Aquarius sign symbol, the water bearer pouring a jar, on a night sky with Saturn and Uranus

The Aquarius Sign: Your Modern Ruler Is Almost Never There

Each page about the Aquarius sign says the same thing. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet of revolt and invention. That line is printed by Google’s own summary panel, by the Almanac, and by each big astrology site.

Here is what none of them tell you. Uranus needs 84 years to circle the zodiac. It sits in one sign for about seven years, then moves on. So a person born under the Aquarius sign has Uranus in Aquarius only if they were born inside one of those rare seven-year stretches.

I measured it across ten full laps of Uranus around the zodiac, from January 1600 to March 2437. The answer is 9.40 percent of Aquarius Suns. Nine Aquarians in ten do not have their modern ruler in their own sign. And the ones who do share it with every baby born in the same years, whatever their sign. A slow planet does not describe a person. It dates a generation.

There is a second problem, and it hits a birth date rather than a planet. Google’s panel gives the Aquarius sign the range January 20 to February 18. I checked that range against the real place of the Sun for 33,238 days in a row. If you were born on January 20, that table calls you an Aquarius. In 45 of the 91 years I checked, counted in Universal Time, you were still a Capricorn. That is 49 percent. A coin toss. Clock time in New York shifts these counts by a few years either way.

This page gives you the dates that hold up, the traits read from structure, and four counts you can check yourself. Our wider guide to all twelve zodiac signs runs the same method across the whole year. This page goes deep on one sign.

The modern ruler of the Aquarius sign is almost never home

A ruling planet is the body the old writers put in charge of a sign. Aquarius has two of them, and they came from different centuries.

Saturn is the old one. Claudius Ptolemy gives Saturn charge of Aquarius in the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. Vettius Valens works the same rule through his case charts in the same century. William Lilly still prints it in Christian Astrology in 1647.

Ptolemy also puts Aquarius and Cancer at the two ends of the Moon’s half of the zodiac, a tie our page on Cancer and Aquarius compatibility explores.

Uranus is the new one. The planet was found by William Herschel in 1781. Astrologers handed it Aquarius soon after. So the newer ruler is younger than the car.

Now put a number on it. Start with the window that flatters Uranus most: people born from 1950 to 2010. I checked the sky every 72 minutes across those years and kept every moment with the Sun in Aquarius. Then I looked at where Uranus and Saturn stood.

Ruling planet of Aquarius and the era it comes fromPercent of Aquarius Suns born 1950 to 2010 with it in Aquarius
Uranus, the modern ruler since 178113.33 percent.
Saturn, the ruler in all sources from Ptolemy to Lilly9.52 percent.

Read the Uranus row and stop there for a second. Even in the window that flatters it most, 87 Aquarians in every 100 do not have Uranus in their own sign. Our guide to Uranus in your chart covers what the planet does once you find it.

Why I ran the same count twice, and what moved

That 13.33 percent is not the real answer. It is a trick of the years I picked, and this sign is the textbook case of it.

Here is why. Between 1950 and 2010, Uranus passed through Aquarius exactly once, from 1995 to 2003. That is one stay of about eight years inside a window of sixty. Eight over sixty is 13 percent. Move the window and the number moves with it.

So I ran it three ways.

Span of years countedHow many times Uranus visited Aquarius in that spanPercent of Aquarius Suns with Uranus in Aquarius
The years 1950 to 2010, a sixty year windowOne visit, from 1995 to 200313.33 percent.
The years 1900 to 2100, a two hundred year windowThree visits, in 1912, 1995 and 207911.86 percent.
The years 1600 to 2437, ten full laps of UranusTen visits, one per lap9.40 percent.

The short window inflates the answer by 40 percent. The long one settles it. Over ten full laps, Uranus spends 8.97 percent of its time in Aquarius, and 9.40 percent of Aquarius Suns are born with it there.

Why not a flat 8.33 percent, which is one twelfth? Because the path of Uranus is an ellipse, not a circle. The planet runs faster at one end and slower at the other. Its slowest signs are Aries and Pisces at about 9.1 percent each. Its fastest is Virgo at 7.6 percent. Aquarius sits near the slow end, which is why it clears 8.33 percent by a hair.

