Cancer Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility joins a water sign and an earth sign two steps apart. That gap is a sextile, one of the easy angles in the old books. The two Venuses stand on very different ground. In Cancer, Venus holds no major rank. In Virgo, she is in her fall, the lowest seat the tradition gives her.
Yet Ptolemy tied these two signs to the same pair of rulers. In his scheme, Venus rules both of their elements by day, and the Moon helps rule both by night. We also tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400. The result is a twist: about half of these couples include a Leo Sun, though neither Venus is in Leo. Read this page as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.
A low seat and a plain one
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The tradition also ranks each planet by the sign it sits in.
| Partner | Ruler of the sign | Rank of Venus there. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer Venus | The Moon | No major rank. |
| Virgo Venus | Mercury | Fall. |
Ptolemy sets out the exaltations in Book I, chapter 19, of the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. An exaltation is a place of honor. Venus is exalted in Pisces. The sign across from it, Virgo, is her fall, which Ptolemy calls her depression. So a Virgo Venus sits in the low place, while a Cancer Venus sits in a plain one: no home, no honor, no exile, no fall.
William Lilly, whose Christian Astrology came out in 1647, scored these ranks with points. A planet in fall loses four. A planet in exile, across from its home, loses five. So even in his table, fall is the softer blow. It marks a guest whose gifts the house does not prize, not a flaw in a person.
A Cancer Venus loves through care, memory and home. It wants to feel safe before it opens up. Our page on Venus in Cancer covers the placement in full. A Virgo Venus loves through useful acts and close attention. It shows love by fixing, tending and noticing. Our page on Venus in Virgo explains why the books call it fall.
Same rulers by day and by night
Ptolemy adds a second kind of rank in chapter 18. He sorts the twelve signs into four triangles of three, one for each element. Each triangle gets a ruler by day and one by night. A day chart means a birth with the Sun above the horizon.
| Triangle | Ruler by day | Ruler by night. |
|---|---|---|
| Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Mars, with Venus | Mars, with the Moon. |
| Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Venus | The Moon. |
For the water triangle, Ptolemy names Mars first, because Scorpio is his house. Since the water signs are feminine, he adds Venus by day and the Moon by night. For the earth triangle, he names Venus by day and the Moon by night outright. So the same two bodies share rule of both signs in this couple. Venus holds the day, and the Moon holds the night.
That puts the Virgo Venus in an odd spot. She is in her fall, yet in a day chart she rules the element she stands in. In Lilly’s points, a triangle rank adds three. So a day-born Virgo Venus claws back most of what the fall takes away. A night-born one does not.
The Moon links the pair too. She rules Cancer outright, and she shares the night in both triangles. Our page on Cancer Moon and Virgo Moon compatibility reads the same two signs through the Moon.
What Ptolemy says about the sextile
Cancer and Virgo sit two signs apart. That makes a sextile, an angle of 60 degrees. In chapter 13, Ptolemy lists four aspects. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious, because they join signs of the same kind. Cancer and Virgo are both feminine signs. By the book, this is a friendly angle.
He names two more ties in chapters 14 and 15. Some signs “command” and “obey.” Some “behold” each other, because the Sun gives them days of equal length. Frank Robbins, whose Loeb edition is the standard English text, shows in his notes 80 and 83 that these pairs can be read two ways. Read by exact points, Virgo beholds Aries and Cancer beholds Gemini. Read by whole signs, Virgo beholds Taurus, and Cancer, the solstice sign, has no partner. Either way, no such tie joins Cancer and Virgo. The sextile is the only link.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. It speeds up and slows down. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short run of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Cancer | 8.62 percent | First of twelve. |
| Venus in Virgo | 8.41 percent | Fifth of twelve. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Venus in her fall is more common than Venus in her exaltation, at 8.32 percent in Pisces. Rank in the books and time in the sky are not linked.
Pick two people at random. What is the chance that one has Venus in Cancer and the other Venus in Virgo? The pair can form two ways, so we double the product of the two shares. The answer is 1.45 percent, or about one couple in 69. That ranks sixth of the 78 Venus pairs.
Half the couples include a Leo Sun
Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees, less than two signs. So each Venus sign can only go with five Sun signs. The tables show the split, as a share of all people with that Venus.
| Sun sign | Share of Cancer Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus | 8.27 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Gemini | 29.33 percent | Venus one sign ahead. |
| Cancer | 24.07 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Leo | 29.67 percent | The largest group. |
| Virgo | 8.66 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
| Sun sign | Share of Virgo Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer | 8.65 percent | Venus two signs ahead of the Sun. |
| Leo | 29.85 percent | The largest group. |
| Virgo | 23.66 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Libra | 28.93 percent | Venus one sign behind. |
| Scorpio | 8.91 percent | Venus two signs behind. |
Look at the top rows. For both Venuses, the largest Sun group is Leo. A Cancer Venus runs one sign behind a Leo Sun. A Virgo Venus runs one sign ahead of it. So the two partners lean toward the same Sun from opposite sides. Only one other Venus pair, Gemini with Leo, shares its top Sun sign like this.
