Libra and Aquarius compatibility is one of the most searched sign pairs in the US. Most pages give it a high score and stop there. This page counts instead. I used real US births to find how many times chance puts a Libra with an Aquarius. I measured the angle between their Suns. And I read the old books to see what they say about this pair. The short version: the pair turns up about once in 74 random couples. The trine the books describe holds, within 6 degrees, for only about one pair in three. And in the old system, these are the two signs where the Sun itself is weakest.
Start with what no one can promise
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Sun sign predicts whether a couple will last. The largest test I know of was run by David Voas, a researcher at the University of Manchester, in 2007. He took the 2001 census of England and Wales and looked at the birth dates of 10.3 million married couples. He found no sign pair that married more than chance would allow. The small excess of couples who share a sign came from errors in how the forms were filled in. The Skeptical Inquirer reported his result in March 2008.
Voas printed a cleaned table of 9.5 million couples, his Table 7. It drops the forms with a false first of the month, and it removes the excess of same sign pairs. I read the Libra and Aquarius cells. The census held 127,142 such couples. Chance alone, given how many Libras and Aquarians there were, gave 126,834. The gap is about 300 couples, or two parts in a thousand. That is noise, not a pull.
So this page does not rate the match. It treats the pairing as a lens for reading two people, not a forecast. The lens can still help. It gives two partners words for how each one works, and it shows where they can talk past each other. But the stars do not decide the outcome. The two people do.
The odds that a Libra and an Aquarius meet in the US
A sign is not one twelfth of the year. The Sun moves faster in winter, when Earth is closest to it. So it spends about 29.6 days in Aquarius and about 30.4 days in Libra. US births are not flat through the year either. They peak in late summer and early fall, and they dip in winter.
I took two public files of daily US births. The first holds Social Security counts for 2000 to 2014, about 62.2 million births. The second holds counts from the National Center for Health Statistics for 1994 to 2003, about 39.7 million births. For each day, I found the exact moment the Sun changed sign. When the change fell inside a day, I split that day’s births by the hours on each side.
| Question | Social Security file, 2000 to 2014 | Health Statistics file, 1994 to 2003 |
|---|---|---|
| Share of US births with the Sun in Libra. | 8.52 percent. | 8.51 percent. |
| Share of US births with the Sun in Aquarius. | 7.93 percent. | 7.93 percent. |
| Rank of Libra among the twelve signs. | Fifth of twelve. | Fifth of twelve. |
| Rank of Aquarius among the twelve signs. | Eleventh of twelve. | Tenth of twelve. |
| Chance that two people drawn at random are one Libra and one Aquarius. | 1.35 percent, or 1 pair in 74. | 1.35 percent, or 1 pair in 74. |
If all signs were equal, the pair would turn up once in 72 draws. This one turns up once in 74. The two signs pull in opposite ways. Libra sits at the end of the fall peak in births. Its share of births is about 2 percent above its share of the calendar. Aquarius falls in the winter dip and has a short stay of the Sun. Its share of births is about 2 percent below its share of the calendar. The two effects nearly cancel.
Libra closes the busiest run of signs in US births and Gemini opens it, as our page on Gemini and Libra compatibility shows.
What does 1 in 74 mean in real life? Put 74 random couples in a room. About one of them will be a Libra with an Aquarius, in one order or the other. That is close to the average for any two signs. It is a common pair, not a rare one.
Four signs apart: the trine, and the share of pairs that truly have it
Count along the zodiac from Libra. Scorpio is one step on, then Sagittarius, then Capricorn, then Aquarius. Four signs apart means 120 degrees on the circle, a third of the way around. Astrologers call that angle a trine. They read it as ease. Both signs are air signs, and a trine always joins signs of one element.
That first step has its own story, and our page on Libra and Scorpio compatibility tells how Libra’s stars began as the Scorpion’s claws.
Here is the catch. A sign is a slice 30 degrees wide. A Libra born on the first day of Libra and an Aquarius born on the last day of Aquarius have Suns about 150 degrees apart. A late Libra and an early Aquarius can be only about 90 degrees apart. The label says 120, but the real gap runs anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees.
