Leo Venus and Leo Venus Compatibility: Both Venuses in Leo, Yet Most Couples Have No Leo Sun

Leo Venus and Leo Venus compatibility joins two people with Venus in the same sign, the one the Sun rules. You might expect such a couple to be two Leo Suns. Most of the time, it is not. In 58 percent of these couples, neither partner has the Sun in Leo.

We tracked Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400 to put numbers on this pair. This page gives the counts, the Sun signs behind a Leo Venus, and what the old authors wrote. Read it as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do.

Venus as a guest in the Sun’s house

Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The old authors gave each planet a rank in each sign. A home, or domicile, is a sign the planet rules. An exaltation is a sign where it is honored. The exile and the fall are its weak places.

Ptolemy sets out the homes in chapter 17 of Book I of the Tetrabiblos. He gave the two warmest signs to the two lights: “Leo, which is masculine, to the sun and Cancer, feminine, to the moon.” Leo is the only sign the Sun rules. Venus has no major rank there. She is neither at home, nor honored, nor weak. The old word for this is peregrine, which means a stranger or a guest.

She does own a small band of degrees in Leo, five or six wide, called her terms. It is a minor rank. Ptolemy’s chapter 18 adds a larger one, the rulers of each triangle of signs. Leo belongs to the fire triangle, with Aries and Sagittarius. He gave it to the Sun by day and Jupiter by night. Venus has no share.

Partner Rank of Venus Who runs the sign.
First Leo Venus No major rank, a guest. The Sun, its only ruler.
Second Leo Venus No major rank, a guest. The Sun, its only ruler.

A guest rank is not a flaw. It says Venus takes her cue from her host. In Leo, the host is the Sun, and the Sun is never far from Venus. Our page on Venus in Leo explains why this Venus is never alone.

How common this pair is

Venus does not spend equal time in each sign. About every 19 months, it seems to move backward for six weeks, which astrologers call retrograde. Venus repeats its path on an eight-year cycle, so a short span of years can skew the count. We used eight full centuries.

Venus sign Share of time, 1600 to 2400 Rank among twelve.
Venus in Leo 8.46 percent Fourth of twelve.
Even split 8.33 percent One sign in twelve.

Now pick two people at random. What is the chance that both have Venus in Leo? A same-sign pair can form only one way, so we square the share. The answer is 0.72 percent, or about one couple in 140. That ranks 70th of the 78 Venus pairs. All twelve same-sign pairs sit at the bottom of that list, since each can form only one way.

Same-sign Venus pair One couple in Rank among twelve.
Cancer and Cancer About 134 couples. Most common.
Taurus and Taurus About 136 couples. Second.
Gemini and Gemini About 140 couples. Third, by a hair.
Leo and Leo About 140 couples. Fourth.
Capricorn and Capricorn About 155 couples. Rarest.

One sign, and how close the two Venuses sit

Two Venuses in one sign form a conjunction by sign. Ptolemy’s chapter 13 lists four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. The conjunction is not among them. Later authors, such as William Lilly, counted it as the closest bond of all.

But one sign spans 30 degrees. Two Venuses in Leo can sit anywhere from 0 to 30 degrees apart. The margin allowed around an exact aspect is called the orb. We used the real spread of Venus inside Leo to see how many couples come close.

Orb Couples with a true conjunction Reading.
3 degrees 18.99 percent About one in five.
6 degrees 35.96 percent About one in three.
8 degrees 46.16 percent Just under half.
10 degrees 55.47 percent Just over half.

These values are nearly the same for every Venus pair, so they do not set this one apart. The point is plain, though. More than half of these couples share a sign without a close conjunction.

Leo’s partners in Ptolemy, read two ways

Ptolemy names two more ties between signs. Both join two different signs, so neither applies to a same-sign pair. They still show which signs the tradition set beside Leo. Each tie can be read by exact degree or by whole sign, as the translator Frank Robbins lays out in his notes.

  • “Commanding” and “obeying,” in chapter 14, join signs at equal distance from an equinox. By degree, Leo mirrors Scorpio across 0 degrees of Libra. By whole sign, Robbins’s note 80 pairs Leo with Sagittarius. On both readings Leo lies in the summer half, so Leo commands.
  • “Beholding,” in chapter 15, joins signs where the days have equal length. By degree, Leo mirrors Taurus across 0 degrees of Cancer. By whole sign, Robbins’s note 83 pairs Leo with Gemini.

So two Leo Venuses share one sign, one element and one ruler. The finer ties of Ptolemy point outward, toward other signs.

Which Sun signs sit behind a Leo Venus

Venus never strays far from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees. Ptolemy knew the rule: Venus “is never more than two signs removed from the sun.” So a Leo Venus can only go with five Sun signs.

Sun sign Share of Leo Venus people Note.
Gemini 8.37 percent Venus two signs ahead of the Sun.
Cancer 29.84 percent The largest group.
Leo 23.88 percent Sun and Venus in one sign.
Virgo 29.16 percent Venus one sign behind.
Libra 8.76 percent Venus two signs behind.

