There is a question worth asking before any reading of Uranus: how many people share it.
About one person in twelve. Uranus needs 84 years to circle the Sun. It sits in each sign for six to eight years. So your sign here is a birth cohort, not a portrait. It marks the block of years you arrived in.
This guide starts with that block, because it is the thing readers actually want to look up. Then it explains what the planet is held to mean, where that meaning came from, and which part of it is truly yours.
Find your Uranus sign
Each row gives the main stay: the day the planet settled into a sign, and the day it first crossed into the next one. The fourth column lists the short edge stays, when it slipped back and forth across a border. Your Uranus sign is the row where your birthday falls in either place. Dates are in UTC, from the JPL Horizons ephemeris.

Watch the edges. The planet crosses each border two or three times before it stays. It first moved into Gemini on 7 July 2025. It went back to Taurus on 8 November 2025. It settled in Gemini on 26 April 2026. A birth inside a swap like that needs a real chart, not a table.
Counting the edge stays, the shortest total in the table is 6.4 years. The longest is 7.7. That small spread comes from the slight oval of the orbit. It is nothing beside the swings of the planet beyond it.
What does Uranus represent in astrology?
Modern astrologers read Uranus as the planet of sudden change and of the urge to break a pattern. It is the body they point to for the thing that will not stay in its box. The sharp idea. The abrupt exit. The shift no one planned.
They give it rule over Aquarius, and over the eleventh house, the room of friends and groups. A ruler is the planet said to be at home in a sign, its owner by right.
Two nicknames travel with it. The Great Awakener, for the way readings frame its transits as a wake up call. The higher octave of Mercury, because both are linked with the mind, one with everyday thinking and the other with the leap that skips a step.
None of this is old. It is about two hundred years of proposals, and they disagree with each other.
Astrology built its rules before Uranus existed
William Herschel found the planet on 13 March 1781, from a garden in Bath, in England. It was the first world ever added to the list. Until that night the sky held seven moving bodies, and no one looked for an eighth.
Look at what that does to the sources.
Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. It is the book that carried Greek star lore into every later school. Seven bodies. No Uranus, and no gap where one should go.
William Lilly put out Christian Astrology in London in 1647. It is the great English handbook. Hundreds of pages of rules for which planet is strong where, and why. Written 134 years before Herschel looked up. Again, seven bodies.
Their silence is not a slip. It is the most telling fact about Uranus in a chart, and almost no guide says it plainly.
The old system runs on dignity. That is a grid of signs where each planet is strong or weak. Fall and detriment are the weak spots. Exaltation and rule are the strong ones. Uranus has no place on that grid. It was finished long before the planet was known.
So the link between Uranus and Aquarius is a modern rule. It was set in the 1800s and settled in the 1900s. The older school gives Aquarius to Saturn, and many working astrologers still use Saturn there. Demetra George has spent decades on the older texts. She is clear that the two layers answer to two rulebooks. Chris Brennan draws the same line in his history of the craft.
You can use the modern layer. It just helps to know it has a date.
What sixty years of births show
Most claims about how common a chart spot is get repeated rather than checked. We checked.
The method. We looked at everyone born from 1950 to 2010, the people alive today. We stepped through those sixty years at a fixed pace, one reading every 47 minutes, and noted where Uranus stood each time, in the tropical zodiac. We ran it twice, on the Swiss Ephemeris and on the astronomy-engine library. The two give the same shares to the second decimal.
| Uranus sign | Share of charts |
|---|---|
| Aquarius | 12.7 % |
| Capricorn | 12.0 % |
| Sagittarius | 11.4 % |
| Scorpio | 10.9 % |
| Pisces | 10.9 % |
| Virgo | 10.7 % |
| Libra | 10.7 % |
| Leo | 10.7 % |
| Cancer | 10.0 % |
Nine signs, and the shares are almost flat. From 10.0 % to 12.7 %, with no sign standing out.
Compare that with the planet further out. Over the same sixty years, Pluto touched six signs. One of them alone took 24 % of all charts. Uranus spreads its blocks flat, because its orbit is close to a circle and its speed barely shifts.
The flatness is the point. There is no rare Uranus sign among people born in those decades. If a reading tells you yours is rare, the maths says no.
Uranus retrograde is close to a coin toss
Retrograde means a planet looks as if it moves backwards against the stars, seen from Earth. Nothing out there turns round. Earth passes it on the inside of the track. The other body seems to slide back, the way a slow train drifts back from the window of a fast one.
In the same count, Uranus was retrograde at birth 41.2 % of the time.
Two people in five. The planet spends about five months of each year in that backwards drift. So the figure barely moves, whatever years you pick. A birth chart Uranus retrograde marks nothing rare, and a reading that treats it as rare is arguing with a stopwatch.
One more term belongs here. A station is the moment a planet stops and turns. It happens once before the backwards stretch, and once before the planet goes forward again. Uranus stations twice a year. It hangs almost still for weeks around each turn.
Uranus moves into Gemini, with dates
Uranus left Taurus for good on 26 April 2026 and moved into Gemini. Every birth from that day on carries Uranus in Gemini.