Most astrologers only count an aspect when the angle is close to exact. An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky. The leeway around the exact angle is called the orb. For a trine, a common modern orb is 6 to 8 degrees. So I asked a plain question. For a Libra and an Aquarius picked at random from US births, what share of pairs have Suns within a given orb of 120 degrees?
| Orb allowed around 120 degrees | Share of Libra and Aquarius pairs with a true trine |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees. | 19 percent of pairs. |
| Within 6 degrees. | 36 percent of pairs. |
| Within 8 degrees. | 46 percent of pairs. |
| Within 10 degrees. | 56 percent of pairs. |
With a 6 degree orb, about one pair in three has a real Sun trine. Even with 8 degrees, fewer than half do. The other pairs share the label, not the angle. About one pair in eight has Suns closer than 105 degrees. About one pair in eight has them wider than 135 degrees.
These shares are the same for any two signs a few steps apart. The width of a sign alone sets them. Our look at Leo and Aquarius couples found the same 46 percent for their opposition.
A true trine needs birthdays about 119 days apart
For the angle to be exact, both Suns must sit at the same degree of their signs. You might expect those birthdays to be a third of a year apart, about 122 days. They are not. From one degree of Libra to the same degree of Aquarius, the Sun takes between 118.5 and 119.3 days. It speeds up as Earth nears the point of its orbit closest to the Sun, in early January.
So take a Libra born about October 8. The Sun then sits near 15 degrees of Libra. An Aquarius born about February 4 has the Sun near 15 degrees of Aquarius. That pair has the exact trine the books describe. A Libra born on September 23 and an Aquarius born on February 17 sit close to 150 degrees apart. A Libra born on October 22 and an Aquarius born on January 21 sit close to 90 degrees. That is a square in size, not a trine. If you want to use the angle, look up both birth dates and find the real degrees.
The other air trine works the same way: our page on Gemini and Aquarius compatibility matches a Valentine’s Day birthday with a Gemini born around June 16.
The two signs where the Sun is weakest
This is the fact about this pair that most guides skip. The old books score each planet by the sign it stands in. A planet is strong in the sign it rules, its home. It is weak in the sign across from its home, a state called detriment. It is also weak in the sign across from its exaltation, its place of honor. That state is called fall.
The Sun rules Leo, and Aquarius sits across from Leo. So the Sun is in detriment in Aquarius. The Sun is exalted in Aries, and Libra sits across from Aries. So the Sun is in fall in Libra. No other sign weakens the Sun. Our Aquarius sign page puts it plainly: only two signs carry that problem.
So Libra and Aquarius is the one pair of signs in which both partners were born with the Sun out of its strength. Of the 66 ways to pair two different signs, no other pair does this.
Why the old books put it there
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. I read it in the Robbins English version of 1940. In Book 1, chapter 19, he gives his reason for the fall. In Libra, the Sun passes into the southern half of the sky. Days grow shorter than nights, and its heat wanes. You can see this in a US sky. In New York, the day lasts about 12 hours 9 minutes when the Sun enters Libra. By the last day of Libra it is down to about 10 hours 47 minutes. An Aquarius is born in the depth of the short days, with about 9 hours 43 minutes of light at the start of the sign.
The same chapter adds a twist. Saturn, Ptolemy says, takes Libra as its exaltation to stand opposite the Sun. He says it holds for their homes too. In chapter 17 he gives Saturn the two signs across from the homes of the Sun and the Moon: Capricorn and Aquarius. So Saturn holds rank in both signs of this pair. It is exalted in Libra, and it rules Aquarius. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, goes further. He calls Aquarius Saturn’s day house and says Saturn joys in that sign.
Put the two facts side by side. In both signs, the Sun is weak and Saturn is strong. The old books cast the Sun as the self that shines on its own. They cast Saturn as limits, rules and the group. That is why the classic picture of both signs leans on fairness, rules and other people more than on the lone self. Our Libra sign page reads the fall as a self that checks with others first.
What it means, and what it does not
A weak Sun is not a weak person. It is a way the old books describe where a person finds their center. In this pair, neither partner is cast as the one who shines alone. One looks for balance with a single partner. The other looks for a place in a group or a cause. In the tradition, that is a common ground, not a flaw. It can make a couple that thinks in terms of “we” and “us” with ease. It can also make a couple where no one wants to take the lead.
