Here is a fact no other page on Lilith in Aquarius will tell you. If your chart shows it there, there is about one chance in three that a second, equally valid method puts it in the next sign or the one before. I checked every birth hour across 800 years to get that figure. It came out at 36.4 percent, and it barely moves from one decade to the next.
This page gives you three things. First, the exact dates of every stay of Black Moon Lilith in Aquarius from 1947 to 2028, with New York times. Second, the odds that your own Lilith sign depends on the tool you used. Third, an honest account of what this placement is said to mean, and of who first said it.
First, what kind of point this is
Black Moon Lilith is not a planet or a rock. It is the far end of the path the Moon takes round Earth. Astronomers call that far end the apogee. Nothing sits there. It is a mark on the zodiac, not a thing in the sky.
There are two ways to work out where that mark falls. The mean Lilith smooths the path of the Moon into one steady sweep. It moves the same amount each day and never turns back. The true Lilith, also called the osculating Lilith, reads the exact path of the Moon at each second. Osculating means touching: you take the oval the Moon rides at that instant. That figure jumps, stalls, and runs backward.
Our main guide, Black Moon Lilith is an empty point, and there are two of them, sets out both methods in full. It found that the two land in different signs on 36.3 percent of all days from 1950 to 2040. This page asks a narrower question. If the mean Lilith is in Aquarius on your birthday, how likely is it that the true one is not?
Every mean Lilith stay in Aquarius, 1947 to 2028
The mean Lilith takes 8.85 years to go round all twelve signs. So it comes back to Aquarius once every 8.85 years. Each stay lasts 269.3 days, which is just under nine months. The stay is the same length every time, because the mean figure moves at a fixed pace.
Times below are New York time, with daylight saving time applied where it was in force. A birth in Los Angeles on the same instant falls three hours earlier on the clock. The last column is new. It gives the share of each stay during which the true Lilith stood in a different sign.
| Mean Lilith enters Aquarius, New York time | Mean Lilith leaves Aquarius, New York time | Share of the stay with the true Lilith in another sign |
|---|---|---|
| October 26, 1947, at 7:09 a.m. | July 21, 1948, at 3:07 p.m. | 38.2 percent of the stay. |
| August 30, 1956, at 7:51 p.m. | May 27, 1957, at 2:50 a.m. | 41.0 percent of the stay. |
| July 6, 1965, at 7:35 a.m. | April 1, 1966, at 1:34 p.m. | 34.3 percent of the stay. |
| May 11, 1974, at 7:22 p.m. | February 5, 1975, at 1:21 a.m. | 36.6 percent of the stay. |
| March 17, 1983, at 6:10 a.m. | December 11, 1983, at 1:09 p.m. | 37.0 percent of the stay. |
| January 20, 1992, at 6:01 p.m. | October 16, 1992, at 2:00 a.m. | 33.2 percent of the stay. |
| November 25, 2000, at 5:54 a.m. | August 21, 2001, at 1:53 p.m. | 32.3 percent of the stay. |
| September 30, 2009, at 6:49 p.m. | June 27, 2010, at 1:48 a.m. | 39.9 percent of the stay. |
| August 6, 2018, at 6:46 a.m. | May 2, 2019, at 1:45 p.m. | 36.4 percent of the stay. |
| June 11, 2027, at 6:45 p.m. | March 7, 2028, at 12:45 a.m. | 34.6 percent of the stay. |
The next stay starts on June 11, 2027. In universal time, the clock of the Greenwich line, that is 22:45 on the same day. It ends on March 7, 2028. These are the same dates our main guide gives, from the same formula.
One warning about the edges. Chart tools do not all use the same formula for the mean figure. The Swiss Ephemeris, the engine behind many apps, adds a small fix to it. That fix moved these start and end times by as much as 26 hours in my tests. If you were born within a day of a date in this table, check both neighbours.
One birth in three gets a second answer
Now the core figure. I took every hour of every stay in the table above. For each hour, I asked a plain question. Is the true Lilith in Aquarius too, or has it slipped out?
| Where the true Lilith stood while the mean Lilith was in Aquarius | Ten stays, 1947 to 2028 | Ninety one stays, 1602 to 2399 |
|---|---|---|
| True Lilith also in Aquarius, so both tools agree | 63.6 percent of the time. | 63.6 percent of the time. |
| True Lilith back in Capricorn, the sign before | 18.2 percent of the time. | 18.1 percent of the time. |
| True Lilith ahead in Pisces, the sign after | 18.2 percent of the time. | 18.2 percent of the time. |
| True Lilith in any other sign | Not once in any hour. | Not once in any hour. |
So 36.4 percent of the hours in a mean Aquarius stay carry a true Lilith in a next-door sign. The split is fair: half go back to Capricorn and half go on to Pisces. The true figure never strays further than one sign.
