Cancer and Aquarius Compatibility: Only a Third Form the True Quincunx

Cancer and Aquarius compatibility gets a lot of searches, and most pages answer with a score. We went a different way. We asked what you can check. Is this pair really linked by the angle the books give it? We measured it. Only about one Cancer and Aquarius couple in three forms that angle for real.

Here is why. The books say the two signs sit 150 degrees apart. That holds only on average. A Cancer born in late July and an Aquarius born in late January sit almost face to face. A Cancer born in late June and an Aquarius born in mid February sit closer to 120 degrees.

This guide gives you that count, the odds of meeting, the daylight gap between the two seasons, and a test on ten million marriages. Then it reads the pair the old way, through the Moon and Saturn. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

The quick answer, in six lines

QuestionWhat we found.
How common is the pair?About 1 random US couple in 71.
How far apart are the signs?Five signs, or 150 degrees on average, a link called a quincunx.
How many couples form that angle closely?36 percent within 6 degrees, 19 percent within 3 degrees.
How long are their birthdays in New York?About 14 hours 56 minutes of daylight for Cancer, 10 hours 14 minutes for Aquarius.
Did real marriages favor or avoid them?Neither: a gap of 0.3 percent, inside the noise.
Who rules them? The Moon rules Cancer and Saturn rules Aquarius, and Saturn is in exile in Cancer.

How common is a Cancer and Aquarius couple?

Your Sun sign is the slice of sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Cancer runs from about June 21 to July 22. Aquarius runs from about January 20 to February 18. The exact hour moves a bit from year to year. Our zodiac signs guide checks each date against the real sky.

The signs are not the same size in the birth count. We use one reference for all our pair pages. It is 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014, counted by date. In that count, 8.84 percent of babies are Cancer. Only 7.93 percent are Aquarius.

Now pair two people at random. A couple can be a Cancer woman with an Aquarius man, or the reverse. Both count. So the chance is two times 8.84 percent times 7.93 percent. That gives 1.40 percent, or about 1 couple in 71.

Pair of signsChance for a random US couple.
Leo and Virgo, the most common mixed pairAbout 1 in 62.
Cancer and AquariusAbout 1 in 71.
What an even split would give1 in 72.
Capricorn and Aquarius, the rarest mixed pairAbout 1 in 83.

So this pair lands right in the middle, 30th of the 66 mixed pairs. The reason is neat. A big sign meets a small one, and the two sizes cancel out.

Why is Cancer big? The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July. So the Sun seems to crawl, and Cancer season lasts 31.451 days, the longest of the year. The Cancer sign guide has the full ranking. Summer is also a busy time for US births.

Why is Aquarius small? The Earth is nearest the Sun in early January. So the Sun moves fast, and Aquarius lasts only 29.592 days. The Aquarius sign guide ranks it third from the shortest. Late winter is a quiet time for US births, too.

Five signs apart, but not always 150 degrees

Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count from Cancer to Aquarius the short way round. You pass Capricorn, Sagittarius, Scorpio and Libra. That is five steps. Five signs of 30 degrees make 150 degrees.

An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky. The 150 degree angle is called a quincunx, Latin for five twelfths. Some books call it an inconjunct, which means not joined.

Here is the catch. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So the real gap between two Suns can be anything from 120 to 180 degrees. Sign pages say quincunx for all of them. A chart reader would not. Astrologers call a real aspect only when the angle is close. The room they allow is called the orb. For a quincunx, most use 2 to 6 degrees.

So we measured the real gap for every pair of birth days. For each date from 2000 to 2014, we placed the Sun every hour and weighted each hour by the births that day. Then we paired every Cancer hour with every Aquarius hour.

How close to 150 degreesShare of Cancer and Aquarius couples.
Within 1 degree6.6 percent of them.
Within 3 degrees19.1 percent of them.
Within 6 degrees36.1 percent of them.
Within 8 degrees46.3 percent of them.
More than 6 degrees off63.9 percent of them.

With a 6 degree orb, about 36 couples in 100 have a true quincunx. The other 64 have no close link between the two Suns at all. With a strict 3 degree orb, fewer than one in five do.

Some couples even form a different aspect. About 2 in 100 sit within 6 degrees of 180, which is an opposition. About 2 in 100 more sit within 6 degrees of 120, which is a trine. Astrologers call these out of sign aspects, because the angle does not match the signs.

Example couple, both born around noonReal gap between the Suns.
Cancer born July 6, 2000, and Aquarius born February 4, 2002149.2 degrees, a true quincunx.
Cancer born July 21, 2000, and Aquarius born January 21, 2002177.7 degrees, close to an opposition.
Cancer born June 22, 2000, and Aquarius born February 17, 2002122.7 degrees, close to a trine.

Why does it matter? Every pair of signs five apart has the same spread. The shape of a sign wheel makes it so. But the sign pages never say it. If you want to know your own angle, the birth dates settle it in a minute.

Summer’s longest days meet winter’s short ones

Cancer season opens on the longest day of the year in the north. Aquarius season sits in the dark heart of winter. We measured the gap in daylight, from sunrise to sunset.