In calendar terms, Leo Venus people are born between about May 21 and October 23. Fewer than one in four has a Leo Sun. Cancer Suns and Virgo Suns each outnumber them.

Most of these couples have no Leo Sun

Now combine two partners. A Leo Sun sits behind 23.88 percent of Leo Venuses. So we can count how many couples hold two, one or no Leo Suns.

Leo Suns in the couple Share of these couples Reading.
Neither partner 57.9 percent Close to three couples in five.
One partner 36.4 percent About one couple in three.
Both partners 5.7 percent About one couple in 18.

Next, we multiplied the Sun sign shares for each partner and grouped the results. Order does not matter: a Cancer with a Virgo counts once.

Sun pair Share of these couples Rank.
Cancer and Virgo 17.40 percent First, about one couple in six.
Cancer and Leo 14.3 percent Second.
Leo and Virgo 13.9 percent Third.
Cancer and Cancer 8.9 percent Fourth.
Virgo and Virgo 8.5 percent Fifth.
Leo and Leo 5.7 percent Sixth.

So the most likely face of this pair is a Cancer and a Virgo. They sit on either side of Leo, and both carry Venus in the sign between their Suns. Two Leo Suns come only sixth.

The two Suns sit in next-door signs in 38.3 percent of couples. They sit two signs apart, a sextile, in 25.6 percent. They share one sign in 24.6 percent, about one in four. That share splits into Cancer pairs, Virgo pairs, Leo pairs and a sliver of Gemini and Libra pairs. A trine between the Suns is rare, at 1.5 percent, and only as a Gemini Sun with a Libra Sun.

Two Leo Suns are a different couple

Many readers land here because both partners are Leo Suns. Does that make them this Venus pair? Not in most cases. Venus shares the Sun’s sign in 23.62 percent of birth moments. So two Leo Suns hold a double Leo Venus in roughly one couple in 18.

That Sun pair has its own page, Leo and Leo compatibility by Sun sign. It counts how common two Leo Suns are among US births.

Turn it around. In 42.05 percent of Leo Venus couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That ranks 10th of the 78 pairs. Yet across all pairs this share only moves between about 41 and 42 percent, so it sets no pair apart. A free birth chart shows your Venus sign. If Venus sits near the edge of a sign, the birth time can decide it.

How the tradition reads this couple

None of what follows has been tested. It is how the tradition reads the pair.

  • Shared ground. Both love out loud. Gifts, praise and a sense of occasion all count.
  • One host. Both Venuses answer to the Sun. Warmth, pride and loyalty set the tone.
  • The mirror. Each sees their own need for attention in the other.
  • The sore spot. Two people who like the spotlight can both wait to be seen first.

A simple habit helps. Let each partner give one plain compliment a day, with no request attached. Then take turns choosing the plan for the week. In the old logic, the Sun gives light without asking for it back. Read that way, this couple does best when each one plays host.

Neighbors on the wheel

The Moon shows emotional needs, a layer apart from Venus. Our page on Leo Moon and Leo Moon compatibility reads the sign through that layer. One sign on, Leo Venus and Virgo Venus compatibility sets a guest Venus beside Venus in her fall. Across a gap of five signs, Venus in Leo and Venus in Capricorn joins two lists of Sun signs that never meet.

Every pair of Venus signs is listed in our guide to Venus sign compatibility, sign by sign.

What the evidence says

The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs only. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.

So a shared sign is not a promise, and a guest rank is not a warning. This page shows the sky behind the label.

How we measured

We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points.

Pair odds assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Sun pair figures multiply each partner’s Sun sign shares. The degree figures use the real spread of Venus inside Leo, in steps of a tenth of a degree. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. Ptolemy is quoted from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19, with his notes 80 and 83.

Frequently asked questions

Are two Venus in Leo partners compatible?

They share one sign, one element and one ruler, the Sun. Both Venuses are guests there, with no major rank. At an 8-degree orb, 46.16 percent of these couples have a true conjunction. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.

How common is a Leo Venus and Leo Venus couple?

About one couple in 140, or 0.72 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 70th of the 78 Venus pairs and fourth of the 12 same-sign pairs.

What Sun signs do two Leo Venus partners have?

The likeliest mix is a Cancer Sun with a Virgo Sun, in 17.40 percent of these couples. In 57.9 percent, neither partner has a Leo Sun. Two Leo Suns come sixth, at 5.7 percent.

Is Venus strong or weak in Leo?

Neither. Leo is the Sun’s only house, and Venus holds no major rank there. The old word is peregrine. She owns only a small band of degrees, her terms.

Does a double Leo Venus mean two Leo Suns?

Rarely. Only about one Leo Venus person in four has a Leo Sun. Two Leo Suns share a Leo Venus in roughly one couple in 18.
