Taurus and Aquarius Compatibility: The Rulers Meet in 1 Couple in 9

Taurus and Aquarius compatibility is a classic puzzle. One sign is earth and loves what it can touch. The other is air and lives in ideas. On the zodiac wheel they sit three signs apart, the angle astrologers call a square. So most guides call the pair hard work and stop there.

We went further and counted. About 1 random US couple in 76 is a Taurus and an Aquarius. We checked what the old books say about this pair. And we found a quiet tie between the two ruling planets, Venus and Saturn. In about 1 couple in 9, each partner is born in a slice of sky that the other partner’s planet rules.

This guide shows each step, so you can check it. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.

The short answer, in six lines

QuestionWhat we found.
How common is a Taurus and Aquarius couple?About 1 random US couple in 76, or 1.32 percent.
Where does it rank among the 78 pairs?50th, in the lower half.
Did real marriages favor or avoid the pair?Neither: they sat 0.3 percent under chance.
How far apart are the signs?Three signs, or 90 degrees, a link called a square.
How many pairs form a close square?About 1 pair in 3, with a 6 degree leeway.
What ties the two rulers? Each one rules a ten degree slice of the other’s sign.

How many couples are Taurus and Aquarius?

Your Sun sign is the slice of sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Taurus season runs from about April 20 to May 20. Aquarius season runs from about January 20 to February 18. The exact hour moves a bit each year. Our zodiac signs guide checks each border date against the real sky.

The twelve signs do not get the same share of births. Two things set the count. The first is how long the Sun stays in each sign. The second is how many babies are born per day in that part of the year.

Aquarius loses on both. The Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, so the Sun moves fastest then. Aquarius season lasts about 29.6 days, one of the shortest. And US births are low in winter. Taurus sits near the middle. Its season lasts about 31 days, but spring births are only average.

Source of the birthsShare born TaurusShare born AquariusChance a random couple is Taurus and Aquarius.
US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million, by exact date8.29 percent7.93 percent1.32 percent, or 1 in 76.
US births 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million, by exact date8.36 percent7.93 percent1.33 percent, or 1 in 75.
If all twelve signs were equal8.33 percent8.33 percent1.39 percent, or 1 in 72.

Why times two? A couple can be a Taurus woman with an Aquarius man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Taurus share times the Aquarius share.

There are 78 ways to pair the twelve signs. Twelve pairs join a sign with itself. The other 66 join two different signs. Taurus and Aquarius come 50th of 78. The most common pair, Leo and Virgo, is 1 couple in 62. So a Taurus and Aquarius couple is a bit less common than an even split would give. That is a fact about the calendar, not about love.

What ten million marriages showed

A birth count tells you how common a pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. The best test we know of comes from Britain.

In 2007, the sociologist David Voas looked at every married couple in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a plain question. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict? Do others marry less?

His answer was no. The one clear excess was couples of the same sign. He traced it to form errors, such as one birthday typed in for both partners. Once he took those out, the table matched chance. His paper is called “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer printed a version in March 2008.

We pulled the Taurus and Aquarius cells from his cleaned table, Table 7. The expected count is what you get if people chose partners with no regard to sign.

Couples in the 2001 censusFoundExpected by chanceGap.
Taurus husband, Aquarius wife70,387 couples70,394 couplesAlmost exactly chance.
Aquarius husband, Taurus wife69,823 couples70,210 couples0.6 percent fewer.
Both ways together140,210 couples140,604 couples0.3 percent fewer, about 390 couples.

So the square did not keep these two apart. The gap is about 390 couples out of 140,000. A single cell in a table this size can drift by a few hundred couples through chance alone. The fair reading is simple. Taurus and Aquarius marry each other at the rate the calendar brings them together.

Three signs apart: how close is the square?

Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count from Aquarius to Taurus and you pass Pisces and Aries. That makes three steps, or 90 degrees. Astrologers call a 90 degree link a square. An aspect is an angle between two points in a chart that astrologers read as a link. The square is the one they read as friction.

Ptolemy, the Greek writer of the Tetrabiblos, gives a reason. He wrote around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 13, he notes that the signs switch between masculine and feminine all the way round. Signs three apart always have opposite kinds. So he calls the square out of tune. Taurus is a feminine sign in his scheme and Aquarius a masculine one.

But a square by sign is not always a square by degree. A Taurus Sun can sit anywhere from 0 to 30 degrees of Taurus. The same goes for an Aquarius Sun. So the true angle between two such Suns runs from about 60 to about 120 degrees. The leeway astrologers allow around an exact angle is called the orb.

So we measured it. We took the Sun’s place for every hour of both seasons, weighted by real US births. Then we paired every Taurus with every Aquarius.

How close the two Suns are to 90 degreesShare of Taurus and Aquarius pairs.
Within 3 degrees19 percent, about 1 pair in 5.
Within 6 degrees36 percent, about 1 pair in 3.
Within 8 degrees46 percent, just under half.
Within 10 degrees56 percent, just over half.