What else Ptolemy says about Libra and Aquarius
Ptolemy sorts the signs in several more ways. Here is what each one says about this pair.
Same kind, so a harmonious angle
Ptolemy splits the signs into masculine and feminine, one after the other around the circle. Libra and Aquarius are both masculine. In Book 1, chapter 13, he says the trine and the sextile are in harmony because they join signs of the same kind. So the easy reading of this pair is old. It rests on a rule about kinds of signs, not on a study of couples.
One element, one set of rulers
Ptolemy groups the signs into four triangles. The air triangle holds Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. In chapter 18, he gives it to Saturn by day and to Mercury by night. Modern books call these the element rulers. So a Libra and an Aquarius share both their element and its two rulers. Saturn turns up here a third time.
They do not “see” each other
Ptolemy names two more ties. Some signs command and others obey, when they sit at equal distance from the start of Aries or Libra. Some signs behold each other, when the Sun gives them days of equal length. Libra and Aquarius sit in neither list.
Two readings of the second rule exist, and they give the same answer here. Robbins, in note 83, reads it by whole signs. Then Libra beholds Aries, and Aquarius beholds Sagittarius. Lilly reads it by degrees, and calls the mirror points antiscia. Then Libra mirrors Pisces, and Aquarius mirrors Scorpio. By degrees, the two signs touch at one point only. The last degree of Libra and the last degree of Aquarius get the same daylight, about 10 hours 48 minutes in New York.
Our guide to Sagittarius and Aquarius compatibility gives both readings for a pair that sits one sign either side of Capricorn.
Last, Ptolemy calls some pairs strangers, with no tie at all. Those sit one or five signs apart. This pair sits four apart, so it is not in that list.
Where each partner’s Venus and Mercury can sit
Venus and Mercury orbit closer to the Sun than Earth does. From here, Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, and Mercury never more than about 28. Those limits box in each partner’s chart.
For a Libra Sun, Venus can only be in Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. For an Aquarius Sun, it can only be in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces or Aries. So a Libra can never have Venus in Aquarius, and an Aquarius can never have Venus in Libra. The two can share a Venus sign in one case only: Sagittarius. Our page on Libra and Aquarius Venus placements counted it. Only about one Libra and Aquarius Sun couple in 18 has both Venus signs at home.
Two Libras can share any of five Venus signs, and our page on Libra and Libra compatibility shows how their age gap sets the odds.
Mercury is tighter still. A Libra’s Mercury can only be in Virgo, Libra or Scorpio. An Aquarius’s Mercury can only be in Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces. The two lists never meet. So a Libra and an Aquarius never share a Mercury sign, the placement astrologers read as how a person thinks and talks. For a pair famed for good talk, that is worth knowing. The ease the books promise comes from the shared element, not from a shared style of speech.
How the pair can play out day to day
Here the language turns from counts to tradition. What follows is how astrologers read the two signs. It is a set of images to test against your own life, not a set of facts.
What each partner brings
Libra is a cardinal air sign. Air means ideas, talk and links between people. Cardinal means it starts things. A Libra partner shows care through fairness and grace. They weigh both sides. They notice when a room feels off, and they want to set it right.
Aquarius is a fixed air sign. Fixed means it holds a course once it has one. An Aquarius partner shows care through loyalty and honest views. They want a partner who is a friend first. They care about the group, the cause and the long view.
Where they meet
Both signs like to think a thing through before they feel their way into it. Both value fairness. Both enjoy friends, talk and new ideas. Libra brings warmth and tact to Aquarius’s plain speech. Aquarius brings a firm view to Libra’s search for balance. In the old picture, both carry Saturn’s taste for rules that are fair to all.
Where they rub
Libra starts things and then weighs them. Aquarius sets a view and then holds it. When Libra wants to talk a choice over again, Aquarius can hear doubt. When Aquarius will not budge, Libra can hear a lack of care for the other side.
Closeness is the other sore spot. Libra lives for the pair, the two of us. Aquarius lives for the group, the many of us. Libra can feel left out when Aquarius gives time to friends or a cause. Aquarius can feel hemmed in when Libra wants the couple to come first.