Put it in numbers. In 50.7 percent of these couples, at least one partner has a Leo Sun. In 8.86 percent, both do. The single likeliest Sun pair, though, is a Cancer Sun with a Leo Sun, at 9.75 percent. That is because it can form two ways: the Cancer Venus with a Cancer Sun and the Virgo Venus with a Leo Sun, or the Cancer Venus with a Leo Sun and the Virgo Venus with a Cancer Sun.
The two Sun lists overlap on Cancer, Leo and Virgo. So these partners share a Sun sign in 12.99 percent of couples, about one in eight. In dates, Cancer Venus people are born between about April 20 and September 22. Virgo Venus people are born between about June 21 and November 21. The windows overlap for three months, the months of Cancer, Leo and Virgo.
| Angle between the two Suns | Share of couples | What it means. |
|---|---|---|
| Sextile | 25.3 percent | Two signs apart, like the Venuses. |
| Semi-sextile | 24.4 percent | Next-door Suns. |
| Square | 19.0 percent | A tense right angle. |
| Same sign | 13.0 percent | Both partners share a Sun sign. |
| Trine | 12.6 percent | An easy link, four signs apart. |
| Quincunx | 5.0 percent | Five signs apart, with no classic aspect. |
| Opposition | 0.7 percent | The Suns face each other. |
Only one couple in four has a sextile between the Suns as well. For the other three, the Sun story differs from the Venus story.
Cancer and Virgo by Sun sign: not the same couple
Many readers land here because they are a Cancer Sun and a Virgo Sun. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. We turned the counts around. For a Cancer Sun, Venus is in Cancer 24.10 percent of the time. For a Virgo Sun, Venus is in Virgo 23.52 percent of the time. The crossed form, with Venus in the partner’s Sun sign, is rare: about 8 percent on each side.
Put together, a couple with a Cancer Sun and a Virgo Sun has this Venus pair in 6.41 percent of cases, about one in 16. Almost all of that is the straight form, at 5.67 percent. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.
The sextile in real degrees
A sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses two signs apart can be anywhere from 30 to 90 degrees apart. The exact sextile is 60. The margin allowed around an exact angle is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to count how many couples come close.
| Orb | Couples with an exact sextile | Couples with a hidden square. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 18.99 percent | 0.50 percent. |
| 6 degrees | 35.98 percent | 2.01 percent. |
| 8 degrees | 46.19 percent | 3.56 percent. |
| 10 degrees | 55.52 percent | 5.55 percent. |
The first column is about the same for every Venus pair, so it is not a trait of this couple. The second is. If the Cancer Venus sits early in its sign and the Virgo Venus late in its own, the gap can reach close to 90 degrees. That is a square, a tense angle, hidden under a friendly sign pair. At an 8 degree orb, 3.56 percent of couples have one.
How the tradition reads this couple
None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.
- Water and earth. Water is cold and moist, and earth is cold and dry. The old books see two elements that share one quality, cold, as able to mix.
- Start and adjust. Cancer is cardinal, a sign that opens a season. Virgo is mutable, a sign that closes one and adapts. One starts the care, and the other tunes it.
- Feeling and detail. The Cancer Venus shows love through comfort. The Virgo Venus shows love through help and small repairs.
- The sore spot. A Virgo Venus fixes what it loves. A Cancer Venus can hear that as a verdict on how it feels.
A practical habit helps. Let the Virgo partner ask before fixing. Let the Cancer partner say when comfort is what they want, not a plan. Day or night, the same two rulers are on duty.
The same signs through other pairs
A Cancer Venus sits next to a Leo Venus in Cancer Venus and Leo Venus compatibility and trines a Scorpio Venus in Cancer Venus and Scorpio Venus compatibility.
A Virgo Venus meets Venus at home in Taurus Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility, and Venus in her place of honor in Virgo Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility. The Sun signs get their own page, Cancer and Virgo compatibility. Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a fall is not a warning, and a sextile is not a promise. This page shows the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.
Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The reverse figures, from Sun sign to Venus sign, divide the same joint counts by the time the Sun spends in each sign. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.
Frequently asked questions
Are Venus in Cancer and Venus in Virgo compatible?
They form a sextile, which Ptolemy called harmonious, between two feminine signs. At an 8 degree orb, 46.19 percent of these couples have a true sextile. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Cancer Venus and Virgo Venus couple?
About one couple in 69, or 1.45 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks sixth of the 78 Venus pairs.
Is Venus weak in Virgo?
The tradition calls Virgo her fall, since it faces Pisces, where she is exalted. Yet Ptolemy makes Venus the day ruler of the earth signs, so a day-born Virgo Venus keeps a real share of rule.
Which Sun signs are most likely in this couple?
Leo is the top Sun sign for both Venuses, and 50.7 percent of couples include at least one Leo Sun. The single likeliest Sun pair is Cancer with Leo, at 9.75 percent.
Can a Cancer Venus and a Virgo Venus share a Sun sign?
Yes, in 12.99 percent of couples, about one in eight. The shared Sun can be Cancer, Leo or Virgo.