Why check 800 years as well as 80? The path of the Moon has slow cycles. A short window can make a result look odd when it is just luck. Here the long window and the short one agree to a tenth of a point. That is the sign of a sound result.
Each single stay swings more. The lowest was 32.3 percent, in 2000 and 2001. The highest was 41.0 percent, in 1956 and 1957. So even in the best stay, close to one birth in three had a second answer.
This fits the figure in our main guide. That page found 36.3 percent across all signs and all days. Mine is 36.4 percent, but it answers a narrower question: only births with the mean Lilith in Aquarius. The two figures are close because the true Lilith wobbles round the mean one in the same way whatever the sign.
The edges of a stay are worst, but the middle is not safe
You might guess that only births near the start or end of a stay are at risk. That is only half right. I split each stay into nine blocks of 30 days and counted again over the full 800 years.
| Block of the stay, counted from the day the mean Lilith enters | Share of hours with the true Lilith in another sign | Which sign it slips into |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 30 | 45.8 percent of hours. | Almost all in Capricorn. |
| Days 31 to 60 | 37.7 percent of hours. | Mostly in Capricorn. |
| Days 61 to 90 | 32.7 percent of hours. | Mostly in Capricorn. |
| Days 91 to 120 | 31.2 percent of hours. | Both signs, Capricorn ahead. |
| Days 121 to 150 | 31.0 percent of hours. | Both signs, near even. |
| Days 151 to 180 | 31.4 percent of hours. | Both signs, Pisces ahead. |
| Days 181 to 210 | 33.1 percent of hours. | Mostly in Pisces. |
| Days 211 to 240 | 38.4 percent of hours. | Mostly in Pisces. |
| Days 241 to the end | 46.4 percent of hours. | Almost all in Pisces. |
Near the start of a stay, close to half of births get a true Lilith still in Capricorn. Near the end, close to half get one that has run on into Pisces. That part is no surprise.
The surprise is the middle. Even at the dead centre of a stay, about 31 percent of births have the true Lilith in another sign. The reason is the size of the wobble. The true figure swings as far as 30 degrees, a whole sign, either side of the mean one. From the centre of Aquarius, a swing of 15 degrees is enough to cross a border.
The same thing works in reverse
Some people see Lilith in Aquarius only because their app uses the true figure. I ran that side too. Over 1600 to 2400, the true Lilith was in Aquarius 8.37 percent of the time. In 36.2 percent of those hours, the mean Lilith sat in Capricorn or Pisces instead.
So the risk runs both ways. A friend with the same birth week as you can read Lilith in Capricorn, while your app says Aquarius. Neither of you is wrong. You are reading two different points that share one name.
How to check your own chart in five minutes
- Find your birth date in the table of stays above. If it falls outside every row, your mean Lilith is not in Aquarius.
- Open your chart tool and look for a setting named mean or true. Note which one it used.
- Run the chart a second time with the other setting.
- If both say Aquarius, you are in the 63.6 percent who get one clear answer.
- If they differ, read both signs. Our pages on Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn and Black Moon Lilith in Pisces cover the two next-door signs.
Most astrologers default to the mean figure, and so does most chart software. That is a habit, not a law. Pick one, say which one you use, and stick with it.
What the old books say about Lilith: nothing
This part matters, and most pages skip it. You will not find Black Moon Lilith in the classic texts of astrology.
Ptolemy did know the far point of the lunar path. In his work on astronomy, the Almagest, he built a model of the Moon with a far point that moves. But in the Tetrabiblos, his book on astrology, he never reads that point in a chart. Vettius Valens, in his Anthologies, does not use it either. Nor does William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, in 1647.
What those books do say is who rules the sign. Ptolemy and Lilly both give Aquarius to Saturn, the planet of limits and of the group that holds its rules. Modern writers add Uranus, found in 1781, as a co-ruler of change and revolt. Both rulers fit the theme below.
The reading of Lilith as a chart point dates from the 1970s and 1980s. Delphine Jay wrote one of the first full guides, Interpreting Lilith, in 1981. Demetra George, in Mysteries of the Dark Moon in 1992, framed Lilith as the part of a person that was shamed and pushed out of sight. The name itself comes from the Alphabet of Ben Sira, a medieval Jewish text. In that tale Lilith is the first wife of Adam, who will not lie beneath him and leaves.
So the link between the myth and the point is modern. That is not a flaw. A reading that is fifty years old has named authors you can check, which is more than many old claims can offer.
