseen when the partner looks at the crowdHemmed in when asked to look at one personPlan one night a week that is only for the two of you.
PraiseCold when thanks stays in the headPut on the spot by big shows of thanksSay one clear thank you out loud each day.
ConflictHurt by a calm, detached tonePushed by strong feelingName the feeling first, then the idea.
StandoffsSure the heart is rightSure the logic is rightAgree who leads on which topic, and swap each month.

None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with different styles can use them. That is the honest point: the sign gives a name to a pattern, and the fix lives in plain talk.

What each partner finds charming is a Venus question, not a Sun one. Our page on Leo and Aquarius Venus signs covers that side.

The rest of the chart counts for more

A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Astrologers who compare two charts, a method called synastry, look at all of them. Three matter most for love.

The Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. The Venus sign shows what they find lovely and how they show care. Mars shows how they chase what they want and how they argue.

So a Leo Sun can have a Virgo Moon and a Cancer Venus. An Aquarius Sun can have a Leo Moon and a Pisces Venus. Each of those changes the picture more than the Sun pair does. Voas expects this reply in his paper. He answers that the Sun sign is the part of astrology most people use, and that any real effect, however small, would still show in ten million couples.

How many Aquarians are born with Saturn, their old ruler, at home? Our guide to the Aquarius sign and its rulers gives the answer. If you know both birth dates and times, the full chart is where the detail lives. If you only know the Sun signs, treat this page as a starting map, not the ground.

How we measured

Birth shares come from real daily counts. We took US births for every date from 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all, from the Social Security Administration file. We checked them against the 1994 to 2003 file of the National Center for Health Statistics. Both were compiled by the site FiveThirtyEight. For each date we placed the Sun with exact entry times into each sign, in US Central time. A day on the cusp was split by the share of hours on each side.

The orb figures used two routes. Route one took the 2000 to 2014 births and placed the Sun with the Swiss Ephemeris, 96 times per day. It built a count of births for each hundredth of a degree in Leo and in Aquarius. Then it paired every Leo degree with every Aquarius degree, weighted by births. Route two took the 1994 to 2003 births and a different code library, Astronomy Engine, at 48 steps per day. Both gave 46.2 percent at 8 degrees and 36.0 percent at 6 degrees. A simple even spread gives the same, since one minus 22 thirtieths squared is 46.2 percent.

Season lengths come from exact entry times of the Sun, for every year from 1600 to 2400. The opposite birthday dates come from the same search, for 2001, 2006 and 2011. The marriage counts come from Table 1 of the Voas paper, which reproduces census table C0694 for England and Wales, 2001.

The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date. People move, and many couples meet across borders. The US figures are a close guide, not an exact census of couples.

Questions people ask

Are Leo and Aquarius compatible?

No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, over ten million marriages in England and Wales, found Leo and Aquarius couples at almost exactly the rate chance predicts. As a symbol, the pair joins fire and air on one axis, and both signs hold firm once they commit.

What percentage of couples are Leo and Aquarius?

About 1.42 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 70, based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. An even split of signs would give 1 in 72.

Are Leo and Aquarius a true opposition?

By sign, always. By degree, not always. At an 8 degree orb, 46 percent of Leo and Aquarius couples have Suns in a true opposition. At 6 degrees, 36 percent do.

Why are Leo and Aquarius opposites?

They sit six signs apart on the wheel. In Ptolemy’s scheme, the Sun rules Leo and Saturn rules Aquarius. He placed Saturn’s houses opposite the lights on purpose, since Saturn stands for cold and distance.

Is Aquarius a rare Sun sign?

Among US births, it is the second rarest, at 7.93 percent, just above Capricorn. Its season is short, about 29.6 days, and it falls in a low month for births.

Do I need a full chart to judge a Leo and Aquarius match?

For any real detail, yes. The Moon, Venus and Mars signs of both partners say more about daily life than the Sun pair alone.
