Taurus Venus and Aquarius Venus Compatibility: A Square Ptolemy Softened by Degree, Not by Sign

Taurus Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility begins with a square, the angle the old books call a clash. Yet one reading of Ptolemy gives this square a softer role. By exact degree, Taurus and Aquarius mirror each other across the start of the zodiac. Read that way, his rule makes Taurus the sign that commands and Aquarius the sign that obeys, and the mirror holds within 3 degrees for 19 percent of these couples, about one in five. Read by whole sign, the tie does not apply. We measured every hour from 1600 to 2400 to find that out.

This guide shows how common each Venus is, which Sun signs come with it, and how the tradition ranks Venus in each sign. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Venus sign predicts how a couple does.

The pair in plain words

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of love: what draws you, what you value and how you show care. It is not the Sun sign you read in a horoscope. This page is about two people, one with Venus in Taurus and one with Venus in Aquarius.

Taurus is the second sign and Aquarius the eleventh. Count the short way round and you get three signs, or 90 degrees. That angle is a square. Taurus is an earth sign, the element of the body, money and things you can touch. Aquarius is an air sign, the element of ideas, words and groups.

Both are fixed signs. A fixed sign sits in the middle of a season: Taurus in spring, Aquarius in winter. Fixed signs hold on and do not like to be moved. Two of them at right angles make a firm, slow push. Among all 78 Venus pairs, no other one is a square between a fixed earth sign and a fixed air sign.

What the evidence says first

A fair warning comes before any chart talk. The largest test of zodiac love signs came from the sociologist David Voas. His 2007 paper, Ten Million Marriages, used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He compared the birth dates of more than ten million married couples. No Sun-sign pair married more or less than chance would give. The few odd peaks came from errors in the data.

Voas tested Sun signs only. No one has run a test like that for Venus signs, as far as we know. So what follows gives two people words for how they love. It cannot tell them whether they will last.

How common each Venus is

Venus is a fast planet. It crosses a sign in about four weeks. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for some six weeks, a phase called a retrograde. That loop makes Venus stay longer in some signs than in others.

Venus repeats its path in an eight-year cycle, so a short window can skew the count. To smooth out those loops, we used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of all time, 1600 to 2400 Rank out of twelve.
Venus in Taurus 8.59 percent Second of the twelve.
Venus in Aquarius 8.16 percent Tenth of the twelve.
Most common: Venus in Cancer 8.62 percent First of the twelve.
Least common: Venus in Capricorn 8.04 percent Last of the twelve.

The spread is small. Neither Venus here is rare, and both sit close to one in twelve.

Now pick two people at random. What are the odds that one has Venus in Taurus and the other Venus in Aquarius? The pair can form two ways, so you double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.40 percent, or one couple in 71. That ranks 26th of the 78 pairs.

The square Ptolemy softened

In Book I, chapter 13 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy calls the square a clashing aspect. It joins signs of unlike kind. Here that means earth and air, and a feminine sign with a masculine one.

Chapter 14 adds a second layer. Picture the zodiac with a line through 0 degrees of Aries, the spring point. Signs at equal distance from that line are paired. Ptolemy says they rise in equal spans of time. He calls the sign on the summer side the one that commands, and the sign on the winter side the one that obeys. Taurus runs from 30 to 60 degrees after the spring point. Aquarius runs from 30 to 60 degrees before it. So, counted by degree, Taurus commands and Aquarius obeys.

Counted by degree, only two squares in the zodiac carry this tie: Taurus with Aquarius, and Leo with Scorpio. Every other square is a plain clash in his scheme. That makes this pair’s square a ranked one, with a leader and a follower, not two equals pushing.

By whole sign or by degree: two readings

Readers of Ptolemy do not agree on how strict the rule is. Both views are worth knowing.

The first reading goes sign by sign. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs this way in his note 80. Taurus commands Pisces there, and Gemini commands Aquarius. By that view, no couple on this page has the tie.

The second reading goes degree by degree. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), works with mirror points across the Aries and Libra line. He calls them contra-antiscia. Venus at 10 degrees of Taurus mirrors 20 degrees of Aquarius, since the two add up to 30. By that view, only couples whose Venuses sit near those mirror points share the tie.

Mirror across the spring point Share of these couples.
Whole signs, any degree None: Robbins’s note 80 pairs Taurus with Pisces.
Exact mirror within 3 degrees 19.0 percent, about one in five.
Exact mirror within 1 degree 6.6 percent, about one in 15.

So the answer to “does our square have the softer tie?” depends on the school. By whole sign, no. By degree, yes for about one couple in five at a 3 degree orb. Your two Venus degrees settle it.

Which Sun signs come with each Venus

Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. The widest gap in eight centuries was 47.3 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus sits in the Sun’s own sign, in one of the two next to it, or at the edge of the sign after those. Each Venus sign allows just five Sun signs.

Venus sign Sun signs it allows, with their share.
Venus in Taurus Gemini 29.9, Aries 28.7, Taurus 24.0, Cancer 8.7 and Pisces 8.7 percent.
Venus in Aquarius Pisces 29.5, Capricorn 28.5, Aquarius 23.1, Sagittarius 9.7 and Aries 9.3 percent.

The two lists overlap in two signs: Aries and Pisces. Those are the two signs that sit between Aquarius and Taurus, inside the square. So the partners can share a Sun sign, as two Aries or as two Pisces. Together that happens in 5.2 percent of these couples, about one in 19.

The likeliest Sun pair lives in the same gap. It is an Aries Sun with a Pisces Sun, at 9.3 percent of these couples. Next come Gemini with Pisces, at 8.8 percent, and Gemini with Capricorn, at 8.5 percent. No single Sun pair reaches one couple in ten, so treat these as a lean, not a rule.