What helps, in the words of the tradition
The trine is read as an open door. Things flow, so the risk is drift, not fights. In plain terms, that means a few simple habits:
- Name out loud what each of you feels, not only what you think.
- Keep one evening a week for the two of you alone.
- Keep room for friends and causes on each side.
- When a choice stalls, let one person decide and the other review.
- Pick one shared cause or project that needs both skills.
These habits are not astrology. They are what helps most couples. The signs only give a name to the pattern.
Look past the Sun
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with ten planets and twelve houses. To read two people well, astrologers compare whole charts. That method is called synastry. It looks at how each planet in one chart meets each planet in the other.
Three placements matter most for love in the traditional view. The Moon shows needs and moods. Venus shows what someone finds lovely and how they give care. Mars shows desire and how someone pushes for what they want.
The small rhythms of home belong to the Moon, and Libra and Aquarius Moon signs covers them. Taste and the way each one gives care belong to Venus, covered in the Venus page linked above.
If a birthday falls near a sign change, check it first. The guide to the 12 zodiac signs has the real Sun dates for each sign. The start of Libra moves between September 22 and 23. The Sun enters Aquarius on January 19, 20 or 21, and leaves it on February 18 or 19.
How I measured this
You can redo each number on this page.
For the Sun sign shares, I used two daily birth files published by FiveThirtyEight. One comes from the Social Security Administration and covers 2000 to 2014. The other comes from the National Center for Health Statistics and covers 1994 to 2003. I found each Sun sign change with astronomy-engine, an open source sky library, in the tropical zodiac. I spread each day’s births evenly over its 24 hours in Chicago time. When the Sun changed sign that day, I split the births by the hours before and after.
For the pair rate, I assumed partners’ birth dates are not linked, which is what Voas found. The chance of one Libra and one Aquarius is then two times the Libra share times the Aquarius share.
For the trine, I took the Sun’s place at each hour of the birth years, weighted by births. I built the spread of Libra Sun degrees and Aquarius Sun degrees, and combined them to get the spread of the gap. Both birth files gave the same shares. As a check, a simple formula that treats degrees as flat gives 19, 36, 46 and 56 percent, within half a point of the table.
For the 119 days, I timed the Sun from each degree of Libra to the same degree of Aquarius, for every year from 1990 to 2030. I did it once with astronomy-engine and once with the short solar formula of Jean Meeus. Both gave the same days to within a hundredth.
For daylight, I used astronomy-engine to find sunrise and sunset in New York in 2025. For Voas, I summed the two Libra and Aquarius cells of his Table 7. The expected count is the product of the row and column totals, over the grand total, for each of the two cells. For the old rules, I read Ptolemy’s Book 1, chapters 13 to 19, in the Robbins version. I checked the rulers of the Sun and Saturn in Lilly’s text.
Frequently asked questions
Are Libra and Aquarius compatible?
Astrology reads the pair as an easy one. The signs sit 120 degrees apart in the same element, and Ptolemy calls that angle harmonious. No study has shown that any sign pair lasts longer. In the 2001 census, Libra and Aquarius couples showed up at the rate chance predicts. Treat the pair as a lens, not a forecast.
How common is a Libra and Aquarius couple?
In US birth data, about 1 random pair in 74 is one Libra and one Aquarius. That is close to the 1 in 72 you would get if every sign were equal.
Is every Libra and Aquarius pair a trine?
By sign, yes. By degree, no. With a 6 degree orb, only about 36 percent of pairs have Suns in a real trine. The rest range from about 90 to 150 degrees apart.
Why is the Sun weak in Libra and Aquarius?
In the old system, the Sun is in fall in Libra, across from Aries, where it is exalted. It is in detriment in Aquarius, across from Leo, its home. These are the only two signs that weaken the Sun. Saturn holds rank in both.
Can a Libra and an Aquarius share a Mercury or Venus sign?
They can never share a Mercury sign. A Libra’s Mercury stays in Virgo, Libra or Scorpio, and an Aquarius’s stays in Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces. They can share a Venus sign in one case only, Sagittarius.