CityAverage daylight on a Cancer birthdayAverage daylight on an Aquarius birthdayGap between them.
Seattle15 hours 46 minutes9 hours 42 minutesAbout 6 hours 4 minutes.
New York14 hours 56 minutes10 hours 14 minutesAbout 4 hours 42 minutes.
Miami13 hours 40 minutes11 hours 3 minutesAbout 2 hours 36 minutes.

In New York, the shortest Cancer day still beats the longest Aquarius day by nearly 4 hours. The farther north you go, the wider the gap.

This is not trivia. It is the very test that Ptolemy used to link signs. Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. It is one of the founding books of Western astrology. In Book 1 he gives two links based on daylight.

Signs that “behold” each other give days of the same length when the Sun is in them. Signs that “command” and “obey” rise in the same span of time. The notes of Frank Robbins, who translated the book, list every pair. Aquarius beholds Sagittarius and obeys Gemini. Cancer commands Capricorn.

And Cancer beholds no one. Robbins notes that Cancer and Capricorn are “left without mates”, since they sit on the turning points of the year. So Cancer and Aquarius share neither link. In Ptolemy’s scheme, they are “disjunct”, with none of the ties he lists. Our page on Leo and Pisces compatibility covers what he meant by signs that do not see each other. The same rule applies here.

Virgo and Aquarius are disjunct in the same way, and our page on Virgo and Aquarius compatibility shows how their Mercury signs still meet.

Gemini and Capricorn sit five signs apart as well, and our page on Gemini and Capricorn compatibility adds Lilly’s contra-antiscion to the same test.

What Ptolemy did give them: the Moon’s half of the sky

There is one tie, and it is easy to miss. It sits in the chapter on the homes of the planets.

In the old books, each sign has a ruler, a planet that owns it the way a host owns a house. Ptolemy starts with the two lights. He gives Leo to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon, as the signs nearest our zenith, the point straight overhead, and the warmest.

Then he cuts the wheel in two. The half from Leo to Capricorn is the Sun’s. The half from Aquarius to Cancer is the Moon’s. Look at the ends of that second half. It starts with Aquarius and ends with Cancer.

So the two signs of this pair are the two bookends of the Moon’s half of the sky. Within that half, the Moon holds Cancer. Saturn holds Aquarius, the sign opposite the Sun’s Leo.

Ptolemy explains why Saturn gets it. Saturn is cold, and it is the planet farthest from the lights. So he gives it the signs opposite the lights’ homes, which are “cold and wintry”. Capricorn faces Cancer. Aquarius faces Leo.

Put plainly, Ptolemy built the wheel so that Cancer is the Moon’s warm home and Aquarius is Saturn’s cold one. He meant them to feel like summer and winter. Our daylight table shows how literal that is.

The Moon and Saturn: a host, and a guest in exile

A reading of this pair turns on its two rulers. William Lilly, the English astrologer, lists their strengths in Christian Astrology, from 1647. He calls a planet’s standing in a sign its dignity.

RulerIts own signIts standing in the partner’s sign.
The Moon, ruler of CancerCancer, its only homeIn Aquarius, no rank at all, neither strong nor weak.
Saturn, ruler of AquariusCapricorn and AquariusIn Cancer, detriment, also called exile.

Detriment means a planet sits in the sign across from its own home. The old books read it as a planet out of place, forced to work against its grain. Saturn is in detriment in Cancer because Cancer faces Capricorn, one of Saturn’s homes. Our page on Saturn in Cancer dates every visit and shows it is Saturn’s shortest sign.

The picture is lopsided, and that is its charm. The Moon can walk into Aquarius as a plain visitor. Saturn walks into Cancer as a guest who does not fit the room.

What do the two rulers stand for? The Moon is the body of need, mood, food and home. Saturn is the planet of limits, time and rules. Liz Greene wrote a whole book on Saturn in 1976. She read it as the place where we build walls, and then learn to use them well.

So the old reading of this pair is a Moon that wants closeness and a Saturn that wants a frame. Neither is wrong. They just start from opposite ends of the same half circle.

What ten million marriages showed

A birth count tells you how common the pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. For that, the best test we know is a British one.

In 2007, the sociologist David Voas looked at every married couple in England and Wales in the 2001 census. That was 10.3 million couples, with both birth dates. He asked one plain thing. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance says, and others less?

His raw table showed too many same sign couples. He traced it to errors. Some forms had the same birthday typed in for both spouses. Others had a missing date filled in as the 1st of the month. He removed the couples with a birthday on the 1st. Then he took out the excess of same sign pairs. We read the Cancer and Aquarius cells in both versions.

Version of the census tableCouples foundExpected by chanceGap.
Raw count, Table 1144,799 couples145,659 couples0.6 percent fewer.
After his fixes, Table 7133,781 couples134,212 couples0.3 percent fewer.

The raw gap shrinks by half once the errors go. The extra same sign couples had been pulling every other cell down a little.