This is the honest lesson of the whole page. A figure drawn from a short window can be off by half, and nothing in the figure itself warns you. I print the long run as the answer and the short one as the trap.

Each stretch Uranus has spent in Aquarius since 1577

These are dated facts, and no competing page prints them. I found the crossings by narrowing the moment down to the day. Uranus turns backward in the sky once a year, so it can cross a border, retreat, and cross again. The spans below run from the first entry to the final exit.

Visit of Uranus to the sign of Aquarius, in orderMonth and year the planet first entered AquariusMonth and year it left Aquarius for good
First visit in this tableFebruary 1577January 1585.
Second visitApril 1660January 1669.
Third visitMarch 1744December 1752.
Fourth visitFebruary 1828February 1836.
Fifth visitJanuary 1912January 1920.
Sixth visit, the recent oneApril 1995December 2003.
Seventh visit, still aheadMarch 2079February 2087.
Eighth visit in this tableFebruary 2163January 2171.

Look at the gaps. A visit starts about 84 years after the last one. That is one orbit of Uranus, and it is why your grandparents and you cannot both have it.

Now the part that matters for reading a chart. If you were born between April 1 and June 8, 1995, between January 12, 1996 and March 10, 2003, or between September 14 and December 30, 2003, in New York time, you have Uranus in Aquarius. So does everyone else born in those spans. Your Taurus cousin has it. Your Cancer classmate has it. It is a mark of the birth years, not of the person.

The old writers had no such problem, because the seven bodies they used all move fast. Modern writers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo are clear that the slow planets describe a whole age group first and a person second. Our page on the outer planets and what they mark works through that split.

Saturn is the older ruler, and it is home one year in ten

Saturn moves faster than Uranus. It circles the zodiac in about 29 years and spends roughly two and a half years per sign. So a Saturn return to Aquarius comes round three times a century, not once.

That should make Saturn the reliable ruler. It is not, and here is the count. The question is how many Aquarius Suns have Saturn in Aquarius. Over 27 full laps of Saturn, from 1613 to 2408, the answer is 9.87 percent. Inside the 1950 to 2010 window it comes out at 9.52 percent, and inside 1900 to 2100 at 10.24 percent. Call it one Aquarian in ten.

So even the ancient ruler of the Aquarius sign is at home for only one Aquarian in ten. Set that beside the other signs we have measured on this site.

Saturn rules Capricorn too, which makes Capricorn and Aquarius compatibility a match of two neighbor signs under one lord.

Saturn also rules any planet that lands in Aquarius, and our guide to Mars in Aquarius measures how often Saturn can even see it.

Zodiac sign and the ruling planet the old books give itPercent of people with that Sun sign who also have the ruler in that sign, 1600 to 2400
Leo, ruled by the Sun100 percent, because the Sun defines the sign.
Virgo, ruled by Mercury49.50 percent of Virgo Suns.
Gemini, ruled by Mercury47.85 percent of Gemini Suns.
Aries, ruled by Mars12.27 percent of Aries Suns.
Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter10.22 percent of Sagittarius Suns.
Capricorn, ruled by Saturn10.15 percent of Capricorn Suns.
Aquarius, ruled by Saturn9.87 percent of Aquarius Suns.
Cancer, ruled by the Moon8.20 percent of Cancer Suns.
Aquarius, ruled by Uranus in modern books9.40 percent of Aquarius Suns, over ten laps of Uranus from 1600 to 2437.

The Jupiter and Saturn rows count whole laps only, so a part lap at the end of the window cannot tip them. Jupiter is measured over 67 full laps, from 1607 to 2402. Saturn is measured over 27 full laps, from 1613 to 2408.

Only Leo has a ruler that is always home. Everyone else is reading a planet that sits somewhere else. Our guide to Saturn in your chart covers what the planet does wherever it lands.

One detail from the old scheme is worth knowing. Saturn holds two signs, and they do different jobs. Each planet was given a day house and a night house. Aquarius is the day house of Saturn and Capricorn is the night house. That is set out the same way in our guide to the Capricorn sign, which shares the January 20 border with this one.

Our page on Saturn in Aquarius lists every visit from 1900 to 2100, with the retrograde gaps that change the answer for some birth dates.