This is the same result we found for other squares, such as our page on Leo and Scorpio compatibility. It comes from geometry, not from these two signs.

There is a rule of thumb. The Sun moves about one degree a day. So the square is close when both partners were born about the same number of days into their sign. An Aquarius born on January 25 and a Taurus born on April 25 fit well. An Aquarius born in early February and a Taurus born in mid May do not.

Two fixed signs, earth and air

The old books sort each sign three ways. Here is how Taurus and Aquarius line up.

Trait on the usual listsTaurusAquarius.
ElementEarth, cold and dry in the old theoryAir, hot and moist in the old theory.
ModeFixed, a sign that holdsFixed, a sign that holds.
Kind in PtolemyFeminine, of the nightMasculine, of the day.
RulerVenusSaturn in the old books, Uranus added in modern ones.
Season in the USLate springDeep winter.

Fixed is the one thing they share. The fixed signs fall in the middle of each season. Taurus is full spring and Aquarius is the heart of winter. The old books read the fixed signs as steady. They hold a course once it is set. Two fixed signs in a square is the classic picture of two people who both mean it.

The elements pull the other way. In the old theory, earth is cold and dry, and air is hot and moist. They share no quality at all. Stephen Arroyo, in his book on the four elements, reads earth as the urge to make things real and air as the urge to link ideas. That is a useful lens for this pair. One partner asks “does it work?” and the other asks “what does it mean?”

Aquarius has two rulers today. Saturn is the old one. Uranus was found in 1781 and added later. Our Aquarius sign guide covers both. This page uses Saturn, since it carries the whole written tradition.

Venus and Saturn: each ruler holds a slice of the other sign

Here is the tie most guides miss. In the old books, a planet can have a claim on a sign even when it does not rule it. The smallest of these claims is called a face. A face is a ten degree slice of a sign, so each sign has three. Each slice is given to one planet, in a fixed order that runs through the whole zodiac.

William Lilly prints the full list in his table of dignities, in Christian Astrology, from 1647. Two lines of that table matter here.

SignFaces, from first to lastThe slice held by the partner’s ruler.
TaurusMercury, then the Moon, then SaturnThe last ten degrees belong to Saturn, ruler of Aquarius.
AquariusVenus, then Mercury, then the MoonThe first ten degrees belong to Venus, ruler of Taurus.

So Saturn has a foothold at the end of Taurus. And Venus has a foothold at the start of Aquarius. In birthdays, that means a Taurus born from about May 10 to May 20. For Aquarius, it means someone born from about January 20 to January 29. These dates are for New York time and shift by a day in some years.

Lilly’s table adds a second, smaller link. Each sign is also cut into five uneven pieces called terms. In Taurus, Saturn holds the stretch from 22 to 26 degrees. In Aquarius, Venus holds the stretch from 12 to 20 degrees. Every one of those Saturn degrees sits inside Saturn’s face, so the face is the claim that counts.

Now the count. We took the Sun’s degree for every hour of both seasons and weighted each hour by real US births.

What we counted, US births 2000 to 2014Share.
Taurus Suns in Saturn’s face, 20 to 30 degrees of Taurus33.7 percent of Taurus births.
Aquarius Suns in Venus’s face, 0 to 10 degrees of Aquarius32.9 percent of Aquarius births.
Couples where both are true11.1 percent, or 1 couple in 9.
Couples where at least one is true55.5 percent, just over half.

So in 1 Taurus and Aquarius couple in 9, each Sun sits in a slice ruled by the other partner’s planet. In just over half the couples, at least one Sun does. The older birth file, from 1994 to 2003, gives the same figures to the first decimal.

Be clear about what this is. It is almost exactly what an even spread would give, one third times one third. Nothing makes these couples rare or chosen. The count simply tells you how many couples carry the tie.

How much weight did the old writers give a face? Very little. Lilly calls it the least of all the dignities. He says a planet in its own face is like “a man ready to be turned out of doors, having much to do to maintain himself in credit and reputation.” So read the face as a small open door between the two rulers. It is not a bond.

The door that stays shut

There is one tie this pair can never have. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. For an Aquarius Sun, that boxes Venus into five signs: Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces and Aries. Taurus is not on the list. So no Aquarius is ever born with Venus in Taurus, the sign Venus rules.

The Taurus side is different. About 24.35 percent of Taurus natives have Venus in Taurus, their ruler at home. Our Taurus sign guide gives that count over the years 1600 to 2400. For how the two Venus signs mix, see our page on Venus sign compatibility for Taurus and Aquarius. A 90 degree gap between the Suns says little about how each partner likes to be loved.

One more link runs through a third sign. Saturn is exalted in Libra, the other sign Venus rules. Ptolemy gives this in Book 1, chapter 19. So Saturn is honored in a home of Venus. Our page on Libra and Capricorn compatibility follows that thread through the other Venus and Saturn square.

What Ptolemy said about Taurus and Aquarius

In Book 1, chapters 13 to 16, Ptolemy lists the ways two signs can be tied. Many web pages get these wrong, so we read them in the Robbins translation.

