Gemini Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility is the story of two air signs four places apart on the zodiac wheel. Astrologers call that a trine, an angle of 120 degrees. It is the link the old books praised most. But the numbers add a surprise: these partners can share a Sun sign in one way only, and it is not Gemini or Aquarius.
We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind each Venus, and what Ptolemy wrote. Read it as a lens for love, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
What a Venus sign adds
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. It is a separate layer from your Sun sign, the one most horoscopes use. Two people with the same Sun sign can have Venus in different signs. So this page asks a second question, on its own terms.
Two guests in a triangle run by their own hosts
The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a seat of honor. The detriment and the fall are its two weak places. Venus holds none of these major ranks in Gemini or in Aquarius. She is a guest in both. She keeps only her terms, a small band of degrees inside each sign.

The hosts matter here. In Book I, chapter 18, Ptolemy sorts the twelve signs into four triangles of one element. The air triangle holds Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. He gives it to Saturn by day and to Mercury by night. Those are the rulers of Aquarius and Gemini. So the triangle that joins these two signs is run by their own two hosts, taking turns. Venus has no share in it.

A trine the old books praised
In chapter 13, Ptolemy calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is that both signs are of the same kind. Gemini and Aquarius are both masculine, the old term for the air and fire signs. So by his rule, this link is easy.
The two signs differ in one way. Gemini is mutable, the last sign of spring. Aquarius is fixed, the middle sign of winter. Mutable signs adjust. Fixed signs hold on. Among all 78 Venus pairs, this is the only trine that joins a mutable air sign and a fixed one.
Does Gemini command Aquarius? Two readings
Ptolemy lists other ties besides the aspects. In chapter 14, some signs “command” and others “obey.” They sit at equal distance from an equinox sign and rise in equal times. The sign in the summer half commands. The trouble is that his text can be read in two ways.
The first reading uses whole signs. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, lists the pairs in his note 80. Gemini and Aquarius are on the list, with Gemini first. Both sit two signs from Aries, one after it and one before it. On that reading, the pair forms a trine and Gemini commands too.
The second reading uses exact degrees. Each degree has a mirror point across the line from 0 degrees Aries to 0 degrees Libra. The mirror of a Gemini degree falls in Capricorn, not Aquarius. We counted the couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points. Within 1 degree, it is 0.05 percent. Within 3 degrees, it is 0.49 percent. So by degree, almost never.
Chapter 15 adds signs that “behold” each other, with days of equal length. In Robbins’s note 83, Gemini pairs with Leo and Aquarius with Sagittarius. So this couple does not behold, on either reading.
How common the pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for about six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. It repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can tilt the count. We used eight full centuries.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Gemini and the other Venus in Aquarius? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.38 percent, or about one couple in 72. That ranks 38th of the 78 Venus pairs. There are twelve Venus trines, and this one ranks eighth.
Which Sun signs sit behind each Venus
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs.

In calendar terms, Aquarius Venus people are born from about November 22 to April 19. Gemini Venus people are born from about March 20 to August 22. The two windows overlap for a single month, the month of Aries.
One shared Sun sign, and it is Aries
Look at the two lists. Only one Sun sign appears in both: Aries. An Aries Sun can hold Venus in Gemini, two signs ahead, at the far edge of its range. It can hold Venus in Aquarius, two signs behind, at the other edge. So these partners share a Sun sign only if both are Aries.
How rare is that? Multiply the two Aries shares, 8.31 percent and 9.31 percent. The result is 0.77 percent, about one couple in 129. In the other 128, the two Suns differ.
What does the typical couple look like? The most likely mix is a Cancer Sun with the Gemini Venus and a Pisces Sun with the Aquarius Venus. That covers 8.82 percent of these couples. Next come Taurus with Pisces, at 8.56 percent, and Cancer with Capricorn, at 8.53 percent. No single mix reaches one couple in eleven. So read the typical couple as a lean, not a rule.

Only one couple in four has its Suns in a trine as well. For the rest, the easy Venus link sits on top of a different Sun story. Read both.
Gemini and Aquarius by Sun sign: not the same couple
Many readers land here as a Gemini Sun and an Aquarius Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Only in part. Among Gemini Venus people, 24.02 percent have a Gemini Sun. Turn it around. In 41.56 percent of Gemini Venus and Aquarius Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. In 5.55 percent, both do. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
The trine in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses four signs apart can be anywhere from 90 to 150 degrees apart. The true trine is 120. The margin allowed around it is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign.

These values are almost the same for every Venus pair, so they are not a trait of this couple. The edges tell more. At an 8 degree orb, 3.63 percent of these couples form a square by degree instead. Picture Venus at 0 degrees Gemini and at 29 degrees Aquarius. The gap is 91 degrees. By sign it is a trine. In the sky it is a square.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Shared ground. Both love through the mind. A long talk, a strange film and a new idea all count as a date.
- Range and focus. The Gemini Venus wants many topics. The Aquarius Venus wants one cause that matters.
- Pace. Gemini is mutable and changes plans fast. Aquarius is fixed and keeps its views for years.
- The sore spot. Both explain feelings more than they show them. Warmth can go unsaid for too long.
The whole-sign reading adds a small detail. If Gemini commands, the Gemini Venus sets the topic and the Aquarius Venus sets the terms. Saturn, the host of Aquarius, keeps promises. Mercury, the host of Gemini, keeps the talk going. The tradition reads that as a fair trade.
A simple habit helps. Once a week, let each partner name one feeling with no theory attached. Air signs think out loud. They can learn to feel out loud too.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a trine is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