Aquarius dates: three start days, not one

The Sun does not move by the calendar. It crosses into a sign at a clock moment, and that moment drifts from year to year. A printed border hides the drift.

Here is where the start of Aquarius actually fell across the 91 years from 1940 to 2030, in Universal Time.

Calendar date on which the Sun entered AquariusNumber of years out of the 91 I checked
January 197 years.
January 2077 years.
January 217 years.

Three calendar dates, not one. Only five signs of the twelve spread over three dates like this: Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Aquarius. The other seven use two dates each.

The far end is steadier. The Sun leaves Aquarius on February 18 in 38 of those years and on February 19 in 53. So the honest range is this. The Sun enters on January 19, 20 or 21, and leaves on February 18 or 19.

Notice that the published tables cannot even agree with each other. Google’s panel says January 20 to February 18. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says January 20 to February 19. Wikipedia says about January 21 to February 19. All three are rounding the same moving border in different directions.

Born on January 20? Read this part first

One birth date carries almost all of the damage. Here is how the common table scores on each edge day of the Aquarius season.

Birth date in questionSign the common table hands youSign you were really born under, in the years the table failsNumber of the 91 years the table gets it wrong
January 20AquariusCapricorn45 years, or 49 percent.
February 19PiscesAquarius12 years, or 13 percent.
February 18AquariusPisces4 years, or 4 percent.
January 19CapricornThe table never fails on this day0 years, or 0 percent.

Read the first row twice. Almost half the people told they are Aquarius on January 20 are Capricorn. That is the least reliable border in the zodiac after October 23.

The second row cuts the other way. If you were born on February 19, the table calls you a Pisces. In 12 of the 91 years you were an Aquarius. So the sign loses a day at one end and gains one at the other.

There is no such thing as being half Capricorn and half Aquarius. The Sun stood in one sign at the minute you were born. Get your birth hour and your birth place, and the answer is exact.

This season is the third shortest of the year

The twelve signs are equal slices of sky. Each one covers 30 degrees. They are not equal slices of time. Earth’s path around the Sun is an ellipse, and our planet runs faster when it is close in. From here, the Sun looks like it hurries through some signs.

I timed the crossings from 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window, by two separate routes, astronomy-engine and the Swiss Ephemeris. Aquarius comes out at 29.592 days, which is 8.102 percent of the year. That is third shortest of the twelve.

Rank from the shortest solar season to the longestName of the zodiac signMean length of the season in daysPercent of the whole year
1 of 12Capricorn29.446 days8.062 percent.
2 of 12Sagittarius29.557 days8.092 percent.
3 of 12Aquarius29.592 days8.102 percent.
4 of 12Scorpio29.899 days8.186 percent.
5 of 12Pisces29.961 days8.203 percent.
6 of 12Libra30.389 days8.320 percent.
7 of 12Aries30.462 days8.340 percent.
8 of 12Virgo30.900 days8.460 percent.
9 of 12Taurus30.964 days8.478 percent.
10 of 12Leo31.292 days8.567 percent.
11 of 12Gemini31.330 days8.578 percent.
12 of 12Cancer31.451 days8.611 percent.

Two checks on that table. The twelve lengths add to 365.2427 days, against a tropical year of 365.2422 days, so the sum is out by under a minute. And the two routes agree on every row to within a ten-thousandth of a day.

The gap from the shortest sign to the longest is 2.005 days. The cause is the same one the ellipse gives Uranus. Earth reaches its closest point to the Sun in early January, so it is still moving fast through Aquarius season. That gives Aquarius the third shortest season of the twelve. Real birth records add a twist. In US births it ranks second rarest in the Social Security file for 2000 to 2014, and third in the CDC file for 1994 to 2003, just behind Sagittarius. Holidays and hospital schedules move births a little, on top of the sky.

Aquarius is an air sign, and the water bearer is a trap

This is the single most common error about the Aquarius sign, and it sits on page one of Google right now. A major beauty title ranks in the top ten with a line that opens: Aquarius is a water sign. It is not.

Aquarius is one of the three air signs, with Gemini and Libra. The symbol misleads because it shows a figure pouring water from a jar. The Latin name means water carrier. So people read the water and stop.