The exit is not clean, and this is where printed dates fall out of step. The planet first enters Cancer on 3 August 2032. It backs into Gemini on 12 December 2032. It settles in Cancer on 22 May 2033.
Both dates you will see quoted are right. They answer two questions. The 2032 date is the first crossing. The 2033 date is the last one. Sources that give just one, without saying which, leave a nine month gap hanging.
Here is the run of ingresses ahead. An ingress is the moment a planet crosses from one sign into the next.
| Date | Movement |
|---|---|
| 7 July 2025 | Taurus to Gemini, first crossing |
| 8 Nov 2025 | back to Taurus |
| 26 Apr 2026 | Gemini, for good |
| 3 Aug 2032 | Cancer, first crossing |
| 12 Dec 2032 | back to Gemini |
| 22 May 2033 | Cancer, for good |
For scale, one other outer planet moved around the same time. Neptune settled in Aries on 26 January 2026, for the first time since 1875.
The part of your Uranus that is actually yours
If one person in twelve shares your Uranus sign, what is left that is yours?
Picture the chart as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one part of life: money, home, work, friends. The planets are the furniture. All those born in your seven year block share the same Uranus. What sets you apart is which room it landed in. That turns on the hour and the place you were born.
Uranus in the fourth room, the one linked with home and family, reads nothing like Uranus in the tenth, the room of work and public standing. Same sign. Same block. Not the same life.
House spot turns on birth time. Four minutes of error moves the whole house frame by one degree. An hour can push the planet into the next room. This is why a careful astrologer asks for your time of birth first.
The second private layer is aspects. These are the angles Uranus makes to your Sun, Moon, and the faster planets. A tight angle to one of those is what astrologers point at when they call a chart Uranian.
One fast example is Mars conjunct Uranus, which the sky repeats about every two years, each time in a new degree.
Two people born in the same week, in two cities, can have Uranus in two rooms with two sets of angles. That gap is the whole of what a Uranus reading can honestly make personal.
Uranus in Aquarius, and what a generation really means
Uranus spent 7.6 years in Aquarius in all. The main stay ran from 12 January 1996 to 10 March 2003. Two short stays sit at its edges: 1 April to 9 June 1995, and 15 September to 30 December 2003. It puts Uranus in the sign modern astrology hands to it.
Astrologers read Uranus in Aquarius as the planet on home ground. The readings lean toward networks, tech and group life. It is also the largest block among people born from 1950 to 2010, at 12.7 %.
Which is the warning worth keeping. A shared spot marks a period, not a character. Richard Tarnas made the widest argument of this kind in Cosmos and Psyche, in 2006. He lines up long Uranus and Pluto cycles against world history. Read it as a reading, not as proof. It shows what a generational planet can and cannot claim.
According to this tradition, Uranus marks the moment a settled set up stops fitting. Liz Greene reads it through depth psychology, as the part of a person that refuses the role handed to them. Robert Hand treats its transits as spells when a structure gives way and something unplanned takes its place.
The eleventh house, and why Uranus was put there
Modern astrology links Uranus with the eleventh house, the room of friends, groups and shared causes. The reasoning is simple enough. Aquarius is the eleventh sign counting from Aries, so a planet given Aquarius is handed that room as well.
The older books make no such link. They hand the eleventh house to Jupiter as its joy, a Greek scheme in which each planet has one room where it works with ease. Uranus arrived long after those seats were taken.
Both readings run today. One puts groups and sudden change in the same room. The other keeps Jupiter there and treats Uranus as a guest.
Births from 2026: Uranus in Gemini
The block that opened on 26 April 2026 runs for just over seven years. Anyone born inside it shares Uranus in Gemini with roughly the same share of their age group as any other sign: about one in twelve of all births worldwide.
Gemini is a sign of speech, trade and quick exchange, and Uranus is read as the breaker of settled forms. Astrologers reading that pair write about language, media and the way news travels. None of it says a word about one child in that block rather than another.
The last time the planet held Gemini, it first entered on 7 August 1941 and left for good on 10 June 1949, with short breaks at both edges. The time before, it first entered on 2 June 1858 and left for good on 27 March 1866. Each block is a set of years, and that is all a sign here can be.
Questions readers ask
What sign does Uranus rule?
Modern astrology gives Uranus rule over Aquarius and over the eleventh house. That dates from the 1800s, after Herschel found the planet in 1781. The older school gives Aquarius to Saturn, and that rule is still widely used.
How long does Uranus stay in one sign?
Between 6.4 and 7.7 years in the table above, counting the short edge stays. The full orbit takes 84 years.
Is Uranus retrograde in a birth chart rare?
No. Across births from 1950 to 2010, Uranus was retrograde at birth 41.2 % of the time. Two people in five share it.
What sign is Uranus in now?
Gemini. It settled there on 26 April 2026 and stays until 3 August 2032, when it first crosses into Cancer.
Did ancient astrologers use Uranus?
They could not. Uranus was found on 13 March 1781. Ptolemy in the second century and Lilly in 1647 both worked with seven bodies. Neither gives Uranus a dignity, a rule or a triplicity.
Does my Uranus sign say anything about me personally?
On its own, very little. It is shared by all those born across six to eight years. The room it sits in, and the angles it makes to your own planets, are the parts that change from chart to chart.