Do they command and obey?

Ptolemy says signs the same distance from an equinox sign “command” and “obey.” His reason is that they rise in equal times. Here is the catch. Measured in degrees from the spring equinox point, Taurus and Aquarius are mirror twins. Taurus runs from 30 to 60 degrees past it. Aquarius runs from 30 to 60 degrees before it.

So we timed how long each sign takes to cross the eastern horizon.

PlaceTime for Taurus to riseTime for Aquarius to rise.
MiamiAbout 101 minutesAbout 101 minutes.
New YorkAbout 86 minutesAbout 86 minutes.
SeattleAbout 76 minutesAbout 76 minutes.

The match holds at every latitude. Both are fast risers in the US, far quicker than the two hours you would get from an even split. By Ptolemy’s own reason, Taurus commands and Aquarius obeys. Taurus gets the upper role because it sits in the half of the year with long days.

The editor saw it another way. A note in the Robbins edition pairs whole signs by counting from Aries. That puts Taurus with Pisces and Aquarius with Gemini. So the answer depends on the reading. By degrees, the pair is tied. By whole signs, it is not. Command and obey is a label for the sky, not a rule for who leads at home.

Our page on Taurus and Pisces compatibility looks at that whole sign pairing through Venus, the planet both signs share.

Do they “behold” each other?

No, in either reading. Signs that behold each other have days of the same length. The Robbins notes list Taurus with Virgo and Aquarius with Sagittarius. Read by degrees, as Lilly does, Taurus mirrors Leo and Aquarius mirrors Scorpio. A Taurus day in New York lasts about 14 hours. An Aquarius day lasts about 10.

What the square can look like day to day

Here is how astrologers read the pair. These are symbols, not a forecast.

Both signs are fixed, so both partners can dig in. The Taurus side is read as loyal to what is proven: a home, a routine, a way of doing things. The Aquarius side is read as loyal to a principle, a group or an idea. A clash between them is rarely loud. It looks more like two people who each wait for the other to give way.

The gift of the pair is the same trait. Two fixed signs keep promises. Taurus gives the idea a body. Aquarius gives the routine a reason. Modern writers read the square as a push to act, and that fits here. The friction is where the work of the couple happens.

Some plain habits help any couple with this mix. Say changes out loud and early. Leave room for time with friends. Keep the small rituals, like a meal together, that make a home feel safe. None of this needs the stars. It is just good sense for two steady people who see the world in different ways.

The rest of the chart counts for more

A Sun sign is one point out of many. The Moon moves through a whole sign in about two and a half days. Venus and Mars shift every few weeks. The rising sign changes about every two hours. Two people with the same Sun signs can have very different charts.

So a Taurus and an Aquarius can share a Moon sign, or a rising sign. Their Venus signs can even match, but only in Pisces or Aries, the two signs both lists share. Each of those links can soften or sharpen the square. A full chart for each partner, with birth time and place, says far more than two Sun signs.

How we measured

For the share of births, we used the daily US birth counts from the Social Security Administration for 2000 to 2014. That is 62.2 million births, published by FiveThirtyEight. We checked it against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003. Each day was split by the exact hour the Sun crossed into a new sign, in Central time.

For the faces and the square, we worked out the Sun’s place for every hour from 1994 to 2014 with the astronomy engine library. Each hour got an equal share of that day’s births. Then we added up the shares by degree.

We checked the face count a second way. We used a separate formula for the Sun, from Jean Meeus, with ten minute steps and a fixed clock offset. Both routes gave 11.1 percent for the couples, to the first decimal. The rising times come from the standard formula for oblique ascension, with the tilt of the Earth’s axis set to 23.44 degrees.

The census counts are from Table 7 of the Voas paper. Ptolemy is quoted from the Robbins translation, Book 1, chapters 13 to 19. Lilly’s faces and terms come from his table of essential dignities.

Questions people ask

Are Taurus and Aquarius compatible?

No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Taurus and Aquarius couples 0.3 percent under chance, well inside normal drift. As a symbol, the pair joins two fixed signs, earth and air, in a square.

What percentage of couples are Taurus and Aquarius?

About 1.32 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 76. That is based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. It ranks 50th of the 78 sign pairs.

Why is Taurus and Aquarius called a square?

The two signs sit three signs, or 90 degrees, apart on the zodiac wheel. By degree, the two Suns form a close square in about 1 couple in 3, using a 6 degree leeway.

How are Venus and Saturn linked in this pair?

In Lilly’s table of faces, Saturn rules the last ten degrees of Taurus and Venus rules the first ten degrees of Aquarius. About 1 US Taurus and Aquarius couple in 9 has both Suns in those slices. Lilly counts a face as the weakest of the old dignities.

Can an Aquarius have Venus in Taurus?

No. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so an Aquarius Sun keeps Venus in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces or Aries. A Taurus can share a Venus sign with an Aquarius only in Pisces or Aries.