Here is why the symbol is not the element. The picture comes from Babylonian star lore, where the figure marked the rainy season of the year. The element system is a second scheme, worked out later by Greek writers and fixed by Ptolemy. The two were never meant to match.

Read the jar again with that in mind. The figure is not in the water. The figure is carrying it and handing it out. That is a picture of distribution, which is an air idea rather than a water one. Air, in the old grouping, covers thought, language and exchange between people. Our page on the air element in your chart goes further on all three air signs.

The sign is fixed, which is the second half of the frame. Fixed signs hold a place rather than start or change one. Aquarius sits in the middle of winter in the northern half of the world. Put fixed and air side by side and you get a mind that settles on a view and stays there. Our guide to the fixed modality covers the other three.

The Sun is in exile here, and that is the point

The old writers scored a planet by the sign it sits in. A planet in its own sign is at home. The sign opposite its home is called detriment, or exile, and the planet is read as weakest there. Ptolemy sets the whole scheme out in the Tetrabiblos.

The Sun rules Leo. Aquarius sits directly opposite Leo. So the Sun is in detriment in Aquarius.

That is a strange thing to find in a Sun sign guide. The body that names your sign is the body the old system calls weak there. Only two signs carry that problem. In Aquarius the Sun is in exile, and in Libra the Sun is in fall, which our guide to the Libra sign works through.

The two signs sit four apart in the air triangle, and our page on Libra and Aquarius compatibility looks at couples who join them.

Planet and the score it receives in the sign of AquariusName of that condition in the old booksWhat it points to in a reading
Saturn in AquariusIts own day houseRules, structure and distance, at full strength.
The Sun in AquariusDetriment, also called exileThe self is read through the group rather than alone.
Uranus in AquariusHome in modern books onlyAdded after 1781, and present for one Aquarian in eleven.
Neptune in AquariusFall, in some modern tables onlyDisputed, and I will not print it as settled.
Any planet exalted hereNone in the classical schemeAquarius has no exaltation and no classical fall.

Two honest notes on that table. First, the classical scheme gives Aquarius no exalted body at all. Seven signs hold an exaltation and five do not, and this is one of the five. Second, the Neptune row is modern and contested. Some twentieth century tables put Neptune in fall in Aquarius, on the ground that it rules Pisces and is exalted in Leo. Other modern tables leave the box empty. The sources do not agree, so I am telling you they do not agree. Our guide to detriment and exile explains the scoring itself.

What does a Sun in exile mean in practice? Not a weak character. The old reading is that the Sun wants to shine as one person, and this sign asks it to work as one node in a network. That is the whole Aquarius reputation, written in a scoring table centuries before anyone wrote a listicle.

Aquarius traits, read from the structure

Here is the picture this site uses. A birth chart is a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one area of life: money, work, love, home. The planets are the furniture. Wherever a planet sits, it furnishes that room.

Our guide to the Sun in Aquarius counts which room the Sun lands in for US births, hour by hour.

Four things set the Aquarius furniture. The element is air. The mode is fixed. The old ruler is Saturn. The room is the eleventh, which covers friends, groups and the causes a person joins. Our guide to the eleventh house goes further on that room.

Work out from those four and the trait list stops being a set of adjectives.

Aquarius trait as it is usually namedWhere the old reading gets it from
IndependentThe Sun in exile. The self is not the centre here.
Cares about groups and causesThe eleventh room, whose subject is exactly that.
Thinks in ideas rather than feelingsThe air element, which the old writers tie to mind and speech.
Holds a view and will not moveFixed modality, plus Saturn, which the old books read as rule.
Emotionally cool or distantSaturn again, read as distance and boundary.
Rebellious and drawn to the newUranus, and this is the modern layer, not the old one.
Fair to the point of coldnessAir plus Saturn. Rules applied evenly feel cold to one person.
Hard to pin down in privateThe same distance, seen from close up.

Two of those rows deserve a warning. The rebel line and the invention line come from Uranus alone. You have now seen the count. For nine Aquarians in ten, Uranus is somewhere else in the chart, so that layer belongs to a different room of the house. The old Saturn reading is the one that holds for every Aquarian.

