Cancer Venus and Leo Venus Compatibility: The Houses of the Moon and Sun, Next Door but Unseen

Cancer Venus and Leo Venus compatibility starts with a map of two homes. Ptolemy gave Cancer to the Moon and Leo to the Sun. So one partner’s Venus sits in the Moon’s house, and the other’s sits in the Sun’s. The two signs are next-door neighbors on the wheel. Yet the old books say they cannot see each other.

We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to see what else comes with this pair. It is the third most common of the 78 Venus pairs. No pair of two different Venus signs is more likely to share a Sun sign. And the likeliest Suns are Cancer and Leo again. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

Why the Moon got Cancer and the Sun got Leo

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Each planet also has a home sign, called its domicile, where it rules.

Ptolemy explains the homes in Book I, chapter 17, of the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. Cancer and Leo are the most northern signs. When the Sun passes through them, it climbs closest to the top of the sky. That makes them the signs of the most heat. So he gave them to the two brightest bodies, the lights. Leo is a masculine sign, and it went to the Sun. Cancer is a feminine sign, and it went to the Moon.

From there he split the wheel in two. The half from Leo to Capricorn belongs to the Sun. The half from Aquarius to Cancer belongs to the Moon. Each of the five planets then got one house in each half. Venus got Libra on the solar side and Taurus on the lunar side.

The seam between the two halves runs right between Cancer and Leo. So this couple sits on the line where the Moon’s half of the sky meets the Sun’s. One Venus stands in the last lunar sign, the other in the first solar one.

Partner Ruler of the sign Rank of Venus there.
Cancer Venus The Moon No major rank.
Leo Venus The Sun No major rank.

Neither sign is a home of Venus. Neither is her exaltation, her place of honor, which is Pisces. Neither is her exile or her fall. Modern books call a planet with none of these marks peregrine, a word for a traveler with no estate. She keeps small shares. In Cancer, Ptolemy makes her a co-ruler of the water signs by day. In Leo she gets no such share, since the fire signs go to the Sun by day and Jupiter by night.

A Cancer Venus loves through care, memory and home. It wants to feel safe before it opens up. Our page on Venus in Cancer covers the placement in full. A Leo Venus loves through warmth and open pride. It wants to be seen and chosen out loud. Our page on Venus in Leo explains how it leans on the Sun.

Neighbors that are turned away

Cancer and Leo sit one sign apart. That gap is called a semi-sextile, an angle of 30 degrees. Ptolemy’s list of aspects in chapter 13 has only four: the sextile, the square, the trine and the opposition. The semi-sextile is not one of them.

Ptolemy goes further in chapter 16. He calls signs one or five apart “disjunct,” or alien. In the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, the standard English text, signs one apart are “averted” from each other. They form no aspect, and they share no other tie.

What other ties does he mean? In chapter 14, some signs “command” and others “obey.” In chapter 15, some signs “behold” each other, because the Sun gives them days of equal length. Robbins shows in his notes 80 and 83 that the pairs can be read two ways. Read by exact points, Cancer beholds Gemini and Leo beholds Taurus. Read by whole signs, Leo beholds Gemini, and Cancer, the solstice sign, has no partner. Either way, Cancer and Leo share no tie. They have no link at all on either reading.

Some scholars read these ties by exact degree instead, as William Lilly did in 1647 with his mirror points, called antiscia. We counted the couples whose two Venuses sit on mirror points. For this pair, the count is zero. Both readings agree.

The same two signs get the same verdict when the Moon sits in them. Our page on Cancer Moon and Leo Moon compatibility reads this pair through the Moon.

How common this pair is

Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short run of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of time, 1600 to 2400 Rank among twelve.
Venus in Cancer 8.62 percent First of twelve.
Venus in Leo 8.46 percent Fourth of twelve.
Even split 8.33 percent One sign in twelve.

Pick two people at random. The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.46 percent, or about one couple in 69. That ranks third of the 78 Venus pairs. Only Taurus with Cancer and Gemini with Cancer come up more.

Four Sun signs in common

Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.

Sun sign Share of Cancer Venus people Note.
Taurus 8.27 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Gemini 29.33 percent Venus one sign ahead.
Cancer 24.07 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Leo 29.67 percent The largest group.
Virgo 8.66 percent Venus two signs behind.
Sun sign Share of Leo Venus people Note.
Gemini 8.37 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Cancer 29.84 percent The largest group.
Leo 23.88 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Virgo 29.16 percent Venus one sign behind.
Libra 8.76 percent Venus two signs behind.

The two lists overlap on four signs: Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo. So these partners share a Sun sign in 19.25 percent of couples, about one in five. No pair of two different Venus signs does better, though Gemini with Cancer trails by only 0.03 points.

In dates, Cancer Venus people are born between about April 20 and September 22. Leo Venus people are born between about May 21 and October 22. The two windows overlap for four months, from late May to late September.

The Suns echo the Venuses

Which Sun pair turns up most here? A Cancer Sun for one partner and a Leo Sun for the other. That covers 14.60 percent of these couples, about one in seven. Among the 66 pairs of two different Venus signs, no top Sun pair has a larger share. Gemini with Cancer comes close, at 14.57 percent.

