Libra Moon and Aquarius Moon Compatibility: An Air Trine With Saturn Honored on Both Sides

Libra Moon and Aquarius Moon compatibility is a trine of air, the element of ideas and talk. Two air Moons share a way of feeling: they think a mood through before they show it. The trine is the softest angle the old books name.

One planet runs through this pair more than any other. Saturn rules Aquarius. Saturn is also exalted in Libra, which means it is an honored guest there. And in the old scheme, Saturn is the day ruler of all three air signs. So the host of one Moon holds rank in both signs, while Venus, the host of the other, holds only minor ranks in Aquarius.

This page reads that pattern, the trine, and the numbers behind them. One thing first: astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.

The pair at a glance

Question Short answer.
Distance between the signs Four signs, a trine of 120 degrees.
Elements and modes Both air, cardinal and fixed.
Rulers Venus for Libra, Saturn for Aquarius.
Moon strength No major rank in either sign.
Saturn’s ranks At home in Aquarius, exalted in Libra, day ruler of air.
How common is the pair? About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs.
How close is the trine? Within 8 degrees in 46 percent of couples.

What a Moon sign shows

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you care for the people you love.

Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Libra and Aquarius sit four signs apart, both in the air group. That gap is a trine, an angle of 120 degrees. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.

Saturn in three roles

Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. Venus rules Libra. Saturn rules Aquarius, in the old system used before the outer planets were found. So the Libra Moon lodges with Venus, and the Aquarius Moon lodges with Saturn.

Ptolemy gives Saturn two more ranks that touch this pair. First, he puts Saturn’s exaltation in Libra. His reason was seasonal: in Libra the days grow short and the cold rises, which suits a cold planet. William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, marks the exact point at 21 degrees of Libra.

Second, Ptolemy gives each group of three signs of one element a pair of rulers, called triplicity rulers. For the air signs, the pair is Saturn and Mercury. In the later scheme Lilly follows, Saturn takes the day and Mercury the night. So Saturn has a say over Libra and Aquarius alike.

Venus has a smaller reach. She has no major rank in Aquarius. Lilly gives her only minor ones there, such as the first ten degrees, called a face. So the Aquarius Moon’s host is welcome in both Moons’ signs. The Libra Moon’s host is a guest in the other.

Read as a symbol, Saturn is the common ground. It stands for rules, time, and fairness. Both Moons feel safe when the terms are clear and kept. That shared need for fair terms is the quiet base of this pair.

Two plain guests

Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation. For the Moon, those are Cancer, Taurus, Capricorn, and Scorpio.

Libra and Aquarius are none of them. So neither Moon starts from a hard seat, and neither gets a boost. Lilly gives the Moon a face in each sign: the first ten degrees of Libra and the last ten of Aquarius. Those ranks are minor.

For each sign alone, see our page on the Moon in Libra, then our page on the Moon in Aquarius.

The only air trine that starts and holds

There are three air signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Each one has a mode. Libra is cardinal, so it opens a season: the northern autumn. Aquarius is fixed, so it holds a season steady, in the depth of winter. Gemini is mutable, so it closes a season.

Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only air trine between a cardinal and a fixed sign. The other air trines pair Gemini with Libra, and Gemini with Aquarius. This one joins the sign that starts with the sign that holds.

In practice, the Libra Moon likes to open things: a talk, a plan, a new circle of friends. The Aquarius Moon likes to keep things as they are once they work. One wants to begin. The other wants to stay the course.

What Ptolemy says about the trine

In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy lists four angles between signs: the opposition, the trine, the square, and the sextile. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious, because the two signs share a gender. Fire and air are masculine. Earth and water are feminine. Libra and Aquarius are both air, so they share both gender and element.

He also names two quieter links, and there are two ways to read his list. By degree, as Lilly read it, signs link when they mirror across the solstice or equinox points. Libra mirrors Pisces and Virgo. Aquarius mirrors Scorpio and Taurus. So these two do not mirror, except for a few couples right at a sign border.