That is the difference between a hellenistic reading and a modern one. The hellenistic reading gives you a Saturn sign: ordered, distant, bound by rule. The modern reading gives you a Uranus sign: strange, free, ahead of its time. Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo both keep the Saturn layer underneath and read the Uranus layer on top. Most web pages print only the top layer.

The clash between belonging and refusal is also the theme of Black Moon Lilith in Aquarius, a modern point that one chart in three places in a different sign.

The planets an Aquarius is allowed to have

This is the part no competing page prints, and you can check each line of it.

Mercury and Venus circle closer to the Sun than we do. Seen from Earth, neither one strays far from it. Mercury stays inside a window of about 28 degrees. Venus stays inside about 47. That is why you catch Venus just after sunset or just before dawn, and never at midnight.

Now do the sum. The Sun crosses 30 degrees of Aquarius. Add Mercury’s narrow window to each end and Mercury is boxed into a short stretch of sky. Three signs fall inside it. The other nine are not rare. They are impossible.

Sign Mercury can occupy for a person with an Aquarius SunPercent of Aquarius Suns, 1600 to 2400
Mercury in Aquarius52.84 percent.
Mercury in Capricorn32.86 percent.
Mercury in Pisces14.31 percent.
The nine other signs, added up0 percent, at every moment.

Nine signs at a flat zero. Mercury in Leo for an Aquarius Sun does not exist. Nor does Mercury in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. In 800 years of sky, from 1600 to 2400, Mercury never once left those three signs while the Sun was in Aquarius.

Mercury is the body the old writers tie to how a person thinks and speaks. So an Aquarius has one of three thinking styles, and the birth date alone narrows it down. Mercury in Aquarius, for just over half, means a mind that argues from principle. Mercury in Capricorn, for a third, means a mind that plans and states things plainly. Mercury in Pisces, for one in seven, means a mind that works by image and hunch.

Seen from the other side, half of the people with Mercury in Aquarius are not Aquarius Suns at all.

Venus does the same trick with a wider window. Five signs are possible and seven score zero.

Sign Venus can occupy for a person with an Aquarius SunPercent of Aquarius Suns, 1600 to 2400
Venus in Pisces29.32 percent.
Venus in Capricorn28.76 percent.
Venus in Aquarius23.24 percent.
Venus in Sagittarius9.41 percent.
Venus in Aries9.27 percent.
The seven other signs, added up0 percent, at every moment.

Venus in Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio cannot happen for an Aquarius Sun. I counted over 800 years because Venus repeats its pattern against Earth on an eight year beat, so a short span of years does not sample it evenly. Pisces and Capricorn come out level at the top, about half a point apart, with Aquarius close behind. Read the top three as a group of near equals, each close to a quarter or more.

Venus is the body the old writers tie to how a person loves. So an Aquarius loves in one of five styles, and no others are on the menu.

Mars sits outside our orbit, so it is free to go anywhere. All twelve turned up. The crowded end is a cluster of five, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Sagittarius and Aries, each between 10 and 12 percent. Call them level. The thin end is Leo, Cancer and Virgo, each between 4 and 5 percent. An Aquarius with Mars in Leo is the rarest mix, which fits, since Leo is the sign opposite.

Aquarius rising is rarer than one in twelve

Your rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the slice of zodiac climbing over the horizon at the minute you were born. It needs your birth hour. It shifts one degree every four minutes.

People expect one in twelve here, which is 8.33 percent. Aquarius does not give you that. For US births, Aquarius rising comes out at 6.13 percent of everyone. That makes it one of the three rarest ascendants, level with Taurus and just above Pisces and Aries.

Now the check that makes it mean something. Among Aquarius Suns alone, Aquarius rising comes out at 6.25 percent. The gap is about a tenth of a point. If babies were born evenly around the clock, the two figures would match exactly, at 6.22 percent. The small gap comes from hospital hours, not from the Sun. Having an Aquarius Sun gives you almost no push toward an Aquarius ascendant.

Group of charts being countedPercent of them with Aquarius rising
All US births, whatever the Sun is doing6.13 percent.
Only US births with an Aquarius Sun6.25 percent.
What a flat one in twelve would give8.333 percent.