Here is the twist. The most common way to get there is crossed. The partner with the Cancer Sun has the Leo Venus, and the partner with the Leo Sun has the Cancer Venus. That crossed form covers 8.85 percent of couples. The straight form, with each Venus in its own Sun sign, covers 5.75 percent.

Angle between the two Suns Share of couples What it means.
Semi-sextile 37.5 percent Next-door Suns, like the Venuses.
Sextile 24.2 percent A friendly link, two signs apart.
Same sign 19.3 percent Both partners share a Sun sign.
Square 13.4 percent A tense right angle.
Trine 5.0 percent An easy link, four signs apart.
Quincunx 0.7 percent Five signs apart, a rare case here.

In more than a third of these couples, the Suns are next door too. None has opposite Suns.

Cancer and Leo by Sun sign: the odds of this Venus pair

Many readers land here because they are a Cancer Sun and a Leo Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? We turned the counts around. For a Cancer Sun, Venus is in Gemini 29.44 percent of the time, in Leo 29.31 percent and in Cancer 24.10 percent. For a Leo Sun, Venus is in Cancer 29.86 percent of the time, in Virgo 29.30 percent and in Leo 23.57 percent.

Put the two together. A couple with a Cancer Sun and a Leo Sun has this Venus pair in 14.43 percent of cases, about one in seven. The crossed form wins again: 8.75 percent, against 5.68 percent for the straight one. So if you are a Cancer Sun with a Leo Sun partner, the swap is more likely than the straight match: your Venus in Leo, theirs in Cancer. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.

The semi-sextile in real degrees

A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses one sign apart can be anywhere from 0 to 60 degrees apart. The exact semi-sextile is 30. The margin allowed around an exact angle is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to count how many couples come close.

Orb Couples with an exact semi-sextile Couples with a hidden aspect across the sign line.
3 degrees 19.00 percent 1.00 percent.
6 degrees 35.99 percent 4.01 percent.
8 degrees 46.21 percent 7.12 percent.
10 degrees 55.54 percent 11.12 percent.

The first column is about the same for every Venus pair. The second is the telling one. Near the edges, two Venuses can form a true aspect that the signs hide. If the Cancer Venus sits late in its sign and the Leo Venus early in its own, they can be conjunct. If the Cancer Venus is early and the Leo Venus late, they can form a sextile. At an 8 degree orb, 7.12 percent of couples have one of these hidden aspects. For them, the “averted” label by sign meets a real link by degree.

How the tradition reads this couple

None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.

  • Moon and Sun. The Cancer Venus takes its cues from the Moon: moods, memory and a safe base. The Leo Venus takes its cues from the Sun: warmth, pride and the need to shine.
  • Water and fire. Fire is hot and dry, and water is cold and moist. The old books see them as opposites in both qualities.
  • Start and hold. Cancer is cardinal, a sign that opens a season. Leo is fixed, a sign that holds one. One starts the warmth, and the other keeps it going.
  • The sore spot. Cancer goes quiet when hurt. Leo can read that silence as a snub. Each misses the other’s cue, much like signs that are averted.

A practical habit helps. Let the Leo partner say out loud what they admire. Let the Cancer partner say out loud what they need. The Moon and the Sun do not have to face each other to light the same room.

The same signs through other pairs

A Cancer Venus meets its sextile in Cancer Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility and a water trine in Cancer Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility. With a Libra Venus, it squares Venus at home, in Venus in Cancer and Venus in Libra compatibility.

A Leo Venus faces a Taurus Venus across a fixed square in Taurus Venus and Leo Venus compatibility. The Sun signs get their own page, Cancer and Leo compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility.

What the evidence says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.

So “averted” is not a warning, and a high rank is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.

How we measured

We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.

Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The reverse figures, from Sun sign to Venus sign, divide the same joint counts by the time the Sun spends in each sign. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 18.

Frequently asked questions

Are Venus in Cancer and Venus in Leo compatible?

By sign they form a semi-sextile, which is not one of Ptolemy’s aspects, and he calls signs one apart averted. By degree, 7.12 percent of couples still have a hidden conjunction or sextile at an 8 degree orb. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

How common is a Cancer Venus and Leo Venus couple?

About one couple in 69, or 1.46 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks third of the 78 Venus pairs.

Can a Cancer Venus and a Leo Venus share a Sun sign?

Yes, in 19.25 percent of couples, about one in five. The shared Sun can be Gemini, Cancer, Leo or Virgo.

Which Sun signs are most likely in this couple?

A Cancer Sun and a Leo Sun, in 14.60 percent of couples. Most of those are crossed, with the Leo Venus in the Cancer Sun partner and the Cancer Venus in the Leo Sun partner.

Why did Ptolemy give Cancer to the Moon and Leo to the Sun?

He wrote that they are the most northern signs and the ones that bring the most heat, so they went to the two lights. Leo is masculine and went to the Sun, while Cancer is feminine and went to the Moon.