By whole signs, as F. E. Robbins lists them in the Loeb edition (notes 80 and 83), Libra beholds Aries and Aquarius beholds Sagittarius. Libra stands outside the command scheme. So there is no link here either. The trine is the whole classical bond.

Is the trine exact?

A trine by sign is not always 120 degrees by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Libra and a Moon at 29 degrees of Aquarius are four signs apart. Yet the real gap is 148 degrees, close to a quincunx, an awkward angle of 150 degrees. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.

Orb allowed Share of couples with a true trine.
Within 3 degrees 19 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 56 percent of couples.

These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, about 3.6 percent of these couples have a square across the sign line instead. For them, the soft angle by sign is a tense one by degree.

Where two air Moons pull apart

A Libra Moon calms down by restoring balance. It weighs both sides, then acts. It shows love through kind words, grace, and time together. Under stress, it smooths things over and feels the hurt later.

An Aquarius Moon calms down by stepping back to think. It shows love through loyal friendship, a sense of justice, and respect for freedom. It dislikes scenes. Under stress, it goes quiet and treats the feeling as a problem to solve.

The trine makes talk easy. Both like ideas, both like fairness, and both dislike drama. The risk is the same habit on both sides. Each one reasons about a feeling instead of saying it. Two cool heads can leave a hurt unspoken for a long time.

  • The Libra Moon says what it wants, not only what is fair.
  • The Aquarius Moon stays close after a hard talk, instead of taking space at once.
  • Both agree that a feeling does not need a reason to be real.
  • Both keep one plan each month that is only for fun.

New moon and full moon births

A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.

Moon sign New moon births, Sun in the same sign Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign.
Libra Moon 8.19 percent, Sun in Libra 8.20 percent, Sun in Aries.
Aquarius Moon 7.97 percent, Sun in Aquarius 8.43 percent, Sun in Leo.

The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle, so the Sun seems to move fastest in early January and slowest in early July. It crosses Aquarius at a fast pace, so an Aquarius Moon has fewer days to meet it. It crosses Leo at a slow pace, so an Aquarius Moon has more days to face it. Libra and Aries sit near the average pace, so the Libra Moon stays level.

In a couple, 15.51 percent include at least one new moon birth. That puts the pair 60th of the 78. And 15.94 percent include at least one full moon birth, which puts it 19th. The lean comes from the Aquarius side alone.

How common is a Libra Moon and Aquarius Moon couple?

The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.

Check the birth time first

The Moon stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. So a birth date alone does not always settle the Moon sign.

Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. An Aquarius Moon born early could be a Capricorn Moon, and one born late could be a Pisces Moon. A Libra Moon could be a Virgo or a Scorpio Moon.

How we measured

We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.

Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.

What the research says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.

So the trine and Saturn’s reach are not a promise. They are symbols. A Libra Moon and an Aquarius Moon both value fairness and a clear head. The symbols show where that shared taste helps, and where one of them has to say the feeling out loud.

Frequently asked questions

Are a Libra Moon and an Aquarius Moon compatible?

Astrology reads them as an air trine, the softest angle Ptolemy names. Both Moons think a feeling through. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.

Why does Saturn matter so much for this pair?

Saturn rules Aquarius, is exalted in Libra, and is the day ruler of the air signs. So the Aquarius Moon’s host holds rank in both signs. Venus has only minor ranks in Aquarius.

Do Libra and Aquarius behold each other in Ptolemy?

No. By degree, their mirror points do not meet. By whole signs, Robbins lists Libra with Aries and Aquarius with Sagittarius. Their link is the trine alone.

How common is a Libra Moon and Aquarius Moon couple?

About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.

Could I be a Libra Moon instead of a Virgo or Scorpio Moon?

Yes, if you were born on a day the Moon changed sign. That happens on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine.