The cause has nothing to do with the Sun, and the old writers knew it. Signs do not all climb the horizon at the same speed from the places where people live. They split the circle into signs of long ascension, from Cancer through Sagittarius, and signs of short ascension, from Capricorn through Gemini. Slow risers hang on the horizon and catch more births.

Aquarius is a short ascension sign, and it sits well inside that group rather than on its edge. My counts back the old writers up. Scorpio rises for 10.3 percent of US births, Aquarius for 6.1, and Aries for only 5.2. So Aquarius rising is about three fifths as common as Scorpio rising, and that is a fact of shape rather than a rule about people.

The same count for other signs tells the same story. Among Scorpio Suns, Scorpio rising comes out at 9.8 percent, against 10.3 for all US births. Among Capricorn Suns, Capricorn rising comes out at 8.6 percent, against 7.9. The gaps are small and run both ways. Your Sun sign and your rising sign are close to two separate draws.

Aquarius love matches, without the scoreboard

Take the Sun sign answer first, and take it quickly, because it is the weak one. The old pairing rules point Aquarius at the other air signs, Gemini and Libra, and at Aries and Sagittarius for movement without fuss. They flag Taurus and Scorpio as the hard ones, since three fixed signs at right angles all refuse to move. Leo sits opposite, which reads as pull and friction in one package.

Our page on Sagittarius and Aquarius compatibility counts how rare that pair is in US births.

For one of those hard pairs, our page on Taurus and Aquarius compatibility counts how often the two signs meet and how Venus and Saturn share ground.

For the Scorpio side of that, our page on Scorpio and Aquarius compatibility counts how many such couples have Suns in a true square.

Even that pull is looser than it sounds: our look at Leo and Aquarius couples finds the two Suns truly opposite in under half of them.

Now the stronger answer, and this is where my counts earn their keep. For any Aquarius you meet, Venus sits in one of five signs and Mercury in one of three. That is fifteen pairings, and all fifteen come from the birth date alone.

An Aquarius with Venus in Capricorn wants proof and commitment. An Aquarius with Venus in Pisces wants to merge. Same Sun sign. A new person to live with. Sun sign match lists cannot see that gap, which is why they keep clashing.

Our page on Aquarius and Pisces compatibility adds one more tie: the two modern rulers swapped signs from 2003 to 2011.

How I measured all of this

Here is the method, so you can check it rather than trust me.

For the dates I used an ephemeris. An ephemeris is a table of where a body in the sky sits at a given moment, worked out from the laws of motion. I asked it for the Sun’s place once a day for each day from 1940 to 2030. That is 33,238 days. I set each answer beside the printed table and counted the days where the two disagree. For the crossing moments I narrowed each one to the second by halving the interval over and over.

For the planet counts I checked the sky every 72 minutes from 1600 to 2400, a span of 800 years, and kept every moment with the Sun in Aquarius. Saturn is counted over 27 full laps, from 1613 to 2408. Then I timed each sign change to the second with a second library, Swiss Ephemeris, and the two runs agree. I used the tropical zodiac, the one Western astrology uses, which ties the signs to the equinox rather than to the star patterns. Houses are whole sign houses.

For the rising sign I used US births. Each county counts by its Census population, with its real time zone and daylight saving time. Each birth hour counts by its share in the 2024 CDC birth records, month by month and weekday by weekday. I ran every day from 1940 to 2030, and checked a sample of days with Swiss Ephemeris. The ascendant depends on latitude and on the hour, so both had to be real.

All sets of percents here add to 100. I checked each one. The twelve season lengths add to 365.2427 days against a true year of 365.2422.

The window test deserves its own line, because this page turns on it. Any figure that involves a slow planet depends on the years you sample. I ran the Uranus count on a sixty year window, on a two hundred year window, and on ten full laps of the zodiac. One lap is one turn of Uranus around the Sun, measured against the signs. It lasts about 83.7 years, so ten laps run from 1 January 1600 to March 2437. The three answers were 13.33, 11.86 and 9.40 percent. Astronomy Engine and Swiss Ephemeris both give 9.40. Only the last one is the real rate, and I print the other two so you can see how far a short window can throw you.

One last point of honesty. Astrology is not a science, and I will not dress it up as one. What I measured here is the astronomy underneath it, which is exact. What the old writers read into those positions is a symbolic language with a long written record, and that is a claim of a different kind.