We also sorted every couple by the angle between their two Suns. A square leads at 24.2 percent. Then come the trine at 19.1 and the sextile at 19.0 percent. The quincunx follows at 13.7 and next-door Suns at 13.5 percent. Oppositions come to 5.4 percent, and the same Sun sign to 5.2 percent. So only one couple in four repeats the Venus square in the Suns.

A Taurus and Aquarius by Sun sign is not this couple

Many readers land here because they are a Taurus and an Aquarius by Sun sign. Does that make them this Venus pair? Most of the time, no.

A Taurus Sun has Venus in Taurus 24.4 percent of the time. An Aquarius Sun has Venus in Aquarius 23.2 percent of the time. Both must hold at once, which happens in about 5.7 percent of Taurus and Aquarius Sun couples, or one in 18. The Sun pair is a separate reading, and our page on Taurus and Aquarius by Sun sign covers it.

Seen from the Venus side, 41.6 percent of these couples have at least one partner with Venus in their own Sun sign. In the other 58.4 percent, neither partner does. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If your birth time is unknown and Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the time can decide it.

Venus in Taurus: the planet at home

The old books rank each planet by the sign it stands in. The rank is called dignity. Ptolemy gives Venus two homes: Taurus and Libra. A planet in its home, or domicile, works at full strength. It has its own tools at hand.

Modern writers such as Liz Greene read this Venus as love through the senses. It likes touch, good food, loyalty and time. It builds slowly and keeps what it builds. Our guide to Venus in Taurus covers it in full.

Venus in Aquarius: a guest of Saturn

In the old scheme, Aquarius belongs to Saturn. Venus does not rule it, is not exalted there and does not fall there. So she holds no major rank in this sign. She owns only a small slice, from 7 to 13 degrees, a rank called the terms. Lilly calls a planet with no major rank peregrine, from the Latin for a traveler. It takes the tone of its host.

Modern astrologers give Aquarius a second ruler, Uranus, found in 1781. Our guide to Venus in Aquarius shows how the two rulers lead to two readings. With Saturn as host, this Venus is loyal, cool and careful. With Uranus, it is free, odd and quick to change. Stephen Arroyo and others read it as love that needs friendship first.

So the square joins Venus at full strength with Venus as a guest. By Ptolemy’s rule read by degree, the one at home also commands. That fits the classical picture: Taurus sets the terms, Aquarius adapts them.

Is the square exact in degrees?

Two Venuses three signs apart can be anywhere from 60 to 120 degrees apart. The square is exact at 90 degrees. The allowed gap around it is called the orb. We measured it with the real spread of Venus inside each sign, over eight centuries.

Orb allowed Couples with an exact square.
Within 3 degrees 19.0 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36.0 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46.2 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 55.6 percent of couples.

These values are close to the same for every Venus pair, so they are not special to this one. The twist is at the edges. With an 8 degree orb, 7.1 percent of these couples form a sextile or a trine in degrees instead. Say Venus sits at 1 degree of Taurus and at 29 degrees of Aquarius. The gap is 62 degrees. By sign it is a square. In the sky it is a sextile.

Reading the pair the old way

Nothing below has been tested. It is how the tradition reads this match.

  • Touch and talk. Taurus shows love with the body and with things. Aquarius shows love with ideas and time among friends.
  • Two fixed wills. Neither moves fast. Once each has a view, both hold it.
  • Lead and follow. By Ptolemy’s rule, Taurus leads. In daily life, that can mean Taurus sets the pace at home.
  • Near and far. Taurus wants closeness. Aquarius wants some distance to breathe. Both can say how much.
  • Loyalty. Both are fixed signs, so both value keeping a promise once it is made.

Take this reading as an invitation to talk about closeness and space. It is not a verdict on the couple.

How we measured it

We used two separate methods over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment weighted the same. The first found each moment Venus and the Sun changed sign, to a tenth of a second, with the astronomy-engine library. It then added up the time exactly. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris and placed Venus once an hour on a grid shifted by 30 minutes, for 7,012,656 moments in all. The two methods agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure here.

Mirror shares use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. Pair odds treat two people as born at unrelated moments. Sun pairs and Sun angles combine each partner’s Sun-sign shares from the table above. Ptolemy is cited from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 17.

Other Venus pairs to compare

For the Taurus pair that shares the earth element, see Taurus Venus and Capricorn Venus. For an Aquarius pair with Venus lodged beside Mars, see Aries Venus and Aquarius Venus. The same two signs read through the Moon appear in Taurus Moon and Aquarius Moon. Every pair is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility.

Questions about Taurus and Aquarius Venus

Are Venus in Taurus and Venus in Aquarius compatible?

By sign, they form a square, which Ptolemy calls a clash. Read by degree, his rule softens this one: Taurus commands and Aquarius obeys. Read by whole sign, it does not. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

Does the commanding and obeying tie apply to every couple?

No. By whole sign, it applies to no couple: Robbins’s note 80 pairs Taurus with Pisces. By exact degree, as Lilly reads mirror points, the tie holds within 3 degrees for 19 percent of these couples, and within 1 degree for 6.6 percent.

Can a Venus in Taurus and a Venus in Aquarius share a Sun sign?

Yes, if both are Aries Suns or both are Pisces Suns. That happens in 5.2 percent of these couples, about one in 19.

Is Venus strong in Taurus or in Aquarius?

Venus is at home in Taurus, her strongest seat. In Aquarius she holds no major rank, which Lilly calls peregrine, a guest of Saturn.

How common is a Taurus Venus and Aquarius Venus couple?

Over 1600 to 2400, about 1.40 percent of random couples, or one in 71. It ranks 26th of the 78 Venus pairs.