What is left is noise. Voas says a single cell can drift up to 450 couples from its expected count by chance alone. The Cancer husband with Aquarius wife cell is 244 short. The reverse is 188 short. Both sit well inside that band. His verdict for all 144 cells was the same: signs have no effect on who marries whom.

So what is left for astrology to offer? Not a verdict. It offers a set of symbols, a way to talk about two styles of care. The rest of this page uses it that way.

Water meets air in daily life

These are sign portraits, not facts about any person you know.

Cancer is a cardinal water sign. Cardinal means it starts a season, so it likes to begin things. Water, in the sign books, stands for feeling. Cancer shows love by feeding, keeping and remembering. The birthday dinner, the saved card, the room kept warm.

Aquarius is a fixed air sign. Fixed means it sits mid season, so it likes to hold a course. Air, in the sign books, stands for thought and contact. Aquarius shows love by being loyal to a shared idea, and by giving the other person room to be odd.

Put them together and you get a pair that can build a home with an open door. Cancer makes the home. Aquarius fills it with friends, causes and new plans. Sign books like to cast them as the keeper and the reformer.

Where the friction shows up

With no shared element and no shared mode, the snags are about signals, not values. Here are four common ones from the sign books, with a small step for each.

Where it snagsWhat Cancer feelsWhat Aquarius feelsA small step that helps.
Family daysHurt when a holiday is skippedTied down by fixed ritualsKeep two rituals sacred and let the rest change.
FriendsLeft out when the group comes firstBoxed in when the group is cutBook one night for two before the group night.
MoodUnseen when feelings get a lectureLost when feelings come with no wordsName the feeling first, then talk it through.
After a fightNeeds a hug before the talkNeeds the talk before the hugAgree on the order once, while calm.

None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with different styles can use them. That is the honest point. The sign gives a name to a pattern, and the fix lives in plain talk.

Two people can share a temperament and still court on opposite terms, the gap examined in Cancer and Aquarius Venus placements. In that configuration, a hundred and fifty degrees links placements that never overlap.

The rest of the chart counts for more

A Sun sign is one point in a chart with at least ten. Comparing two full charts is called synastry. Three points matter most for love.

The Moon shows what makes a person feel safe. The Venus sign shows what they find lovely. Mars shows how they chase what they want, and how they argue. For this pair, add a fourth. Look at where Saturn sits in each chart, and what it touches in the other.

So a Cancer Sun can have an Aquarius Moon. An Aquarius Sun can have a Cancer Venus. Each of those says more than the Sun pair does. And as our measure shows, the Sun pair itself forms a close angle in only about a third of couples.

If you know both birth dates and times, the full comparison is where the detail lives. If you only know the Sun signs, treat this page as a starting map, not the ground.

How we measured

Birth shares come from US births by date, 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million in all. The data come from the Social Security Administration, as compiled by FiveThirtyEight. We checked them against the 1994 to 1999 file of the National Center for Health Statistics. Cancer came out at 8.90 percent and Aquarius at 7.94 percent there, close to the main figures.

For the angle, we used two routes. Route one placed the Sun every hour with the astronomy-engine code library, for every hour of every Cancer and Aquarius day. Route two used the short solar formula from Jean Meeus, in his book Astronomical Algorithms. Both routes gave the same shares to the first decimal: 36.1 percent within 6 degrees. Each day’s births were spread evenly over its 24 hours, in US Central time. The older birth file gave 36.0 percent.

For daylight, route one searched each sunrise and sunset from 2000 to 2014. Route two used the Sun’s height formula, with the usual allowance for the bending of light by air. The two routes agreed within a few seconds.

The marriage counts come from Tables 1 and 7 of the Voas paper, which reproduce census tables for England and Wales, 2001. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total.

The limits are real. Birth shares are not the same as shares of adults who date. People move, and many couples meet across borders. Treat the US figures as a close guide, not a census of couples.

Questions people ask

Are Cancer and Aquarius compatible?

No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. In ten million marriages in England and Wales, Cancer and Aquarius couples came in at the rate chance predicts. As a symbol, the pair joins water and air, and the Moon with Saturn.

Is Cancer and Aquarius a quincunx?

By sign, yes: five signs apart, or 150 degrees on average. By real angle, only about 36 percent of couples fall within 6 degrees of 150. About 2 percent sit near an opposition, and about 2 percent near a trine.

How rare is a Cancer and Aquarius couple?

About 1 random US couple in 71, based on 62.2 million US births. That is almost exactly what an even split of signs would give.

Why is Saturn weak in Cancer?

Cancer sits across from Capricorn, one of Saturn’s homes. The old books call a planet in the sign opposite its home in detriment, or exile. Lilly lists Saturn in detriment in Cancer and Leo.

What do Cancer and Aquarius have in common?

In Ptolemy’s scheme, both belong to the Moon’s half of the zodiac, which runs from Aquarius to Cancer. They are its two ends.

Do I need a full chart to judge this match?

For any real detail, yes. The Moon, Venus, Mars and Saturn of both partners say more about daily life than the Sun pair alone.