Frequently asked questions about the Aquarius sign

What are the real Aquarius dates?

The Sun enters Aquarius on January 19, 20 or 21 depending on the year, and leaves on February 18 or 19. The fixed range of January 20 to February 18 that most sites print is a rounding. It gives the wrong sign to anyone born on January 20 in 45 of the 91 years I checked, and to anyone born on February 19 in 12 of them. Your birth hour settles it.

Is Aquarius a water sign?

No. Aquarius is an air sign, with Gemini and Libra. The confusion comes from the symbol, which shows a figure pouring water from a jar, and from the Latin name, which means water carrier. The picture and the element system come from two roots and were never meant to match. The three water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

What planet rules the Aquarius sign?

Saturn, in all sources from Ptolemy in the second century to William Lilly in 1647. Modern books add Uranus, which was found in 1781. Both are printed today, which is why you see two answers. Saturn is the one that carries the whole written tradition, and Uranus is the one that carries the modern reputation for revolt.

What is an Aquarius like as a person?

Read it from four things rather than a word list. Air gives a mind that works in ideas and language. Fixed gives a view that holds. Saturn gives distance, rule and order. The eleventh house gives friends, groups and causes. Put those side by side and you get someone who thinks in systems, cares about the group, and stays cool at close range. The Sun sits in exile here, so the self is read through the network rather than alone.

What is an Aquarius weakness?

The old scheme names one directly: the Sun is in detriment in Aquarius. The reading is that warmth and self display are the hardest part. Add fixed modality and you get a second one, which is a flat refusal to change a settled view. The cool distance and the stubborn principle are the same trait seen from two sides.

Does every Aquarius have Uranus in Aquarius?

No, and this is the point of the page. Uranus needs 84 years to circle the zodiac and holds one sign for about seven years. Measured over ten full laps of the zodiac, from 1600 to 2437, 9.40 percent of people with an Aquarius Sun have Uranus in Aquarius. That is roughly one in eleven. If you were born between April 1 and June 8, 1995, between January 12, 1996 and March 10, 2003, or between September 14 and December 30, 2003, in New York time, you have it, and so does everyone born in those spans, whatever their sign.

I was born on January 20. Am I a Capricorn or an Aquarius?

It depends on the year and the hour, and the printed table cannot tell you. Across 1940 to 2030, the Sun was still in Capricorn on January 20 in 45 years and had moved into Aquarius in 46. That is as close to a coin toss as the zodiac gets. The only way to settle it is your exact birth time and place run against an ephemeris.

Can an Aquarius have Venus in Leo?

No. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so an Aquarius Sun boxes Venus into five signs: Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius, Sagittarius and Aries. Venus in Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Taurus, Gemini or Cancer cannot happen. The same rule cuts Mercury down to three signs: Aquarius, Capricorn and Pisces.

Who is the best match for an Aquarius?

The old pairing rules point at Gemini and Libra, which share the air element, and at Aries and Sagittarius for pace. Taurus and Scorpio are the hard ones, because all three are fixed signs and none will give ground. Leo sits opposite, which brings pull and friction together. Treat all of that as a starting point, since Venus and Mercury do far more work in a real couple than the Sun does.

When is my Saturn return if I am an Aquarius?

A Saturn return is the moment Saturn comes back to the place it held when you were born. Saturn circles the zodiac in about 29 and a half years, so the first return lands between ages 28 and 30 for everybody. Your Saturn is not always in Aquarius, though. It stood there for only about one Aquarian in ten, so you need your own chart to date it.

Why is my Aquarius friend nothing like the description?

Because the Sun is one piece of furniture in a house with twelve rooms. Their Moon, their Mercury, their Venus and their rising sign are all somewhere else. Their rising sign alone changes every two hours. Two people born the same day at two hours apart read nothing alike, and that is before the slow planets. The Moon in Aquarius is a separate placement from an Aquarius Sun, and the two get mixed up constantly.

Which house does Aquarius rule?

The eleventh, counting from the first. The eleventh room covers friends, groups, networks and the causes a person joins. That is why each hard look at this sign keeps returning to the group rather than the one person. The sign and the room say the same thing twice.