The refusal to belong
Within that modern reading, Lilith marks a refusal. It is the part of you that was told to be quiet and will not comply. The sign says what kind of refusal it is. Our main guide sums up this sign in a short phrase: the refusal to belong.
Aquarius is the sign of the group, the friend, the cause, and the future. Our guide to the Aquarius sign covers the sign in its own right. Put Lilith here and the refusal points at the group itself. Here is how astrologers who use this point describe it, in their terms, not as a proven fact.
- A deep dislike of being told what the group thinks, even by a group you chose.
- A pull to stand at the edge of the room, and some pride in being the odd one out.
- Friendships that run on shared ideas more than on shared feelings.
- A cold streak when others ask for closeness on their terms.
- A gift for saying what the whole room knows and nobody says.
The shadow side, in this reading, is exile by choice. The person leaves before they can be pushed out. Then they call the distance freedom. The growth side is to stay in a group while keeping a voice of one’s own.
Saturn, the old ruler, adds a twist worth noting. Saturn builds the rules of a group. Lilith refuses them. So this placement is said to know the rules very well, and to feel them press. The fight is less with bosses than with peers, the circle that says you must fit in.
The house decides where this plays out. The eleventh house is the natural home of groups and friends, so the theme gets louder there. Our page on Black Moon Lilith in the eleventh house covers that case.
If your two tools gave you two signs, read both themes and see which fits your life. The sign before, Capricorn, fights rank from above. The sign after, Pisces, fights being the sponge for everyone else. The contrast is the clearest test you have. For how the twelve signs fit together as a set, see our guide to the zodiac signs.
How I measured this
A number you cannot check is worth nothing. Here is the full method.
The mean Lilith comes from the formula for the mean far point of the lunar path in Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, chapter 47. That formula gives the near point, so I added 180 degrees. Positions are tropical, measured from the equinox of the date. I found each sign border by halving the gap again and again until it was pinned to under a second. Then I turned universal time into New York time with the official time zone rules, daylight saving time included.
The true Lilith came from the Swiss Ephemeris, called from Python with the pyswisseph package. I used its built-in Moshier model of the Moon and its osculating apogee point. I read its sign once per hour for the ten stays from 1947 to 2028. That is about 64,600 readings. For the 91 stays from 1602 to 2399, I read it once every three hours, and once every three hours for the block table.
The second route was built from scratch. I took the position and speed of the Moon from a different library, astronomy-engine, in JavaScript. From those two figures I worked out the exact oval of the lunar path at each hour, then the direction of its far end. On the same ten stays, this route gave 36.4 percent, with 18.2 percent in Capricorn and 18.2 percent in Pisces. The two routes agree to within a tenth of a point on every stay.
I ran three more checks. The start date of June 11, 2027, and the end date of March 7, 2028, match our main guide to within two minutes. Every stay lasts the same 269.3 days, as a smooth figure must. And the shares in each table add to 100 percent.
One limit is worth stating. I treated each hour as equally likely to hold a birth. Real births dip a little on weekends and holidays. That shifts the result by far less than the gap between one stay and the next.
Frequently asked questions
When is Black Moon Lilith in Aquarius next?
The mean Lilith enters Aquarius on June 11, 2027, at 6:45 p.m. New York time. It leaves on March 7, 2028, at 12:45 a.m. New York time.
How long does Lilith stay in Aquarius?
The mean Lilith stays 269.3 days, just under nine months, every time. The true Lilith has no fixed stay, because it swings and turns back.
Why does one site say my Lilith is in Aquarius and another says Capricorn?
One site uses the mean figure and the other the true figure. For births during a mean Aquarius stay, the two disagree 36.4 percent of the time.
Which Lilith should I use?
Most astrologers use the mean one, and it is the default in most software. The true one is closer to the sky at a given second. Choose one and say which one you use.
Is Lilith in Aquarius rare?
No. The mean Lilith spends one twelfth of its time in each sign, about 8.33 percent. The true Lilith was in Aquarius 8.37 percent of the time from 1600 to 2400.
Did ancient astrologers use Lilith in Aquarius?
No. Ptolemy, Vettius Valens, and William Lilly never read the point in a chart. The reading dates from the 1970s and 1980s.
What does Lilith in Aquarius mean?
In the modern reading, it marks a refusal to belong on the terms of the group. It is said to show as a strong streak of dissent among friends and peers.
Find out which Lilith your chart uses
Your Lilith sign depends on your birth date. Its house depends on your birth time and city. An Astrovision natal reading places the point for your exact date, hour, and place, and says which figure it used. You get it as a written guide and as a personal podcast you can take with you.
